What Are Ceramides?

This important skin care ingredient helps protect your skin and keep it moisturized

Dermatologist Amy Kassouf, MD, explains what ceramides are, why they’re so important for your skin and what to look for when you’re buying a moisturizer that includes them.

What are ceramides?

Ceramides (pronounced “sair-uh-mydes”) are fats or lipids that make up about 50% of your epidermis, which is the outer layer of your skin.

“Natural ceramides are those found in the skin of humans and other animals,” explains Dr. Kassouf. “Synthetic ceramides are human-made and commonly used in skin care products.”

As you age, your skin can’t replenish its natural ceramides as quickly as it did when you were younger. That’s why synthetic ceramides are added to moisturizers, serums and other products — to give your skin the boost it needs.

Types of ceramides

There are 12 types of ceramides, but these are the three most common ones typically found in over-the-counter serums, moisturizers, lotions, toners and creams:

Ceramide 1, or ceramide EOS

Ceramide 3, or ceramide NP

Ceramide 6-II, or ceramide AP

When it comes to ceramides for skin health, many products advertise front and center that they feature ceramides. You can also check ingredient labels.

Ceramide benefits

So, what do ceramides do for skin? Here’s how they can help.

Replenishes your skin barrier

Your skin barrier is your top layer of skin, made up of dead cells, proteins, fats and lipids, including natural ceramides.

“Ceramides are part fatty acid and part amino acid and are able to be the grout that keeps the building blocks of the skin together and functioning as a barrier between the inside and outside world,” explains Dr. Kassouf. “Using skin care products with added ceramides can restore optimal levels of these lipids.”

Locks in moisture

Keeping your skin moisturized is important for everyone, but it becomes especially critical as you age. With time, your skin becomes thinner and less elastic, which causes it to lose moisture more easily than in your younger years.

But ceramides help lock in moisture to keep your skin soft and plump.

“Aging and certain skin conditions, like eczema, involve decreased ceramide levels, which can result in dehydrated or itchy skin,” shares Dr. Kassouf. “Products with ceramides help keep your skin healthy and hydrated.”

How to use ceramides in skin care

Emollients, which form a film on your skin and help relieve dryness and itchiness

Humectants, which draw in moisture by attracting and binding water to your skin

Occlusives, which lock in moisture and hydration but don’t dissolve in water

But what does that mean for you, exactly? To help figure it all out, Dr. Kassouf shares some specific ingredients that work well with ceramides. Look for:

Zelensky’s Gauntlet – Did Ukraine Just Draw the USA and NATO Closer to War with Russia by Targeting Russian Strategic Long-Range Bombers Covered by SALT and START Treaties?

First the cliff notes version: There’s an important detail to remember. People are laughing at the long-range Russian bombers being left out in the open, vulnerable to attack.However, the bomber visibility is required as part of several nuclear agreements between the USA and Russia (SALT and START). Our U.S. long range nuclear capable bombers, covered under the same agreements, are also visible.

Ukraine President Zelenskyy is playing with fire by targeting them, which also explains why Zelenskyy never told President Trump in advance.

The U.S and NATO have provided the means. However, #1) did Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just exploit a vulnerability by targeting Russian long-range nuclear capable bombers? and #2) was the CIA and NATO intelligence community a willfully blind participant knowing they would benefit?

Both the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT) and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), call for U.S. and Russian long range nuclear capable bombers to remain “visible and observable by national technical means of verification.” That open visibility creates a mutual vulnerability as well as a method of surveillance and verification for both the USA and Russian Federation.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and by extension his NATO enablers, just exploited that SALT/START vulnerability and used drones to attack Russian bombers covered by USA-Russia treaties. There are reports (and videos) now surfacing from inside Russia showing the Russian Federation moving strategic long-range mobile missile launchers into position for a counterattack against Ukraine.

This situation is obviously very fluid and let us all hope that President Trump and President Putin are in communication about this escalation as created by Zelenskyy and his enablers, even if -and probably especially if- our own intelligence agencies are part of the enabling.

Think about the ramifications of NATO enabled Ukraine targeting major Russian military assets which are vulnerable only because they are part of a previously agreed U.S-Russia negotiation to remain vulnerable. In essence, an argument can be made by Russia that NATO -and by extension us- have targeted nuclear capable missile systems, and those systems were protected by the SALT/START treaties. How would we respond of an adversary launched a strike against our strategic long-range nuclear capable bombers in the USA?

I cannot imagine how President Trump would address a phone call with President Putin when the leader of the Russian Federation confronts him with the reality that it was NATO and USA military support, actual hardware and technical capability, that has provided Ukraine with the ability to target strategic nuclear weapons.

If President Trump did not know of the strike target in advance, which is the element being reported and confirmed by multiple media outlets, this would indeed put Trump in a very difficult position. That reality is likely the motive for Ukraine never to have informed the White House.

Keep in mind the SALT/START treaties are between the USA and Russia only, not necessarily including NATO or European countries. However, the U.S. govt has publicly and openly been sending military hardware and technical resources into Ukraine.

