Poland suspends right to asylum at Belarus border

Poland’s government has issued an order suspending the right to claim asylum by people who cross the border from Belarus, making immediate use of a new law that was signed by the president yesterday.

That legislation has been criticised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Poland’s own commissioner for human rights as a violation of European and international law, which requires countries to accept asylum claims.

A regulation published in the official Journal of Laws on Wednesday night, and entering into force immediately, suspended the right to submit claims for international protection on the entire border with Belarus for a period of 60 days.

That is the maximum length of time allowed under the new law. If the government wishes to extend the ban for longer, it must seek the approval of parliament. However, it is very likely to be able to do so given that MPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of the new law.

“The regulation gives border guard officers a key tool to combat illegal migration, which is an element of hybrid aggression against Poland, and to combat international crime,” said interior minister Tomasz Siemoniak. “We are working to ensure the security of our border.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s office declared that the measures will “prevent the destabilisation of the internal situation on the territory of Poland”.

It noted that “for several years, Belarus has been conducting an organised operation aimed at disrupting public order in our country, but also in other EU countries”, by encouraging and assisting migrants and asylum seekers – mainly from the Middle East, Asia and Africa – to cross the border.

“In March 2025, there was a sharp increase in the number of attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border,” added the prime minister’s office. “In the coming months, a further significant increase is likely. There is also still aggressive behaviour by foreigners, who pose a risk to the lives and health of Polish officers.”

Last year, in response to a record number of asylum claims, Tusk announced a tough new migration strategy,including allowing the temporary and partial suspension of the right to claim asylum.

He argued this was necessary because existing asylum rules were not designed to accommodate the deliberate instrumentalisation ofmigration by hostile states, with many of those crossing the border and claiming asylum not being genuine refugees.

The government also believes that by banning asylum claims – along with other tough measures it has introduced at the border –it can discourage people from making use of the services of the people smugglers who offer to get them into the European Union.

However, human rights groups have declared that the measures would violate not only international law but Poland’s own constitution. They also say they will cause real harm tovulnerableasylum seekers, who will face being pushed back over the border into Belarus.

Well over 100 people are believed to have died around the borders between Belarus and EU member states since the beginning of the crisis in 2021.

Poland’s government notes that the law makes exceptions for vulnerable people. Even when the asylum suspension is in place,Poland must still accept claims from minors, pregnant women, people who require special healthcareand those deemed at “real risk of harm” if returned over the border.

A last-minute amendment added to the bill by parliament also allows an entire group that includes minors – such as a family – to submit an asylum claim. In the original draft, only the minors would have been allowed to do.

Why is the Moon so dusty? On Earth, rocks are weathered by wind and water, creating soil and sand. On the Moon, eons of constant micrometeorite bombardment have blasted away at the rocky surface creating a layer of powdery lunar soil or regolith. For the Apollo astronauts and their equipment, the pervasive, fine, gritty dust was definitely a problem. On the lunar surface in December 1972, Apollo 17 astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan needed to repair one of their rover's fenders in an effort to keep the rooster tails of dust away from themselves and their gear. This picture reveals the wheel and fender of their dust covered rover along with the ingenious application of spare maps, clamps, and a grey strip of "duct tape".

A giant mobile crane sank in a bog during military exercises near Belarus

The Lithuanian military has called for specialized equipment to lift a sunken US military vehicle, whose four crew members have been classified as missing, following a training incident in a swamp near the country’s border with Belarus on Tuesday.

The M88 Hercules armored vehicle, designed for recovering other military assets and weighing over 60 tons, was located on Wednesday in a bog near Pabrade, where the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division was participating in a joint NATO exercise, according to US Army Europe and Africa command.

Recovery efforts have proven unsuccessful. Rescuers have yet to access the submerged vehicle due to the challenging terrain. The Lithuanian Defense Ministry announced on Friday morning that the country’s most powerful dredger is en route to the site.

”We just need to stop the flow of water from the lake into the swamp so that the mud can be pumped out of the swamp,” Lieutenant Colonel Ausrius Buikus, who is leading the rescue operation, told media on Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte extended condolences to the families of the missing US soldiers, who are still declared ‘missing’. His office later issued an apology for “confusion” arising from his implication the crew was deceased.

The US has approximately 1,000 troops in Lithuania. Washington has increased exercises in the Baltic states amid rising tensions with Russia, particularly since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, touting the drills as a NATO confidence-building measure.

At least six people have died and nine have been injured after a tourist submarine sank off the Egyptian coast.

According to the Associated Press, six people were killed after a submarine carrying 45 Russian tourists sank off the beaches in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, with 29 people being rescued.

The submarine belonged to the Sindbad Hotel in Hurghada. At around 10 a.m. on Thursday, it embarked on a regularly planned tour of coral reefs, sinking about a half mile off the beach.

The Russian consulate said that the people rescued were taken to local hospitals and are in stable condition.

The cause of the submarine’s plunge is not yet known.

Chilling video captures the terrifying moments before a tourist submarine, filled with eager families, began to sink, inciting screams and panic among those on board.

Tragically, in the moments following this footage, six individuals - including two young children - lost their lives, while many others fought for survival as the semi-submersible Sindbad vessel sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt.

The nightmare unfolded as 45 tourists were gearing up for an underwater excursion to marvel at the Red Sea's renowned coral reefs, an area that US ships have been warned to avoid after a threat from Yemeni Houthis.

According to survivors, the submarine started its descent just as passengers were boarding.

Others speculate that a technical malfunction occurred, causing the boat to fill with water as it submerged for the first time with people inside, with the heartbreaking incident coming just under two years after the Ocean Gate tragedy.

The video reveals the pleasure submarine sinking, its hatches wide open, taking on water even as some tourists remain on deck.

Panic ensues, with one father recognizing the imminent danger and handing his children to safety on the pier before returning to assist others.

Harrowing accounts of the Hurghada tourist submarine disaster have since surfaced.

One tourist, Regina, who was accompanied by her two children aged nine and ten, shared: "We were saved by the fact that we were on the top of the submarine, we did not have time to go inside.

We were queuing at the boarding, when the submarine began to sink into the water.

"The Egyptian who was responsible for loading shouted 'Stop, stop!'. But naturally no one inside heard him.

He shouted to us 'Faster, faster, go to the pontoon' from which people were boarding." We were in line for boarding when the submarine started to submerge. The Egyptian in charge of loading yelled 'Stop, stop.'

"But of course, no one inside could hear him. He urged us 'Faster, faster, go to the pontoon' where people were getting on board."

Speaking to Baza media outlet, she recounted: "We hurried the children out. I realized that I wouldn't be able to climb onto the pontoon myself. I tried to swim away from the submarine. I was scared that the currents would pull me under it.

"We were saved by the fact that we were on the top of the submarine, we did not have time to go inside. We were queuing at the boarding, when the submarine began to sink into the water.

I swam away and perched on the structures built around the pontoon for mooring. From there, I managed to get onto the pontoon itself.

"This is undoubtedly a massive tragedy. It's hard to articulate how challenging this situation was. There wasn't a single life preserver, no lifebuoys, no vests, nothing at all on the pontoon itself. Rescue boats started to arrive.

"The submarine didn't completely sink, it just submerged while people were still boarding, and the hatches weren't secured. In other words, the entire tragedy occurred due to, in my view, one person's mistake who initiated the descent without ensuring everyone

"And there were no [organised] rescue operations from the Egyptian services. These boats delivered the victims to the shore directly to the rescuers, to the ambulances.

"When we were on the boat that brought all the rescued [tourists] to the shore, there really were doctors there, offering help. They took us there in a car to our hotel, fortunately it was located right next door, our hotel.`"

Another eyewitness shared: "A Russian father realised in time what was happening. He threw the kids on the pier and started helping the other people get out with another man.

"As you can see in the video, the boat started going down when not all the people had gone in yet, and it ended up going under water in a split second."

Dr. Kristina Valliulina, 39, a mother of two and pediatrician who was initially reported dead by the Egyptian authorities, survived the submarine disaster along with her two daughters.

Partial Solar Eclipse

On March 29, 2025, the Moon will pass in front of and partially block the Sun, casting a shadow on parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

The central part of the Moon’s shadow, where the Sun would appear completely blocked, misses Earth, so no one will be able to see a total solar eclipse this time.

Viewers will see a partial solar eclipse in sections of North America, Europe, Africa, northern Asia, small parts of South America, throughout Greenland and Iceland, as well as much of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

Cygnus Departs Station After Release from Robotic Arm

At 6:55 a.m. EDT, the S.S. Richard “Dick” Scobee Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft was released from the Canadarm2 robotic arm, which earlier detached Cygnus from the Earth-facing port of the International Space Station’s Unity module.

At the time of release, the station was flying about 260 miles over the Pacific Ocean.

The Cygnus spacecraft successfully departed the space station more than seven and a half months after arriving at the microgravity laboratory to deliver about 8,200 pounds of supplies, scientific investigations, commercial products, hardware, and other cargo for NASA.

Following a deorbit engine firing on Sunday, March 30, Cygnus will begin a planned destructive re-entry, in which the spacecraft – filled with trash packed by the station crew – will safely burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

Cygnus arrived at the space station Aug. 6, 2024, following a launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

It was the company’s 21st commercial resupply services mission to the space station for NASA. The spacecraft is named the S.S. Richard “Dick” Scobee in honor of the former NASA astronaut.

Hubble Spots a Chance Alignment

The subject of today’s NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image is the stunning spiral galaxy NGC 5530.

This galaxy is situated 40 million light-years away in the constellation Lupus, the Wolf, and classified as a ‘flocculent’ spiral, meaning its spiral arms are patchy and indistinct.

While some galaxies have extraordinarily bright centers that host a feasting supermassive black hole, the bright source near the center of NGC 5530 is not an active black hole but a star within our own galaxy, only 10,000 light-years from Earth.

