Police in Northern Ireland say 17 officers were injured during a second night of anti-immigrant violence in the town of Ballymena, where rioters threw bricks, bottles, petrol bombs and fireworks and set several vehicles and houses on fire.
Police used water cannon and fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of several hundred people. The Police Service of Northern Ireland said Wednesday that the violence died down by about 1 a.m. Five people were arrested on suspicion of “riotous behavior.”
What sparked the violence
Violence erupted Monday after a peaceful march to show support for the family of the victim of an alleged sexual assault on the weekend. Two 14-year-old boys have been charged.
The suspects have not been identified because of their age. They were supported in court by a Romanian interpreter.
After the march, a crowd of mostly young people set several houses on fire and pelted police with projectiles. The Police Service of Northern Ireland said 15 officers were injured that night.
There were similar scenes after dark on Tuesday, as well as small pockets of disorder in several other Northern Ireland towns.
Police said agitators on social media were helping fuel what Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson called “racist thuggery.”

'It's pure racism': Northern Ireland's first minister urges public to reject 'unacceptable' violence
We brought you Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill's condemnation of the violence earlier (see 14.50 post).
This afternoon, she's spoken to the media alongside her deputy first minister Emma Little Pengelly. Both said the violence in Ballymena "must stop".
O'Neill said: "It's pure racism, there is no other way to dress it up."
She added two separate issues are "perhaps being conflated" and "they should not be".
"The first is the issue of an attack on the young woman, and I want her to have justice, and I want to stand full-square with her family, and I want the criminal justice system to do its work," she said.
"Separate to that is the racism that we're seeing… people being firebombed out of their homes, people having their doors knocked in, having their windows being smashed, families being intimidated.
"That is absolutely unacceptable and everything that needs to be done to bring it to an end is our focus in terms of the engagement we have with the PSNI."

A fire has reportedly broken out at a leisure centre in another town in the same county as Ballymena.
Footage on social media shows masked individuals smashing windows and setting fires outside the building in Larne.
The map below shows where Larne is, about 20 miles east of Ballymena in County Antrim.
Local Alliance MLA Danny Donnelly said the leisure centre "has been attacked by masked thugs".
"Windows smashed and fires lit nearby," he posted on social media.
"Larne does not need this."

Our correspondent Connor Gillies has been talking to locals in Ballymena after back-to-back nights of violence.
Police say they've been fuelled by anti-immigration protests, and it's left some people fearing to leave their house.
One immigrant, from Bulgaria, told Gillies she's lived in Ballymena for nine years.
She said she's pursued education there, paid taxes and contributed to the community.

Salford North West Greater Manchester had protests yesterday ,
GMP said: "This afternoon (Wednesday 11 June 2025), we mounted a response to disorder in Salford.
"Between 50 and 60 people gathered on Lower Broughton Road at around 1.30pm, using cars and wheelie bins to block off the road.
