GPS Disruption Reported In World's Most Critical Maritime Chokepoint

A new report has emerged stating that vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz are experiencing GPS interference, disrupting electronic navigation systems and forcing commercial ships to rely on manual or backup methods in one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on X late Sunday morning that it has "received reports from vessels experiencing GPS interference in the Strait of Hormuz area, with disruptions lasting several hours, affecting navigation systems and requiring vessels to rely on backup methods."

UKMTO provided no further information on the source of the GPS interference. However, if it was caused by a foreign adversary such as Iran, GPS interference in the critical maritime chokepoint would be considered a form of hybrid warfare.

GPS interference or spoofing falls into the domain of non-kinetic warfare—it doesn't involve firing weapons but can degrade vessel operations in the strait.

The incident occurred after Iran's president and the US agreed to continued nuclear talks on Saturday.

"We are negotiating, and we will negotiate, we are not after war but we do not fear any threat," President Masoud Pezeshkian said during a speech to the military broadcasted on state television.

The issue with GPS disruptions in the strait is that it's considered an energy superhighway for the global economy. About 20% of global oil (and about 30% of seaborne-traded oil) passes through the narrow stretch of water (approximately 17 to 20 million barrels of oil per day) that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Last year, analysts led by Tom Joyce, managing director and capital market strategist at MUFG, showed clients the critical maritime chokepoints across the Middle East, including the Suez Canal, the Bab-El Mandeb Strait, and the Strait of Hormuz. This note was published around the time Iran-backed Houthis were just getting started on their campaign to attack US and Israel-linked ships in the Southern Red Sea.

The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) began its annual nine-day meeting Monday on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, crying poor and doubting its ability to again meet crises like the coronavirus epidemic after U.S. funding cuts struck at the heart of the United Nations subsidiary’s finances.

AP reports Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been grappling with a response to the U.S. cuts as well as reduced outlays from other traditional Western donors who are favoring defense over humanitarian aid.

President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. was exiting the agency on the first day of his return to office in January.

Matthew Kavanagh, the director of Georgetown University’s center for Global Health Policy and Politics, said other countries have used the “U.S. disruption” — the cut in aid — “as cover to do their maneuvering, with many countries in Europe reducing aid.”

“The WHO faces an existential crisis that goes well beyond a budget gap to the question of whether this sort of multilateralism can succeed in addressing global health in this new era of nationalism and misinformation,” he said, the AP reported.

It is also grappling with countries questioning the W.H.O. and the efficacy of its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the run-up to the assembly, W.H.O. has been slashing cutting costs. Its management has presented a budget for the next two years at just under $4.3 billion, which is 22 percent less than originally planned — largely in response to Western funding cuts, the AP report notes.

A former Ethiopian health and foreign minister, Tedros announced a shake-up of top management that included the exit of key adviser Dr. Michael Ryan from the job as emergencies chief.

As Breitbart News reported, as the coronavirus pandemic first began picking up speed in 2020, Ryan indicate during a press conference that individuals infected with the Chinese virus should be removed from their homes and families to prevent further spread of the deadly disease.

He spoke in the wake of the W.H.O. clearing China free of responsibility for the deadly outbreak.

Tedros previously mourned the loss of U.S. funds and other assistance have left the W.H.O. with a salary gap of more than $500 million.

W.H.O. is “confident” it has commitments for 60 percent of funds for the next two-year budget cycle, but it faces a budget gap of $1.7 billion.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff offensive has led European officials to cut their growth forecasts for this year and next — even in a best-case scenario in which the highest rates on most goods could be negotiated away.

The forecast for this year for the 20 countries that use the euro currency was cut to 0.9% from the previous forecast in November of 1.3%, the European Union’s executive commission said Monday in its regular spring forecast.

The forecast for 2026 was cut to 1.4% from 1.6%.

One reason for the lower growth estimate was the stagnating economy in Germany, where growth is expected to be zero this year after two years of shrinking output. Germany’s economy is heavily dependent on exports but has faced strong headwinds from higher energy costs after the loss of Russian natural gas due to the invasion of Ukraine as well from lack of pro-growth infrastructure spending and competition from China in autos and industrial machinery.

The proposal for a 20% U.S. tariff, or import tax, on goods from Europe in addition to its suspension for 90 days have meant uncertainty “not seen since the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.

He said the European economy remained “resilient” and that the jobs market remained robust, with the commission predicting a fall in unemployment to a record low 5.7% next year.

And the risks are “tilted to the downside,” he said. One reason: The forecast assumes that the proposed 20% rate can be reduced through negotiations with Washington to the base tariff rate imposed on all countries of 10%.

While the EU’s top trade official, Maros Sefcovic, has spoken several times with administration officials it remains uncertain how willing Trump might be to reduce the rate. European officials have paused any retaliatory tariffs for 90 days and made a “zero for zero” offer in which each side would drop tariffs on industrial goods such as autos.

The forecast assumed that 25% tariffs on steel and autos from all countries will remain in place, as would exemptions on computer chips and pharmaceuticals.

The eurozone economy grew 0.3% in the first three months of the year, amid hopeful signs of a stronger upswing. But the mood was darkened just two days after the first quarter ended, when Trump on April 2 announced a slew of new, higher than expected tariffs on almost all US trading partners.

Mapped: NASA warns powerful solar flare hurtling towards Earth could trigger blackouts

A colossal X-class solar flare has burst from the Sun, triggering potent radio blackouts across vast areas of the globe - and experts are warning that more could be imminent as the active sunspot turns directly towards Earth.

The intense eruption originated from sunspot region AR4087 and reached its peak at 4:25am EDT (0825 GMT) on Tuesday (May 14), as reported by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

The powerful X2.7-class flare struck the daylight side of Earth with a wave of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation, causing R3-level radio disruptions across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, according to space.com.

