Judge Blocks NYC's Bid To Swiftly Recover $80.5 Million In FEMA Grant For Housing Illegals
In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rearden said the city failed to prove irreparable harm and could still recover the money if it succeeds in the lawsuit. The ruling came after a roughly two-hour hearing in Manhattan federal court.
On Feb. 4, city officials sued when the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and its overseer, the Department of Homeland Security, clawed back funds from a city bank account.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on Feb. 12 that she had pulled the FEMA funds, which had gone towards housing illegal immigrants in New York City hotels.
“FEMA was funding the Roosevelt Hotel that serves as a Tren de Aragua base of operations and was used to house Laken Riley’s killer,” she wrote in a post on the social platform X.
Laken Riley, then a 22-year-old nursing student, was murdered by Jose Antonio Ibarra in Georgia on Feb. 22, 2024. Ibarra had entered the country illegally from Venezuela in 2022.
On Feb. 12, Noem said the money represented “the full payment that FEMA deep state activists unilaterally gave to NYC migrant hotels.”
In response, the city described the clawback as a “money grab” that sidestepped Congress’ intent in appropriating the funds.
Its lawsuit called on Rearden to order the Trump administration to immediately return the $80.5 million and to stop taking similar actions.
FEMA originally gave New York City the money to offset the cost of housing illegal immigrants in city hotels after illegal immigration surged during the Biden administration.

Trump says he 'felt very comfortable' during address to Congress, touts positive coverage from 'fake news'
Trump, in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, said his first address to a joint session of Congress 'ended up well'
Brooke Singman Fox News
March 6, 2025 12:25pm EST
EXCLUSIVE: President Donald Trump reflected on his first address of his second administration to a joint session of Congress, telling Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that he "felt very comfortable there" and that "even the fake news said good things."
"I felt very comfortable there," Trump told Fox News Digital Thursday morning. "I was very comfortable with the subject matter."
"People liked the delivery," the president continued. "So, it all ended up well."
The president told Fox News Digital that he "got wonderful reviews."
"Even the fake news said good things," Trump told Fox News Digital.
The president spoke for about an hour and 40 minutes — the longest address a president has delivered before a joint session of Congress, according to the American Presidency Project at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
The president used his first address to a joint session of Congress to highlight the accomplishments of his administration thus far, using his infamous "art of the weave" technique to tie each section together.
The theme of the president’s speech was "the Renewal of the American Dream," focusing on border security, the economy, energy, the end of "woke" America, his plans for peace around the world and a strengthened military, and more.
"To my fellow citizens, America is back," Trump declared at the start of his Tuesday speech, prompting the audience to break into chants of "USA, USA, USA."
A CBS News poll found that a large majority of those who watched the president’s address approved of his speech. It reported 76% of Americans who watched Tuesday night approved of the speech.
A CNN poll also showed that at least 7 in 10 Americans who watched the speech said they had at least a "somewhat positive" reaction to the speech, with 44% saying they had a "very positive" reaction.
The New York Times also published a piece titled: "What Some Reluctant Trump Voters Thought of His Speech," featuring interviews with a number of Americans — some of whom said his address brought "confidence," "hope" and "empathy."
Meanwhile, the president’s address was interrupted by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who eventually was thrown out of the House Chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
The House of Representatives Thursday, in a bipartisan vote, censured Green, D-Texas, for repeatedly disrupting the president’s address.
"He should be censured," Trump told Fox News Digital.
"He should be forced to pass an IQ test because he is a low IQ individual and we don’t need low IQ individuals in Congress," Trump told Fox News Digital, further blasting Green as "a fool and a clown."
"Nobody takes him seriously," Trump told Fox News Digital. "He is an embarrassment to Congress but a much bigger embarrassment to the Democrats."
Green did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

UPDATE: No sign of active shooter or victims at Corry Station, Escambia Sheriff says
ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. - The Escambia County Sheriff's Office says Thursday afternoon there are currently no signs of an active shooter or victims at Corry Station.
The building was cleared and an investigation is ongoing. Deputies will be onboard until about 12:40 p.m.
This noon update comes after NAS Pensacola reported that law enforcement was responding to an active shooter situation.
Calls came in around 10:15 a.m. for reports of three gunshots at the installation on Chiefs Way off of Navy Boulevard. The sheriff's office said in its noon update that "we have no evidence" of gunshots.
In addition to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, other agencies in the massive law enforcement response included Pensacola Police Department, Navy Police, EMS, helicopters and more.
Corry Station and NAS Pensacola were put on lockdown and roads in the area were closed as law enforcement worked the scene.
In a noon update, NAS Pensacola said its Main Gate and West Gate are open to Department of Defense identification card holders. Public visitation to NAS Pensacola's areas of public interest is currently unavailable.
"The NAS Pensacola Corry Station Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Child Development Center (CDC) is unaffected by the situation," NAS Pensacola said in a noon update. "CDC representatives are contacting parents of children at the facility."

Hunter Biden cites financial woes in request for federal judge to dismiss laptop data case
Biden’s attorneys said he "has had difficulty in finding a new permanent place to live as well as finding it difficult to earn a living."
March 6, 2025, 2:32 AM GMT
By Gary Grumbach, Sarah Fitzpatrick and Zoë Richards
NBC NEWS
Hunter Biden asked a federal judge Wednesday to dismiss his lawsuit against an ex-Trump aide that centers on the publication of contents of a laptop attributed to the former president's son, saying his dwindling financial resources have made it difficult to proceed with litigation.
In documents filed in federal court in California, Biden's attorneys urged U.S. District Judge Hernan D. Vera to dismiss the 2023 lawsuit filed against Garrett Ziegler. They said Biden "has suffered a significant downturn in his income and has significant debt in the millions of dollars range.”
His financial troubles were made worse, Biden's attorneys said, after the wildfires in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles "upended" his life by making his rental home "unlivable for an extended period of time."
Biden "has had difficulty in finding a new permanent place to live as well as finding it difficult to earn a living,” they wrote, adding that he needs to direct his time and available resources to dealing with his relocation, the damage to his rental house and his family’s living expenses, “as opposed to this litigation.”
An attorney for Ziegler did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Biden's attorneys declined to comment on the court filing.
Biden sued Ziegler and the company he founded, Marco Polo, in September 2023, claiming they broke state and federal laws to create an online searchable database with 128,000 emails attributed to Biden.
The judge overseeing the case had rejected a motion to dismiss it by Ziegler, who was an aide to Trump’s trade adviser, Peter Navarro, from February 2019 to January 2021.
Ziegler referred to the lawsuit in comments last year as “completely frivolous.”
In September, the judge ordered Ziegler to pay roughly $18,000 for Biden’s legal fees.
Biden said in a related court filing Wednesday that he faces millions of dollars of debt and is “not in a position where I can borrow money.”
He said he had anticipated paid speaking engagements and appearances following feedback from his artwork and memoir, which his attorneys identified as his main source of income in previous years, "but that has not happened."
Detailing flagging profits from his art sales, Biden said that while he had sold 27 pieces for an average of roughly $54,500 in the two or three years leading up to the lawsuit, he had sold only one piece of art for $36,000 since then.
Biden also described a slump in book sales, saying he went from selling more than 3,100 copies of his book from April through September 2023, when the lawsuit was filed, to about 1,100 over the six-month period that followed.
NBC News has reported extensively on Biden’s financial troubles and efforts to secure additional income, including a legal defense fund that ultimately did not get off the ground.
Biden was found guilty on federal gun charges last year, and he pleaded guilty in a federal tax case. President Joe Biden pardoned him shortly before he was scheduled to be sentenced in the gun case in December.