This chance alignment gives the appearance that the star is at the dense heart of NGC 5530.

If you pointed a backyard telescope at NGC 5530 on the evening of September 13, 2007, you would have seen another bright point of light adorning the galaxy.

That night, Australian amateur astronomer Robert Evans discovered a supernova, named SN 2007IT, by comparing NGC 5530’s appearance through the telescope to a reference photo of the galaxy.

While it’s remarkable to discover even one supernova using this painstaking method, Evans has in fact discovered more than 40 supernovae this way!

This particular discovery was truly serendipitous: it’s likely that the light from the supernova completed its 40-million-year journey to Earth just days before Evans spotted the explosion.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has ruled out the participation of her country’s troops in a military force that the UK and France want to be deployed to Ukraine in the event that a peace deal with Russia is reached.

In early March, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron said that their nations were ready to lead a “coalition of the willing” pro-Ukrainian European countries to support Kiev with troops and aircraft.

The announcement followed the launch of bilateral talks between Moscow and Washington to settle the ongoing conflict, to which the EU and UK were not invited.

After a summit of Kiev’s backers in Paris on Thursday, which wasattended by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, Meloni reiterated that“no national participationin a possible military force on the ground is planned” by the authorities in Rome.

According to a statement published by the Italian prime minister’s office, she also “stressed the importance of continuing to work with the USto stop the conflict and achieve peace” between Moscow and Kiev. She “hoped for the involvement of an American delegation at the next coordination meeting” of Ukraine’s European allies, the statement read.

In her interview with the Financial Times on Friday, Meloni stressed thatit is “childish” to make Italy choose between the US and the EU.

Instead of deploying what London and Paris now call a “reassurance force” to aid Kiev, sheproposed extending NATO’s mutual defense clause to Ukrainewithout actually making the country a member of the US-led bloc. Doing so would be “easier and more effective than the other ideas that are on the table,” she insisted.(she misses the point of no NATO)

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic also said on Thursday that his country “will not be involved in Ukraine in any form.”Zagreb will not join the peacekeeping force because “the necessary conditions are simply not met– there is no peace agreement, nor the consent of the other side, which in this case is Russia,” he explained.

Russia has categorically ruled out the possibility of NATO-aligned European troops deploying to the conflict zone. It accused France and Britain of hatching plans for “military intervention in Ukraine,” which could lead to a direct military clash between Russia and the bloc. Moscow also suggested that London and Paris are deliberately escalating tensions in order to undermine efforts by the US and Russia to resolve the conflict.

Estonian officials are concerned about their national security due to a significant reduction in British troops and tanks deployed as part of NATO’s contingent in the Baltic nation, The Times reported on Wednesday. The drawdown also raises questions about Britain’s ability to send “peacekeepers” to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, according to the outlet.

Riho Terras, former commander of the Estonian Defense Forces and now MEP, told Times Radio that theUK appears unable to provide the brigade-sized force, typically around 3,000 to 5,000 troops, it had pledged.

“The UK has difficulties to put together one brigade to participate in operations. I see it in Estonia every day,” Terras said.

He warned that the British military’s financial struggles were becoming visible on the ground, citing theUK’s likely inability to fully participate in Exercise Hedgehog – one of NATO’s largest training operations in the region– this coming May.

“The UK is not coming with the full power to the exercises becausethey have problems with the financing,” Terras said, adding “Of course it concerns me that we are not taking seriously our defence.”

NEO Surveyor Instrument Enclosure Inside Historic Chamber A

The instrument enclosure of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Surveyor is prepared for critical environmental tests inside the historic Chamber A at the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston in December 2024.

Wrapped in silver thermal blanketing, the 12-foot-long (3.7-meter-long) angular structure was subjected to the frigid, airless conditions that the spacecraft will experience when in deep space.

The cavernous thermal-vacuum test facility is famous for testing the Apollo spacecraft that traveled to the Moon in the 1960s and ’70s.

The instrument enclosure is designed to protect the spacecraft’s infrared telescope while also removing heat from it during operations.

After environmental testing was completed, the enclosure returned to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California for further work, after which it will ship to the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) in Logan, Utah, and be joined to the telescope.

Both the instrument enclosure and telescope were assembled at JPL.

As NASA’s first space-based detection mission specifically designed for planetary defense, NEO Surveyor will seek out, measure, and characterize the hardest-to-find asteroids and comets that might pose a hazard to Earth.

While many near-Earth objects don’t reflect much visible light, they glow brightly in infrared light due to heating by the Sun.

The spacecraft’s telescope, which has an aperture of nearly 20 inches (50 centimeters), features detectors sensitive to two infrared wavelengths in which near-Earth objects re-radiate solar heat.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has cut off most of the funding Washington had been providing to the controversial ‘White Helmets’ volunteer organization in Syria, CNN reported on Thursday, citing internal documents and the organization.

The Syrian Civil Defense, popularly known as the White Helmets, was created in 2014 at the height of the country’s civil war, and billed itself as a volunteer rescue force dedicated to helping civilians injured by the government of former President Bashar Assad.It received funding from Western governments.

During the protracted struggle, the White Helmets were praised in the Western media as heroes. Extensive evidence, however, suggests that at least some of its media content was staged. Onseveral occasions, members of the group were filmed participating in apparent executions by jihadists.

Its US Agency for International Development (USAID) funding has been terminated as part of the Trump administration’s broader curtailing of foreign aid contracts. The spending cuts affect programs related to firefighting, search and rescue, andso-called “community resilience”work, according to the outlet. Despite ongoing scrutiny of the group’s activities and affiliations, a smaller contract from theUS State Department to fund what is described as “accountability work” reportedly remains in place.

In a letter to Congress, a USAID official said 5,341 awards had been terminated as of March 21, including a nearly $30 million White Helmets contract that began in February 2023, CNN said. Some of the funds have already been spent. A separate $1.4 million State Department contract reportedly remains active.

Upon taking office, Trump suspended most US foreign aid for a three-month review to assess its alignment with his “America First” agenda, freezing tens of billions in USAID-approved grants.

Farouq Habib, the deputy general manager of the organization, told CNN that theWhite Helmets have had a “great partnership” with USAID– the NGO’s major backer for nearly a decade. According to him, US support during Syria’s transition following Assad’s ouster is very important “in the absence of a functional, strong government.”

The White Helmets, co-founded by the late British mercenary and presumed former intelligence officer James Le Mesurier, rose to international notoriety amid the years-long conflict in Syria.

During the war, the group operated exclusively in areas controlled by assorted jihadist groups opposing Assad’s government. The White Helmets have allegedlybeen involved in multiple false flag ‘chemical incidents’, which it blamed on government troops. Understanding Cosmic Explosions: StarBurst Arrives at NASA for Testing

StarBurst, a wide-field gamma ray observatory, arrived at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, March 4 for environmental testing and final instrument integration.

The instrument is designed to detect the initial emission of short gamma-ray bursts, a key electromagnetic indicator of neutron star mergers.

“Gamma-ray bursts are among the most powerful explosions in the universe, and they serve as cosmic beacons that help us understand extreme physics, including black hole formation and the behavior of matter under extreme conditions,” said Dr. Daniel Kocevski, principal investigator of the StarBurst mission at NASA Marshall.

According to Kocevski, neutron star mergers are particularly exciting because they produce gamma-ray bursts and gravitational waves, meaning scientists can study these events using two different signals – light and ripples in space time.

The merging of neutron stars forges heavy elements such as gold and platinum, revealing the origins of some of Earth’s building blocks.

“By studying these gamma-ray bursts and the neutron star mergers that produce them, we gain insights into fundamental physics, the origins of elements, and even the expansion of the universe,” Kocevski said.

“Neutron star mergers and gamma-ray bursts are nature’s laboratories for testing our understanding of the cosmos.”

StarBurst will undergo flight vibration and thermal vacuum testing at Marshall in the Sunspot Thermal Vacuum Testing Facility. These tests ensure it can survive the rigors of launch and harsh environment of space.

Final instrument integration will happen in the Stray Light Facility, which is a specialized environment to help identify and reduce unwanted light in certain areas of the optical systems.

StarBurst is a collaborative effort led by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, with partnerships with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, the University of Alabama Huntsville, the Universities Space Research Association, and the UTIAS Space Flight Laboratory.

StarBurst was selected for development as part of the NASA Astrophysics Pioneers program, which supports lower-cost, smaller hardware missions to conduct compelling astrophysics science.

NASA’s Dust Shield Successfully Repels Lunar Regolith on Moon

NASA’s Electrodynamic Dust Shield (EDS) successfully demonstrated its ability to remove regolith, or lunar dust and dirt, from its various surfaces on the Moon during Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1, which concluded on March 16.

Lunar dust is extremely abrasive and electrostatic, which means it clings to anything that carries a charge.

It can damage everything from spacesuits and hardware to human lungs, making lunar dust one of the most challenging features of living and working on the lunar surface.

The EDS technology uses electrodynamic forces to lift and remove the lunar dust from its surfaces.

The “before” image highlights the glass and thermal radiator surfaces covered in a layer of regolith, while the “after” image reveals the results following EDS activation.

Dust was removed from both surfaces, proving the technology’s effectiveness in mitigating dust accumulation.

This milestone marks a significant step toward sustaining long-term lunar and interplanetary operations by reducing dust-related hazards to a variety of surfaces for space applications ranging from thermal radiators, solar panels, and camera lenses to spacesuits, boots, and helmet visors.

The EDS technology is paving the way for future dust mitigation solutions, supporting NASA’s Artemis campaign and beyond.

NASA’s Electrodynamic Dust Shield was developed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with funding from NASA’s Game Changing Development Program, managed by the agency’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.

Finding Clues in Ruins of Ancient Dead Star With NASA’s Chandra

People often think about archaeology happening deep in jungles or inside ancient pyramids. However, a team of astronomers has shown that they can use stars and the remains they leave behind to conduct a special kind of archaeology in space.