Solar flares are classified by their strength - A, B, C, M and X - with each level signifying a tenfold increase in energy output. This flare's X2.7 rating makes it one of the strongest observed in recent months.

While Earth was not directly in the path of any potential coronal mass ejection (CME) from this flare - given that the sunspot region is still near the Sun's edge - scientists are keeping a close eye on developments.

CMEs are large explosions of solar plasma and magnetic field that can spark geomagnetic storms and even breath-taking auroras, especially if they collide with Earth's magnetic field.

Significantly, sunspot AR4087 is rotating towards Earth and has already shown signs of volatility. It has unleashed multiple flares within a few hours, including a strong M5.3-class flare just prior to the X2.7 eruption, reports the Express.

Vincent Ledvina, an aurora expert, raised alarms on X (formerly Twitter ), cautioning: "This is getting intense, especially as this active region turns closer into view.

This same AR just produced an M5.3 flare a few hours ago. What does this AR have planned over the next days ... we'll have to wait and see."

The recent X2.7-class solar flare is the most intense since March's X1.2 event from sunspot region AR4086, which is now moving out of sight.

The Sun's surge in activity has reignited worries about potential disruptions to communication, navigation systems, and satellites.

This solar eruption led to a swift ionisation of the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere, causing high-frequency radio signal disturbances for operators across vast areas.

Portugal’s populist anti-immigration Chega Party has scored its best ever election result with arecord vote share confirmed Monday that marked the end of the country’s two-party dominance.

Chega recorded the voting triumph in Portugal’s just-concluded snap parliamentary elections – the third in as many years.

The BBC reports Chega leader André Ventura said the “historic” result marked the end of two-party dominance in Portugalas voters moved to reject mass immigration plans touted by the current government.

Ventura’s campaignhad focussed on the issues of immigration and corruption, and Chega was helped by the fact this election and the previous one were both triggered by scandals involving the prime minister of the day.

Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos announced his resignation after his party finished in second and lost so many seats it ended up neck-and-neck with Chega.

Portugal’s governing Democratic Alliance (AD) won but fell short of an overall majority.

The final results showed the AD coalition won with 32 percent of the vote, followed by the Socialist Party at 23 percent.The Chega party comes in third with 22.56 percent.=

The tie between Chega and the Socialists could still be broken when votes from overseas are counted.

“The system has been shaken,” said Chega lawmaker Pedro Pinto, Politico reports. “And we represent a governing alternative.”

Portugal has been caught up in the rising European tide of populism with Chega surging into third place in last year’s election and repeating that triumph again.

The government, led by theSocial Democratsin an alliance with a smaller party, fellamid a controversy centred on potential conflicts of interest in the business dealings of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s family law firm.

Montenegro, who has ruled out any deal with Chega, said he hoped to form a minority government.

UK Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer continued his hardline rhetoric on migration over the weekend, admitting that the country has become “addicted to cheap” migrant workers to the detriment of young Britons.Yet the PM is reportedly on the cusp of a deal to open up more youth migration from the EU to Britain.

Despite the fervent backlash from the open borders wing of his left-wing Labour Party base, Prime Minister Starmer has doubled down on his tough talk on immigrationas he seeks to fend off the rising popularity of Nigel Farage’s populist Reform UK party.

Taking to social media on Saturday, the PM said: “For too long, Britain has been addicted to cheap overseas labour — while 1 in 8 of our own young people aren’t in education, employment or training.

“I’m putting our young people first, investing in skills they need and ending our dependence on foreign labour.”

“If you work here illegally or employ people who do, we’re coming for you. Illegal working raids are up 40%. And we won’t stop there,” Starmer added on Sunday.

=The comments come after the left-wing leader drew the ire of progressives in the establishment media and backbenchers of his own party, who accused Starmer of supposedly playing into the hands of the so-called “far-right”by admitting that mass migration has failed to deliver on its key promise of producing economic benefits to Britons and risked turning the nation into an “island of strangers” if continued.

However, though this marked a significant rhetorical change, undercutting the decades-long establishment narrative,Starmer’s government has faced accusations of only pursuing half measures to confront the issue.

Indeed, Labour’s “white paper” on immigration merely said that numbers could drop by 100,000 by the end of the decade,likely meaning that millions more foreigners will be imported into the country under his watch. Gross immigration has soared to over a million following the ‘Boris wave’ post-Brexit liberalisation of immigration under the so-called Conservatives, so a reduction of 100,000 from such an unusually high level will not make a meaningful difference to the forces of change on the British population.

Despite vowing to put “our young people first” on Saturday, Starmer is also reportedly set to bring Britain back into the EU’s “youth mobility scheme” as part of his so-called “Brexit reset” with the bloc. The scheme would allow EU migrants between the ages of 18 and 30 to stay in the UK for up to three years.

While the government is reportedly seeking to put an annual cap on the number of those allowed in,critics have warned that it will merely exacerbate the issues of young Britons, who have faced particular struggles getting on the property ladder amid the migrant-exacerbated housing crisis.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “This scheme could open the floodgates to tens of thousands or more flooding into the country, including people who recently entered Europe illegally and then got citizenship.”

“Last week, Starmer said he wanted to clamp down on immigration, but he’s now on the verge of throwing open the doors. He is a disingenuous charlatan when it comes to our border security.”

Meanwhile, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, whose party has soared to the top of the polls amid growing anger over the government’s failures to crack down on immigration, has vowed to scrap Starmer’s EU “reset” if he is elected as the next prime minister.

“The whole thing is an abject surrender from Starmer and politically, something he will come to regret,” he toldThe Telegraph.

“A Reform government would undo all of this with legislation. We’d tell the EU that any agreements are no longer legally bindingon the UK, because a general election has said so. ==That’s what Brexit was all about. It was about us governing ourselves, well or badly.”=

NASA has managed to get men on the moon, rovers on Mars, and probes around Saturn's rings.

But it seems the space agency is yet to master how to make an appetising cheeseburger in space.

