As the title says. I'll start: Seikai no Monshou. A 'Space Opera' with qt blue haired space elves set during a war and follows a normal human MC who has been elevated to the nobility in the blue space elf empire. Lots of spaceship battle scenes, drama and romance. All around decent anime.

My fucking nigger you have some taste! I'll add The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, is a anime about a fool who some how becomes a captain and a good one at that despite being a fool. It's heavily implied that Tylor is one of the smartest people in the show but just enjoys acting the fool

It's suprising how litle known it is, the first half of the film which is set in the castle town looks amazing. It feels a lot like a Ghibli film but with a different artstyle.

Another one that I already mentioned in another thread: Hyouge Mono. It's more well-known than Arete but at the time of airing, it was so unpopular that the fansubbing group who originally did subs for it dropped it halfway through.

It's set in the Sengoku period but rather than focusing on action, it focuses on the tea ceremonies Japanese rulers held. That may sound boring but it's a very amusing ride, especially thanks to the main character who is what I could only describe as a teaware otaku. The show certainly gives you the feeling that Japs have always been the same when it comes to obsessing over seemingly useless crap, the items they obsessed over just changed over time.

It's very loosely based off some American feminist fairy tale Studio 4°C acquired the rights for, but the director didn't feel comfortable with the feminist shit so he rewrote most of it. There's still some feminist horseshit floating around, but it's so heavily diluted and deemphasized to focus on other themes that I'm not surprised other anons miss it entirely.

I'm not familiar with the story it was adapted from but there were still a lot of obvious feminist themes in them as you said; the MC being deemed possesed because she does not behave like a woman and goes against her father's wishes, the wizard who promises to fix her by marrying her after which she turns into a beautiful woman and is locked up etc. Anyway, it wasn't too bad and is only present in the middle section of the film, the first and latter section mainly revolves around just showing off the world it takes place in.

I thought it was funny that the villain kind of looked like a kike by the way.

The book sounds like hamfisted propaganda to me (could be wrong since I've never read it). The anime does a lot to flesh out characters and sections intended as feminist strawmen into something much more interesting, so despite its source material I'd say it's still worth seeing.

I'm currently watching Brigadoon: Marin to Melan, not sure how underrated it is but I've never really seen anyone talk about it online before I started watching. It's like no other show I have seen, there's a lot of heavy moodswings, one moment it feels like a comedy show for children, the other moment the MC is bullied for an entire episode or people are killed or injured by aliens. It kind of feels like Samurai Flamenco's older mecha sister if I have to compare it to something.

Correction: it's more like Samurai Flamenco mixed with Evangelion and maybe a little drop of monster-catching anime like Pokemon and Digimon. I watched the Spirit of Wonder OVA yesterday. I enjoyed it a lot. It centers around an absurd invention and the inventor's landlord. The name is perfectly suited for it, since that's the kind of feeling it gives off with the ridiculous invention and light mood. It kind of reminds me of Verne-era science fiction.

File: 3cd7b766a094a60⋯.webm (2.07 MB,426x240,71:40,Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Mus….webm)

I've never heard anyone talk about "Scorching Ping Pong Girls" (Shakunetsu no Takyuu Musume). I only became aware of it because of some webms of its excellent electronic soundtrack; I think I saw some stills before that but assumed they were from a random older show because of the character designs, which look "early 2000s moe" and out of vogue. I was surprised to learn it had aired fairly recently.

I could recommend watching it purely for the soundtrack, which was done by MONACA, the same studio of musicians that did the music for Nier Automata along with a number of other shows. It has bizarre, energetic electronic music that is like nothing you've heard in an anime before. It might seem a little out of place at first in show about a high school girls' sports team, but I fell in love instantly. Each important girl has their own theme that matches their personality perfectly, and the songs progress in a way that matches the action on screen very well. I listen to the soundtrack by itself sometimes now, and again, I can really recommend watching this just to put context to the music, if you're into this kind of sound.

As for the story itself, it's a sports anime. I've never watched a sports anime other than this, so I have no idea if it would be considered derivative or not, or how common the themes expressed in it are, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and empathized on a level I was not expecting to. An innocent new girl with a passion and talent for ping pong joins a club and starts defeating everyone she faces one by one. Seems like pretty standard fare. The first arc, however, focuses on her senpai, the club leader and ace of the team that finds herself being pushed aside by the existence of this newcomer, and the emotions that come with that. She's jealous, scared of losing her position, feeling increasingly socially isolated and blackpilled about the nature of her relationship with her fellow club members, yet driven all the harder to defend her position. It's a look into her heart that I think anyone that has earnestly tried to compete at something or defined himself by his skill at one thing can relate to, and without spoiling anything, has a satisfying "healing" conclusion.

