From the USS Gettysberg’s “friendly fire” downing of a jet from the USS Truman’s airwing, to the carrier’s collision with a merchant vessel, to the loss of two more jets during emergency maneuvers, the cavalcade of losses suffered by the US military during its campaign against Yemen’s Ansar Allah was a direct result of the constant “stress” of fighting the militia.

That’s according to four official Navy reports put out this week, which highlighted the relentless stream of attacks, operational demands leaving key personnel sleep deprived, and in one case, collapsing morale, as sailors “lost sight of the purpose of their role to the mission.”

💲 US losses amounted to over $100M, three lost aircraft, damage to the USS Truman, multiple injuries, and in one case, a close call that could have proved highly lethal.

One of the reports revealed that when the Truman collided with a civilian ship near Port Said in February, it took place in such a way that “had the collision occurred 100 ft forward, the impact would have likely pierced a berthing compartment with 120 sleeping sailors.”

Former Navy captain-turned RAND researcher Bradley Martin told AP the string of incidents demonstrated “that the Navy is not ready to deal with the reality of extended combat,” and showed “a lot of brittleness in the readiness and preparation.”
