Newsom shuns blame for California’s unseemly issues

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s obvious efforts to raise his national profile have taken two forms – touting California as a societal model and criticizing red states such as Florida and Texas for their supposed shortcomings.

Increasingly, Newsom employs a third tactic – shifting blame for California’s less seemly aspects.

That tendency is particularly evident in something that Californians rate as one of their top concerns – its worst-in-the-nation incidence of homelessness, manifested in thousands of squalid encampments in the state’s cities.

While running for governor in 2018, Newsom promised to appoint a cabinet-level official to concentrate on homelessness but later, when reporters pressed him, responded, “You want to know who’s the homeless czar?” Newsom. “I’m the homeless czar in the state of California.”

Despite that self-appointed role, as homelessness continued to grow, officially approaching 200,000 people but probably much higher, Newsom began shunning responsibility.

Last year, he blamed local officials for a lack of effective action, at one point suspending state funds. He later restored the money but continued to castigate them.

“If we can’t clean up the encampments and address what’s happening chronically on our streets, I’m going to be hard-pressed to make a case to the Legislature to provide them one dollar more,” Newsom said as he introduced a new state budget in January.

Another example of Newsom’s fingerpointing occurred last week as a congressional committee dominated by Republicans delved into why states – particularly California – handed out billions of dollars in unemployment insurance benefits to fraudsters.

The state auditor had issued a report citing the Employment Development Department’s “poor planning and ineffective management” for shortcomings in handling unemployment insurance claims. But the current EDD director, Nancy Farias, sent the committee a four-page letter blaming Donald Trump’s administration for as much as $30 billion in fraudulent payments.

“Unfortunately, the Trump Administration expressed no interest in establishing (a) coordinated national response when these (emergency pandemic unemployment) programs were initiated in 2020, leaving states to fend for themselves against a clear pattern of sophisticated, international criminal syndicates at work,” Farias’ letter, which no doubt was approved by the governor’s office, said.

A third example of blameshifting also popped up last week when Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp cited Newsom’s support for lenient prison policies that allowed the alleged killer of Selma policeman Gonzalo Carrasco to be released after serving just six months of a 64-month sentence for a previous crime.

“Today, Governor Gavin Newsom, and every legislator in the state of California who supports this over-reaching phenomenon they try to disguise as legitimate criminal justice reform, has the blood of this officer on their hands,” Smittcamp said.

“The governor and his political allies who continue the quest to close state prisons are increasing the incidents of violence to everyone who lives in, or visits, the state of California,” Smittcamp continued. “No city or county is safe from the wrath of this misguided thinking, and this mismanaged prison system.”

Newsom quickly fired back, referring to the plea bargain that Smittcamp’s office accepted: “She should blame herself. I’ve been listening to this for years from her. She has the prosecutorial discretion. Ask her what she did in terms of prosecuting that case.”

Smittcamp persisted, saying, “Governor Newsom continues to demonstrate his ignorance and lack of understanding of how the criminal justice system works. His arrogant and defensive response is proof positive that he is attempting to deflect responsibility for his failed policies.”

It is outrageous that the alleged killer, a self-proclaimed gang member with an extensive criminal record, was released after just six months. And it does exemplify the uber-lenient penal policies California has adopted in recent years, begun by former Gov. Jerry Brown and continued by Newsom.

"A campaign of CoronaVac (Sinovac Biotech, Beijing, China) vaccinations was deployed for health professionals at Rajavithi Hospital, Thailand, for 3 days. A total of 2,296 people were vaccinated."

A total of 15/20 (75%) personnel had ocular symptoms (average age, 36.9 ± 12.9 years; females, 86.7%). These 15 personnel include all who worked in the rooms when the accident occurred and continued working for 4–6 h (13 personnel) and those who started working after the accident and continued working for 3 h (2 personnel). The other 5/20 (25%) personnel who were in the rooms after the accident and worked for half an hour had no symptoms."

The nurse who accidentally dropped the vaccine in room 4 and the assistant who wore contact lens and worked in room 3 manifested the most severe and longest clinical manifestations for 2 weeks. This person received topical fluorometholone QID for 3 days. The rest of the affected personnel received topical antihistamine or lubricant. All showed full recovery at the last examinations, 46.7% showed full recovery within 72 h. All reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction results were negative.

