Pope accepts resignation of Canadian bishop accused of sexual abuse

Pope Francis on Tuesday said he had accepted the resignation of a Canadian bishop who has been named in a class-action lawsuit against the church that alleges sexual assault.

The pope did not give a reason for replacing Jean-Pierre Blais, the 75-year-old bishop of Baie-Comeau in the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, and the diocese said the resignation was not linked to the allegations. He also named a replacement: Reverend Pierre Charland, 62, currently a leading member of Canada's Roman Catholic Franciscan order.

In a statement, the pope noted that any bishop who turns 75 is automatically requested to offer his resignation. The pope makes a decision on whether to accept the offer "after he has examined all the circumstances", the statement said.

Blais is mentioned in a list of sexual predators filed as part of a victims' class action against the Archdiocese of Quebec. He has denied any wrongdoing.

"The nomination of a new bishop ... is not linked to the allegations against Bishop Blais," the Diocese of Baie-Comeau said in an emailed statement, noting the church's policy of requiring all those who hit 75 to offer their resignation.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s prosecutor-general said Tuesday that former leader Jair Bolsonaro knew and agreed to a plan to poison his successor and current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as part of an attempt coup to remain in power.

Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet formally charged Bolsonaro for attempting a coup to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat. He said that the plan also aimed at shooting dead Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a foe of the former president.

“The members of the criminal organization structured at the presidential palace a plan to attack institutions, aiming to bring down the system of the powers and the democratic order, which received the sinister name of ‘Green and Yellow Dagger,’” Gonet said in the report. “The plan was conceived and taken to the knowledge of the president, and he agreed to it.”

Gonet alleges that Bolsonaro and 33 others participated in plan to remain in power.

Last November, Federal Police filed a 884-page report with Gonet detailing the scheme. They allege it involved systematically sowing distrust of the electoral system among the populace, drafting a decree to give the plot a veneer of legality, pressuring top military brass to go along with the plan, and inciting a riot in the capital.

The Supreme Court will analyze the charges and, if accepted, Bolsonaro will stand trial.

The far-right leader denies wrongdoing. “I have no concerns about the accusations, zero,” Bolsonaro told journalists earlier on Tuesday during a visit to the Senate in Brasilia.

“Have you seen the coup decree, by any chance? You haven’t. Neither have I,” he added.

A lawyer for Bolsonaro did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As well as participating in a coup d’état, the 34 defendants are accused of participating in an armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, damage qualified by violence and serious threat against the state’s assets, and deterioration of listed heritage, according to a statement from the Prosecutor General’s press office.

“The organization was led by the then president of the Republic and his candidate for vice president. Together with other people, including civilians and military personnel, they tried to prevent the results of the 2022 presidential elections from being implemented,” the statement said.

US Air Force spy planes have recently conducted signals intelligence (SIGINT) operations along the US-Mexico border, while Green Berets from the US Army's 7th Special Forces Group have been deployed to a naval facility in Campeche—a Mexican port city on the Gulf of Mexico—for what's described as a "training mission." These developments offer a clearer picture of President Trump's emerging strategy to combat Mexican cartels, which have fueled a drug death catastrophe of 100,000 Americans per year. This approach aligns with Trump's designation of these cartels as "foreign terrorist organizations."

The CIA, operating under the Trump administration, has been secretly deploying unarmed (at the moment) General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper drones over regions of Mexico dominated by heavily armed drug cartels, according to a CNN report. The report comes from current and former officials with knowledge of ongoing national security operations, shedding light on what is happening under the cloak of darkness - in preparation to disrupt and dismantle drug cartels.

Some current and former officials say designating cartels as terrorist groups could potentially lay the groundwork for direct US strikes against the cartels and their drug labs in Mexico.

The CIA has flown surveillance drones to hunt cartels inside Mexico before, according to a former and a current US official, under at least one small program that partnered with Mexican authorities.

But the more recent flights were communicated to Congress by the Trump administration using a particular notification reserved for new or updated covert programs that the CIA intends either to conceal or deny, a source familiar with the matter said — suggesting that the flights represent a distinct escalation. The notifications made no mention of Mexican partners, the source said.

CIA spokesperson told the media outlet that "countering drug cartels in Mexico and regionally is a priority for CIA as a part of the Trump Administration's broader efforts to end the grave threat from narco-trafficking. Director [John] Ratcliffe is determined to put CIA's unique expertise to work against this multifaceted challenge."

This year’s Munich Security Conference attracted as much attention as it did 18 years ago. Back then, it was Vladimir Putin who caused an uproar; this time, it was US Vice President J.D. Vance. Though separated by nearly two decades, these two speeches share a critical theme: both challenged the transatlantic order built on the legacy of the Cold War. And in both instances, the Western establishment failed to offer a substantive response.

In 2007, Putin’s warning about NATO expansion and Western overreach was largely dismissed as the grievances of a declining power. A few voices urged caution, but the prevailing sentiment in Washington and Brussels was complacency — Russia, they believed, would ultimately fall in line. The consequences of that miscalculation are now plain for all to see.