DC Appellate Court Reverses DC Judge Berman-Jackson, President Trump Has Authority to Remove Special Counsel Dellinger
March 5, 2025 | Sundance
The DC federal appeals court has reversed a ruling by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued Saturday. The appeals court is confirming [pdf Decision Here] that President Donald Trump has the executive power to fire Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger.
Dellinger was fighting President Trump’s effort to reform the bureaucracy in DC and fire officials within the executive branch. Activist District Judge Berman Jackson (pictured above) was supporting Hampton Dellinger, saying President Trump could not fire him.The appeals court has lifted the lower court’s injunction that barred Trump from removing Hampton Dellinger.
This is a win for commonsense and also a big win for President Trump and the plenary power of the Executive. The President alone controls the executive office holders, and the courts have no constitutional authority to interfere in the executive branch determinations of staffing. The plenary and constitutional power of the presidency has been affirmed.
WASHINGTON – […] The two-page ruling Wednesday from three judges onthe D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals contained no detailed explanation. But it said lawyers for the Trump administration had met the legal standard to lift an injunction that U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued on Saturday.
[…]The ruling flips the momentum in the president’s favor ahead of an imminent Supreme Court battle over Trump’s power to unilaterally fire executive branch officialswho are protected by laws meant to preserve their independence.
Last month, the high court declined to rule immediately on a request by the Trump administration to allow Dellinger to be replaced, effectively giving Dellinger a reprieve. But thehigh court is expected to weigh in more substantively soonon the issue — whether in Dellinger’s case or in another case.
The administration is also appealing a judge’s decision to reinstate another Biden appointee Trump sought to fire: Cathy Harris, chair of the Merit Systems Protection Board, which handles employee grievances. Harris, like Dellinger, has been a key player in the brewing legal battle over the Trump administration’s mass firings of thousands of probationary government employees. (read more)

Mission Delta commanders highlight critical space capabilities at 2025 AFA Warfare Symposium
March 6, 2025
U.S. Space Force Mission Delta commanders took the stage in two separate panels at the 2025 Air and Space Forces Association Warfare Symposium discussing the future of missile warning systems and GPS modernization, both critical components of space superiority.
Col. Ernest Schmitt, Mission Delta 4 commander, participated in the session titled Missile Warning and Tracking for Next-Gen Threats.
He emphasized the increasing importance of missile warning systems in a rapidly evolving landscape.
“From my perspective as the operator, we’re focused on how we employ what we have today in the most effective way,” Schmitt said.
“We’re laser focused … and we’re going to do everything in our power to get the most capability we can.”
Schmitt also commented on the importance of allied and partner nation integration to missile warning and missile defense.
“We have allied mission partners that are integrated in our ops floors, who are a part of our crews that do the training and exercises that we expect of our U.S. personnel,” he said.
“We can’t thank them enough for how much they provide to the mission.”
With adversaries deploying more sophisticated and numerous missile threats, Schmitt reinforced the need for an advanced and resilient tracking system capable of handling simultaneous engagements.
Additionally, Col. Andrew Menschner, Mission Delta 31 commander, spoke in the PNT at a crossroads panel, underscoring the U.S. Space Force's commitment to providing reliable Position Navigation and Timing capabilities for both military and civilian users.
“PNT is absolutely vital to the modern way of life, and it is absolutely critical to global military operations,” Menschner said.
“It is critical to space superiority, and space superiority is the foundational requirement for the success of the joint force.”
Menschner detailed the ongoing modernization efforts that aim to maintain GPS as the "gold standard" in Positioning, Navigation, and Timing services worldwide and improving the resiliency of the constellation.
Menschner added, “we may look at the diversity of the constellation. Simply put, more vehicles using more PNT and more accuracy, and then we may look at new command and control strategies, all to get after that prevention of disruption.”
Beyond military applications, GPS serves as a foundational technology for numerous industries, including finance, transportation, telecommunications, and disaster response.
The symposium discussion highlighted how improvements in GPS will continue to support these critical sectors while enhancing national security.
Both commanders reiterated a shared message: space superiority is no longer just a supporting function but an essential component of joint force success.
Their discussions underscored the U.S. Space Force’s role in ensuring space-based capabilities remain resilient, adaptive, and ready to meet the challenges of an increasingly contested domain.

Trump sends shockwaves with plans to implement new travel ban on Muslim nations
President Donald Trump is considering implementing a new travel ban on Muslim nations in the coming weeks.
Reuters first reported that Trump is mulling a new order that would impact Afghans and Pakistanis.
It comes after Trump's ban during his first term that kept travelers from seven total Muslim nations from entering the United States, which the Supreme Court upheld.
The president said on the campaign trail that he would expand his travel ban to include people from Gaza in the wake of the Hamas terror attack on Israel.
Trump is expected to announce several new executive orders later this afternoon as he marches full steam ahead during his first 100 days.

