Big news from Guantanamo Bay, in 2 tweets: The lawyer for the defendant in the USS Cole bombing case disclosed at the war court today that there's an offer to plead guilty to avoid a death-penalty trial.
The Saudi prisoner agreed to the settlement to avoid a death-penalty trial, his lawyer said, but it has yet to reach the defense secretary.

Trump’s DOJ fired Adam Cohen, the head of the department’s drug trafficking and organized crime unit, in a brutal two-sentence memo.
“The Justice Department on Thursday sent out a memo referencing Cohen’s task force, saying it would combine the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces with the Project Safe Neighborhoods Program. Together, the new entity would be called Operation Take Back America,” The Hill reported.
Adam Cohen said “it was a shock” to receive a two-sentence memo informing him that he had been terminated.
The memo was reportedly signed last week by Acting DAG Emil Bove.
“Less than 24 hours ago, I received a two-sentence memorandum addressed to me from the Deputy Attorney General (DAG). It stated that I had been removed from my Senior Executive Service position and that pursuant to Article II of the Constitution, my employment with the U.S. Department of Justice was terminated,” Adam Cohen wrote on LinkedIn.

Breaking — Washington state Attorney General Nick Brown filed a lawsuit on Monday against Adams County for assisting ICE.
Adams County has been informing ICE when a criminal alien charged with a crime is scheduled to be released from jail so ICE can take them into federal custody.
The lawsuit accuses Adams County of violating the Keep Washington Working Act (sanctuary state statute), which prohibits jails and local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE detainers and other immigration-related matters.

The U.S. military is canceling more than 90 studies, including some that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed as climate change garbage..
Military and intelligence officials have over the past decade identified potential security threats from climate change that include natural disasters in densely populated coastal areas and damage to American military bases worldwide.
"The (Department of Defense) does not do climate change crap," Hegseth posted on X on Sunday. Hegseth took office in President Donald Trump's new administration on January 25.
An official Pentagon account then reposted a screenshot of a story quoting Hegseth using the word and added: "Fact check true."
The Pentagon said in a separate statement that it would be scrapping 91 social science-related studies on topics ranging from global migration patterns and climate change impact to social trends and would save $30 million in a year.
It listed as canceled studies including "Social and Institutional Determinants of Vulnerability and Resilience to Climate Hazards in the African Sahel" and "Food Fights: War Narratives and Identity Reproduction in Evolving Conflicts."
A Pentagon study in 2018 found that nearly half of all U.S. military sites were threatened by weather linked to climate change.
During the previous administration, led by President Joe Biden, the Pentagon had said it would include the risk of climate change in military simulations and war games. Trump has taken a different stand.
Last week, his administration withdrew from the board of the U.N.'s climate damage fund dedicated to helping poor and vulnerable countries cope with climate change-fueled disasters. The withdrawal is one of many steps taken by Trump's administration to pull back from multilateral initiatives.

Federal bank regulatory agencies today reported in the 2024 Shared National Credit (SNC) report that credit risk associated with large, syndicated bank loans remains moderate. However, the agencies noted weakened credit quality trends continue due to the pressure of higher interest rates on leveraged borrowers and compressed operating margins in some industry sectors.
The agencies also noted that the magnitude and direction of risk in 2025 is likely to be impacted by borrowers' ability to manage interest expenses, real estate conditions, and other macroeconomic factors.

The Functional Government Initiative and the Center for Renewing America identify at least a trillion dollars’ worth of divisive, identity-based programs and policies among the federal thicket and make suggestions that could ensure they don’t come back.
(Washington, DC) – On his first day back in office, President Trump issued an executive order to eliminate “radical and wasteful” Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) “programs and preferences” from the federal government. The Biden administration embraced this “woke” agenda and embedded it across the executive branch. Ensuring these programs do not make a comeback will take a sustained effort.
To help the administration in this task, and to help educate the public on the scope of the problem, the Functional Government Initiative (FGI) and the Center for Renewing America (CRA) have published DEI Spending in the Biden Administration. This report traces the Biden administration’s web of DEI programs and influence throughout the government, provides numbers on how much money these programs and initiatives wasted, and offers options for Congress to consider that could root out DEI ideology permanently.
A crucial guide to uncovering the myriad DEI expenditures, both small and large, were the “Equity Action Plans” (EAPs) that President Biden demanded across the government. The Biden administration claimed that these plans were designed to identify and remove barriers keeping federal resources from “marginalized” or “underserved” communities, particularly in areas like procurement, contracting, and grant opportunities. In reality, the systemic focus on DEI poisoned federal governance, contributing to the substantial increase in related spending and diverting resources toward controversial policies, away from agency missions. The Biden administration forcibly inserted the language of DEI into every corner of the executive branch.