Jonny Kim, a NASA astronaut on board the International Space Station (ISS) has shared a photo of a 'cheeseburger' floating in zero-gravity.

Unlike the fast-food treats that many of us enjoy here on solid ground, it doesn't look very appetising.

Despite being 260 miles above the nearest grocery store, his snack impressively consisted of five ingredients.

This includes 'wheat snack bread' as the bun, a beef steak as the burger, and congealed cheese spread as the cheese.

'I miss cooking for my family,' the astronaut, who has been on board the ISS since April 8, tweeted.

He added: 'But this hits the spot in its own way.'

Kim launched to the ISS on the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft on April 8, 2025, and is set to spend eight months on board the floating space station.

Since his arrival, Kim has been keeping his fans on X updated on his experiences - including his meals.

'If you've lived on MREs [ready-to-eat meals], you've probably tried some creative field recipes, he tweeted.

'Here is a twist on the ranger burger, one of my favorites.'

With limited resources on board the ISS, Kim had to get pretty creative with his burger.

'Beef steak, wheat snack bread, cheese spread as both topping and glue, potatoes au gratin layered in the middle, and a generous slather of gochujang red pepper paste from a care package on the SpX-32 Cargo Dragon,' he explained, alongside pictures of his creation.

While the burger doesn't look particularly appetising, several fans have applauded his efforts.

'In outer space while inventing new lunchables! Keep up the good work,' one user replied.

Another added: 'Thank you for sharing this tasty looking sandwich and views from your adventures in space thus far!

'Lots of respect and admiration.'

This isn't the first time an astronaut has attempted to create a cheeseburger in space.

Back in 2015, astronaut Terry Virts tweeted a photo of a strange-looking 'space cheeseburger' wrapped in a tortilla.

'Beef patties, Russian mustard, tomato paste, cheese paste and tortilla. VERY TASTY!' the Baltimore-born astronaut wrote alongside his post.

Moscow values Washington’s mediation efforts in the settlement of the conflict, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Russia remains open to achieving its goals in the Ukraine conflict through peaceful means, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

Peskov, speaking before President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump,expressed appreciation for Washington’s mediation efforts, noting that “if it really helps us achieve our goals by peaceful means, that would certainly be preferable.”

He also recalled that Putin’s 2021 proposal to address Russian security concerns over NATO expansion was rejected by the US-led alliance and then-President Joe Biden’s administration.

Moscow’s stated objectives include keeping Ukraine out of NATO, ending Kiev’s policies that it considers discriminatory against ethnic Russians, and curbing the influence of extreme Ukrainian nationalist groups.

In a recent interview, Putin said Moscow wants to “eliminate the causes of this crisis, create conditions for long-term sustainable peace and ensure the security of the Russian state and the interests of our people” in former Ukrainian territories where people voted to join Russia following the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev.

Last week, Russian and Ukrainian representatives held their first direct talks since 2022, when Kiev backed out of a proposed peace deal that had been agreed in principle by both sides in Istanbul. The U-turn was influenced by the then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, according to Ukraine’s lead negotiator David Arakhamia.

The latest round of Istanbul negotiations has led to a proposal for the largest prisoner exchange between the two countriesand a pledge to continue dialogue.

Trump has claimed that he alone can broker peace between Russia and Ukraine and suggested that a breakthrough could come as early as this week, following his conversation with Putin.

From President John F. Kennedy’s iconic call to “go to the Moon, not because it is easy” to President Barack Obama’s forward-looking directive to use commercial rides to orbit for cargo and crew, Democrats have historically been strong supporters of the space program.

Unfortunately, in the years since Obama left office, Democrats have dropped the ball on the matter. Republicans have used it to rile up their base with calls to showcase American superiority, and beat China on the off-world stage.

It’s not that Democratic members are silent on space. We still see lawmakers on the left celebrating major milestones in the space program, and vocally supporting the traditionally Democratic positions of promoting science funding and workforce development.

These are important things to support. But they’re a small subset of space-related topics that require attention as the space industry rapidly transforms.

Lopsided interest: A quick glance at space-related bills introduced last Congress tells a clear story: Democrats led space legislation 30% less often than Republicans, and Democrats aren’t engaging on the breadth of topics Republicans have laid out proposals for.

That lack of action is driving an innovative, tech-focused population away from the Democratic Party.

At the New Directions for Democrats summit in late April, Rep. George Whitesides (D-CA) remarked that he had been told many startups haven’t heard pro-innovation messages from Democrats for some time.

As a result, many tech bros and defense startups—space-related businesses and executives included—are backing Republicans.

In an op-ed in The Hill, economist Alexander Salter put it simply when he said, “the parties do not have equally impressive recent records on space policy—Republicans have accomplished much more.”

Salter cited accomplishments from Trump’s first term—including more than half a dozen directives ranging from space traffic management, to establishing the Space Force.

Money matters: So, why should Democrats who aren’t space nerds like Whitesides and me care? With the cost of eggs soaring to the Kármán Line, why should people care about the Moon?

Polls show that American voters view Democrats generally as weaker on the economy. The economy was a major contributor to the walloping loss for the party during the last election.

Condemnation of Trump’s economic chaos isn’t enough—voters want to see Democrats present their own economic agenda.

The space industry provides a fantastic opening to talk about what that agenda can and should look like.

A pro-economy space policy: Trump’s tariffs, and broader efforts to try to bring manufacturing back to the US by raising the prices Americans pay on everyday goods, are not the answer.

Kremlin reveals timing for Putin-Trump call

The conversation is scheduled for 5pm Moscow time and will be based on the results of recent talks in Istanbul, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump,at 5pm Moscow time (2pm GMT) on Monday, the Kremlin has confirmed.