Mining data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, the team of astronomers studied the relics that one star left behind after it exploded.

This “supernova archaeology” uncovered important clues about a star that self-destructed – probably more than a million years ago.

Today, the system called GRO J1655-40 contains a black hole with nearly seven times the mass of the Sun and a star with about half as much mass. However, this was not always the case.

Originally GRO J1655-40 had two shining stars. The more massive of the two stars, however, burned through all of its nuclear fuel and then exploded in what astronomers call a supernova.

The debris from the destroyed star then rained onto the companion star in orbit around it, as shown in the artist’s concept.

With its outer layers expelled, including some striking its neighbor, the rest of the exploded star collapsed onto itself and formed the black hole that exists today.

The separation between the black hole and its companion would have shrunk over time because of energy being lost from the system, mainly through the production of gravitational waves.

When the separation became small enough, the black hole, with its strong gravitational pull, began pulling matter from its companion, wrenching back some of the material its exploded parent star originally deposited.

While most of this material sank into the black hole, a small amount of it fell into a disk that orbits around the black hole.

Through the effects of powerful magnetic fields and friction in the disk, material is being sent out into interstellar space in the form of powerful winds.

This is where the X-ray archaeological hunt enters the story. Astronomers used Chandra to observe the GRO J1655-40 system in 2005 when it was particularly bright in X-rays.

Chandra detected signatures of individual elements found in the black hole’s winds by getting detailed spectra – giving X-ray brightness at different wavelengths – embedded in the X-ray light.

Some of these elements are highlighted in the spectrum shown in the inset.

The team of astronomers digging through the Chandra data were able to reconstruct key physical characteristics of the star that exploded from the clues imprinted in the X-ray light by comparing the spectra with computer models of stars that explode as supernovae.

They discovered that, based on the amounts of 18 different elements in the wind, the long-gone star destroyed in the supernova was about 25 times the mass of the Sun, and was much richer in elements heavier than helium in comparison with the Sun.

This analysis paves the way for more supernova archaeology studies using other outbursts of double star systems.

Cellular Immunity, Robotics, and Cargo Departure Preps Top Crew Day

The Expedition 72 crew members explored ways to protect their immune and circulatory systems in microgravity and tested robotic docking procedures aboard the International Space Station on Thursday.

The orbital residents also finished packing a U.S. cargo craft ahead of its departure on Friday.

Without Earth’s gravity pulling down, an astronaut’s body begins quickly changing in a multitude of ways that teams of doctors study every day to keep crews healthy on long-duration missions.

One experiment, the Immunity Assay investigation, collects blood and saliva samples from crew members for processing and stowage in science freezers.

Afterward, the samples are returned to Earth for analysis to detect space-caused cellular stress and tissue damage possibly leading to treatments for crews.

JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Flight Engineer Takuya Onishi submitted his samples for the study on Thursday that may help researchers prevent stress-related immunity conditions in space and on Earth.

Station Commander Alexey Ovchinin and Flight Engineer Ivan Vagner, both Roscosmos cosmonauts, continued their space biology investigation exploring how blood flows from the brain to their limbs in microgravity.

The duo took turns wearing sensors attached to their forehead, fingers, and toes revealing how the circulatory system adapts to spaceflight.

The veteran cosmonauts are in the middle of a weeklong study adding to the vast knowledge of space medicine doctors will use to protect crews traveling farther away from Earth.

As humans begin spending more time off the Earth the space industry continuously advances promoting new technologies benefitting crews in space as well as society on Earth.

A pair of toaster-sized Astrobee robotic free-flyers were maneuvering inside the Kibo laboratory module testing autonomous docking techniques on Thursday.

NASA Flight Engineer Don Pettit activated the devices and monitored them in collaboration with engineers on the ground.

The technology demonstration may enable satellite servicing, orbital refueling, spacecraft repair, and manufacturing in space.

The Cygnus cargo craft is in the grips of the Canadarm2 robotic arm and still attached to the Unity module’s space-facing port. Robotics controllers will remotely command Canadarm2 to detach Cygnus from Unity overnight then release it into Earth orbit at 6:55 a.m. EDT on Friday.

NASA Flight Engineer Nichole Ayers will be on duty monitoring Cygnus as it departs the space station completing a seven-and-a-half-month stay at the orbital lab. NASA+ will begin its broadcast of Cygnus’ release and departure at 6:30 a.m.

Ayers and fellow NASA astronaut Anne McClain finished packing Cygnus and configured the spacecraft for its removal on Thursday.

The duo exited Cygnus, closed its hatch, conducted leak checks, then depressurized the vestibule, or the area in between Cygnus and the orbiting lab.

Flight Engineer Kirill Peskov spent the first half of his shift servicing an oxygen generator in the Zvezda service module.

In the afternoon, Peskov tested a video camera that can image natural and manmade catastrophes on Earth in a variety of wavelengths.

He wrapped up his day continuing to replace life support gear that condenses and purifies water in Zvezda.

The first image from a new Italian Earth observation satellite mission was published today: a high-resolution image of a strip of the Italian peninsular showing the city of Rome at a resolution of 2.66 metres.

This is three times higher than the resolution currently available for systematic acquisition over Italy.

The image was taken by a multispectral optical instrument on board the first IRIDE microsatellite, the Pathfinder Hawk, which was launched on 14 January this year.

The IRIDE constellation of satellites are tailored to provide information for a wide range of environmental, emergency and security services for Italy.

The image was captured on the 5 March 2025, during a passage over central Italy from the town of Fano on the Adriatic coast, over the central Apennine ridge, all the way down to Rome and, about 20 km further south, to Ostia on the coast of Lazio.

IRIDE is an ambitious Italian space programme, initiated by the Italian government and developed with funding from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Coordinated by ESA with support from the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the IRIDE programme involves the deployment of six satellite constellations, which together can potentially include more than 60 satellites.

The first image was presented at an event today at ESA-ESRIN, ESA's establishment in Italy.

New Earth observation services for Italy

This first images from the IRIDE constellation mark the start of a generation of optical multispectral images from satellites entirely designed and integrated in Italy.

Data from IRIDE’s satellites will be used to map and monitor coastal and marine zones, helping to protect the cultural and environmental heritage of Italy’s coastlines.

The programme will also contribute data to monitoring air quality, land cover, climate and water resources; mapping land motion (for example, due to volcanoes, earthquakes or subsidence); as well as emergency and security services.

Many of the services will be available to local and regional public authorities in Italy, signalling an increase in the use of satellite technology in the routine activities related to managing local urban or rural environments.

For example, IRIDE will provide services to help manage town and city planning, monitor changes in land coverage, and the effects of urban heat islands.

“These first images show the extraordinary potential of IRIDE, made possible thanks to the skills and motivation of the teams from ESA, ASI and Italian industry, said ESA’s Head of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli.

She added, “I would like to congratulate Argotec, Officina Stellare, Exprivia and all the companies involved in the creation of this constellation.

On 28 and 29 March, institutions across Germany will be presenting their space research work and inviting people to join in with a range of activities.

Space Day will kick off today with an event at the Futurium in Berlin.

The Governments of the United States of America and the Argentine Republic are pleased to reaffirm their enduring partnership and commitment to the responsible and peaceful uses and exploration of outer space following a series of bilateral space consultations held in Washington D.C., March 11-13, 2025.

The United States and Argentina have collaborated for more than six decades on mutually beneficial space activities—from forging commercial partnerships that strengthen our shared economic prosperity to using groundbreaking space science to improve lives on Earth.

Recently, through the Artemis Accords, both nations have increased the safety of operations and reduced risk and uncertainty via our shared commitment to the responsible and peaceful uses and exploration of outer space.

"That's what we call dogfighting in space. They are practicing tactics, techniques and procedures to do on-orbit space operations from one satellite to another."

Guetlein's stark comment about China signals a break with the past.

"This marks the end of the Western-American-liberal dream of nations leaving wars on Earth so they can cooperate in space to advance humanity," Richard Fisher of the International Assessment and Strategy Center told Gatestone after the general's widely publicized remarks.

"Communist China has now taken war to the heavens, to low earth orbit, and very likely, will take war to the moon, Mars, and beyond. The heavens are no longer safe for the democracies."

Space is now a highly contested domain, but it wasn't always this way. "We told ourselves we would be the dominant power forever," Brandon Weichert, author of Winning Space: How America Remains a Superpower, said to Gatestone.

"We coasted on that notion for far too long. Rising powers, notably China and Russia, saw how reliant we were on space—and how poorly defended our systems were. Our access to the strategic high ground is now more threatened than ever before."

As Weichert points out, "bureaucratic inertia and a lack of visionary leadership from both political parties" allowed China and Russia to develop the capabilities to threaten America in space.

There was another party at fault: The U.S. military failed to protest when it could see there was an obvious threat.

"There was a gentlemen's agreement until recent that we didn't mess with each other's space systems," Guetlein said.

"We didn't jam them, we didn't spoof them, we didn't lase them, we just kept them safe."

James Webb Space Telescope discovers 2 galaxies forming breathtaking 'cosmic lens': Space photo of the day

An elliptical galaxy and a spiral galaxy appear as one celestial body as a result of the effects of mass on spacetime, the fabric of the universe.

Why is this amazing?

Two celestial bodies become one in a rare cosmic phenomenon called an "Einstein ring."

Einstein rings are the result of light from one very distant object being lensed, or "bent" about a massive object located in between the target and the viewer.

This effect — which demonstrates that light and spacetime, the fabric of the universe, can be bent by mass — cannot be observed on a local level.

It sometimes can occur, though, when the curvature of light is on tremendous scales, such as when the light from one galaxy is bent around another galaxy or galaxy cluster as seen here.

Whare are the two galaxies in this Einstein ring?