We hypothesize, after finding no other likely association, such as contamination of cleaning agents or malfunction of ventilation system, that the evaporated solution of the vaccine was associated with ocular surface erosions of the affected personnel. Supportive evidence included a temporal relation between the accident and the clinical manifestations and a spatial relation between the area of the accident and the severity of the clinical presentations. The physical evidence on the ocular surface and skin supports the hypothesis of exposure to potential volatile substances [7].

Tank warfare has evolved. Like most military technological innovations, the ability to make a modern main battle tank survivable has been outstripped by the fielding of defensive systems designed to overcome such defenses. Don’t get me wrong: tanks still have a vital role to play on the modern battlefield. Their status as a mobile bunker is invaluable in the kind of meat-grinder conflicts of attrition that have come to define the current stage of large-scale ground combat. Speed and armor still contribute to survivability, and the main gun of a tank remains one of the deadliest weapons on the modern battlefield.

But the modern tank performs best as part of a combined arms team, supported by infantry (mounted and unmounted) and copious amounts of supporting arms (artillery and close air support.) As part of such a team, especially one that is well-trained in the art of close combat, the tank remains an essential weapon of war. However, if operated in isolation, a tank is simply an expensive mobile coffin.

In a sickening update that should shake the conscience of every defender of human rights and Constitutional rights in Canada, Ontario police arrest Josh Alexander, who protested boys in girls’ bathrooms, for attending class.

I have been following this story from the beginning. See HERE and HERE for background. To sum it up: 16-year-old Ontario resident Josh Alexander was penalized with a 20-day suspension last year by his Catholic school “after he organized a walkout in protest of male students being permitted into the girls’ washroom.” In an interview around the time of Alexander’s initial suspension, the teen told LifeSiteNews that he believes, in accordance with Catholic teaching and the Bible, that there are only two sexes. Under the freedom of religion, Alexander has the guaranteed right to affirm this. Or so we thought.

Liberty Coalition Canada (LCC) took up Josh’s case and sent a “Notice of Intention to Appeal Suspension” to Mary-Lise Rowat, Superintendent of Educational Services at Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. But Josh’s situation deteriorated, and fast. LifeSite news wrote in an update February 1:

Alexander’s lawyer, James Kitchen, the chief litigator for Liberty Coalition Canada (LCC), told LifeSiteNews today that Renfrew County Catholic District School Board won’t “permit him (Alexander) to attend school for the rest of the year because, according to them, Josh’s beliefs constitute ‘bullying of trans students.’”

What nonsense. Mind you, the school is bullying Josh over his religious rights and freedoms, while doing severe damage to what the school proclaims about honoring Catholic teachings.

I previously wrote to the Diocese of Pembroke, of which Josh’s school, St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, and the Renfrew County Catholic District are a part. See the full correspondence HERE. Below is an excerpt from that correspondence, where you’ll notice immediately how institutions are able to hide (unintentionally or not) behind red tape, even when in violation of their own stated values.

From all appearances, the influence of Bishop Desrochers is questionable in a hierarchy that also appears to be corrupted at the highest levels and will only change with public opposition. Without any pushback, Canadians will lose more of their rights. So far, the Catholic faith, to all appearances, is of no importance at Josh’s school or within the diocese. Ethically, therefore, why is it even being funded by taxpayers as a Separate School system, categorized as religious? The news broke this month that the Ontario government faces a legal challenge for funding Catholic schools; St. Joseph’s Catholic High School and the Renfrew District School Board makes the challenge easy.

Far too many people’s rights are being trampled unconstitutionally in the rush to adhere to the woke ideology. In Josh’s case, he is a whipping boy for the intolerant in a country that boasts of its “tolerance” and “diversity.” His persecution is in a Catholic school which is apparently operating without any concern for the Catholic faith that the school professes to uphold.

St. Joseph’s Catholic School boasts about its faith and its “atmosphere of trust” on its website:

After the appalling suspension of Josh until the end of the year, Josh showed up to class, in accordance with his rights and in defiance of the woke gods of his Catholic school. The result: the school called in police to arrest him, fascist style. Josh tweeted:

The cowards tried to hide the impact of the school’s actions:

“The entire class was dismissed while the staff handled my situation,” the boy continued. “Shortly after, Ontario Provincial Police arrived and asked me to leave. Once again, I respectfully declined and they arrested me.”

Josh is a youngster who is bearing the burden for the rights of all believers, a burden that adults should be carrying. His attorney, James Kitchen, chief litigator for Liberty Coalition Canada (LCC), “told LifeSiteNews that Alexander’s decision to go back to school today was ‘an intelligent choice of a young man who knows what he is doing.’”