House Censures Democrat Rep. Al Green for Disrupting Trump's Joint Address to Congress
https://www.newsmax.com/politics/house-censure-obstructing/2025/03/06/id/1201662/
Thursday, 06 March 2025 10:44 AM EST
The House on Thursday voted to censure an unrepentant Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, for disrupting President Donald Trump's address to Congress.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had Green removed from the chamber during the early moments of Trump’s speech Tuesday night. Green stood and shouted at Trump after the Republican president said the Nov. 5 election had delivered a governing mandate not seen for many decades.
“You have no mandate,” the Houston lawmaker said, shaking a cane and refusing an order from Johnson to “take your seat, sir!”
Republicans acted quickly to rebuke Green with a censure resolution that officially registers the House's deep disapproval of a member’s conduct. Once such a resolution is approved by majority vote, the member is asked to stand in the well of the House while the speaker or presiding officer reads the resolution.
The resolution against Green was approved in a mostly party-line vote of 224-198.
Rep. Dan Newhouse, the resolution's sponsor, said it was a “necessary, but difficult step.”
“This resolution is offered in all seriousness, something that I believe we must do in order to get us to the next level of conduct in this hallowed chamber,” said Newhouse, R-Wash.
It's the latest fallout of the boisterous behavior that has occurred during more recent presidential addresses to Congress. Outbursts from lawmakers have happened on bothsides of the political aisle.
Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., noted that Republicans were silent when members of their conference interrupted Democrat President Joe Biden's speech last year.
Some yelled “say her name” in reference to nursing student Laken Riley, as Biden spoke about immigration legislation that some lawmakers were working on. Riley was killed while running on the University of Georgia campus by a Venezuelan citizen who illegally entered the United States in 2022 and had been allowed to stay to pursue his immigration case.
“Nobody apologized for interrupting Joe Biden time and again,” McGovern said. “You talk about lack of decorum. Go back and look at the tapes, and there was silence from the other side.”
The censure resolution says Green's actions were a “breach of proper conduct” during a joint address and that his removal “after numerous disruptions.” Democrats tried to table it Wednesday, but that effort failed on a party-line vote.
Johnson tweeted before Thursday's vote that Green “disgraced the institution of Congress and the constituents he serves.”
“He deliberately violated House rules, and an expeditious vote of censure is an appropriate remedy,” Johnson said. “Any Democrat who is concerned about regaining the trust and respect of the American people should join House Republicans in this effort.”
Green, now serving his 11th term, offered no regrets Wednesday when he explained his actions. Before speaking in his own defense from the House floor, he walked up to the Republican side of the chamber and shook Newhouse's hand. Green said he did not blame Johnson or those who had escorted him out after his outburst.
“Friends, I would do it again,” Green said.
He explained his actions by saying Trump had indicated he had won a mandate from voters. But Green said Trump does not have a mandate to cut Medicaid, a program that many of his constituents rely on.
“This is a matter of principle. This is a matter of conscience,” Green said. “There are people suffering in this country because they don’t have health care.”
He concluded his remarks by saying, “on some issues that are matters of conscience, it is better to stand alone than not stand at all.”
Trump said last week about the state-federal healthcare program: “We’re not going to touch it.”

Wreckage of mystery drone found in Russian-held land
Mar 6, 2025
Fragments of an unidentified kamikaze drone have reportedly been discovered in Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine, according to images circulating on the social media platform Telegram.
The wreckage appears to resemble a Ukrainian loitering munition with an X-shaped wing configuration, similar in design to the Russian Lancet drone.
At this time, there is no official confirmation regarding the exact type of the drone.
However, according to a report from the Russian sources, the drone may be the “Bulava,” a loitering munition developed by the Ukrainian company DeViro.
The Bulava unmanned aerial system was reportedly designed at the request of the Ukrainian military for precision strikes against key Russian targets.
The kamikaze drone features an X-shaped tail assembly and is equipped with a warhead weighing 3.6 kg.
The most commonly used payload is a Ukrainian-made cumulative-thermobaric warhead designed to maximize impact on enemy positions.
According to specifications released by the developer, the Bulava has a total takeoff weight of 11.5 kg.
The drone is launched using a catapult system before transitioning to electric-powered flight, reaching a maximum speed of approximately 100 km/h.
While independent verification of the drone’s origin remains pending, the discovery of the wreckage suggests continued advancements in Ukraine’s use of loitering munitions in the ongoing conflict.

Biden’s final acts should be investigated – state attorney general
The former US president’s last executive orders may have been “unconstitutional” due to his cognitive decline, Missouri’s Andrew Bailey has said
The last executive orders and pardons issued by former US President Joe Biden could be “null and void” or even outright “unconstitutional,” Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has claimed. He has requested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) launch an investigation into Biden’s activities in his last months in office.
“Unelected staff” membersof the former president’s administrationcould have exploited his mental stateto promote what Bailey called “radical” policies without the president being fully aware, the attorney general argued in a letter to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz that he published on X.
“I am demanding the DOJ investigate whether President Biden’s cognitive decline allowed unelected staff to push through radical policy without his knowing approval,” Bailey wrote on Wednesday in a post accompanying the letter. “If true, these executive orders, pardons, and all other actions are unconstitutional and legally void,” he added.
Bailey pointed to what hecalled “the streak of extraordinary far-left orders purportedly issued by Biden” in the last monthsof his term. The list compiled by Bailey included Biden granting his son Hunter a retroactive blanket pardon after vowing not to do so, as well as making a “legally frivolous” claim that the Equal Rights Amendment was part of the US Constitution.
The amendment explicitly prohibiting sex discrimination was first introduced to Congress in 1923 and later reintroduced and approved by both the House and the Senate in the 1970s. However, an insufficient number of states ratified it before the deadline and the amendment was considered expired.
“There are profound reasons to suspect” that Biden was manipulatedby his staff, Bailey said, citing some former and current US officials, as well as a prominent Democratic fundraiser who had previously spoken about the former president’s cognitive issues.
According to the attorney general, House Speaker Mike Johnson recently said that Biden was unable to understand the orders he was signing and confused a moratorium on energy exports to Europe with a decree authorizing a study of those exports.
A major Democratic National Committee fundraiser,Lindy Li, stated last month that “the people who ran our country for the last four years” were Biden’s staff, as well as his wife and son Hunter.
The DOJ has not commented on Bailey’s request.
Questions about Biden’s physical and mental fortitude plagued his presidential campaign in 2024. He was eventually forced to drop out of the race under pressure from his own party a hundred days before the election following his poor performance at a CNN-hosted debate with Trump this past June.

I suspect there are a lot of investigations going on for Biden etc. already, there is so much to expose and prosecute.

Beretta promotes ‘game-changer’ in drone defense
Mar 6, 2025
Italian firearms manufacturer Beretta Defense Technologies has promoted its latest innovation in counter-drone defense: the M4 A.I. Drone Guardian shotgun.
Developed to address the growing threat of first-person view (FPV) drones in modern warfare, the shotgun offers a cost-effective and adaptable solution for security forces and military personnel.
As noted by the company, the M4 A.I. Drone Guardian was presented at major defense exhibitions, including SHOT Show, IDEX UAE, and Enforce Tac, where it received strong interest from industry professionals and security experts.
Mauro Della Costanza, Head of Defense & Law Enforcement Sales at Benelli Armi S.p.A. (part of Beretta Defense Technologies), highlighted the weapon’s effectiveness in a presentation video, describing it as a “game-changer” in counter-FPV drone defense.
Given the difficulty of neutralizing drones mid-flight, the modified M4 shotgun is designed for ease of use, enabling precise targeting within a range of 50 meters and beyond.
The weapon is based on Benelli’s proven short-stroke gas piston system with automatic gas regulation, a design that has been used successfully by military and law enforcement agencies for over two decades.
According to Benelli, the effective engagement range of the Drone Guardian is approximately 50 meters, with a maximum range of up to 100 meters.
The company states that the uniqueness of the AI-enhanced version lies in its modified choke, which ensures that shotgun pellets retain velocity and energy over greater distances, increasing effectiveness against aerial threats.
Unlike electronic jamming systems, the Drone Guardian provides a direct kinetic solution to counter drones, including those equipped with electronic countermeasures or autonomous navigation capabilities.
Additionally, shotguns are relatively inexpensive to acquire and maintain compared to more complex counter-drone technologies.
However, specialists acknowledge the limitations of using shotguns for drone defense.
The short engagement window and challenges in detecting and tracking fast-moving UAVs remain key obstacles.
Despite these challenges, shotguns have proven to be a useful complement to existing drone defense systems.
The 12-gauge shotgun is widely used by military forces for various applications.
Often regarded as a versatile tool rather than just a weapon, its range of ammunition types allows it to breach doors, disable light vehicles, or cover a broad area with shot dispersion.