The upcoming conversation was initially announced by Trump on Saturday. He said the discussion would focus on “stopping the ‘bloodbath’” between Russia and Ukraine, along with trade issues. He also noted plans to speak with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and NATO leaders afterward, expressing hope that a “productive day” would lead to a ceasefire.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the highly anticipated call,Peskov described talks with Trump as “important” in light of the recent Turkish-mediated meeting between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul – their first direct peace talks since 2022.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post has reported, citing a US official familiar with the matter, thatZelensky and his top aides are concerned that the Trump-Putin phone call could “deliver a fait accompli that Ukraine can’t accept,” with the Ukrainian leader meeting Vice President J.D. Vance to prevent that from happening.

Mysterious white streak spotted over US skies during surprise aurora storm. What was it?

The night sky offered lucky skywatchers an unexpected double feature on May 17 — a surprise geomagnetic storm and a mysterious white plume slicing through the auroras.

The moderate (G2 class) geomagnetic storm came as quite a surprise, kicking off early Friday (May 16) after Earth caught the glancing blow of a coronal mass ejection (CME).

The CME was launched during a colossal filament eruption on May 12 from the sun's northern hemisphere. Initially expected to miss Earth, the "bird-wing" ejecta was wider than predicted, with some of the material striking Earth 4 days after it left the sun.

But the real head-turner came when a streak of bright white light lit up the sky over Colorado and other parts of the U.S.

At first glance, you could be mistaken for thinking it was a strange version of STEVE — a rare atmospheric phenomenon that can accompany the northern lights. But skywatchers quickly realized it was something entirely different.

"The aurora was rippling low on the northern horizon when suddenly a bright streak of light, reminiscent of a rocket re-entry, appeared high in the sky and flowed down to the horizon," photographer Mike Lewinski told Spaceweather.com.

Lewinski captured the entire event unfolding in the skies above Crestone, Colorado.

The culprit? A recent rocket launch. Roughly an hour earlier, Chinese company Landscape had launched its Zhuque-2E methane-fueled rocket from Site 96 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (JSLC), in China.

It carried six satellites into orbit, including a radar spacecraft and space science payload. The streak was likely from a de-orbit or circularization burn, possibly related to satellite deployment, according to Spaceweather.com.

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell took to X to confirm that the white streak of light was the result of the Zhuque-2 upper stage passing over the U.S. Four Corners area.

McDowell further explained that the white streak was caused by the fuel dump from the upper stage at about 155 miles (250 kilometers) altitude.

Aurora photographer Derick Wilson also captured the bright white streak above Farmington, New Mexico.

"The #aurora was visual but colorless... then the brightest sight I've ever seen in the night sky appeared overhead!" Wilson wrote in a post on X.

Photographer Tyler Schlitt captured the white plume from southern Kansas, U.S. Schlitt, like many, had originally thought STEVE had appeared. But soon learned it was something entirely different.

"Learning that it’s a rocket launch yet again from China is wild! One year ago and a few day I saw the same thing and was unsure but that one seem more of a rocket dump this one fell extremely close," Schlitt wrote in an X post comment.

It's not the first time a rocket launch has left skywatchers scratching their heads.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets, for instance, have created dazzling spiral patterns that swirl across the sky — strange sights that often spark confusion and awe, especially for first-time viewers who might mistake them for something truly otherworldly.

Abstract

On May 26, 2011, only hours before three provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act were scheduled to expire, Congress passed an extension. For days, the White House had someone ready to fly to Europe with the legislation in hand for the President to sign, but Congress had been tardy. It seemed quite important to the White House that none of these provisions lapse for any length of time, even the relatively short time it would take to fly from Washington to France. With this urgency as a backdrop, the President was awakened at 5:45 a.m. Central European Time so he could authorize a first: phone a White House staffer in Washington, D.C., and instruct him to use an auto-pen to sign the bill. No President had ever had anyone else sign on his behalf, and certainly no President had ever ordered the use of an auto-pen to inscribe his signature on a bill when away from the White House. This Article explores multiple facets of the President’s use of a proxy signature to sign legislation.

The state of the law surrounding proxy signatures has remained amazingly constant through both English and American history. The proxy and the principal must be present together when a proxy signature is utilized for a high-value transaction. This was the rock-solid law when the constitution was written.

No one seems focused on the presence requirement: not the President, nor the Republican House members who complained to the President, nor the numerous legal commentators and scholars that we have heard from since the auto-pen signing occurred. The use of the auto-pen, itself unproblematic, seems to have eclipsed the more important issue of whether the president was present when it was used.

By definition, if a non-presence proxy signature is affixed to a bill, then time is of the essence. When time is of the essence, the consequences of a voided signature are never greater. Since the President has roughly twelve days to sign a bill, a non-presence proxy signature could produce one of two unintended consequences. At best, it would produce a twelve-day period during which the new legislation would not be in effect. At worst, if Congress is not in session at the end of the twelve-day period, it would amount to a pocket veto. Neither case is consistent with well-ordered government.

In sum, the President’s use of the auto-pen (or even a human being) to sign a bill outside of the President’s presence is unconstitutional. This establishes a dangerous precedent, one which every thinking lawyer in Washington politics seemed to have overlooked. Let the auto-pen episode not be a precedent for this or any other President to follow. The Constitution does not allow for shortcuts.

14,000 years ago, the most powerful solar storm ever recorded hit Earth. 'This event establishes a new worst-case scenario'

An extreme solar storm hit Earth some 14,300 years ago, more powerful than any other such event known in human history, a new analysis of radiocarbon data has revealed.

The solar storm, the only known to have taken place in the last Ice Age, long eluded scientists as they lacked appropriate models for interpreting radiocarbon data from glacial climate conditions.

But a new study by a team from the Oulu University in Finland has taken a stab at the measurement interpretation with eye-opening results.

Using a novel chemistry-climate model, the team found that the marked spike in the carbon-14 isotope detected in fossilized tree rings was caused by a solar storm more than 500 times as powerful as the 2003 Halloween Solar Storm, which was the most intense in modern history.

