The concept of free and open-source software is an excellent one, but it falls apart when you consider that programmers are human beings who regularly want to earn money and spend money, and have a roof under head and a wife with kids in the bed.
And without financial support, development proceeds slowly; for example, GoldenDict is currently at version 1.0.1 from 2010-12-03 At least, this is the latest version with source code that I could find.
I made donations to the author of this program, but I haven't seen any progress. This program still doesn't support the Devanagari script.