The elliptical galaxy at the center of this Einstein ring belongs to a galaxy cluster named SMACSJ0028.2-7537. It can be seen as the oval-shaped, featurless glow around the small bright core.

The spiral galaxy being wrapped or lensed around the elliptical galaxy appears to be stretched and warped into a ring, with bright blue lines drawn through it where the spiral arms have been stretched into circles.

Why and how was this image taken?

The James Webb Space Telescope data used in this image was taken as part of the Strong Lensing and Cluster Evolution (SLICE) survey led by Guillaume Mahler at University of Liège in Belgium, together with a team of international astronomers.

The survey is intended to trace 8 billion years of galaxy cluster evolution by targeting 182 galaxy clusters with Webb's Near-InfraRed Camera instrument.

This image also incorporates data from two of the Hubble Space Telescope's instruments, the Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Camera for Surveys.

Best places in the US and Canada to see rare 'double sunrise' during partial solar eclipse tomorrow

It may not be a total solar eclipse, but the partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025, will bring some very unusual views of the sun and moon to some observers in North America.

Seen as a run-of-the-mill partial solar eclipse in mainland Europe (where about a third of the sun will disappear behind the moon with the two high in the sky in mid-morning), the event is a little more fraught in North America, where it will happen at sunrise.

It will also create a weird "double sunrise" effect from some locations in the U.S. state of Maine and the provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec in Canada.

Understanding the eclipse map

NASA's map of this eclipse can be hard to understand. It shows the full extent of the moon's shadow from northeastern North America to Europe, northern Russia and northwestern Africa.

The orange line on the left shows the sunrise and sunset lines. From the sunrise line on the left, places including Niagara Falls, Washington D.C. and Virginia Beach will see about a 1% eclipse at sunrise.

This is where the eclipse ends at sunrise. On the right is another orange line — dissecting Newfoundland, Canada — which marks where the eclipse begins at sunrise.

Between the two is a blue line — and that's where eclipse chasers will gather. It denotes precisely where the maximum eclipse occurs at sunrise or sunset.

This is where you can see the most eclipse at sunrise. It dissects Quebec, goes through southwestern New Brunswick and clips northern Maine.

Where to see an eclipsed sunrise

There are plenty of locations between the "ends at sunrise" and "maximizes at sunrise" lines to watch some kind of eclipsed sunrise, with New York seeing a 21% eclipse and Boston about 43%, though, for such a sight, a clear ocean horizon is advised. Even then, clear weather on the horizon will be required.

The entire thing could so easily be a bust — but for eclipse chasers, it's a rare opportunity to see something rare.

From the east coast of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, a big eclipsed sunrise will be seen, with a crescent sun rising vertically out of the ocean from coastal locations.

However, from coastal locations in northern Maine, New Brunswick and Quebec, it may be possible to see "devil's horns" as the sun rises while eclipsed, its cusps rising separately to create the illusion of a "double sunrise."

The sun will be about 80-90% eclipsed from Maine, New Brunswick and Quebec.

2 newly found exoplanets reignite an outstanding question about our solar system

Astronomers have discovered two new exoplanets that are similar to other worlds found in the Milky Way, but are unlike any in our own solar system.

The two exoplanets, or planets outside of our solar system, orbit a star called TOI-1453, which is slightly cooler and smaller than our sun.

Located about 250 light-years from Earth in the Draco constellation, TOI-1453 belongs to a binary stellar system — in which a pair of stars orbit each other.

Classified as a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune, these two new celestial bodies are among the most common types of exoplanets found in the Milky Way galaxy, yet are absent from our own solar system.

Astronomers detected the two new exoplanets, named TOI-1453 b and TOI-1453 c, using data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher for the Northern hemisphere (HARPS-N) spectrograph, which is installed on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain.

TESS hunts for exoplanets by looking for a temporary decrease in a star's brightness, also known as the transit method.

When a dip in brightness is observed, that suggests a planet has passed in front of its host star (from our perspective on Earth) and briefly blocked the star's light from reaching our instruments.

By measuring this effect, astronomers can estimate the size and orbital period of the possible exoplanet as well.

Complementing the TESS data, the HARPS-N instrument is a high-resolution radial-velocity spectrograph that measures the spectrum of light from a star to detect shifts caused by orbiting exoplanets.

The instrument uses what's known as the Doppler method to look for a subtle "wobble" of a star caused by the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet.

"The two planets present an interesting contrast in their characteristics," Manu Stalport, first author of the study and an astrophysicist at the University of Liège, said in the statement.

"TOI-1453 b is a super-Earth, slightly larger than our planet, and probably rocky. It completes its orbit in just 4.3 days, making it a very close planet to its star."

"Super-Earth" is used to classify exoplanets that are more massive than Earth but less massive than ice giants like Neptune and Uranus.

They are believed to be primarily rocky, similar to Earth, but their increased size may lead to stronger surface gravity, influencing their atmospheres and geological processes.

Given its proximity to its host star, TOI-1453 b is likely extremely hot, with surface temperatures high enough to strip away any substantial atmosphere.

(For comparison, Mercury — the planet closest to the sun in our solar system — completes its orbit in 88 days and is so hot that it also lacks a substantial atmosphere.)

"In contrast, TOI-1453 c is a sub-Neptune, about 2.2 times the size of Earth but with an extraordinarily low mass of just 2.9 Earth masses," Stalport said in the statement.

"This makes it one of the least dense sub-Neptunes ever discovered, which raises questions about its composition."

The incredibly low density of TOI-1453 c suggests the exoplanet likely has a thick, hydrogen-rich atmosphere or a composition dominated by water.

"This makes it an ideal candidate for future atmospheric studies," Stalport added. "Understanding their formation and evolution could provide clues about the development of planetary systems, including our own."

Being part of a binary system — meaning there is a second stellar companion — also makes the new exoplanet find particularly interesting, given planets that form in binary star environments are subject to more complex gravitational interactions.

Observations of TOI-1453 b and TOI-1453 c show that the exoplanets orbit their host star in a near 3:2 resonance, meaning that for every three orbits of the inner planet, the outer planet completes almost exactly two.

This suggests that the exoplanets' orbits may have changed over time following interactions with neighboring cosmic objects, such as gas, planetesimals or a companion star, bringing the inner planet, TOI-1453 b, into an orbit much closer to its host star.

Astronomers hope to use additional instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to further study the exoplanets and peer deeper into the atmosphere of TOI-1453 c.

If this sub-Neptune world has a substantial hydrogen-rich atmosphere or a water-dominated interior, it could redefine our understanding of the formation of such exoplanets — and maybe finally reveal new clues as to why we don't have one in our own solar system.

A new set of predictions for the so-called "blaze star," T Corona Borealis suggests the star might go nova on either March 27, November 10, or June 25, 2026.

However, other astronomers are skeptical about these predictions, which are based on an implied pattern in the explosive system's orbital configuration,

"T Corona Borealis [T CrB] is a unique object that has fascinated amateur and professional astronomers for more than a century," Léa Planquart of the Institut d'Astronomie et d’Astrophysique at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, told Space.com.

T CrB is a symbiotic binary, a vampire system in which a white dwarf is siphoning material from a red giant star.

A white dwarf is the dense, compact core remnant of a once sun-like star, packing a mass equivalent to that of a star into a volume about the size of Earth.

A red giant represents an earlier stage in a star's evolution, when a sun-like star starts to run out of its hydrogen fuel supply and begins to swell.

Its distended atmosphere then becomes easy prey to the gravity of the far smaller, but denser, white dwarf.

Material captured from the red giant forms a spiraling disk around the white dwarf, ultimately depositing that material onto the white dwarf's surface.

Once enough material has built up, a thermonuclear explosion ignites. It does not destroy the white dwarf, but we can see the light of the explosion across thousands of light-years.

We call this a nova, after the Latin for "new star."

Typically, T CrB languishes at about magnitude +10, which means it is so faint that it can only be seen through moderate-aperture telescopes or large binoculars.

However, when it goes nova, it brightens to naked-eye visibility, and hence briefly becomes seen as a "new star" in the night sky.

T CrB is actually even more special than that, because it is one of only 11 known "recurrent" novas, which are seen to go nova repeatedly, with gaps of less than 100 years between explosions.

Previously, on February 9, 1946 and May 12, 1866, the white dwarf in the T CrB system went nova.

It also went nova around Christmastime in 1787, although the exact date isn't known, and there is also a suggestion that a nova connected to this star was seen sometime in the autumn night sky of 1217.

Prior to the 1946 nova, T CrB brightened slightly in 1938, before dimming again just before going nova.

The same pattern has also been seen in T CrB this time around, with it brightening by 0.7 magnitudes in 2015 before dimming again in 2023.

This is why astronomers are anticipating a new nova.

Jean Schneider of Paris Observatory, has also noticed what he believes to be a pattern between the timing of the T CrB nova events.

The red giant and white dwarf take 227.5687 days to orbit one another, and Schneider believes that each nova takes place after a time equal to an exact whole number of orbits.

In other words, something about the position of the white dwarf and the red giant is triggering the nova outbursts, he says.

Yet, because their orbits are circular, no single position should have an effect. So, Schneider proposes the presence of a third object in the T CrB system on a wider, elliptical orbit.

Every 79–80 years, he says the third object is close to the white dwarf, meaning that the white dwarf can feed off both the red giant and this hypothetical third object at the same time.

This would enhance the rate of matter falling onto the white dwarf, creating the conditions for a nova.

So far, this third object, if it exists, has remained undetected, but Schneider tells Space.com that "it could be detected by astrometry, radial velocity, direct imaging, a transit or microlensing."

Indeed, Schneider wonders whether it hasn't already been detected but just not recognized. On April 21, 2016, the T CrB system suddenly increased in visual brightness by 0.5 magnitudes.

"I have the following, qualitative interpretation, which is that before then, the third body was outside the pixel corresponding to the visual measurements," he said.