Solar storms generate major disruptions to Earth's magnetic field and dump enormous quantities of charged particles into the planet's atmosphere.

These particles, mostly high-energy protons, boost the natural levels of carbon-14 — a radioactive isotope of carbon also known as radiocarbon.

Carbon 14 is produced by interactions of nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere with cosmic rays. Scientists can use radiocarbon concentrations to date organic materials as the isotopes decay over time.

In 2023, a major spike in radiocarbon concentrations in fossilized tree rings was discovered, indicating a major solar storm must have taken place as the last ice age was drawing to an end.

The new study was finally able to precisely assess the magnitude of that solar storm and date it more accurately.

The scientists believe that solar storm took place between January and April in the year 12,350 BC, likely dazzling the hundreds of thousands of mammoth hunters who lived in Europe at that time with the most awe-inspiring aurora borealis.

"The ancient event in 12,350 BC is the only known extreme solar particle event outside of the Holocene epoch, the past approximately 12,000 years of stable warm climate," Kseniia Golubenko, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu and lead author of the new study, said in a statement.

"Our new model lifts the existing limitation to the Holocene and extends our ability to analyze radiocarbon data even for glacial climate conditions."

Scientists previously studied records of five other radiocarbon spikes found in tree ring data, which they attributed to powerful solar storms that had taken place in 994 AD, 775 AD, 663 BC, 5259 BC and 7176 BC.

The strongest of these "Holocene" events was the 775 AD solar storm, which pummeled Earth at a time when Charles the Great reigned over the post-Roman Frankish empire in medieval Europe.

Few written records have been preserved depicting that storm, but historians found hits of it in ancient Chinese and Anglo-Saxon chronicles.

The recently analyzed storm of 12,350 BC was even stronger, having deposited about 18% more charged particles into the atmosphere, the study reveals.

The scope of these enormous solar storms is important to understand for technology experts in the 21st century, which is much more vulnerable to the whims of the sun due to society's dependence on electronic systems and space technologies.

"This event establishes a new worst-case scenario," Golubenko said. "Understanding its scale is critical for evaluating the risks posed by future solar storms to modern infrastructure like satellites, power grids, and communication systems."

Other solar storms in recent history show us just how much damage the sun's outbursts can cause here on Earth. The 1859 Carrington Event took down telegraph wires all over the world.

The Halloween Storm of 2003, which was ten times weaker, caused chaos in Earth's orbit as satellites' trajectories changed unpredictably in the atmosphere which was suddenly much more dense due to interactions with charged particles from the sun.

The Gannon Storm of 2024, similar in strength to the Halloween Storm, raised concerns of space sustainability experts as it triggered a "mass migration of satellites" when thousands of spacecraft began firing their thrusters to make up for altitude loss caused by atmospheric density changes.

A storm as ferocious as the one of 12,350 BC would likely cause complete mayhem if it were to strike Earth and its surrounding space today.

That’s not just any surplus — it’s the first monthly surplus of fiscal year 2025 (which began in October 2024), and the second-largest monthly surplus in U.S. history, behind only April 2022’s $308.2 billion surplus.

Does that mean President Trump’s plan is working?

According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the surplus was driven by “large individual tax deposits,” with April being the due date for final payments on prior-year taxes and the first installment of quarterly estimated taxes for many individuals and businesses.

Individual income taxes alone brought in $537 billion — by far the biggest contributor to government revenue for April. Social insurance and retirement receipts followed at $184 billion, while corporate income taxes added $94 billion.

Customs duties — a reflection of Trump’s tariffs — generated $15.6 billion in April, more than double the $6.3 billion collected during the same month last year. Still, tariff revenue remains modest compared to other major contributors.

On the spending side, the biggest outlay for the month was Social Security at $132 billion, followed by $89 billion in net interest, $82 billion for Medicare, $76 billion for health and $70 billion for national defense.

Despite the hefty surplus, one strong month isn’t enough to reverse the broader fiscal trend. From October 1 through April 30, the U.S. government brought in $3.110 trillion in revenue but spent $4.159 trillion — resulting in a $1.049 trillion deficit for the fiscal year so far.

So it’s no surprise the national debt continues to soar. As of this writing, the total outstanding debt of the U.S. government sits at a staggering $36.212 trillion.

National Air and Space Museum to reveal more renovated galleries on July 28

From John Glenn's Friendship 7 to Blue Origin's New Shepard, space capsules and more are set to return to or debut on display with the opening of five "reimagined" galleries at the National Air and Space Museum this summer.

As part of a still on-going, seven-year renovation of the museum's flagship building in Washington, the Smithsonian has announced that it is ready to premiere more of its exhibitions following the reveal of eight of its halls on the building's west end in 2022.

The next launch, scheduled for July 28, includes two galleries highlighting some of the most historic and newest space artifacts in the national collection.

The Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall, which visitors will first see after proceeding through the museum's newly-redesigned Jefferson Drive entrance along the National Mall showcases some of the museum's most iconic objects, including Glenn's Mercury spacecraft and an Apollo lunar module configured to appear as Apollo 11's "Eagle" looked in 1969 when it landed the first humans on the moon.

The displays in Milestones were the first to be redesigned in 2016 — in time for the museum's 40th anniversary — but then the hall was closed and the artifacts were removed again so that the area itself could be renovated.

Milestones' exhibits also include a North American X-15 rocket plane, the Gemini 4 capsule from which astronaut Ed White performed the first American spacewalk in 1965 and a moon rock that the public can touch.

Also opening on July 28 will be the new "Futures in Space" exhibition, which takes over the location of the relocated "How Things Fly," next to the Milestones of Flight Hall.

"Futures" will display artifacts new to the building to address topics like "who decides who goes to space?" and "why do we go?"