Takkyu Musume is about the experience of trying your hardest, the intense feeling of competing 1-on-1 that can't be matched by anything on this earth. If that speaks to you on some level, give it a watch.

I mentioned this one in the stream thread as well but Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran (made by Madhouse) is a great fucking show that I for some reason have never seen anyone talk about. It feels like a comedic/lighthearted version of those "silent wanderer"-type shows such as Kino's Journey or Mushishi. It's about a female samurai and her retarded friend who enter a new town every episode that has its own trouble going on, be it an evil cult, a corrupt mayor who has banned sake or two rival gangs fighting over the control of their town. A lot of the episodes play out like those old samurai films such as Yojimbo.

The only explanation(s) I could think of for its obscurity is that the show's cover on MAL looks atrocious and that it aired alongside some much more well-known series like Cardcaptor Sakura and Big O.

>>48989

The OST was great and the actual ping pong matches were fun to watch but the issue with the show that there were barely any of said matches. Half of the show is just a failed CGDCT series, I say "failed" because the characters aren't really fun enough to watch to sit through entire scenes of them just standing around and talking.

Fuse: Teppou Musume no Torimonochou: so underrated I had forgotten about it until a second ago. This is defintely an anime I'd describe with the term "hidden", even though it's from 2012 and it's a film rather than a TV series (mentioning this because seasonal shows get forgotten all the time but it's rare for films) I have NEVER seen anyone talk about it online but it's damn great. I'll admit that in terms of animation and art it's not on par with a Ghibli film or whatever but the worldbuilding is fucking fantastic and it still looks better than most 2012 anime I guess.

Also, if you liked either of these two >>48152 you will like this as well because it has a similar atmosphere and artstyle.

just finished rewatching Kado: the right choice. animation is half or more CG and there are a few choppy scenes but the show is really carried by its story.

it's about an alien anisotropic that comes to earth bringing 4 gifts to advance humanity, but he of course has his own motivations for doing so. our MC, shindo kojiro acts a negotiator for the human side whose philosophy regarding negotiations is not to try to take as much as you can from the other side while giving nothing back but rather to make sure both sides feel like they got something out of the deal.

The primary question the show asks is should humanity accept the alien's gifts or should we advance at our own pace?

Kagewani

A series (2 seasons) of very short episodes with a very distinct art style and some pretty good monster designs.

The series starts off with a monster of the week theme as the main character investigates sightings and reports of cryptids, but develops into an overarching plot about a biotech company trying to weaponize the cryptids

Sengoku Basara is the most absolutely dumbass fun show I've ever seen. It's an anime based off a Capcom game that took the Dynasty Warriors formula and cranked the anime bullshit up to 11. There's no really much to the show other than just watching to see come amazing fight scenes and to see how hilariously ridiculous shit gets but there's enough of a plot and character shennanigans to keep it interesting. Within the first 5 minutes of the show, you'll see a dude with an eyepatch wiedling six swords while riding a horse with exhaust pipes and handle bars, and a guy that can cause tornados with each swing of his axe ride two horses straight up a wall. I fucking love this ridiculously stupid show.

Joker Game

based on a series of spyfiction novels, the show follows the exploits of the members of D Agency, a new branch of the japanese intelligence services that is not tied down by the imperial army's antiquated mindset.

As the series progresses the agents clash with spies from various allied and enemy nations during WW2 as well as rival branches of the japanese army.

It's like a detective/murder mystery show with lots of investigating and trickery.

Depends on how you rate. I suppose I should have prefaced that if a show is par, i'll rate it a 5/10 (average is 5 in my mind) so being two standard deviations above average is a good show. I hate it when 7/10 is "average" for most people, doesn't make sense.

For anyone who hasn't seen Magnetic Rose (off of the three piece movie bundle "Memories") watch it tonight. It's an earlier work of Satoshi Kon; director of Perfect Blue, Paprika, Toyko Godfathers, Millennium Actress, and Paranoia Agent. Some of the most impressive visuals I've ever seen and incredibly immersive. One of, if not his best work.

I don't consider a 7 an average but rather something that is good/enjoyable but doesn't really go the extra mile. I've always considered a 8/10 something that I really can see myself rewatch and enjoy a lot and which in some field (art, writing, atmosphere etc.) excels in a way that the average anime from the same era doesn't. Meanwhile, a 7 is something I'll watch once and enjoy but probably won't look back on.

I just watched Ihatov Gensou - Kenji no Haru, a 50-minute biographical film from 1996 about a Japapanese writer from the Showa period but all the characters are anthropomorphised cats. It was aesthetically very pleasing; it had a lot of experimental visuals but the more realistic scenes set in the countryside or city on the other hand had very detailed backgrounds. I'd say it's what you would get if you were to combine The Wind Rises with Cat Soup. I've never seen anyone talk about it sadly, I only found it because the director has worked on a lot of these "artsy" anime which I enjoyed and I was looking at what other stuff he worked on. Nyaa has a torrent for it.