EU and Brazil sign international agreement to fight organised crime and terrorism
The European Union (EU) and Brazil have signed an agreement that strengthens the partnership between Europol and Brazilian law enforcement, enabling the exchange of operational information. This milestone will bolster joint efforts in tackling serious organised crime and terrorism, reinforcing security on both sides of the Atlantic.
The agreement was signed today by Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, and the Minister of Justice and Public Security of Brazil, Ricardo Lewandowski, in the presence of Europol’s Executive Director, Catherine De Bolle.
Brazil has been a key partner for Europol since 2017, with a strong record of operational cooperation across various crime areas, including drug trafficking, cybercrime and human trafficking. This agreement will further strengthen law enforcement collaboration, helping to disrupt criminal networks and combat transnational crime more effectively.
Brazil is the first country in Latin America to sign such an agreement with the EU. The agreement is now subject to the European Parliament’s consent before its final implementation. Europol stands ready to support its full execution, further deepening operational engagement with Brazil in the fight against serious organised crime.
Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, said:
‘International cooperation is a cornerstone of our work to strengthen the internal security of the EU and our partners. This agreement will provide us with the opportunity to enhance information exchange with a key partner, Brazil, and in turn increase Europol's support to Member States' cross-border criminal investigations.’
Europol’s Executive Director, Catherine De Bolle, added:
‘This agreement marks a new chapter in our trusted partnership with Brazil. By strengthening our operational cooperation, we are enhancing our ability to tackle the most pressing security threats together. Europol remains committed to working hand in hand with the Brazilian authorities to combat serious and organised crime.’
Cooperation with non-EU countries is a crucial component of Europol’s strategy to fight serious and organised crime. By strengthening operational ties with trusted international partners, Europol enhances the ability of EU law enforcement authorities to tackle transnational threats. Agreements like the one signed with Brazil reinforce Europol’s global network, allowing for a more coordinated approach to combating criminal networks that operate across borders.

'Star Trek shield' technology gets $250M boost to knock drone swarms from the sky with high-powered microwave
March 6, 2025 8:55am EST
A new high-powered microwave system that can knock swarms of drones out of the sky at once is going to "touch every aspect of warfare," according to Epirus founder, Joe Lonsdale.
"It’s kind of like a Star Trek shield," Lonsdale, founder of Epirus and a co-founder of fast-rising defense technology company Palantir, explained of its Leonidas counter-drone system. "It’s able to turn them off from very far away."
"This is going to touch every aspect of warfare over the next decade," he told Fox News Digital. "We can knock down some pretty advanced drones."
Defense tech startup Epirus secured another $250 million in a Series D funding round, which was announced Wednesday, bringing its total venture funding to over $550 million.
Epirus’ Leonidas system is a ground-based, directed energy weapon that fires off an electromagnetic pulse to disable swarms of drones, or it can neutralize precision targets.
The company aims to help the military shift away from a "1 to 1 mindset to a ‘1 to many’ way of thinking for short-range defense," according to CEO Andy Lowery.
Drone swarms have been a key frontline tactic in the Russia-Ukraine war because most defense systems are designed to take out one unmanned vehicle at a time.
Additionally, in the Middle East, the U.S. has been using multimillion-dollar missiles to shoot down Houthi drones that are built for around $2,000 or less.
"Swarms of drones is where war is going, and currently you have swarms of drones that are very expensive and very difficult to stop," said Lonsdale.
"It's not just drones, they're all sorts of different types of uses for this," he added, predicting that one day the technology might be deployed to freeze up planes in the sky and protect satellites.
The technology has already been successful in Defense Department tests on boat motors and other electronics, according to the company.
"This is just it's just going to touch every aspect of warfare in the next decade."
Rep. Rob Wittman, vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee, warned that the U.S. needs to "run to play catchup" with its adversaries in the counter-UAS space.
"We are not doing what we need to do," he told Fox News Digital on the sidelines of the National Security Innovation Base Summit in Washington, D.C.
"We have failed miserably at counter-UAS. We do okay in CENTCOM [Central Command], but … in places like Langley Air Force Base, we are not where we need to be."
Dozens of drones hovered over Langley for over two weeks in 2023, and lawmakers say they still have not been provided with an explanation.
Epirus won a $66 million contract in 2023 to supply its Leonidas to the U.S. Army, and the technology is believed to be in the testing phase by Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, according to comments that Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George made to Congress last year.
The rapid rise of unmanned aerial vehicles in war has prompted a defensive race to develop systems to counter them, like high-energy lasers and high-power microwaves.
"We have a lot of people who are, you know, coming into the [Defense Department]wanting to embrace new technologies," said Lonsdale. "They’re really excited about this."
The defense entrepreneur suggested there is "tons of waste" in the Pentagon that could be repurposed for new technologies.
"There’s a ton of cronyism. We're seeing tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars you could pull out, depending [on] how aggressive you want to be.
And these should be put into cutting-edge technologies that actually deter enemies."
Epirus was valued at $1.35 billion when it raised $200 million in Series C funding, but the company did not disclose its valuation for this round.
The California-based company will use the new cash influx to expand into international and commercial markets and expand manufacturing in the U.S.
The company is also planning to open a new simulation center in Oklahoma to train soldiers in counter-drone warfare.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has found Maine to be in violation of Title IX protections of girls in school sports, Maine media outlets are reporting.
Late last month, the federal office announced it was investigating the Maine Department of Education’s refusal to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order barring transgender athletes from playing on girls’ teams.
“It is shameful that Governor Mills refuses to stand with women and girls. Her rejection of the anti-discrimination obligations that Maine voluntarily accepted when it agreed to receive federal taxpayer dollars is unlawful. OCR is still actively investigating Maine and one of its school administrative districts for apparent violations of federal law,” Acting Assistant Secretary Craig Trainor said on February 26.
Maine’s refusal to comply with the federal directive led to a public stand-off between President Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills, who on February 21 vowed “we’ll see you in court.”
On Wednesday and Thursday, Maine outlets cited a Bangor Daily News report that the federal government had ruled against the state after only a four day investigation.
At stake is an estimated $280 million in funds the federal government provides Maine schools, either through support for special education or direct grants to universities and technical schools. Gov. Mills’ has asserted that banning biological males who identify as females from girls’ sports would violate the Maine Human Rights Act.
More recently, however, Mills has said the question is “worthy of a debate.”
The next stage in that debate may well be seen in how Maine responds to the federal finding, whether funds are withheld, and what court actions may ensue.