Debuting with Futures in Space are a Virgin Galactic "RocketMotorTwo" engine that powered pilots Mark Stucky and Frederick "CJ" Sturckow into space on a suborbital test flight on board the SpaceShipTwo "VSS Unity" in 2018 and an aluminum grid fin that helped SpaceX land a Falcon 9 rocket's first stage in 2017.

Also new is a mockup of Blue Origin's New Shepard capsule, a pressurized cabin used to fly cargo and clients beyond the boundary separating Earth and space.

Jeff Bezos, the company's billionaire founder and its first passenger, has pledged to replace the replica with a flown capsule once it has retired from flying.

Other areas of the National Air and Space Museum reopening at the same time include three aviation-themed halls — "Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight," "World War I: The Birth of Military Aviation" and the Allan and Shelley Holt Innovations Gallery — and the the Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater.

The remaining eight galleries still under renovation are scheduled to open on July 1, 2026, the 50th anniversary of the National Air and Space Museum and in time for the United States' 250th anniversary. Among them are the interactive

"At Home in Space," which will engage visitors in how humans live and work in space and venture beyond Earth orbit, and "RTX Living in the Space Age Hall," revealing how innovations in space technology have transformed our lives on Earth.

Likewise, the "National Science Foundation Discovering Our Universe" exhibition will show how advancements in astronomical tools changed our understanding of the universe.

Also opening next year, wrapping up the renovations, are the "Textron How Things Fly," "Jay I. Kislak World War II in the Air" and "Modern Military Aviation" galleries, as well as the "Flight and the Arts Center."

Free timed-entry passes are required to visit. Passes for the July 28 opening and beyond will be available on the National Air and Space Museum website June 13.

Voyager Technologies files to go public

Space and defense company Voyager Technologies has filed paperwork to go public, revealing details about the company’s finances and plans for its largest project.

Voyager filed a preliminary prospectus for its planned initial public offering (IPO) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission May 16. The company previously confidentially filed plans for its IPO with the SEC.

The draft prospectus does not yet disclose how many shares the company plans to sell or the amount the company expects to raise in the IPO. It does, though, offer financial details about Voyager.

The company reported $144.2 million in revenue in 2024 and a net loss of $65.6 million, versus $136.1 million in revenue and a net loss of $25.2 million in 2023.

The company also reported revenue of $34.5 million in the first quarter of 2025, and a net loss of $27.9 million.

The company, previously known as Voyager Space, rebranded as Voyager Technologies in January, around the time of its confidential IPO filing, to emphasize a focus on defense technologies.

It said in its prospectus that its revenue was split 50-50 between its defense and space work in 2024, although defense work accounts for two-thirds of its revenue in the first quarter of this year.

The company’s largest single customer, though, is NASA, which accounted for a quarter of its revenue in 2024 and a fifth of its revenue in the first quarter of this year. Other major customers include Lockheed Martin, Airbus and the U.S. Air Force.

Voyager’s highest profile project is Starlab, a commercial space station. The company received a funded Space Act Agreement from NASA to support initial design work on the station, currently worth $217.5 million with $70.3 million yet to be paid.

(Voyager said the agreement is not counted as revenue in its financial documents in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.)

Starlab is now being developed by the Starlab Space joint venture, created by Voyager in 2023 as it brought in other partners to support work on the station.

Voyager previously said it had a majority stake in the joint venture but did not disclose its size. According to the prospectus, as of the end of March Voyager held 67% of Starlab Space and Airbus Defence and Space 30.5%.

The remainder was held by MDA Space, Mitsubishi and Palantir.

The NASA award covers only initial work on Starlab, and the company will have to compete for a second phase of NASA’s Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development program that will offer additional funding for station development.

Voyager revealed in the prospectus that it projects Starlab to cost $2.8 billion to $3.3 billion to develop.

In addition to NASA funding, Voyager said it expects to fund Starlab through customers making advance payments for use of the station as well as equity and project-based financing.

Starlab is planned to launch in 2029, with the entire station deployed on a single SpaceX Starship launch. Voyager said it many later add modules to Starlab or deploy additional stations, projecting that Starlab will be core to the company’s finances.

“With an estimated useful life of thirty years, we anticipate Starlab will have an infrastructure-like financial profile and will generate a significant portion of our revenue, profitability and cash flows once launched and fully operational,” the company stated.

The prospectus also revealed another acquisition by Voyager. The company disclosed that on May 2 it acquired Optical Physics Company for $10.7 million in cash and stock.

The company develops star trackers and other optical systems for space applications. Voyager said it will incorporate Optical Physics Company into its defense and national security business unit “and was a strategic acquisition for program integration.”

Professor Malcolm Macdonald has been named as President Elect of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAes), the oldest aeronautical society in the world, and the only professional body dedicated to the entire aerospace community.

He will take up the post of President in May 2026

The space expert is Director of the Centre for Signal and Image Processing (CeSIP), and of the Centre’s Applied Space Technology Laboratory at the University of Strathclyde.

Founded in 1866, and originally known as the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain, RAeS now has more than 26,000 members with international branches throughout the world and regional divisions as far afield as Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa.

The President of the Society provides leadership of the Council and of the Society in pursuit of its objectives, and has a pivotal role upholding the values, and reputation.

The President is also instrumental in influencing the global standing of the Society in furthering the advancement of aeronautical art, science and engineering.

President Donald Trump on Sunday amplified a social media post insinuating that former President Barack Obama should face a “military tribunal” ― and a public one at that.

On Truth Social, Trump shared an entry from a right-wing X user with a photo of Trump and Obama accompanied by the caption: “ALL ROADS LEAD TO OBAMA... RETRUTH IF YOU WANT PUBLIC MILITARY TRIBUNALS.”

Trump didn’t comment on the post. But the original poster’s apparentQAnonadherence in their X profile description spotlighted the president’s willingness to give voice to the most extreme parts of his base.