In other words, the third object moved close enough to the other two components of the T CrB system that from our point of view it was sharing a pixel with them in images, adding its brightness to the combined light of the red giant and white dwarf.

However, other astronomers are not yet convinced.

Léa Planquart has studied T CrB and other recurrent novas, and in January published a paper describing the mass transfer between the red giant and the white dwarf based on radial velocity observations with the HERMES spectrograph on the 1.2-meter Mercator telescope at La Palma in Chile.

Radial velocity here, for context, refers to the Doppler shifted motions of the individual stars and the matter being transferred between the red giant, what's known as the "accretion disk" and the white dwarf.

"Jean Schneider has suggested the presence of a third companion in an eccentric orbit with a period of 80 years," Planquart told Space.com. "Such additional orbital motion is, however, not detected in our decade-long radial-velocity monitoring."

In other words, radial velocity measurements show no evidence for a third star, although Planquart cannot rule out a low-mass body such as a large exoplanet.

Jeremy Shears, who is the Director of the British Astronomical Association's Variable Star Section, also has doubts.

"Most astronomers are skeptical about this prediction, as am I," he told Space.com. "The best thing to do is to keep watching every clear night."

Should there be no third object, and if the pattern seen by Schneider in the dates of previous novas is just a coincidence, then what is happening to T CrB?

Planquart's observations shed some light on the matter, particularly the brightening seen in 1938 and 2015, followed by a dimming, most recently seen in 2023.

"We realized that from 2015 to 2023, the accretion disk around the white dwarf had reached its maximum extension and became hotter and more luminous, leading to increased brightness," Planquart said.

This enhanced what Planquart calls "the vampirization effect," increasing the transfer of matter to the white dwarf in a "super-active phase."

Then, in 2023, the accretion disk cooled back down again, resulting in the dimming, although matter continues to flow from the disk to the white dwarf at a slower rate.

"It is likely that this enhanced activity is necessary to trigger the nova explosion, as it allows the material to accumulate more rapidly," said Planquart.

However, the details are still somewhat unclear — what causes the state change in the accretion disk that leads to the super-active phase, and exactly what is happening on the surface of the white dwarf between the disk cooling again and the nova explosion?

Although Schneider's exact date predictions may or may not come to pass, the pattern of the super-active phase followed by quiescence and dimming suggests that the nova is just around the corner.

"We may expect to see the explosion in the coming months — or possibly next year," said Planquart.

When that happens, what can we expect to see in the night sky? In 1946, T CrB reached magnitude +2, meaning it was easily visible to the naked eye, similar in brightness to the stars of the Big Dipper. Shears expects it to be just as bright this time around.

T CrB is located in the constellation of Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown, which is currently visible in the night sky across the whole of the Northern Hemisphere and from as far south as South Africa and Australia (albeit low down in the sky from southerly locations).

"At present T CrB is tenth magnitude, so it is only visible in giant binoculars," said Shears. "But when it rises [in brightness] it will become visible in standard binoculars and then the naked eye."

And the rise in brightness will be rapid. "It’s only a matter of a few hours for the rise to occur — precisely how many is not known as the rise has never been caught before," said Shears.

"That’s why it is so exciting. We hope that with so many observers this time around, we may indeed catch it as it awakes from its slumber."

Indeed there will be many observers, as astronomers wait and watch to catch a glimpse of this rare nova and learn more about what is happening on the surface of this white dwarf when it hosts a giant thermonuclear explosion.

"When it explodes, it will be one of the most extensively observed objects, targeted by telescopes worldwide," said Planquart.

As for what the future holds for T CrB, an even larger explosion is on the horizon. The mass of the white dwarf in the T CrB system is 1.37 times the mass of our sun.

This is very close to the Chandrasekhar limit, which is 1.44 solar masses, and is the point at which the thermonuclear detonation overcomes the white dwarf and blows it to smithereens as a Type Ia supernova.

As it steadily steals mass from its companion red giant and grows in the process, it accelerates its own demise.

Miles Space flight tests water-fueled thruster

Miles Space has demonstrated a water-fueled electric thruster with unusually lower power demands.

“We have a water-vapor-based plasma thruster that works at power levels so low, people don’t believe it,” Miles Space CEO Brad Berkson told SpaceNews.

During testing conducted in September 2024 on a European satellite, Miles Space’s Poseidon M1.5 thruster, which fits in a one-unit cubesat, demonstrated its utility for applications like descent from low-Earth orbit where thrusters fire for a long time, said an engineer who does not work for Miles Space but reviewed raw telemetry data.

The 10-centimeter-cube M1.5 produced thrust of 37.5 millinewtons over five minutes at a specific impulse of 4,800 seconds, while drawing power of 1.5 watts.

By comparison, hydrazine propulsion offers ten times more thrust but operates at a lower specific impulse. And Hall-effect thrusters can provide similar force at a lower specific impulse but may need hundreds of times the power.

“This enables some high Delta V missions to be performed that wouldn’t be possible otherwise due to either excessive fuel mass or thruster power requirements,” said the engineer who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized by his employer to discuss the propulsion.

Neural Network

Wesley Faler, chief technology officer for Florida-based Miles Space, developed the M1.5 thruster over a couple of years with the help of artificial intelligence.

After establishing parameters for reaction chamber length and width, inlet locations, exit voltage and timing, Faler used genetic algorithms to simulate various combinations.

“Out would come thrust data and fuel-economy data,” Faler said. “I would decide which data points were better and the system used a neural net to understand my responses.

Then, it would use that trained neural net to run simulations when I wasn’t around.”

Every couple of days, Faler reviewed the most promising simulations and provided feedback.

“Genetic algorithms were coming up with the shape of the thruster,” Faler said.

“They evaluated themselves against a three-layer neural net that learned from talking to the human. Neither rise to the level of today’s AI.”

Dr. Troy E. Meink, nominated to be the next secretary of the Department of the Air Force, told a Senate committee March 27 that America’s “near-peer competitors are evolving faster that we are” and that the Air Force and Space Force must “innovate faster” to meet the challenge.

“The department is building and operating some of the most complex systems ever fielded in both air and space,” Meink told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing.

“We need not only the right number of Airmen and Guardians, but also need the right skills, training, support and focus to deliver and operate those systems.”

Meink told the committee that his goal, if confirmed, is “to organize, train and equip the Department of the Air Force to have the lethality needed to deter all potential aggressors, and if necessary, win in conflict.”

“A big part of these jobs was understanding the threat I was building systems to have to support against this quickly evolving threat,” he said. “These threats have shaped my perspective.”

That experience has allowed him to identify three “challenges.”

The first, he said, is that “near-peer competitors, such as China, are evolving faster than we are in some cases, which will eventually result in the U.S. losing technological advantage.”

The second is that “some competitors, such as Russia, are fielding highly escalatory, asymmetric capabilities,” he said.

Those realities, in his view mean, “Our homeland is increasing put on the defensive from threats such as cyberattack, unmanned aerial systems and illegal activities at the border.”

As is typical for confirmation hearings, Meink offered broad recommendations for his approach and priorities if he becomes the department’s highest-ranking civilian leader.

In addition to innovating faster, Meink said he would work to increase competition and expand the industrial base.

That is something he has focused on in his current job as the National Reconnaissance Office’s principal deputy director.

As part of that focus Meink said he “significantly accelerated delivery of capability and at a lower cost. I intend to bring that same drive for innovation to the department.”

He agreed that maintaining space superiority is a priority. He underscored the importance of the nuclear deterrent and modernizing the land-based leg.

Like his predecessors, Meink said he will draw on his deep experience to bring speed and efficiency to the often-lumbering acquisition effort.

“We need to streamline the acquisition and budgeting processes,” he told the committee, adding, “with appropriate fiscal controls.

I’ve helped lead my current organization to 16 clean financial audits which I believe is a record in the national security enterprise.”

He also told senators that his deep history in senior national security positions shapes will shape his approach in the leading the department.

If confirmed, Meink will come to the office with a wealth of experience. A native of South Dakota, Meink entered the Air Force through ROTC in 1988 while a student at South Dakota State University.

He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and later, earned a doctorate in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Ohio State University.

Before serving in his current job, Meink was the Geospatial Intelligence Systems Acquisitions director at the National Reconnaissance Office.

He has logged time as a KC-135 navigator and instructor and as a lead test engineer for the design and evaluation of ballistic missile test vehicles for the Missile Defense Agency.

Across his time with the department and the Pentagon, Meink has managed multiple next generation joint research and development programs transitioning global space capabilities, optical sensors, and advanced structures.

He has also led multiple communications organizations within the Air Force and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Networks and Information Integration.

In what may be the first clear confirmation Trump's plan to realign the global trader system is working, moments ago Bloomberg reported that the European Union is identifying concessions it’s willing to make to Donald Trump’s administration to secure the partial removal of the US tariffs that have already started hitting the bloc’s exports and that are set to increase after April 2.

According to Bloomberg, EU officials were told at meetings this week in Washington that there was no way to avoid new auto and so-called reciprocal tariffs that Trump is launching next week. Discussions also began on what the contours of a potential deal to reduce them should eventually look like.

That prompted the European Commission (which handles trade matters for the EU) to start working on a “term sheet” for a potential concession agreement, which would set out areas for negotiations on the punitive trade measures, including lowering its own duties, mutual investments with the US as well as easing certain regulations and standards.

In short, Europe - led these days by France's Macron - did what Europe always does when led by the French: it surrendered.

Senate lawmakers confirmed Paul Lawrence as the next Veterans Affairs deputy secretary Thursday, putting in place another key leader at the department as administration officials plan massive reforms for the bureaucracy.

Lawrence, who previously served as VA’s under secretary for benefits during President Donald Trump’s first term in office, was approved along party lines by a 51-45 vote.