“More recently, however, Mills has said the question is “worthy of a debate.”” The real “debate” needs to be about ending the term in office of Governess Mills before she costs the tax payers of our State $280,000,000.00. I do not speak any language beyond American English, however there was a phrase recently recorded in the Oval Office that might be part of the debate, “suka blyat”.

Commercial Drone Alliance Calls on Trump White House to Expedite Deregulation of Commercial Drone Operations
March 6, 2025
he Commercial Drone Alliance (CDA), an independent 501c6 non-profit organization led by key members of the commercial drone industry, urges the Trump administration to expedite the deregulation of the commercial drone industry through advancement of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) draft rule enabling commercial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, or drones) to operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).
In a letter sent to the White House Office of Management and Budget, the CDA emphasized that publishing the BVLOS rule is key to providing the regulatory certainty needed to accelerate commercial drone adoption, strengthen domestic drone manufacturers’ ability to scale and compete globally, and enhance national security.
The CDA appreciates the Trump Administration’s commitment to eliminating unnecessary and costly federal regulations.
Advancing the industry-supported BVLOS rule aligns with Executive Order (EO) 14192, Unleashing Prosperity Through Deregulation, by reducing administrative burdens, driving economic growth, and strengthening national security.
This includes providing wide-ranging benefits for the American people, strengthening the domestic industrial base, and improving airspace transparency nationwide.
“The time is ripe for President Trump to build on the successes of his first term and remove the bureaucratic red tape inhibiting drone technology in America,” urged Lisa Ellman, Executive Director of the Commercial Drone Alliance.
“The BVLOS rule will unleash growth by enabling drones to operate under a right-sized regulatory framework rather than relying on exemptions and waivers from existing regulations designed for legacy aircraft.”

The Golden Age of America has just begun! Over the past six weeks, our Administration has delivered on promises like no Administration before it, always putting America First! DOGE has been an incredible success, and now that we have my Cabinet in place, I have instructed the Secretaries and Leadership to work with DOGE on Cost Cutting measures and Staffing. As the Secretaries learn about, and understand, the people working for the various Departments, they can be very precise as to who will remain, and who will go. We say the “scalpel” rather than the “hatchet.” The combination of them, Elon, DOGE, and other great people will be able to do things at a historic level.
We just had a meeting with most of the Secretaries, Elon, and others, and it was a very positive one. It’s very important that we cut levels down to where they should be, but it’s also important to keep the best and most productive people. We’re going to have these meetings every two weeks until that aspect of this very necessary job is done. The relationships between everybody in that room are extraordinary. They all want to get to the exact same place, which is, simply, to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Over the weekend, the Trump administration told the University of Maine that it is discontinuing a $4.5 million award to the Maine Sea Grant Program.
There are 33 other similar Sea Grant programs in coastal and Great Lakes states around the country. Yet only Maine appears to have had its funding revoked. And the announcement came one week after Gov. Janet Mills sparred publicly with President Donald Trump at the White House about his executive order on transgender athletes.
The four-year federal award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration went into effect last February and would have awarded Maine Sea Grant roughly $4.5 million through January 2028, including about $1.5 million this year.
"It has been determined that the program activities proposed to be carried out in year 2 of the Maine Sea Grant Omnibus Award are no longer relevant to the focus of the administration’s priorities and program objectives," NOAA wrote in a letter to the University of Maine.
The program now appears to be in jeopardy, though both the UMaine system and its partners were still determining the specific impacts on Monday.
Federal and matching funds support the salaries of 20 people at the university and around the state. A spokesperson said Monday that the University of Maine system is still assessing how the funding cuts will directly impact staff and research projects underway.
Maine Sea Grant sponsors marine science and fisheries research initiatives around the state. Sebastian Belle, executive director of the Maine Aquaculture Association, said losing access to Maine Sea Grant shellfish, finfish and seaweed experts would be a "tremendous blow" to aquaculture businesses around the state.
"The costs to particularly the young farmers, the new start-up farmers, their costs would go up, because they would have to actually bear the costs of actually doing some of that research and learning that Sea Grant has been doing for them," he said.
Sea Grant experts have been instrumental in helping aquaculture farmers solve technical problems, Belle added. He called the Maine Sea Grant cuts "short-sighted" and said losing access to the program's expertise could stymy the long-term growth of the state's aquaculture sector.
In addition, Maine Sea Grant played a major role in launching the state's emerging scallop farming industry, helping new farmers learn techniques being used in other countries and apply them to their operations here, Belle said.
"Without Sea Grant's engagement in that particular part of our sector, we wouldn't have, number one, as many farms as we have, and we wouldn't have farms as advanced as they are," he said.
Ten years ago, Maine Sea Grant provided funds to help launch a collaborative research project with fishermen, students and others to study and sample lobster at different life stages.
Lobsterman Curt Brown leads that project and said it's still providing invaluable data about the fishery.