Trump’s specific reason for advancing such a suggestion isn’t clear. He has repeatedly questioned Obama’s American birth and accused Obama of treason for spying on his 2016 campaign without proof. Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton that year to succeed Obama in the White House.

Military tribunals are generally used to try service members accused of serious offenses or suspected terrorists, in addition to civilians who allegedly commit crimes that compromise national security.

Trump also advanced accusatorytakes on ex-FBI Director James Comey’s social media photo of seashells on the beach with the message “86 47,” which resulted in Comey being interviewed by the Secret Service. Trump and several Republicans accused Comey of calling for his assassination.

Amritsar: The Indian Army on Monday showed a demonstration of how Indian air defence systems, including the Akash missile system, saved the holiest shrine of Sikhism, the Golden Temple, here and cities of Punjab from Pakistani missile and drone attacks during Operation Sindoor.

The Army also showed here debris from intercepted Pakistani missiles and drones.

Major General Kartik C Seshadri, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 15th Infantry Division, said Pakistan attempted to target the Golden Temple in Amritsar with drones and missiles on the intervening night of May 7-8 in retaliation against India’s strikes on nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

He said Pakistan had no legitimate military targets and was expected to strike civilian and religious sites in India.

“We were fully prepared since we had anticipated this, and our braveheart and alert army air defence gunners thwarted Pakistan Army’s nefarious designs and shot down all drones and missiles targeted at the Golden Temple,” the officer was quoted as saying.

Amit Malviya, the BJP’s National Information and Technology Department, wrote on X, “The Indian Army’s confirmation of drone and missile attacks targeting the Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) is both shocking and deeply disturbing.”

“It underscores the true intent of Pakistan’s military establishment and its proxies — to sow chaos and hurt the very soul of India.

“No true Sikh, whose faith and identity are rooted in justice, sacrifice, and love for the nation, would ever align with or support a state like Pakistan, which has time and again shown itself to be an enemy of peace, faith, and humanity. Targeting the holiest shrine of Sikhism exposes the moral and strategic bankruptcy of Pakistan’s actions.

“Sikhs across the world should see this for what it is: an attack not just on a religious site, but on the very fabric of India’s unity and the sanctity of Sikh heritage,” Malviya added.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Metal Industries Research and Development Centre developed a smart drone for fish detection with support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Taiwan Fishermen’s Association Chair Hsieh Lung-yin (謝龍隱) said the drone can reduce fishing costs, minimize the risk of injuries and property damage, and help crews reach catch targets more quickly, per CNA.

According to ITRI, the drone is a vertical takeoff and landing fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle with a flight time of up to 1.5 hours and a range of over 30 km. The agency added that the drone is also resistant to rain, dust, and corrosion.

Additionally, ITRI developed a system that can plan drone flight paths and deploy up to four drones for simultaneous patrols.

While in flight, onboard cameras transmit real-time images back to the system, ITRI said. When a drone detects a fish school, the system will recall the drone and direct it back to the fishing vessel, guiding the crew to the fishing location.

MIRDC added that it plans to collaborate with domestic manufacturers, system integrators, and service providers to conduct drone testing this year.

ITRI said that to improve fish-finding efficiency, crews typically place sensor-equipped electronic buoys in areas where fish schools migrate.

These buoys transmit precise location data to the captain. However, it noted the buoys are vulnerable to sabotage by competitors.

Hsieh said that in the past, most fishing vessels relied on radar and lookouts to locate fish schools, which limited their range.

Since the introduction of helicopters for spotting fish, the aerial view has greatly expanded the search area, leading to a 30% increase in the annual catch.

However, maintaining a helicopter and hiring onboard crew costs around NT$20 million (US$620,000) annually, Hsieh said.

He added that helicopters generate significant carbon emissions due to fuel consumption and pose high operational risks, including the possibility of crashing into the sea due to mechanical failure.

The Russian and US presidents spoke on phone for over two hours

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with his US counterpart, Donald Trump. The conversation on Monday focused on the Ukraine conflict and a possible ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.

The phone call was initially announced by Trump on Saturday. The US president said the discussion will focus on “stopping the ‘bloodbath’” between Russia and Ukraine, as well as on bilateral trade issues.

A NEW Chinese drone carrier that can launch deadly swarms against enemy targets could take to the skies within days.

This unmanned "drone mother ship" is expected to take off for its first mission as part of a terrifying drive to boost the Chinese air force's combat capabilities.

Named Jiu Tian - meaning "nine heavens" - this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) would add to China's ability to "swarm" enemies.

This tactic involves releasing vast swarms of drones that work together to overwhelm enemy air defence systems.

A video widely circulated on X shows a visualisation of the aircraft's capabilities - demonstrating its ability to release vast swarms of deadly drones.

China's state broadcaster CCTV confirmed its inaugural mission on Monday.

The jet-powered drone will start by undergoing a series of tests before it is fully deployed by the Chinese air force.

Boasting a carrying capacity of up to six tonnes of ammunition and small-sized drones, the UAV has a maximum range of 4,350 miles and altitude of 50,000 feet.

Swarms of drones, including kamikaze UAVs, can be released from both sides of the aircraft's belly.

Terrifyingly, it is reportedly able to fly above many medium-range defence systems currently deployed around the world.

The deadly machine is capable of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assignments - as well as electronic warfare.

It was unveiled to the world at the Zhuhai airshow in China's southern Guangdong province last November.

Jiu Tian is the latest addition to China's growing supply of advanced drone technology as UAVs become increasingly critical in modern battlefields.

The drone has a maximum take-off weight of 16 tonnes and a wingspan of 25 metres.

It is seen as a rival to American drone models such as the RQ-4 Global Hawk and the MQ-9 Reaper, according to the South China Morning Post.

The Chinese aircraft was designed by the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China and built by Xian Chida Aircraft Parts Manufacturing.

The manufacturer says that Jiu Tian's design allows it to carry out various functions such as high-security transport, border defence, emergency rescue and more.

