It's fun and all, but I hate the tacky aesthetics of it and don't like how it's basically a jumbled-up mess of classic Doom and more modern features.

Brutal Doom is the very definition of modders inability to know when to stop.
Some extra gore and weapon feedback is nice, but then you have a billion useless features that juts make the game look cluttered.
'less is more' is heresy to modders

Brutal Doom would be much better if it wasn't going overkill with the pixelated graphics.
I genuinely think a remaster of Doom 1 and 2 would look amazing if done in a similar way to for example the Sonic 2 HD project….just revamping the art to a higher res/fidelity, not re-stylizing it.
Some have tried this already, with mixed results. All of them are still great, but the original artists intentions are lost along the way.

Brutal Doom isn't as good as vanilla doom, and it's more style over substance, but boy even though it's just kinda flashy gore and explosions I still have fun with it. Watching that video made me happy because I adore Doom but it's been too long since I booted it up and played it; even modded like that the game is just too fun to want to put down for too long.

That's not dadrock, and boomers aren't usually into metal past the earlier bands anway.
The real problem is that modern metal recordings sound so hi-fi and soulless and that replacing the original soundtrack with cover tracks featuring "better" audio quality is kind of tryhard anyway.
If someone's going to do remake the soundtrack, I wish they'd come up with a new FM adaptation made with the format in mind. Compare the original Adlib Wolfenstein 3D sounds to Doom's and the latter comes across almost as an afterthought.

Some of the creepiest times I had in Doom were without music. Played Aliens TC that way, just like the author recommended (in total darkness, no music, sound fx cranked up). Also played Classic Episode that way, just because I was using an old port that didn't do music. Good times!
BTW those are both vanilla episodes, you can even play them in DOSBox:
ftp://ftp.fu-berlin.de/pc/games/idgames/themes/aliens (it's the u_alntc.* files)

heard there was a light version or some shit in the making, might try that one out but don't expect much. they always pozz one thing or another in their "enhancements". i did like a few things but there was just way too much fuzz too for my taste. maybe good for less purist npcs and zoomer types, not for me.

My experience with Doom goes back to flash game ports and the XBLA version on 360. I've been enjoying GZDoom set to vanilla settings at 640x400 full screen and no texture filtering. I've also given brutal doom a try.
I'm sad that the auto aim isn't consistent enough for me to play without mouse look without feeling frustrated my shots aren't going up. One of my favorite parts of doom was only having to turn left or right.