SPACE DANDY

Seriously. They made a big deal about this show and tried to hype it up, but it seemed like no one gave a shit. It's some of Watanabe's best work yet. It's totally hilarious, and visually amazing. The only way I'd be more impressed with the visuals was if it was entirely hand drawn. I was at a convention and Funimation was running a promo reel of all their properties that would be out on bluray/dvd/ soon. Everyone cheered for generic shonen show #9001 and collectible card game show #9002, but I was the only one cheering for Space Dandy like a damn fool. It actually has a good dub, too.

The whole point of it was presenting a set of episodic stories about the three main characters which showed off flashy animation and different styles in both visuals and storytelling. Not every show needs a serious plot to tie the episodes together, especially not a show like Space Dandy which was meant to be goofy and insane. Also, they actually did exactly what you asked for at the end of the second season/cour and it pretty much ruined the show.

Visually it looks really nice but the plot and characters were kind of boring which is weird because I mainly watched after seeing it getting praised online for it supposedly reflecting modern-day Japanese issues or something. I don't see how the elves, who are hyperactive and constantly multiply, are in any way similar to the new generation of Japanese people who are often introverted and lack an interest in partiticipating in society.

Unless the joke is supposed to be that the Japanese might get replaced by foreigners who seem overly social and energetic to them but I'm guessing that's way too farfetched.

Wait til you get to the Red Ribbon Army arc. Better than anything Z or Super ever crapped out. Anime in general doesn't really lend itself to enemies that are individually weak but come in huge numbers, but the Red Ribbon Army made it work amazingly.

No one ever does, and honestly, it's a shame. A generation grew up on the over the top action of Z and so few care about the first half of the story. Classic Dragonball has a sense of adventure that sorta went out the window with Z, which is all the more weird given that Z actually goes to space. When you do get to the Red Ribbon Army, take note of all of the different backdrops for the action and contrast that with the constant greens of Namek - It's jarring. The fight choreography is also really good since this was before battles devolved into beam spam and earth shattering impacts.

Started watching the first episode myself and was getting something of a Noein vibe from it, especially the render style for close ups. Which was apparently right on the money; both are Satelight productions, so I assume there's a sharing of at least some staff.

Is Belladona of Sadness obscure lol? I think it was pretty noteworthy at the time. It'd definitely worth a watch as it's just a movie so no big commitment there and the art is unique and top notch.

There's this Soviet-Japanese collaborative cartoon film called Lolo the Penguin that was surprisingly good and has some good morals stuff in there. It's for children I guess but Russian children so like 45 US age.

Belladonna of Sadness might not be obscure but it is older than most anime watchers tend to know about. Most of what you'll see in the before 2000s thread will be 80s stuff and maybe some 90s stuff so 70s anime goes under the radar.

>Russian children so like 45 US age.

Makes sense a 7 year old Russian lad has faced more hardship and seen more vodka with their Alcohol Fetal Syndrome misshapen eyes than any 45 year old US citizen.

It's fairly popular with radfems, popular enough that it got a 4K restoration several years ago and overshadows the other Animerama films. Shame too, since A Thousand and One Nights and The Sensualist are kino.

Twilight Q is a Twilight Zone inspired two episode OVA from 1987, complete with "We now control your set" preface. The first is the more normal of the two, where a girl finds a camera with a photo from the future. It's pleasant, with all the 80's beach aesthetics you could ever want. The second is absolutely bonkers, being an almost completely experimental work by Mamoru Oshii with a running narration and jumping from sparse extraordinary animation to lengthy slideshows of city photographs with filters on them. If you've ever watched something with great talent but bad budgeting, like Kare Kano, you'll know what that entails.

Apparently this was originally supposed to continue with new talent on each episode, but like many interesting OVA's of the time the money just wasn't in it.

I just realised that no one in this thread has posted Dantalian no Shoka. It's been a while since I watched it and I remember some questions regarding the plot being left completely unanswered but overall it was very aesthetically pleasing. I'm planning on rewatching it soon.

I feel like the series falls under this unofficial subgenre of experimental/artsy episodic anime, in which I'd also include Panty & Stocking, Space Dandy, Mononoke and Katanagatari.

The second Twilight Q OVA was instrumental in Mamoru Oshii getting his career back on track after Angel's Egg tanked at the box office and he had a falling out with Miyazaki over an unfinished Lupin III movie they were assigned to. Twilight Q was where Oshii met many collaborators that would form Headgear with him and later create Patlabor, which revived Oshii's career from then on.