It comes as China has sought to ramp up its military capabilities in recent years.

This has not just been limited to drones, with China also working to build several vast aircraft carriers over the past decade.

China's military buildup has been watched warily around the world, as Beijing has long refused to rule out attempting to annex Taiwan by force.

China has frequently carried out naval drills in the Taiwan Strait - which are widely seen as preparation for a potential invasion.

Taiwan, known diplomatically as the Republic of China, has never been controlled by the Beijing-led People's Republic of China.

But Chinese President Xi Jinping, who sees Taiwan as a breakaway province, has vowed to bring the island under Beijing's control.

Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te recently said: "Eighty years after the end of the European war, the message of history is clear.

"Today, 80 years later, we share the same values ​​and face similar challenges as many of the democracies that participated in the European war."

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday gave the Trump administration the green light to revoke special legal protections for thousands of Venezuelan immigrants, which could pave the way for them to be deported.

The high court granted an emergency application filed by the administration, meaning officials can move forward with reversing a decision made at the tail end of the Biden administration to extend protections for more than 300,000 Venezuelans under the federal Temporary Protected Status program.

The brief order noted that liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson would have denied the application. Litigation will now continue in lower courts.

As a result of political instability in Venezuela, the Biden administration in March 2021 said Venezuelans were eligible for temporary protected status under the federal program that has existed since 1990 to provide humanitarian relief to people from countries reeling from war, natural disasters or other catastrophes.

People accepted into the program have legal status in the United States and can get work authorization for up to 18 months, subject to extensions.

At issue before the Supreme Court was a subsequent designation made in October 2023 and extended in January just before Donald Trump took office. It is set to expire in October 2026.

In February, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem sought to unwind those determinations, meaning the protections would expire this year instead.

California-based U.S. District Judge Edward Chen blocked the move, citing concerns that the decision was based in part on racial animus.

Noem's actions meant the affected immigrants face "possible imminent deportation," he wrote.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer wrote in the administration's emergency application that the courts could not review Noem's decision.

The Office of the Russian Prosecutor General has banned Amnesty International, the London-based non-governmental organization (NGO), accusing it of Russophobia and support for the Ukrainian military.

An official statement on Monday said thatwhile the “organization positions itself as an active champion of human rights throughout the world,”its headquarters in the British capitalhave turned into a “center for preparing global Russophobic projects, paid for by accomplices of the Kiev regime.”

“Members of the organization support extremist organizations and finance foreign agents’ activities,” the Prosecutor General’s Office claimed.

Amnesty has been actively working toward “increasing military confrontation” since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.Russian prosecutors have accused the NGO of whitewashing Ukrainian war crimes, calling for more financial support for Kiev and the economic isolation of Moscow.

Last month, Moscow banned US-based NGO Hope Harbor Society for providing financial support for the Ukrainian military as well as the coordination of anti-Russian protests in the US and other countries.

In early April, the Elton John AIDS Foundation was designated as 'undesirable' in Russia after being accused of promoting pro-LGBTQ agenda in the country.

Organizations with such a designation are banned from operating in Russia, and residents or companies may face legal penalties for providing financial or other forms of support to them.

TheRussian Justice Ministry currently lists more than 200 such entities, including major Western influence groups such as George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, the US-based German Marshall Fund, and the pro-NATO Atlantic Council.

The Ukrainian military said Monday that the Security Service of Ukraine attacked a Russian facility in the Black Sea with the use of drones.

The Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU, posted to Telegram Monday that "with the help of surface and air drones,' it destroyed "enemy radars and warehouses" built on gas production platforms.

The post also included a video of the attack that showed the approach of the drones from a drone's point of view before a long-distance view of an explosion on the Russian structure.

"Within one special operation, SBU specialists used two types of drones that demonstrated the effectiveness of paired work," The SBU said.

The assault was carried out by the 13th Main Directorate of the SBU's Military Counter-Intelligence Department and used both aerial and naval drones to target what the Telegram post described as "Russian military infrastructure placed on Ukrainian offshore drilling rigs," known as the Boyko towers.

A Russian Neva radar system, stored supplies and living quarters were reportedly destroyed in the attack.

The attack destroyed a Russian Neva-B radar system used for monitoring aerial and surface activity, as well as supply storage and living quarters on the platform, the SBU reported.

Neva-B radar systems can track as many as 200 targets at one time and is intended to warn of incoming attacks on infrastructure.

The SBU purports that through the use of drones, it has so far been able to attack 11 Russian warships and the "Crimean Bridge," a reference to the Kerch Strait Bridge, which linked Crimea to the Russian mainland and was attacked by Ukraine in October of 2022.

"We once again reminded the enemy that [there is no place for Russian rubbish] in the Black Sea," the Security Service of Ukraine added.

(AL-BUTANA) – Nine people, including seven military personnel, were killed and 14 others injured when a drone attacked a camp belonging to the Sudan Shield Forces in the Al-Butana plain area on Sunday, the group said.

The Sudan Shield Forces, which are based in the Al-Butana areas of Al-Jazirah and Gedaref states, fight alongside the Sudanese army.

Their commander, Abu Agla Keikel, defected from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October 2024, a move that helped the army and its allies regain control of Al-Jazirah state and most of Khartoum state.

A statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Sudan Shield Forces said the drone attack targeted facilities at their camp at Jabal Al-Abaytor in central Al-Butana.

The statement said seven soldiers were killed and 14 others wounded. The group also published a list naming nine individuals who died in the attack.

The strike on the Sudan Shield Forces camp is believed to be the first of its kind against the group. It follows a pattern of drone attacks attributed to the RSF against military and civilian targets across Sudan since the start of the year.

RSF drone attacks have damaged strategic oil depots in several states, including Port Sudan, the temporary administrative capital. Such attacks have also hit civilian and military airports, power stations and water facilities.