Today, the US Vice President has thrown down a different kind of gauntlet. His speech signaled a deep ideological rift within the West itself, one that Western European leaders seem unprepared to confront. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an emergency summit to establish a common position. But is the EU truly grasping the scale of the challenge? The early reactions suggest not. There remains a hope, however misguided, that this storm can simply be waited out.

Retaliation, Ideology, and a Changing World Order

There are several explanations for Vance’s remarks in Munich. The most immediate is payback. Western European leaders have spent years openly disparaging Trump and his allies, assuming they could do so without consequence. Now that Trump is back, they are facing the reality that their words have not been forgotten.

But there is a deeper ideological divergence at play. In many ways, Vance’s critique of Europe echoes the grievances that led the settlers of the New World to break from the Old World centuries ago: tyranny, hypocrisy, and parasitism. He and others, like Elon Musk, are unapologetic about interfering in European affairs — something liberal ideologues have long justified in the name of promoting democracy. Now, the debate over what democracy truly means has expanded beyond the US to the entire transatlantic alliance. This ideological struggle will shape the West’s trajectory in the coming decades.

Two Men Arrested For Attempting To Launch Drugs Into A Federal Prison Using A Cannon

During what had to be one hell of a brainstorming session, a couple of men from Colorado came up with a plan to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs into a federal prison. They'd launch the items over a security fence with the use of a cannon.

The two were arrested by the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana following an investigation. According to a Facebook post by the sheriff's office, they were attempting to smuggle $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine into a prison.

The plan was to use the cannon, which uses compressed air, not gunpowder like the old-fashioned cannons, to launch the contraband over the security fence at the federal prison. The sheriff’s office stated that the cannon had a range of over 350 feet.

18-year-old Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz and 19-year-old Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, both of Greely, Colorado, were arrested for Attempting to Introduce Contraband into a Penal Institution and Attempting to Distribute Methamphetamine.

The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office added that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had assisted in the investigation because one of the men involved is allegedly in the country illegally. They have a detainer for Munoz.

Just a couple of guys trying to launch drugs into a prison with a cannon

It wasn’t clear in the social media post by law enforcement as to what stage of the plan the two were busted.

Were these two still in the process of acquiring the cannon in question? Did they already have the cannon and have their plan thwarted prior to using it? Were there test runs?

Did they head out, load it up with the tobacco and/or drugs, and get caught in the act? So many questions that we may never have answers to.

We'll always have the comfort of knowing that if you've seen it in a cartoon there’s a chance, even if it's a slight one, that someone is out there planning to attempt something similar.

Colorado: BLM Activist who Shot Disabled Veteran in the Head Released from Prison Early

Alamosa, Colorado: In a video recorded at the scene of the crime, Black Lives Matter activist, James Edward Marshall IV, appeared to shoot a disabled veteran, Danny Pruitt, in the head during an armed protester roadblock/ anti-police riot in 2020. Marshall, an Alamosa defense attorney, was originally arrested on charges including criminal attempt to commit murder, assault, reckless endangerment, felony menacing, criminal mischief, illegal discharge of a firearm, and prohibited use of weapons. But he was offered a ‘sweetheart’ plea deal by disgraced former Alamosa District Attorney Alonzo Payne and pleaded guilty to one charge of ‘tampering with a deceased body’ [the reason for this charge is unclear as Danny Pruitt survived the gunshot wound, but is disabled]. All of the violent charges were dropped.

A victims’ rights attorney said that allowing “James Marshall to plead guilty to abuse of a corpse disregards the fact that Mr. Pruitt is a living human being” and deprived Pruitt of his rights.

Marshall has has been released from prison after serving only roughly three years of his 11-year sentence and has reportedly moved to a halfway house. He was sentenced to state prison in December 2021.

The plea agreement ultimately led to the 2022 disbarment of District Attorney Alonzo Payne, who has alleged links to George Soros. DA Payne resigned from office due to violations against victims’ rights. He acknowledged that he he lacked the ability to manage complex cases.

Critics have suggested that Marshall could be tried in federal court.

Billionaire DOGE head Elon Musk said on X, formerly known as Twitter, he would ask President Donald Trump about a proposal for a “DOGE Dividend” that would give taxpayers a refund check of $5,000 funded by the savings from his Department of Government Efficiency.

James Fishback, CEO of investment firm Azoria and reportedly an outside adviser to DOGE, pitched the idea of “a tax refund check to be sent after the expiration of DOGE in July 2026 funded exclusively with a portion of the total savings delivered by DOGE” on social media on Friday, and continued posting about it Tuesday, tagging Musk in a tweet about the proposal.

The proposal calls for 20% of DOGE’s targeted $2 trillion in savings to be returned to “the ~79 million tax-paying households,” which Fishback said would result in about a $5,000 return per household.

Musk responded to Fishback’s proposal, saying he “will check with the president.”

After Musk’s response to Fishback gained traction, he responded to another tweet about the proposed dividend couching the commitment slightly, saying: “Obviously, the President is the Commander-in-Chief, so this is entirely up to him.”

“Honored that @ElonMusk has expressed interest in our DOGE Dividend proposal for President Trump,” Fishback said on X after Musk responded.

