Are self-directed IRAs worth it for tax benefits, or are they more trouble than they’re worth?

I looked into a self-directed IRA for real estate investing, and while the tax benefits are appealing, the paperwork and restrictions were overwhelming. Plus, custodians charge fees for everything. If you’re not actively managing investments, a traditional IRA might be the safer, hassle-free option. Anyone here actually using one?

Self-directed IRAs offer great tax advantages, but they require strict compliance with IRS rules. Investing in real estate or private businesses through an IRA sounds amazing, but one wrong move (like self-dealing) could trigger penalties. I was researching custodians and came across The Entrust Group reviews https://www.pissedconsumer.com/the-entrust-group/RT-F.html seems like experiences vary widely depending on how hands-on you want to be.