He is expected to be sworn into the No. 2 leadership post at the department in the next few days.

During his confirmation hearing last month, Lawrence faced opposition from Democratic lawmakers, not because of his qualifications, but because of concerns about Trump’s reform plans for VA.

Those plans include a proposal to slash the VA workforce by more than 80,000 workers, bringing staffing back to 2019 levels.

But Democratic votes were not needed in the Republican-majority chamber for Lawrence to be confirmed to the department leadership post.

The vote makes him essentially the chief operating officer for the department, where he’ll be handling a variety of issues, including the ongoing electronic health records overhaul.

During his confirmation hearing, Lawrence vowed to continue implementation of the PACT Act — a 2022 law dramatically expanding veterans benefits eligibility for military toxic exposure injuries — and work for ways to offer more medical care options to veterans.

He also denied accusations that Trump administration officials were working to massively shift veterans funding from federal medical centers to private-sector clinics.

“We are not going to privatize VA,” he said. “We would push back on any efforts to do that.”

Lawrence is an Army veteran who has written several books on management and government.

In an interview with Military Times last month, VA Secretary Doug Collins said that Lawrence’s confirmation needed to be completed before the department could move ahead on two other key leadership posts: the under secretary for health and the under secretary for benefits.

Both posts require a special panel review of potential candidates before a nominee can be announced. Lawrence, who previously served in the benefits role, will help with the administration of that work.

During Trump’s first term in office, the department did not have a confirmed leader of the Veterans Health Administration because of complications with that nomination process.

Trump has already tapped former Nevada Senate candidate Sam Brown to serve as the head of cemetery and memorial affairs for the department, the last of VA’s top five leadership posts.

Drone Headed to Smith State Prison Crashes into Glennville Home, Causing Fire

A drone strapped with contraband headed to Smith State Prison in Glennville, Georgia crashed into a home this week.

TheGeorgiaVirtue filed an Open Records Request with the Glennville Police Department, seeking documents related to the incident.

Those documents revealed that a patrol officer working responded to the scene following a request from fire department personnel.

Lieutenant Boyd with the Glennville Police Department responded to South Herrington Street on March 25 in response to the request.

The report states the incident occurred after 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening. When he arrived on scene, Boyd saw a home which he described as ‘visibly damaged by fire.’

From the report:

Lt. Boyd approached the scene and was shown a large object that was laying at the base of the house which appeared to have been the cause of the fire.

Upon closer inspection, Lt. Boyd found that the item appeared to be a drone (typically seen attempting to introduce contraband into Smith State Prison).

Lt. Boyd used his flashlight and looked closer to discover that there was loose tobacco, marijuana, and a cell phone that were sitting next to the drone which confirmed the thought that the drone was attempting to introduce contraband into Smith State Prison.

It appeared that it must have come from south east of the house near the auburn road area of Tattnall County.

Lt. Boyd contacted the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) over the investigators of the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The SAC informed Lt. Boyd that she would have an investigator come to the scene and collect all of the evidence to attempt to get any information from it that may identify the person(s) that were flying the drone.

Approximately an hour later, Special Agent Octavius Merricks arrived on scene. Agent Merricks collected all of the evidence and secured it in his state vehicle.

As of publishing, no arrests had been made.

Despite the Georgia Department of Corrections’ going struggle to secure its facilities, the state agency is largely immune from any civil suits brought forth by Georgians who are adversely impacted by the state prison system.

Police search wood with drone to identify and arrest man after indecent exposure

Police have been searching a wood with a drone to identify and arrest a man following an indecent exposure.

The incident occurred when a dog walker in her 60 was walking her dog in Radley Wood, near Abingdon, at about 4.30pm on Friday, March 21.

She was approached by a man who exposed himself and touched himself inappropriately.

In an attempt to identify and arrest the male, officers from the Abingdon neighbourhood policing team have been out in the area this week, searching through the woods and following up on enquiries.

The team said they have been working in partnership with the TVP Rural Crime Taskforce task force, who attended with a drone, plus officers from Incident Crime Response.

A spokesperson said: "If a crime of this nature is in progress and/or the suspect is still in the vicinity, then please call 999. We take all reports like this extremely seriously.

"Our patrols are continuing over the coming days and the investigation is ongoing."

110-lb cargo: Engineers develop electric drone to deliver fresh fruits, medicines

There’s a lot of growing interest in exploring the feasibility of using drones to transport vital supplies to remote areas instead of relying on trucks.

The success of this effort requires a robust drone system that can travel large distances.

Now, University of New South Wales (UNSW) engineers are spearheading the development of an all-electric powertrain for a revolutionary cargo drone.

This will be used to service the challenging logistics of remote rural Australia.

The project — led by Seaflight Technologies and Macquarie University with an Australian consortium — aims to transform remote logistics.

“You can start talking about resupplying a community with medical supplies or fresh fruit and vegetables that otherwise would have come from the other side of the country in a diesel-spewing truck,” said Graham Doig, Seaflight’s founder and Executive Technical Fellow.

“We’re taking that off the road, and we’re replacing it with near-zero emissions technology that can provide people with goods that they need the next day,” Doig added.

Prototype testing in late 2025

Priestley is heading the development of an all-electric drone powertrain, focusing on integrating and testing all power generation and delivery components for drone propulsion.

This advanced powertrain will energize the AURA-E, a sizable fixed-wing drone intended for long-range, heavy cargo transport. The drone is currently under development.

The AURA-E drone will be combined with a novel active aerodynamic flow control system. This innovative combination aims to increase the aircraft’s operational range and payload capacity.

The drone’s aerodynamic system improves its flight by controlling airflow, reducing resistance (drag), and increasing upward force (lift), which results in longer flight distances and the ability to carry more weight.

The project’s initial drone prototype aims to carry 88- 110 pounds (40-50 kg ) over hundreds of kilometers, but the team’s long-term goal is to develop a larger drone capable of transporting 440-660 pounds (200-300 kg).

The first flight of the AURA-E, targeted for late 2025, will involve UNSW students in the roles of flight testers and remote pilots.

Enhancing agriculture, mining industries

The team notes that developing local drone technology capabilities is vital for Australia’s national security.

This is due to drones’ importance in key industries like mining and agriculture and their potential use in surveillance operations.

“It’s important we get security right with these types of drones in the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) sector, because otherwise we risk hacking.

Drone security is crucial to manage public perceptions and acceptance of a technology that has the capacity to spy on you,” said Priestley in the press release.

Doig highlights that drones are transforming the aviation industry. In the future, there could be high-volume drone operations akin to a “mini airline.”

“If you imagine drones as being almost like a mini airline, you could have hundreds or even thousands of flights per day, and you have to understand every aspect that goes into running this mini airline,” added Doig, who is also a senior lecturer at UNSW’s School of Aviation.

This would require a new generation of aviation professionals with entrepreneurial skills.

The AURA-E drone project received $1.5 million in funding from the Australian Federal Government’s Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships (EATP), representing half of its total $3 million budget.

IDF says it struck Hezbollah drone storage facility in Beirut

The IDF says it struck a Hezbollah drone storage facility a short while ago in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

The facility used to store the drones belonged to Hezbollah’s aerial forces, known as Unit 127, the military says. The unit is responsible for explosive-laden drone attacks on Israel and flying surveillance drones to collect intelligence.

“Hezbollah has placed its terror infrastructure in the heart of the civilian population. This is another example of the Hezbollah terror organization’s cynical use of Lebanese citizens as human shields,” an IDF statement says.

The IDF issued an evacuation warning for the building before the strike and also reportedly carried out several warning shots in the area before dropping larger munitions.

The strike comes in response to this morning’s rocket fire from Lebanon on northern Israel, which the military says is a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement.

IDF, police say they thwarted attempt to smuggle weapons into Israel from Egypt by drone

The IDF and police say they foiled an attempt to smuggle nine assault rifles into Israel from Egypt last night, using a drone.

The drone had been identified crossing the border into Israel before it was downed by troops and police officers deployed to the area.

The drone and guns were handed over to the police for further investigation.

Earlier in the day yesterday, IDF troops caught another drone ferrying 10 kilograms of drugs.

In recent months, there have been frequent attempts to bring weapons and drugs over the Egyptian border using drones.

There have also been attempts to smuggle similar contraband from Israel into Gaza using drones.

Russian Army Accuses Ukraine of Attacking Sudzha Gas Metering Station

Russia's Defense Ministry on Friday accused Ukraine of firing rockets and more than a dozen drones at its energy infrastructure, violating a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement between the two warring sides.

"Over the past 24 hours, the Kyiv regime continued its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure using various types of drones and HIMARS multiple rocket launchers," the military said in a morning statement.

It claimed that Ukraine launched rockets at the Sudzha gas metering station in the southwestern Kursk region, already damaged in an earlier attack, as well as 19 drones at an oil refinery in the southern Saratov region.

President Vladimir Putin said he ordered a 30-day halt on strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure starting March 18, coming after a call with U.S. President Donald Trump.

However, Ukraine did not immediately agree to the ceasefire, and monitoring remains unclear as Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of violating the agreement.

The White House had said Tuesday that both Russia and Ukraine agreed separately to "develop measures for implementing" a halt on strikes on energy infrastructure.

On Friday, Ukraine denied claims that its forces fired on the gas metering station Sudzha and accused Russia's military of striking the facility.

"Russia has again attacked the Sudzha gas transmission system in the Kursk region, which they do not control," Andriy Kovalenko, an official who is responsible for countering disinformation, said on social media.

Ukraine says Russia has repeatedly broken its own commitment not to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure and has called for the United States to react to the reported ceasefire violations.

Drones attack Engels airbase where Russia stores missiles, ammunition – CCD

Engels, a city in Russia's Saratov region, was attacked by drones, according to Andrii Kovalеnko, the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.