In a society that claims to abhor bullying, it is criminal that institutional bullying is now at play in the case of Josh and in full violation of Canada’s constitution.

WASHINGTON — House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is vowing to get to the bottom of the “collusion” to censor The Post’s Hunter Biden laptop scoops when former Twitter executives face questioning Wednesday morning.

Comer (R-Ky.) will lead the grilling of ex-Twitter employees Vijaya Gadde, Yoel Roth and James Baker in one of his first acts as committee chairman — as Republicans attempt to determine the backstory behind the platform’s actions.

“Tomorrow’s hearing is the House Oversight and Accountability Committee’s first step in examining the coordination between the federal government and Big Tech to restrict protected speech and interfere in the democratic process,” Comer said in a statement provided to The Post.

“Twitter, under previous leadership, was a private company the federal government used to accomplish what it constitutionally cannot: limit the free exercise of speech.”

The social media giant barred distribution of The Post’s articles that linked then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to his son Hunter and brother James Biden’s foreign business deal weeks ahead of the 2020 election — claiming without evidence that the reporting violated a “hacked materials” policy.

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said at a 2021 congressional hearing that it was a “total mistake” to censor The Post, but refused to detail who was responsible.

Billionaire Elon Musk, who took over the company in October, immediately fired Gadde, the social network’s former policy director who received a $12.5 million severance package.

Roth, the former director of trust and safety, resigned in November and Musk fired Baker, a top attorney at Twitter who formerly worked as the FBI’s general counsel, in December for allegedly undermining his attempts to expose historical censorship communications.

Musk’s recent “Twitter Files” disclosures revealed close cooperation between the FBI and Twitter in the 2020 election — even though the First Amendment prohibits the government from policing lawful domestic speech.

The FBI paid Twitter $3.5 million from October 2019 to February 2021 to process its moderation requests, according to a document released by Musk, but it remains unclear to what extent officials weighed in specifically on the laptop, which was provided to The Post by Delaware computer repairman John Paul Mac Isaac — who showed paperwork indicating that Hunter Biden legally abandoned the device.

Mac Isaac says he gave the original laptop to the FBI in December 2019. He later provided a copy of its files to Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, who alerted The Post.

Musk revealed tantalizing avenues of inquiry for congressional investigators, including a secret communication on the eve of The Post’s first laptop bombshell.

San Francisco-based FBI agent Elvis Chan used a special transmission platform called Teleporter to send Roth and at least one other person 10 documents on the night of Oct. 13, 2020, just hours before The Post’s initial laptop story was published, according to Musk-released evidence.

In July 2020 — three months before The Post broke the laptop story — Chan emailed Roth suggesting that beginning 30 days before Election Day, Twitter executives would be granted temporary security clearances to discuss threats with FBI officials, according to Musk’s disclosures.

“In the months leading up to the New York Post’s report on the Biden family’s business schemes based on contents from Hunter Biden’s laptop, the FBI advised senior Twitter executives to question the validity of any Hunter Biden story,” Comer said in his statement ahead of the hearing.

“Immediately following the publication of the New York Post’s article, America witnessed a coordinated campaign by social media companies, mainstream news, and the intelligence community to suppress and delegitimize the existence of Hunter Biden’s laptop and its contents.”

The Oversight Committee hearing is likely to be the first of many investigating the saga. On Monday, the Republican-led House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees demanded interviews from 12 of the 51 former intelligence officials who implied five days after The Post’s initial reports that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation.

The Post’s first laptop bombshell revealed that Vadym Pozharskyi, an executive at the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, emailed Hunter in 2015 to thank him for the “opportunity to meet your father” — directly contradicting Biden’s September 2019 claim that he’d “never spoken” with his son about “his overseas business dealings” and his August 2019 claim that “I have never discussed, with my son or my brother or with anyone else, anything having to do with their businesses. Period.”

The laptop revelations attracted questions about possible corruption and conflicts of interest in foreign affairs.

The Biden campaign vaguely denied the initial laptop article. But further reporting revealed that Joe Biden attended a 2015 DC dinner one day before the Burisma exec’s email with a group of his son’s associates, including Pozharskyi and a Kazakhstani trio that posed for a photo with the Bidens.

Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia has called on the West to stop using Ukrainians in a “proxy war”

The West is onlyprolonging the bloodshed in Ukraine by supplying Kiev with weapons and waging a proxy waragainst Moscow, Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, said on Tuesday. The statement came the same day US President Joe Biden vowed to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes.”

“The prospects of peace will be closer when the flooding of Ukraine with weapons stops… and when they realistically listen to our concerns,” Nebenzia told reporters at a press conference. He urged Ukraine’s Western backers to stop “using Ukrainians to wage a proxy war against us.”

Asked by a reporter if a peaceful resolution to the conflict could happen in 2023, the diplomat replied: “We all hope for peace.”

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine nearly a year ago, citing the need to protect the people of Donbass and Kiev’s failure to implement the 2014-2015 Minsk peace accords. Many Western countries and NATO members have since supplied Ukraine with heavy weapons, including anti-armor systems, multiple rocket launchers, howitzers and combat drones. Last month, the US, Britain and Germany pledged for the first time to deliver tanks.

In his annual address to Congress on Tuesday, President Biden described Russia’s military operation in Ukraine as “a test for the ages” and threat to “our security and prosperity.”

“Together, we did what America always does at our best.We led. We united NATO and built a global coalition… We stood with the Ukrainian people,” Biden said.

Russia, meanwhile, maintains that foreign arms will not change the course of the conflict and only lead to further escalation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in December that the US and NATO were “directly involved” by providing weapons and training to Ukrainian troops.

Ukrainian officials insist that peace can only be achieved if Russia agrees to surrender its newly incorporated territories. Moscow has rejected these terms as unacceptable.

The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, together with two other former Ukrainian territories – the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions – became parts of Russia after holding referendums on the matter in September. Crimea did the same shortly after the 2014 coup in Kiev.

UK offers to train Ukrainian pilots

PM Rishi Sunak has announced plans to expand assistance to Kiev’s marines and aviators

The UK will step up its military assistance to Ukraine in the coming year and will expand its training program to include fighter pilots and marines, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office stated on Wednesday. The announcement comes as Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky visits London.

The training will be in addition to the recruit training program already running in the UK, which has already seen 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers brought to battle readiness in the last six months, Downing Street said, stating that it hopes to upgrade the skills of a further 20,000 troops in 2023.

“I am proud that today we will expand that training from soldiers to marines and fighter jet pilots, ensuring Ukraine has a military able to defend its interests well into the future,” said Sunak in a statement.

His office also noted that last week a number of Ukrainian troops had arrived in the UK to learn how to command the Challenger 2 tank after Sunak announced the delivery of the hardware to Kiev last month. Additionally, London said it will offer longer-range capabilities to Ukraine in the hopes of helping Kiev relieve the pressure on its frontlines.

Ukraine has repeatedly demanded more advanced weaponry from the West, including tanks, drones and longer-range missiles, arguing that it needs such capabilities to push back Russian forces and take control of territories that it claims as its own.

After the US, Germany, and UK announced the delivery of Leopard 2, M1 Abrams and Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine’s armed forces last month, the Ukrainian government stepped up itsdemands to also include US-made F-16 fighter jets. Berlin and Washington, however, have so far refused to send them, fearing Kiev would use them to strike Russian territory and thus escalate the conflict further.

Downing Street’s statement comes as Zelensky is making his first trip to the UK since fighting broke out between Moscow and Kiev in late February of last year. The president is expected to address the British parliament and hold talks with Sunak about further military aid to Ukraine.

Sunak’s office also said it would soon announce more sanctions on Russia, which will target individuals who are accused of helping President Vladimir Putin “build his personal wealth,” as well as companies who are “profiting from the Kremlin’s war machine.”

Boris Pistorius said it was “difficult” to determine if Kiev could retake Crimea and Donbass

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has expressed uncertainty over Ukraine’s ability to achieve its goal of retaking Crimea and Donbass. The official claimed that the West’s continued support for Kiev would be key in determining the outcome of the conflict with Russia. Speaking to Germany’s Bild newspaper on Tuesday during an official visit to the Ukrainian capital, Pistorius was asked if Kiev would manage to restore control over all the territories within its 1991 borders.

The minister described the question as “difficult” and likened it to a “look into the crystal ball.” While stopping short of a prediction, Pistorius commended the bravery of Kiev’s forces, adding that “it is vital that we continue to support Ukraine to the best of our ability.”

“This is an intense war of attrition. There are insanely high losses,” the German official said.

