There was never that many people on 8/pol/. It peaked about at 1k unique posters per 24h (3k per 72h) and people bled off constantly. Endchan, neinchan, meguca, mlpol, etc. Some of them died suddenly, others had heavy attrition due to from spam and no new blood coming in, so a lot of people ended up going offline or hiding out in discord and telegram channels they could vet for retards.
