What do you think of this video? It's a video essay in which the creator essentially explains how otakus and the anime industry failed to understand the message that Anno meant to convey with the Eva series, which is that you should never succumb to escapism. And how Anno created the remake films as a reaction to people using this very series as a form of escapism.
The guy made another interesting video titled Let's All (not) Love Lain in which he talks about how people failed to understand Lain's similar message and how its fandom is engaging in exactly the type of behaviour that the show tried to warn its audience about.

Considering all Rebuild managed to do is solidify that is that running away was really the better choice all along, and that pretty much nobody in that world is worth saving, Anno really dropped the ball there.
Of course we all know the real reason the Rebuild exists because Gaynax effectively died as an animu studio, and Anno needed a new avenue to collect the eternal evabucks.

At this point I have an intrinsic distrust for anything alone the lines of "this niche media is actually against niche media", especially Evangelion. It's a series that I've seen used like a cudgel against anything some people might be motivated to use it for, and all of them think it's both an obvious and infallible take. And then you read any of the actual interviews with Anno, who seems comfortably being an occasionally depressed weirdo who still adores all his old nerd media and habits and that makes it seem like the most spiteful and twisted take you could possibly drag out from it. The other thing that bothers me a lot is how every author nowadays wants to be "like, deep and shit" and so they coat their work with layer upon layer of bullshit so you can't discern anything meaningful because there is nothing, but everyone who sees it will pretend there is thanks to their training (see: dirty jeans are art experiment).
Both the author and the audience happily flap their wings around and pretend to be big brained thinkers, never mind the fact that the truly deep works are usually very simple in both structure and content because the intention is to deliver the most profound text to as many people as possible and not dilute the meaning in the process.
Fucking Madoka has a deep (if you want to call it such) story and it delivers it with minimal crap and almost no pretentiousness.

Understanding Author intent is part of the whole experience of getting the full picture of the artwork. Art is a product of it's time, with artist's intent, audience reaction, audience reception, etc.. Just completely discarding one aspect to it is intellectually dishonest when trying to dissect an art piece fully.