He said this in a post on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

"Engels, where the enemy continues to store missiles and ammunition for attacks on Ukraine, encountered unknown drones," Kovalenko said.

Ukrinform reported earlier that as a result of the March 20 strike on the Engels-2 airbase of the Russian Aerospace Forces, the enemy lost 96 cruise missiles that had been stockpiled for three missile strikes on Ukraine.

The White House has rejected Vladimir Putin’s suggestion for a temporary administration in Kyiv, while also seeking sweeping access to Ukraine’s minerals and energy commodities.

The Russian President said Volodymyr Zelensky’s government must be replaced to pave the way for a peace accord during a visit to a Russian nuclear submarine base on Thursday, before Moscow launched a drone assault on Ukraine overnight.

A White House national security council spokesperson snubbed the Kremlin leader’s demand and said the governance in Ukraine is determined by its constitution and the people of the country.

The Trump administration is also pushing for a major new resources deal with Kyiv that would give the US control over all of Ukraine’s energy assets and rare minerals.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian president said the US is constantly changing the terms of a key minerals agreement as part of peace deal.

Earlier, Emmanuel Macron announced that a British-French military delegation will be sent to Ukraine to scout Kyiv’s needs and what can be done to support its army – and that troops would be deployed as a “reassurance force” to uphold any potential peace deal agreed with Russia.

UK and France key to Kiev’s latest attack on Russian energy infrastructure – Moscow

British specialists set coordinates for a Ukrainian missile system that struck a gas metering station, the Foreign Ministry has said

France and the UK actively aided Kiev in a strike on the Sudzha pipeline infrastructure in Russia’s Kursk Region on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has told journalists. Earlier the Russian Defense Ministry said that a metering facility was “de facto destroyed” in a Ukrainian HIMARS attack.

“[We] have reasons to believe that targeting and navigation were facilitated through French satellites and British specialists input [target] coordinates and launched [the missiles],” Zakharova said, commenting on the strike.

“The command came from London,” she said, branding the attack part of a Ukrainian “terror” campaign targeting Russian energy infrastructure. The spokeswoman added that such actions demonstrate that Kiev is “impossible to negotiate with.”

Although Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky “publicly supported” a temporary suspension of strikes on energy infrastructure agreed by Moscow and Washington, he “did nothing to observe it,” according to Zakharova.

Moscow ordered that attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure cease on March 18, following a phone call between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Russia and the US also agreed on a list of energy facilities that should not be targeted as part of a truce earlier this week. The list included gas facilities.

Counter-drone testing interfered with commercial flights at Reagan National

Counter-drone testing performed by the Secret Service and US Navy reportedly triggered faulty traffic warnings for commercial aircraft on approach to Washington, DC’s Ronald Reagan National airport, congressional testimony revealed on 27 March.

During an aviation safety hearing on Capitol Hill following the 29 January mid-air collision between a commercial jet and military helicopter at the same airport, Republican senator Ted Cruz, chair of the commerce, science and transportation committee, said it was “very disturbing” that a testing programme had interfered with passenger flights at Reagan National on 1 March.

Cruz describes multiple reports of airline pilots receiving warnings from their traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) on approach to the airport.

The warnings “advised pilots of an impending threat from above, in some case directing the crews to take evasive action by descending”, he says.

“I think we were all alarmed that, just a few weeks after the tragedy, commercial pilots were being told that they were at imminent risk of a deadly mid-air collision.”

Cruz asserts that the Secret Service and the US Navy had been ”improperly testing counter-drone technology” at Reagan National on the day of the incidents.

“Apparently, the navy was using the same spectrum band as TCAS, causing the interference and faulty resolution advisories – even though the FAA had previously warned the navy and the Secret Service against using that specific spectrum band due to interference risks,” Cruz says.

Cruz asked Chris Rocheleau, sitting administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, whether that account of the 1 March incidents at Reagan National was accurate.

Rocheleau responded, “Yes, sir, that is correct.”

“It is deeply disturbing that just a month after 67 people died” that such testing had been allowed to occur, Cruz says. “I expect this committee to investigate precisely why that happened.”

The exchange occurred during a hearing on the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation into the 29 January accident involving a US Army Blackhawk helicopter colliding with a PSA Airlines MHIRJ CRJ700.

Both aircraft plunged into the ice-covered Potomac River, killing all crew and passengers. The accident has rocked the airline industry and prompted several operational changes at Reagan National.

After publishing a preliminary report on the accident earlier this month, the NTSB says its investigation is ongoing and has yet to determine a probable cause.

NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy testified on 27 March that a team of 40 accident investigators are seeking to finalise their report within one year, “barring unforeseen circumstances”.

Drone experiment reveals how Greenland ice sheet is changing

For the first time, researchers have collected detailed measurements of water vapor high above the surface of the Greenland ice sheet.

Their research, aided by a custom-designed drone, could help scientists improve ice loss calculations in rapidly warming polar regions.

"We will be able to understand how water moves in and out of Greenland in the next few years," said first author Kevin Rozmiarek, a doctoral student at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) at CU Boulder.

"As a major freshwater reservoir, we need to understand how Greenland's environment is going to change in the future."

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Greenland lost about 55 gigatons of ice and snow between fall 2023 and fall 2024.

The island is shedding ice for the 28th year in a row, and scientists estimate that it has lost more than 5 trillion tons of ice since 1992.

The Greenland ice sheet contains about 8% of the planet's freshwater, and its meltwater could contribute significantly to rising sea levels, changing ocean circulation and ecosystems worldwide.

The majority of ice loss comes from large ice chunks breaking off from glaciers and the melting of surface ice and snow.

Sublimation, the process of solids turning into gases without turning into liquids first, may also play a role.

Prior studies have suggested that in some parts of Greenland, about 30% of summer surface snow could sublimate to water vapor.

Tracking water in the sky

It is unclear where the water vapor goes, said Rozmiarek. Some might fall back down as snow or recondense on the surface later, but some could leave Greenland's water system entirely.

Collecting air samples in the Arctic is an expensive and technically challenging task, because it traditionally involves flying a plane to the middle of an ice sheet in harsh weather and carrying air samples back to the laboratory.

Rozmiarek and his team overcame the challenges by loading air sampling equipment on a large drone with a 10-foot wingspan.

Throughout the summer of 2022, the team flew the drone 104 times from the East Greenland Ice-Core Project camp—managed by the University of Copenhagen—in the island's interior.

The drone collected air samples at different heights of up to nearly 5,000 feet above the ground.

The team aimed to look into the type of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the air's water vapor. Water molecules from different sources contain distinct combinations of hydrogen and oxygen. Scientists call these variations in isotopes.

"Isotopes are water's fingerprints. By following these fingerprints, we can trace back to the source where the water vapor came from," Rozmiarek said.

Scientists have collected high-quality data on the source of water in Greenland, including water that flows from the tropics, and the sink, which is the surface snow on the Greenland ice sheet.

"But we don't know much about the isotopic composition of water in motion, which is the vapor between the source and sink," he added.

When the team compared their drone-based measurements with an existing computer simulation that models the Arctic water cycle, they found the simulation underestimated the amount of precipitation that fell on Greenland.

By incorporating the isotopic data observed in the simulation, the model rendered an accurate prediction of how water moves over Greenland.

"It's really important to be able to predict what's going to happen to Greenland in the warming world as accurately as possible," Rozmiarek said.

"We demonstrated how useful water vapor isotope data is by successfully improving an existing model."

About 125,000 years ago, when Earth was warmer than preindustrial levels, Greenland was covered by a significantly smaller ice sheet, and the sea level was as much as 19 feet higher than today.

As the planet continues to warm, the Greenland ice sheet could see dramatic changes and even shrink to its size back then, Rozmiarek said.

The Greenland ice sheet contains a massive amount of freshwater, and that water, if it leaves the system, could lead to significant increases in global sea level.

The United Nations estimates that rising sea levels caused by climate change currently impact 1 billion people worldwide.

Rozmiarek hopes to return to Greenland and other parts of the Arctic to conduct more flights and gather additional data. "It's like we just figured out how to discover fingerprints at a crime scene.

This is a concrete step forward in understanding where water is going and where it is coming from in this important system at a time when we need it most," he said.

Ukrainian police break into iconic Orthodox cave monastery

Kiev’s push to inventory the UNESCO site’s sacred relics is “blasphemous,” a UOC bishop has said

Ukrainian government officials and police havebroken into the catacombs of the country’s most important monastery, the Union of Orthodox Journalists (UOJ) has reported. Thecaves of Kiev Pechersk Lavra are the final resting spot of some of the country’s earliest Christian saints.

The Lavra, which wasfounded in around 1050, has been the epicenter of religious and political turmoil in recent years. The government of Vladimir Zelensky supports the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which was created in 2018 andhas been trying for months to wrest control of the monastery and countless otherchurch properties from the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).

The Ukrainian culture ministry had set up aspecial commission tasked with creating an inventory and evaluating the sacred relics kept at the monastery’s Near and Far Caves. The commission is expected to complete its work by the end of May and the results will be classified.

The UOJ said on its Telegram channel on Friday that the representatives of theministry and police officers “have begun the takeover” of the caves at Kiev Pechersk Lavra.Theyused an angle grinder to cut down the padlocks which had been placed on the doors of the underground facilities by UOC monks.

Bishop Gedeon Makarovsky of the UOC told RIA Novosti thatKiev’s push to make an inventory of the relics is “blasphemous.”

“Why would they make a list of the relics?In order to be able to take them out, hide them, steal them, move them and so on,” the cleric insisted.

When asked to comment on the actions of the Ukrainian authorities, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told RIA Novosti:“The Viy has returned to Kiev.” The Viy is a demonic creature from a classic 1835 storyof the same name by Ukrainian-born Russian writer Nikolay Gogol which is depicted as rampaging through a church.