When asked if he stood by his previous maxim that “Ukraine must win the war,” Pistorius replied: “Yes, of course.”

According to the German minister, much like Ukraine’s ability to make territorial gains, the prospect of peace negotiations remains uncertain.

Pistorius, who took office on January 19, confirmed Berlin’s commitment to providing Kiev with 14 Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks by late March, with the training of Ukrainian personnel expected to start in the near future.

Pistorius stressed that he sees the delivery of air defense systems in the coming months as crucial, whilecalling into question the potential usefulness of submarines, should Kiev request them further down the line.

Responding to Western nations’ plans to supply Ukraine with tanks and other heavy weapons, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu warned on Tuesday that “such moves are essentially dragging NATO countries into the conflict and could lead to an unpredictable escalation.”

However, he expressed confidence that the Russian military would destroy the hardware.

Top Russian officials have consistently argued that Western arms deliveries only serve to prolong the conflict unnecessarily.

Exiled opposition leader accuses Western-backed forces of using neo-Nazis in Ukraine

The US and EU have a vested interest in the country, no matter how radical the government becomes, Viktor Medvedchuk said

Radical political forces are a weapon routinely used by Western-backed actors in Ukraine to stifle opponents, exiled opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk believes. The US and its allies are willing to overlook this as long as it serves their interests, he said.

“Neo-Nazism is the cudgel that pro-Western forces turn to when they lose. Then, the mask of democracy and peacemaking comes off instantly, and opponents find themselves back in the harsh reality ofpolitical cannibalism,” the Ukrainian politician wrote in an analysis of the ongoing conflict, which was published on Wednesday by RIA Novosti.

Medvedchuk’s Opposition Platform – For Life party was the largest opposition faction in the Ukrainian parliament before a government crack down led by President Vladimir Zelensky banned the bloc for supposedly being pro-Russian.

The party was targeted because it had every chance to topple Zelensky at the ballot box, he said, citing opinion polls, but a “system of oppression” was deployed against it.

Historically, in Ukraine “as soon as a non pro-Western force gains ground, scores higher approval, pro-Western forces do everything to ban it,” he wrote. Radicals in the media “slander opposition politicians, threaten their supporters and urge a mass crackdown.”

Today, any speech in the pro-Western media is hailed asfreedom of expression, whereas outlets allowing dissent are “declared propagandists, and its journalists branded traitors” and blacklisted.

The West never sees this as incitement, as a call for violence and lawlessness, as it never sees the ensuing violence and lawlessness.

Meanwhile, thugs who are used to suppress the opposition act with impunity in Ukraine, even maiming and killing their targets, Medvedchuk asserted. Any attempt to defend oneself is treated as “aggression and separatism.”

“Today, Ukraine is in the hands of people, who don’t speak Ukrainian [as their mother tongue] and who are mostly not ethnic Ukrainians,” the politician stated. “They turned the Ukrainian language into a ‘friend-or-foe’ designatorto cover up their true intentions.”

The Ukrainian case stands out because of the resources that the US and its allies have invested into tearing the country away from Russia and showcasing it as an example of pro-Western development, Medvedchuk believes.

If Kiev fails, the “political bankruptcy” of Washington’s global leadership would be exposed, as will the failure of EU expansion, which the politician compared to the construction of theTower of Babelin terms of the chaos it produces.

Societe Generale SA has been drawn into the industry-wide investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission whether banks’ staff have made use of unauthorized communication channels.

The French lender’s US unit received an information request from the SEC “focused on compliance with record-keeping requirements in connection with business-related communications on messaging platforms that were not approved by the firm,” it said Wednesday. “The inquiry follows a number of regulatory settlements in 2022 with other firms covering similar matters,” Societe Generale said, adding it’s “cooperating with the investigation.”

US regulators have already announced more than $2 billion in total penalties in the matter, and have expanded their probe to include hedge funds and asset management firms. They’re worried that the rapid spread of messaging services such as WhatsApp undermines a requirement for finance firms to archive business-related communications, opening the door for misconduct to go unnoticed.

Moving Fed policy rate to 5.00%-5.25% this year seems reasonable, Williams says

New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said on Wednesday the U.S. central bank still has more interest rate rises ahead of it and will need to keep monetary policy restrictive for some time to come.