>Maine loses popular Sea Grant funding, 1 week after governor's public confrontation with Trump
"This is not a cost; this is not something you cut," said Brown, who's also a marine biologist for Ready Seafood. "This is an investment that has paid dividends for decades and will continue to pay dividends to Maine's coastal communities. And that's just so vitally important right now, especially right now. There's so much hinging on what happens right now, and we just can't afford to lose this vital resource."
Two former NOAA employees, including one fired last week by the Trump administration, told Maine Public and WBUR that Maine is the only state to have sea grant funding revoked, at least for now. Both said the program was slashed in retaliation after Mills' public confrontation with the president.
And Matt Charette, director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant in Massachusetts, said his organization is continuing to monitor the situation.
"As of now, there is no indication that any of the other 33 Sea Grant programs, including ours, are facing cuts similar to Maine Sea Grant," Charette said in a written statement to WCAI.
A spokesperson for NOAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Drone footage shows extent of major Arnhem fire; Situation now under control
Thursday, 6 March 2025 - 14:30
A devastating fire in the city center of Arnhem, Netherlands, has been brought under control, though it remains active in some areas.
Around 100 residents are being cared for as emergency services continue to manage the aftermath of the blaze, which has left a visible scar on the city’s historic center, drone footage shows.
The fire began early Thursday morning at 3:45 a.m. at a SoLow store on Jansstraat, near Korenmarkt, and quickly spread to surrounding buildings.
At least ten buildings, including shops and multiple residential units above them, have been severely damaged.
Firefighters are still working to extinguish the flames from the outside, as the risk of collapse has prevented them from entering at least ten of the affected structures.
By mid-morning, the fire department reported they had gained "more control" of the situation, using thermal imaging cameras mounted on drones to pinpoint areas still at risk.
Gas supply has been shut off to 75 buildings to help prevent the fire from spreading further.
Although no missing persons have been reported, authorities are continuing to assess the damage and confirm whether there are any casualties.
"While the fire is under control, we expect to be working throughout the day," said a spokesperson for the fire department.
"The damage, particularly to buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, is extensive. Some 25 homes and the shops below them are so badly damaged that they are no longer habitable."
To contain the fire, the fire department has started demolishing parts of the affected block to extinguish remaining fires and ensure no one is trapped inside.
Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire, but it is believed to have started in a party supply store. Authorities are still working to confirm the fire's origin.
As a result of the fire, approximately 150 shops and homes in the city center are without power. Businesses between Nieuwe Plein and Jansplein are closed for the day, and bus routes through the area have been altered.
It remains unclear when residents will be able to return to their homes, as many buildings will need to be assessed for stability before they can be deemed safe.
Around 60 to 80 residents were evacuated during the early stages of the fire. They have been relocated to the Arnhem city hall, where they are receiving assistance from emergency services and support from local victim assistance teams.
Mayor Ahmed Marcouch, who interrupted his vacation in Morocco to address the crisis, expressed his concern for the affected residents.
"The impact is significant, and my thoughts are with those who have been affected. I hope no one has been harmed in this disaster," he said in a statement.
"My heart bleeds for the heart of our city. Yesterday, there was already a fire, and now we are dealing with the destruction of our historic city center.
Around 100 people were evacuated because they couldn’t stay in their homes, and entrepreneurs couldn’t go to work. The impact is immense," the Mayor added.
Marcouch emphasized the hard work of the 150 firefighters, who worked throughout the night to combat the flames.
"I have so much admiration for Arnhem's resilience. Once the fire is fully contained, we will work tirelessly to restore the city. My thoughts are with those affected," he said.
Deputy Mayor Cathelijne Bouwkamp also expressed shock, adding that the city’s residents and businesses were struggling with the uncertainty. "It’s devastating for our historic city center and for the people who live and work here.
The shock is enormous," she said. "Many people are still unsure if they will be able to return home. The fire has left a trail of destruction, and we’re working to support everyone impacted by this tragedy."

British drone strikes terrorist in Syria with Hellfire missile
March 6, 2025
Royal Air Force aircraft continue to conduct armed reconnaissance patrols over Syria, providing ongoing support to the global fight against Daesh.
These operations, say the Ministry of Defence, remain crucial in countering terrorist threats, ensuring that identified targets can be engaged when necessary.
On Tuesday, 25 February, a remotely piloted RAF Reaper successfully tracked a known Daesh terrorist in the Aleppo Governorate of north-west Syria.
The Reaper crew, say the MOD, maintained close surveillance on the individual, assessing the situation to ensure minimal risk to civilians.
When the terrorist was observed alone on foot, presenting an opportunity for a precise strike, the Reaper engaged using its Hellfire missile system, successfully eliminating the target.
This latest strike underscores the RAF’s commitment to degrading Daesh’s operational capacity, as part of the UK’s wider efforts to ensure regional stability and security.
MQ-9A Reaper
The MQ-9A Reaper is a remotely piloted air system (RPAS) operated by the Royal Air Force’s 13 and 39 Squadrons, based at RAF Waddington.
Capable of long-endurance intelligence gathering and precision strikes, the Reaper is an essential asset in counterterrorism and reconnaissance missions.
It carries a variety of sensor systems, including electro-optical and infrared cameras, radar, and laser target designators, allowing for real-time battlefield awareness.
Armed with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and GBU-12 Paveway II bombs, it provides highly accurate, low-collateral damage strike capability. It’s being replaced by Protector.
Operation Shader
This mission was conducted under Operation Shader, the UK’s contribution to the Global Coalition against Daesh.
Since 2014, RAF aircraft, including Typhoon and Reaper drones, have played a vital role in supporting Iraqi and coalition forces, providing precision airstrikes, reconnaissance, and intelligence gathering to disrupt terrorist activities.
Despite Daesh’s territorial defeat, the group continues to pose a serious insurgent threat, necessitating ongoing UK and coalition operations to prevent its resurgence.

Advanced attack drones for Ukraine in new deal struck by UK government and Anduril UK
6 March 2025
Defence Secretary John Healey MP visited Anduril, the firm supplying the drones, in Washington D.C. ahead of a meeting with his US counterpart Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon today.
The deal follows a meeting of world leaders in London last week, when the Prime Minister and allies agreed it was essential that military support continues for Ukraine to put the country in the strongest possible position for peace as it continues to defend itself from Russian aggression.
The new contracts, totalling nearly £30 million and backed by the International Fund for Ukraine, will result in Anduril UK supplying cutting-edge Altius 600m and Altius 700m drones – known as loitering munitions – that are designed to monitor an area before striking targets that enter it.
The Defence Secretary visited Anduril yesterday, where he spoke with a number of American and British staff.
Founded in California, Anduril continues to invest significantly in the UK with a large footprint across the country and plans to rapidly scale, in line with the Government’s commitment to keeping the nation safe while providing highly skilled jobs.
Securing a lasting peace in Ukraine and strengthening bonds between NATO allies set to top the agenda when the Defence Secretary meets with his US counterpart today.
The visit follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer meeting the US President last week, and John Healey MP will hail the unparalleled depth of the UK’s special relationship with the US - the UK’s closest security ally – as both nations continue to collaborate to bolster security and support economic growth.
The meeting follows the recent decision by the UK Government to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by April 2027 – the biggest sustained uplift since the Cold War.
National security is a foundation of our Plan for Change, and the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary have said that Europe needs to take a greater responsibility for its security, and that defence can be an engine for economic growth.
Defence Secretary, John Healey MP, said:
We are determined to achieve a secure, lasting peace in Ukraine, which means putting Ukraine in the strongest possible position to prevent any return to Russian aggression.
The UK has already provided more than 10,000 drones to Ukraine’s Armed Forces, which have proved vital in disrupting Russian troop advances and targeting positions behind the frontline.

With a £2.26 billion loan from seized Russian assets, plus £1.6 billion worth of air defence missiles announced for Ukraine in the last week, the UK is continuing to show leadership in securing a lasting peace for Ukraine.
The work with Anduril UK been led by Defence Equipment & Support - the procurement arm of the MOD - on behalf of the UK-administered International Fund for Ukraine (IFU).
The fund now stands at more than £1.3 billion worth of pledges from 10 other countries, of which the UK has contributed £500 million.
Ukraine’s armed forces will take delivery of the drones, launchers and spare parts over the coming months.
Dr Rich Drake, MD of Anduril UK and Europe said:
Anduril UK is proud to partner with the UK Government, working hand in glove to deliver vital capabilities for the UK and its Allies.
Our focus on developing and deploying technology where and when it’s needed is at the core of everything we do - from the rapid delivery of Altius to Ukraine to the expansion of our presence here in the UK.
We look forward to strengthening our partnership with the Ministry of Defence to protect our nation and our allies.
In January, it was announced that 30,000 drones will be sent to Ukraine by the international Drone Capability Coalition, co-led by the UK and Latvia.
Since July 2024, the Government has provided over £5.26 billion in military aid and financial support to Ukraine, including a £3 billion annual military aid and a £2.26 billion loan for military spending.
The British and US Armed Forces operate in close alignment around the world, from the long-standing global coalition to combat Daesh in the Middle East to joint maritime security patrols in the Indo-Pacific.
The Defence Secretary’s visit to Washington D.C. comes as the UK receives the last of an order of 50 of the latest generation AH-64E attack helicopters for the British Army, the most advanced attack helicopter in the world.
The helicopter was handed over this week at the Boeing site in Arizona under a programme that supports more than 300 UK jobs, helping to grow the UK economy - underscoring defence as an engine for driving economic growth.
The visit also comes at the conclusion of the 50th occurrence of Exercise Red Flag in Nevada, a joint exercise with the UK, United States and Australia.
The training is designed to test equally matched air forces in a realistic combat scenario and involves more than 3,000 military personnel in high-intensity training, such as dogfighting, air-policing and practicing bombing runs, at Nellis Air Force Base.

