it was easier on text programs due to usernames, text colors, etc.
use of emoticons is a big one, women generally use more, other than that there's a lot of small personality aspects. often you can classify people into stereotypes, ie independant guy who doesn't get into chit-chat much and is hard to approach, flirty overenthusiastic fangirl, etc