The persecution of the UOC by the Ukrainian authorities intensified after the conflict between Moscow and Kiev escalated in February 2022. Zelensky justified the clampdown by alleging that the religious organization retained ties to the Moscow Patriarchate, despite it declaring full independence in May 2022.

Zelensky has asserted the need to protect Ukraine’s “spiritual independence” and deprive Russia of an opportunity to “to manipulate the spirituality of our people.”

Several churches have been seized by force from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church since the conflict escalated, and criminal cases have been opened against its clerics. A law banning the activities of the UOC in Ukraine officially came into force last September.

Kiev can’t control its own military – Kremlin

Ukrainian forces continue to attack Russian energy infrastructure in violation of the US-backed ceasefire, according to Dmitry Peskov

Kiev’s troops are apparently refusing to take orders from its political leaders, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Friday. While Ukraine publicly supported the 30-day partial ceasefire which Russia brokered with the US,its airstrikes continue, he said.(Rogue CIA giving orders)

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a halt to attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on March 18 following a phone call with his US counterpart Donald Trump. The two leaders discussed the initiative put forward by Washington and Moscow said it supported the idea at the time.

“Russia can state that the [Ukrainian] leadership has no control over its Armed Forces that do not follow its orders when it comes to attacks on the energy infrastructure facilities,” Peskov said, adding thatattempts to strikeRussian infrastructure “take place on a daily basis.”

Russia and the US also agreed on a list of energy facilities that should not be targeted as part of the truce earlier this week. The list included nuclear power plants, oil and gas facilities, and hydroelectric power plants.However, it is unclear if the Ukrainian government gave any orders to its troops afterwards.

The Kremlin then said that it intended to maintain the 30-day partial ceasefire as a gesture of goodwill to Washington, even if Kiev fails to honor it. The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned that Moscow reserves the right to withdraw from the agreement.

“If Ukraine had joined the [ceasefire] and gave relevant orders to its Armed Forces, they are apparently not being followed,” Peskov said on Friday, calling it a sign ofKiev’s “total lack of supervision” over the military’s actions.

Earlier on Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Kiev’s troops had attacked the country’s energy infrastructure in three separate regions, in violation of a US-mediated moratorium. The incidents, recorded over the past 24 hours, took place in Russia’s Belgorod, Kursk, and Saratov Regions, according to the ministry, which has published some video showing the aftermath of one of the attacks.The Russian military has been reporting similar violations among Ukrainian troops regularly since the agreement was made.

What was the Russian gas pipeline facility ‘destroyed’ by Kiev

The strike violates the ceasefire deal andnegates the possibility of quickly restoring service to the EU, according to Moscow

Ukraine has “destroyed” a key border energy facility in Kursk Region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The Sudzha gas metering station was part of a major pipeline, which for decades had delivered fuel to EU customers.

Here is what happened and the possible consequences of the attack.

Ukraine finishes off Sudzha station

According to the report by the Russian military, Ukrainian forces used US-made HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems tostrike the Sudzha gas pipeline facility on Friday, causing a blaze. The defense ministry in Moscow claimed that themetering station is no longer operational.

Last week, Moscow accused Kiev of sabotaging the same site using planted explosives. Ukrainian forces seized the station last August as part of their incursion into Kursk Region, but have been largely pushed out over recent weeks.

The Russian military said the Ukrainians had damaged the station during their retreat, as they could no longer use it for military logistics.

Ceasefire violation

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted a proposal from his US counterpart, Donald Trump, to suspend attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructure; Kiev agreed to the mutual moratorium.

The Russian military has since reported multiple violations by Ukraine, which it said demonstrates Kiev’s duplicity. Moscow claims it is honoring its obligations under the deal as part of an effort to normalize relations with Washington.

However, commenting on the destruction of the Sudzha station on Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated thatMoscow reserves the right to withdraw from the agreement, since “it would be illogical for us to observe it, when every night we face attempted strikes on our energy infrastructure.”

End of EU transit

The Sudzha station was part of an energy routeconnecting gas fields in Western Siberia with Uzhhorod, a city on the Ukrainian border with Hungary, feeding the fuel to gas pipelines in the EU.

Originally built by the USSR with German help in what the press dubbed “the deal of the century,”thepipeline provided Europe with access to cheap fuel for decades. Last year, over 15 billion cubic meters of Russian gas was delivered through Ukraine, despite the two nations engaging in an armed conflict.Kiev has received hundreds of millions of dollars in transit fees annuallyunder the scheme.

Kiev, however, refused to renew the contract with Russia that expired at the end of 2024, claiming that it wanted to deny Moscow the opportunity to sell gas to the EU.

The decision caused a crisis in the EU, as Hungary and Slovakia called on Brussels to apply pressure on Ukraine and secure continued supplies. Friday’s attack will delay the restoration of gas flows to the continent if a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev is reached.

Kiev’s move backfires

The end of transit backfired on Ukrainian forces in Kursk Region this month, as Russian troops infiltrated behind their defensive positions by traveling through the unused pipeline.

‘Operation Flow,’ as Moscow dubbed it, hastened the collapse of the Ukrainian incursion and led to the liberation of the town of Sudzha, which had previously served as the linchpin of Kiev’s attempts to seize Russian territory.

Russia will never blindly trust ‘Western partners’ again – Putin

The president has stated that Moscow will no longer tolerate diplomatic deception

President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that Moscow’s trust in Western Europe has beenfundamentally broken, stating that while Russia remains open to working with the EU to resolve the Ukraine conflict,it will no longer do so on the basis of trust.

The remarks came during Putin's meeting with Russian submarine crews following the launch of a new nuclear sub on Thursday,in the context of what he described as a “sincere” effort by US President Donald Trumpto find a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

While expressing cautious optimism toward Washington, the Russian president made it clearthat Europe is no longer regarded as a trustworthy interlocutor.

“We are ready to work with Europe,” Putin said.“But they behave inconsistently and keep trying to string us along. That’s fine – we’re used to it now. I hope we won’t make any more mistakes based on trust in our so-called Western partners.”

Putin accused Western leaders – particularly in France, Germany, and the UK – of manipulating previous peace efforts, especially the Minsk Agreements, as a tactic to buy time and rearm Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, the former leaders of some Western countries... openly and without shame, have admitted that they only needed the Minsk Agreements to rearm the Ukrainian regime and prepare it for military action against us,” Putin said.

“We tried to resolve these issues peacefully for eight years,” even “when the conflict entered a hot phase,” Putin explained, accusing former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson of derailing the 2022 Istanbul peace talks.

“It is well known that Western handlers... arrived and persuaded the Ukrainian leadership to continue armed resistance to the end, essentially to the last Ukrainian, with the goal of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia,” he said.

Despite the past breaches of trust, Putin maintained thatRussia is still open to dialogue– including with European nations – but stressed that future agreements must rest on firm, enforceable guarantees.

As part of this approach, he floated the idea ofplacing Ukraine under a temporary international administration. He suggested that a UN-led transitional authority could organize elections and establish a legitimate government capable of negotiating a lasting peace.

“Of course, it would be possible – under the UN’s auspices and together with the United States, European countries, and our partners – to discuss the introduction of a temporary administration in Ukraine,” Putin said. “In order to hold democratic elections and bring a capable, trusted government to power, with whom we could then sign legally binding agreements.”

He concluded by reaffirming that any resolution must address Russia’s long-term strategic interests.

“We must, without question, ensure Russia’s security for the long historical perspective,”he said.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is developing a plan to defund what he terms “anti-MAGA” judges who are obstructing Donald Trump’s agenda.

The influential Ohio Republican and staunch Trump ally has grown frustrated with “political” district judges who have been blocking executive actions aimed at cutting government spending, deporting illegal immigrants, and freezing foreign aid.

Since the start of his term, 15 lower court injunctions have paused White House initiatives—more than the total during Joe Biden’s entire tenure (14) and both of President Barack Obama’s terms combined (12).

More than 50 judicial actions nationwide have already stalled White House initiatives. Trump has condemned these judges as “radical” and described the injunctions as “unlawful.” Also, a growing number of legal experts on the left and right are criticizing what they see as the Judiciary infringing on a president’s Executive Branch authorities.

“Everything’s on the table,” Jordan said when asked about what Congress may do to rein in what he describes as “ridiculous orders” being issued by several mostly Democrat-appointed federal court judges.

He mentioned that legislation is already under consideration to disarm district court judges and others who may use injunctions to block policy changes. Jordan, 61, also pointed out that congressional hearings offer an opportunity to grill judges.

Moreover, Congress holds the constitutional authority to oversee the structure and funding of lower federal courts nationwide, which means Jordan could propose defunding or even eliminating some courts. He added that he has already had several discussions with Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., and others about how Congress can adjust and reorganize court funding.

“I briefly talked to them, and said we want to look at this. So trying to give them a heads up, so we’ll look at, you know, any and all things. And, like I said, everything’s on the table,” Jordan told the outlet. “There may be some other areas where we can look at where the appropriations and the power of the purse and funding makes sense.”

However, Jordan acknowledged that he wasn’t inclined to cut funding for court security—citing the harassment of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh following the landmark Dobbs abortion ruling as a cautionary example.

His plan aligns with Speaker Mike Johnson’s Tuesday remarks, which suggested that Congress has the authority to “eliminate” entire district courts.

Administration officials have led a widespread effort to dismantle the agency.

The State Department said Friday it was officially shuttering the U.S. Agency for International Development, in what could deal a final blow to the beleaguered foreign aid agency.

In a memo distributed to USAID employees and obtained by ABC News, Jeremy Lewin, the agency's new deputy director and a former Department of Government Efficiency official, wrote that the State Department "intends to assume responsibility for many of USAID's functions and its ongoing programming."

The State Department "will seek to retire USAID's independent operation" immediately and "assess" whether to rehire some unknown number of officials to "assume the responsible administration of USAID's remaining life-saving and strategic aid programming," the memo said.
