James Emanuel Boasberg went to St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C. After high school, Boasberg attended Yale University, where he was a member of the undergraduate society Skull and Bones, and he graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts. From 1986 to 1987, Boasberg was a history teacher and women's basketball coach at the Horace Mann School in New York City.