Russia to Build Drone Factory in Belarus
March 6, 2025
Russia will build a drone production facility in neighboring Belarus to “ensure security” for its key ally, Belarusian state media reported Thursday.
Kremlin Deputy Chief of Staff Maxim Oreshkin proposed the project during a visit to Minsk, where Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko welcomed the idea.
“It’s very important that Belarus has its own [drone] production facilities, which would strengthen both its economy and national security,” Oreshkin was quoted as saying by the Belta news agency.
The plant is expected to produce up to 100,000 drones per year once fully operational. Moscow and Minsk will now discuss its location and other details, Oreshkin said, without providing a construction timeline.
Belta’s report did not specify whether the drones would have military applications. However, Oreshkin’s emphasis on security suggests potential defense uses.
Both Russia and Ukraine have relied heavily on drones in combat and long-range strikes. Lukashenko said Belarus was “ready” to build the factory. “We guarantee that you won’t build it in Russia the way we would here,” he said.
Belarus remains under U.S. and European sanctions for supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and cracking down on opposition. Russia used Belarusian territory as a staging ground for its February 2022 invasion.

Representative Chip Roy Wants to Shut Off Aid for Countries Refusing to Take Back Their Deported Citizens
House Republicans are pushing legislation to help the Trump administration punish foreign governments that refuse to accept their deported citizens.
The Deportation Compliance Act calls for penalties against any recalcitrant country, which are countries that refuse to take back citizens kicked out of the United States. If passed and signed into law, the U.S. would withhold all foreign assistance to any government that either outright refuses to accept their deportees or takes longer than six months to do so, according to text of the legislation shared exclusively with the Daily Caller News Foundation by its sponsor, Texas GOP Rep. Chip Roy.
“Countries that refuse to accept their own citizens deported from America for breaking our laws must face serious consequences,” Roy stated to the DCNF. “Their actions undermine our sovereignty and security. ”
“To the extent any foreign aid should exist — we should absolutely cut off the flow of cash to those ‘recalcitrant’ countries that refuse to comply with our deportation orders,” Roy continued. “America will not, and must not, tolerate the disrespect of our laws by any foreign government.”
Recalcitrant nations have long frustrated federal officials attempting to carry out immigration law. Rather than remain in U.S. detention indefinitely, many migrants hailing from recalcitrant countries are released back into American communities due to limitations in detention capacity.
The U.S. government identified 13 recalcitrant governments in July 2020: Bhutan, Burundi, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Laos, Pakistan and Russia. However, some foreign governments have gone back-and-forth on compliance over the years, and it has not always been easy obtaining an up-to-date tally of uncooperative countries.
Roy and a group of House Republicans sent a letter to the Biden administration in July 2024 requesting an updated list of recalcitrant countries, but the Texas Republican says the administration never responded.
Management of the Biden-era border crisis was made more difficult when Venezuela, the second-highest source of illegal immigration into the U.S., stopped accepting deportation flights in February 2024. Nearly 8 million Venezuelans have fled the country under Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a leftist authoritarian who has overseen rampant inflation, economic turmoil and political repression.
Upon being sworn into office for a second term, President Donald Trump immediately got to work on securing alternate destinations for deported migrants whose home governments may not be willing to take them back — a necessary endeavor in order to fulfill his goal of historic deportations.
The administration has since locked in deals with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and Costa Rica to serve as destinations or layovers for illegal migrants deported out of the U.S. A section of the Guantanamo Bay naval base has also been repurposed for migrant detention, with Trump suggesting as many as 30,000 criminal migrants could be sent there – something the Clinton administration similarly did with Haitian nationals during the 1990s.
In a major win for the White House, deportation flights touched down in Venezuela in early February. They were the first repatriation flights in roughly a year.
Trump has also used the threat of tariffs to force uncooperative leaders back in line.
When Colombian President Gustavo Petro in January openly declared he would refuse to take back his deported citizens, Trump immediately announced sweeping 25% taxes on all Colombian goods imported into the U.S. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio authorized visa suspensions against Colombian nationals and travel bans against officials involved in the blocking of the deportation flights. Roughly an hour after those retaliatory measures were rolled out, Petro announced he had reached a deal to begin accepting his deportees again.
Supporters of the Deportation Compliance Act argue the bill would codify another tool for the federal government to rein in uncooperative countries.
“Congressman Roy’s legislation will hold countries accountable who refuse to take deported nationals, some of which have entered America illegally and committed crimes here,” Michael Hough, director of federal government relations for NumbersUSA, said to the DCNF.

Royal Navy tests advanced military drone in Norway for operations in extreme environments
March 5, 2025
The Royal Navy of the United Kingdom is testing single-rotor Ghost UAS drones in Norway, in partnership with the Logistic Command Regiment (CLR).
The goal is to analyze the drones’ capabilities in route reconnaissance and identifying vulnerable points in extreme Arctic conditions, assisting Command units with navigation and operation planning.
The tested Ghost UAS belongs to the Ghost-X platform by Anduril Industries, an advanced version of the unmanned aircraft system.
It features a modular design, automated software for missions, and an improved propulsion system, allowing for 75 minutes of flight and carrying up to 9 kg.
Additionally, its 25 km range and optical and infrared sensors ensure effectiveness even without GPS.
The 700X Naval Air Squadron, which is leading these tests, plays an experimental role within the Royal Navy, focusing on drone innovation.
The introduction of the Ghost-X could enhance future operations of Command units, providing real-time intelligence and greater efficiency in challenging environments.

Trump administration agrees to renegotiate Maine Sea Grant funding
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, pressured the U.S. commerce secretary Tuesday, saying withdrawing the $4.5 million award that funds years of research would 'cause devastating harm' to the state's coastal communities.