$55 billion. That’s how much DOGE estimates it has saved the U.S. as of Monday, according to doge.gov. The site says the savings are from a combination of “fraud detection/deletion, contract/lease cancellations, contract/lease renegotiations, asset sales, grant cancellations, workforce reductions, programmatic changes, and regulatory savings.”

DOGE has drawn widespread controversy and criticism as Musk—who has been unofficially leading the agency—and his team have been quickly working to reduce costs through cancelling grants and contracts and reducing the federal workforce. DOGE has received blowback for its seemingly unrestricted access to sensitive federal data across departments including the Treasury Department and Education Department. It’s not clear what authority DOGE has to be handling sensitive data, and the agency and Musk are facing a number of lawsuits seeking to answer that and restrict access. DOGE was created by executive order on Trump’s first day back in office last month, and the order declared its purpose was “to implement the President’s DOGE Agenda, by modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.”

Kansas became the latest state to ban gender care for minors Tuesday after the Republican-controlled Legislature overrode the Democratic governor's veto of the measure.

Kansas is the 27th state to ban or restrict such care. GOP lawmakers reversed Gov. Laura Kelly's veto less than a month after President Donald Trump issued an order barring federal support for gender-affirming care for youth under 19.

“I just held my 16-year-old daughter, and we cried while we watched them try to erase her existence,” Elise Flatland, a Kansas City-area mother of two transgender children, said in a text message after livestreams of the votes.

The new law is set to take effect this month, and critics have predicted that doctors or parents or both will file a state-court lawsuit challenging it.

Supporters of such bans argued that they protect vulnerable children from what they see as a “radical” ideology about gender and from making irreversible medical decisions too young.

“This is a fork in the road,” said Republican state Rep. Ron Bryce, a southeastern Kansas doctor who backed the ban. “This is who we are as a people, as a state.”

The Kansas law will prohibit puberty blockers, hormone therapies or surgery for a minor to transition away from their gender assigned at birth. State employees caring for children won’t be allowed to provide or encourage such treatment — or encourage social transitioning.

The votes to override Kelly's veto were 85-34 in the House and 31-9 in the Senate. Republicans hold supermajorities in both, and only one GOP lawmaker voted against overturning the veto.

Groups backing transgender rights immediately announced that they would provide financial assistance and other help to families seeking care for transgender youth outside Kansas.

@nytimes reporting a gas shortage is so severe that the government had to choose between using its dwindling gas supply to run the country's power plants or heat people's homes. It chose the latter, which means the country is not producing electricity.

The presidential compound has no lights. Food and medical production facilities are shut. Factories have ground to a halt.

Businesses, schools, universities, police stations, supermarkets and government offices are all shut. 17 electricity plants have been shut down.

One official is publicly calling the situation "catastrophic." A citizen who lives through both the 1979 revolution and the Iraq-Iran War says he's never experienced this level of chaos.

Given how dire this is, and the cascading nature of events when they get to this point, this is very likely to get much worse.

This is happening right at the moment the Islamic Republic underwent the biggest defeat it has suffered since the Islamic Republic was established.

Over the past 15 months, Israel not only destroyed its "Axis of Resistance," which saw its last piece crumble with the fall of Assad, but in its October strike on Iran, the IDF completely destroyed Iran's air defense system.

As serious as that was – and as much a challenge the incoming Trump administration represents – a domestic energy crisis of this level represents a threat to the regime that's orders of magnitude greater than either of these two external factors.

In recent months, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have taken control over much of the gas industry. The crisis unfolding now will be attributed to the IRGC at a time when its legitimacy has already been questioned.

What happens next is unknown. But it's unlikely that Iran can easily quell the storm. Biden, who has spent decades attempting to forge, and maintain, a nuclear deal with Iran is out. And coming in is a president who implemented a strategy of severe Iran sanctions called "Maximum Pressure" — and is reportedly now designing Maximum Pressure 2.0.

The Iranian regime is resourceful. But this feels different.

The body of Justice Antonin Scalia arrived at the Supreme Court to lie in repose inside the court's Great Hall to begin a day of public mourning. The flag-draped casket was carried up the steps by court police who served as pall bearers. Dozens of former clerks of the late justice who lined the court plaza served as honorary pall bearers. The current justices stood inside during the procession as the casket was placed on a catafalque used for the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln. A brief prayer service was led by the Reverend Paul Scalia, Justice Scalia's son.

YOU resisted ALL efforts to account for the spending ... for DECADES

YOU didn't pass a budget for more than 10 years.

YOU kept raising the debt ceiling ... year after year after year

YOU gave yourself the option to opt out of ObamaCare while FORCING us to get it under penalty of a yearly tax.

YOU have determined that YOU will get to live the rest of your life (even after you retire from Congress) off the taxpayer.

YOU think its totally fine to not even read the bills that you vote on.

YOU don't even show up to work a large percentage of the time.

YOU have benefitted from "insider trading".

YOU have awarded you family and friends massive government contracts.

YOU!

It is NOT the TAXPAYER that has accumulated the National debt ... it is YOU and ALL those who came before you.