A medical test used to detect cancer may actually be contributing to the disease, research suggests.
Computerized tomography (CT) scans use X-rays to create detailed images of the body and are used to diagnose and monitor diseases like cancer and bone injuries, as well as to assist in surgeries and evaluate efficacy of certain treatments.
However, there is little to no regulation of the scanners and radiation levels emitted can vary widely machine to machine.
In 2009, researchers estimated high doses of radiation from CT scans were responsible for two percent of all cancers (or roughly 30,000 per year).
And ongoing research indicates as the number of CT scans increases, related cancers will likely rise.
CT scans can be life-saving tests, catching disease or bleeding early enough to be treated.
However, experts say they are sometimes overprescribed and performed unnecessarily, potentially because of the money-making opportunities for the hospitals, as the tests are very expensive, or out of doctors' fears of missing a diagnosis and being sued.

International Law’s Fight for Relevance
International law is fighting for relevance. The outcome of this fight is likely to change the entire global political dynamic, which was shaped by World War II and sustained through the selective interpretation of the law by dominant countries.
In principle, international law should have always been relevant, if not paramount, in governing the relationships among all countries, large and small, to resolve conflicts before they turn into outright wars. It should also have worked to prevent a return to an era of exploitation that allowed Western colonialism to practically enslave the Global South for hundreds of years.
Unfortunately, international law, which was in theory supposed to reflect global consensus, was hardly dedicated to peace or genuinely invested in the decolonization of the South.
From the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan to the war on Libya and numerous other examples, past and present, the U.N. was often used as a platform for the strong to impose their will on the weak. And whenever smaller countries collectively fought back, as the U.N. General Assembly often does, those with veto power, military and economic leverage used their advantage to coerce the rest based on the maxim, “might makes right.”
It should therefore hardly be a surprise to see many intellectuals and politicians in the Global South arguing that, aside from paying lip service to peace, human rights and justice, international law has always been irrelevant.
This irrelevance was put on full display through 15 months of a relentless Israeli genocidal war on Gaza that killed and wounded over 160,000 people, a number that, according to several credible medical journals and studies, is expected to dramatically rise.
Yet, when the International Court of Justice (ICJ) opened an investigation of plausible genocide in Gaza on Jan. 26, 2024, followed by a decisive ruling later that year on July 19 regarding the illegality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, the international system began showing a pulse, however faint.
The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity and war crimes were another proof that West-centered legal institutions are capable of change.

New letter reveals Biden administration didn’t fully comply with requests involcing Democrat online fundraising platform
The Biden administration failed to fully comply with a demand to allow Congress to review Suspicious Activity Reports involving the massive Democrat online fundraising platform ActBlue, prompting a fresh request Monday to the Trump Treasury Department, according to correspondence obtained by Just the News.
House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., made the joint request to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant seeking access to the SARs, which are required by federal law when banks suspect money laundering or other suspicious activity.
The committees first sought the reports last fall, and Comer has said government officials told them there are hundreds of such reports.
In their new letter, the chairmen revealed the Biden Treasury Department only let Congress see some of the reports.
“Although the Biden Administration initially stalled the Committees’ requests in its entirety for months, on January 2, 2025, Treasury allowed the Committees to review only limited documents,” they wrote Bessant. “We write to request Treasury, in its commitment to transparency and cooperation, provide both Committees with the remaining records relevant to our investigations.”

Congress along with numerous state attorneys generals began investigating ActBlue last election, citing concerns the massive fundraising online platform, which claims to have raised $2 billion for Democrats and liberal causes over the last two decades, had not until recently used security tools like the CVV number on the back of credit cards to ensure donor identities.

The lawmakers told Bessant they were concerned that loose security might have led to abuses on the platform, including the flow of prohibited foreign monies into U.S. elections.
“Our Committees are concerned that the failure to properly vet contributions made through online platforms may allow bad actors, including foreign nationals not lawfully admitted for permanent residence or individuals attempting to evade individual contribution limits, to more easily commit fraud to illegally exploit and violate federal campaign finance laws,” they wrote.
For emphasis, they added the committees want to “guard against illicit foreign influence or other illegal activities in U.S. elections.”
In a recent interview with the Just the News, No Noise television show, Comer indicated the “small fraction” of documents the committees was shown by the Biden Treasury Department only heightened lawmakers’ concerns and determination to get access to all records.
“I think you are going to have a lot to report on ActBlue in the coming weeks,“ Comer said. Asked whether there is a foreign trail of money, he responded: “Absolutely.”
Back in December, Steil told the Just the News, No Noise television show that Congress likely will refer ActBlue to the Trump Justice Department for possible investigation.
“Once Pam Bondi comes in as attorney general under the Trump administration, we then have a partner at the United States Department of Justice to look at this, to do the investigation into bad actors, and to hold anyone who is engaged in this activity accountable,” he said.