The Trump administration has agreed torenegotiate funding for Maine Sea Grant, one of the state’s key coastal resource programs, following conversations between U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnik and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
The renegotiation would put funding back on the table so long asthe work supported by the program “focuses on advancing Maine’s coastal economies, working waterfronts and sustainable fisheries,” Collins’ office said in an emailed statement Wednesday afternoon.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Saturday that it was rescinding the $4.5 million award that supports marine science research, workforce development and education across the state for four years.

Maine Sea Grant in jeopardy after Trump administration terminates $4.5 million grant program
It’s unclear when the money would be restored and when projects could resume. Maine Sea Grant will need to reapply for funding, according to the statement.
“I appreciate the secretary’s willingness to work together to ensure that Maine Sea Grant can continue to conduct research, support a robust pipeline of skilled labor, and ensure that our coastal economies remain profitable hubs for fishermen, lobstermen and hospitality workers,” Collins said in the statement. “It is important that Maine Sea Grant can continue to provide valuable services for communities across the state for years to come.”
“Through these bilateral negotiations, the department will ensure that the American people, including hardworking Mainers like lobstermen and fishermen, receive the benefit of the bargain consistent with the administration’s priorities and continued relevance to program objectives,” Nancy Hann, NOAA’s deputy undersecretary for operations, wrote in a memorandum.
Hann said the negotiations will modify the requirements of Maine Sea Grant’s award. It is unclear how Maine Sea Grant’s current work and focus differs from the Trump administration’s priorities — and whether the organization will have to shift that work to fall in line.
The University of Maine System oversees Maine Sea Grant. The program supported 332 businesses and 565 jobs in 2023 and generated $23.5 million of economic activity on $1.5 million in funding that year — roughly $15 for every federal dollar invested, according to the organization.
The news of the funding termination sent shockwaves through Maine’s fisheries industry. Maine Sea Grant Director Gayle Zydlewski said the funding getting pulled was “devastating.”

>Trump administration agrees to renegotiate Maine Sea Grant funding
The Maine Lobstermen’s Association called Maine Sea Grant “an important partner” in “preserving our way of life.”
In a termination letter that was provided to the Press Herald, NOAA official Timothy Carrington wrote that the activities of Maine Sea Grant are “no longer relevant to the administration’s priorities and program objectives.”
But Collins said she explained to Lutnick how important Maine Sea Grant is to the state’s coastal communities and that losing the funding would “cause devastating harm.”
This was the first major cut to NOAA, and it is the first program under the University of Maine System that has lost all of the funding it needs for base operations. The loss of funding also comes two weeks after President Donald Trump threatened to cut Maine’s federal funding in the wake of a confrontation with Gov. Janet Mills over the state’s refusal to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports.

King, Pingree and Collins urge Trump administration to reinstate Maine Sea Grant funding
The Press Herald reached out to administrators from the 33 comparable programs in other states Tuesday and Wednesday. The 16 that have so far responded said they haven’t lost funding.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, and Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, asserted this week that the Trump administration decided to defund Maine Sea Grant as retaliation, noting that there did not appear to be any similar cuts at other Sea Grant programs.
On Wednesday, they said they were pleased that Lutnick is willing to reconsider the termination, but argued that the system should not have to reapply for “funding that was improperly taken away from them in the first place.”
“It is critical that the federal government honor its commitment to supporting research and development in coastal communities to ensure the future success and resilience of Maine’s marine economy and immediately restore the Maine Sea Grant’s full funding,” King and Pingree said in a written statement.
Collins, meanwhile, has also spoken with leadership at the University of Maine and the director of Maine Sea Grant.
University of Maine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy, in a written statement Wednesday night, said she was “deeply appreciative of Senator Collins’ leadership and relentless advocacy” for the program.
She said she looks forward to finding a mutually agreeable path forward and noted an “outpouring of support” since the weekend announcement.
Collins has also “exchanged text messages” with Trump adviser and billionaire Elon Musk, she told Politico yesterday. Collins wouldn’t say what the texts have been about, but said she has raised objections to some of the cuts and Musk’s role in the U.S. government.

EU state detains six people over alleged pro-Russia treason plot
The Romanian authorities claim the group sought to destabilize the constitutional order and withdraw Bucharest from NATO
The Romanian authorities have detained six people on charges of treason for allegedly trying to overthrow the government with the help of Russia. The development marks a dramatic escalation of tensions between Bucharest and Moscow after Russian diplomats were expelled from the country in connection with the case.
According to a unit called DIICOT that combats organized crime and Romania’s spy agency, the SRI, a group called Vlad the Impaler Command sought to destabilize the country’s constitutional order and withdraw it from NATO.
Vlad the Impaler was a medieval ruler of a region in present-day Romania, best known for his brutal military tactics and harsh punishment of enemies.
The group’s members, among whom is a 101-year-old retired general, “actively requested support from Russian Federation Embassy officials,” the SRI’s statement reads.
According to DIICOT, the “organized criminal group” recruited followers online and also published video materials.
On Wednesday, Bucharest expelled two Russian diplomats in connection with the case. Moscow has denied any involvement in Romania’s internal affairs and has vowed to retaliate for the expulsions.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called out Bucharest’s “obsession” with finding a “Russian trace” in its “internal political squabbles.” She also accused the Romanian leadership of Russophobia and a persistent pursuit of escalation.
Last year, Romania accused Russia of interfering in its presidential elections, after Calin Georgescu, a critic of NATO and the EU and an opponent of aiding Ukraine, secured an unexpected first round victory in the national presidential election. The vote was almost immediately annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court, which cited alleged irregularities in the funding of his campaign.
Last week, as Georgescu was about to file his candidacy to run again for election, he was arrested and indicted on six criminal charges, including alleged “voter bribery,” “promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies,” and incitement to actions against the constitutional order.
Georgescu has maintained his innocence and asked US President Donald Trump for help against what he described as a politically motivated campaign against him organized by the Romanian “deep state.”
Bloomberg reported in February that theTrump administration was pressuring Bucharest not to block Georgescu’s candidacy for the presidency ahead of the new election in May.
Key Trump ally and adviser Elon Musk condemned Georgescu’s arrest as “messed up.”
US Vice President J.D. Vance similarly criticized Romania while speaking at the Munich Security Conference in February, suggesting that certain “old entrenched interests” in the country were using “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to prevent a politician with “an alternative viewpoint” from coming to power.
(Most of the countries persecuted in the EU and Europe are pro-American, pro-freedom and pro-Trump, so the Stasi persecutes them, or tries to erase them. It’s not getting better over there, it’s getting much worse. Basically the Pro-Eu prior president of Romania lost to Georgescu, so they made up a Conspiracy theory that was ultimately revealed as leftists posting online. The EU has been interfering in any country that is not Pro EU. it should be easier now that NGO's are not being funded by America, but it's not. The US DOS leftists have worked with the EU and other forces to turn every freedom loving country, leftists. They've tried with Hungary, Slovkia, Romania and others. Pray for this man, their tactics in some cases have eliminated the potential leaders altogether.)