Moving to a federal funds rate of between 5.00% and 5.25% "seems a very reasonable view of what we'll need to do this year in order to get the supply and demand imbalances down," Williams said at a Wall Street Journal event. Williams' comments were his first since the Fed's decision last week to moderate the pace of its rate rise campaign. Last Wednesday, the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee boosted its overnight target rate by a quarter of a percentage point to the 4.50%-4.75% range as it continued its effort to lower high levels of inflation. The Fed's rate hike was followed just days later by surprisingly strong jobs data that suggested the central bank may have to raise rates even more as it seeks to better balance strong demand with available supply in the economy. Williams said the prospect of a lower federal funds rate next year is driven mostly by monetary policy adjusting to a weaker inflation environment.

Museum explains why it’s removing Chinese cameras

A local senator has deemed the foreign-made devices a ‘national security’ risk

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra is taking down security cameras made in China as a precaution, the museum chair said on Wednesday. This comes during a rise in suspicion towards PRC-made electronics in Australia.

The institution will be removing all security cameras made by Hikvision, a Hangzhou-based and state-owned manufacturer of CCTV surveillance devices. “It’s not because we’ve had any notice of anything untoward but it’s an abundance of caution,” the newly-appointed Australian War Memorial chair Kim Beazley told the Canberra Times. The museum will gradually take down the eleven Chinese-made cameras throughout the year, stating that the Hikvision models made up a small fraction of the 200 other cameras and were not filming any “significant historical exhibits.”

Australian opposition senator and Shadow Minister for Cyber Security and Countering Foreign Interference James Paterson welcomed the decision. “A Chinese government-linked surveillance company has no place on the grounds of our most sacred monument to Australians who fought and died for freedom,” Paterson told the Canberra Times. The politician added when speaking to ABC TV that he was working on a “full audit” of the government’s departments and agencies to assess exposure to possible surveillance by Beijing. Paterson is certain that Chinese-made cameras pose “national security risks.”

Hikvision has yet to comment on the decision by the Australian museum, but it denied similar “spying” accusations from the UK in November. In a statement to news agencies, the company guaranteed that it had no visibility into end users’ video data nor did it store or sell it.

Similarly, Australia’s National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) decided to remove all cameras made by Chinese company Dahua from their head office in Geelong, Victoria, according to reports by the Daily Telegraph.

Beijing has also yet to comment on the matter. When faced with these kinds of accusations from the US over Dahua and Hikvision in the past, Beijing denied that the companies were being used for spying.

Australia has previously expressed suspicion towards Chinese electronics, when Canberra barred international tech giant Huawei and ZTE from creating a 5G communication network in the country in 2018. Beijing’s ambassador, Cheng Jingye, described the measure as politically-motivated discrimination against a Chinese company.

This development comes as Washington, London, and Canberra signed the AUKUS security pact in 2021, with the proclaimed goal of “sustaining peace and stability” in the region by acquiring nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Tan Kefei slammed the agreement in December, calling it a source of nuclear proliferation as the US was “vigorously” deploying nukes in the region in December. He added that Washington needed to “abandon the Cold War mentality.”

The death toll from the catastrophic earthquakes in southern Türkiye and northwestern Syria has now moved past 10,000, officials said on Wednesday.

Rescuers, meanwhile, continue to clear the rubble and look for survivors. Teams from dozens of countries are helping locals in both states.

In Türkiye, over 8,500 people were killed and nearly 50,000 injured, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters after arriving in Kahramanmaras, a city in the province where the epicenter of the 7.7 magnitude quake was recorded.

According to Erdogan, nearly 6,500 buildings were destroyed. Vice President Fuat Oktay said earlier that more than 450,000 residents who had lost their homes were being housed in student dormitories.

People are still being found alive under the rubble. Anadolu news agency reported that two women were rescued after spending 48 hours trapped in the debris of a destroyed apartment block in Hatay Province.

On Monday morning, a series of powerful earthquakes ravaged the southern part of the country, leveling houses in several cities. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described it as “the biggest disaster” since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake.

A three-month state of emergency was declared in the ten affected provinces on Tuesday. All schools across the country were closed for a week.

In neighboring Syria, more than 1,260 were killed and nearly 2,300 injured, Health Minister Hassan al-Ghabbash said. Separately, over 1,400 dead and around 2,700 injured were reported in the northwestern parts of Syria not controlled by the government, according to the Washington Post.

Al Ghabbash said officials were working “around the clock” to maintain the flow of medical and other supplies to Aleppo, Latakia and Hama, the regions hit hardest by the quake. More than 70 mosques have been equipped to function as shelters, according to the government.