If President Trump or his National Security Council were made aware that Ukraine was going to strike at nuclear capable targets covered by strategic defense agreements,I strongly doubt President Trump, or any member of his administration would have approved or consentedto any participation or support. This is just too strong a provocation to enlarge the conflict and draw NATO into it even deeper.

What happens next is unknown.

President Barack Obama negotiated New START, a successor to President Ronald Reagan’s 1994 START I Treaty. START I cut long-range, or strategic, nuclear arsenals by 30-40 percent. New START slashed accountable deployed strategic arms by another three-quarters. In 2021, Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin extended New START until next February 2026.

Lipid nanoparticles (“LNPs”) are very small spherical particles composed of lipids, serving as a pharmaceutical drug delivery system. In mRNA covid “vaccines,” for example, LNPs act as delivery vehicles that protect the mRNA and transport it to the right place within cells.

The exact number of LNPs in a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech’s or Moderna’s covid injection is unknown. Moderna has responded that it is “irrelevant” and the UK’s drug regulator hasn’t provided an answer.

The use of these LNPs may lead to slow, systemic toxicity, including inflammation, metabolic dysfunction and potential long-term damage, such as neurodegenerative or autoimmune triggers.

The second round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks have begun in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Ahead of the talks, Kiev intensified drone attacks on Russian territory, targeting civilian infrastructure, trains, and military airfields, which Moscow claims are attempts to sabotage negotiations.

Just a day before scheduled talks, two bridges collapsed in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk border regions, leading to at least seven deaths and dozens of injured. The incidents were caused by sabotage, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Later that same day, drones targeted military airfields in Murmansk Region in the country’s north, in Ivanovo and Ryazan regions in western Russia, and in Irkutsk Region in Siberia and Amur Region in the Far East. In response to Kiev’s raids, Russia has launched several retaliatory strikes targeting Ukraine’s defense industry facilities, as well as military assembly points and warehouses.

Some military bloggers and analysts suggest that Kiev may have undertaken such actions todemonstrate to its Western supporters that it still has the means to continue fighting Russia, as well as to intimidate the Russian population.

On Sunday afternoon, Russia’s delegation, led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, arrived in Istanbul. Ukraine’s team for the meeting is headed by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. Also given Senator “warmonger” Lindsey Graham’s and Senator “Da Nang Dick” Blumenthal’s recent visit, this attack could appear as though it was sanctioned. I pray the Russians have better intelligence than that. IMHO, these two don’t have the sense or common sense to pull something like this off (there will have to be denials though).

FYI, Those bombers that were hit HAVE to be out in full view due to nuclear treaty obligations. Zelenskyy took advantage of that. For instance, they appear to have hidden the drones in containers and were driven on trucks near the airbase. Smart use of deception (see photos below).

However, imagine any one of our big bomber bases having the exact same thing done to them. Very costly U.S. Strategic Bombers can be taken out in the same way by anyone with access to inexpensive drones, delivery trucks, explosives, and a bit of technical knowledge (not good and new tactics will now have to be developed).

People, and especially world leaders, need to realize the global implications to such an operation as Ukraine just pulled off.

Russia will respond. Action, reaction, counteraction. Those are the shifting tides of warfare.

This wasn’t a bold action, it was brash. Ukraine’s short-term win could be the world’s long-term loss.

Despite what is a complete mess right now in Europe, there are still solutions to achieving peace. They are narrowing however and time, as it often does, becomes an enemy instead of a useful friend.

Veil Nebula: Wisps of an Ancient Supernova

Wisps like this are all that remain visible of a Milky Way star. About 7,000 years ago that star exploded in a supernova, leaving the Veil Nebula. At the time, the expanding cloud was likely as bright as a crescent Moon, remaining visible for weeks to people living at the dawn of recorded history. Today, the resulting supernova remnant, also known as the Cygnus Loop, has faded and is now visible only through a small telescope directed toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus). The remaining Veil Nebula is physically huge, however, and even though it lies about 1,400 light-years distant, it covers over five times the size of the full Moon. The featured picture was taken in Kuwait in mid-2024 and features light emitted by hydrogen in red and oxygen in blue. In deep images of the complete Veil Nebula like this, even studious readers might not be able to identify the iconic filaments.

Russian spy chief holds phone conversation with CIA boss

Sergey Naryshkin and John Ratcliffe have agreed to maintain regular contact to reduce tensions between the US and Russia

Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Director Sergey Naryshkin has spoken on the phone with his CIA counterpart, John Ratcliffe, with both agreeing to maintain regular contact.

During the conversation, which took place on Tuesday, the heads of the two agencies agreed to maintain a dialogue in order to “promote international stability and security, as well as to reduce tensions in relations between Moscow and Washington,” the SVR director said in a statement on Wednesday.

Naryshkin and Ratcliffe also discussed cooperation between the two agencies “on areas of mutual interest and the resolution of crisis situations.”

The Russian intelligence chief has repeatedly signaled his readiness tomaintain contact with the CIA in recent years despite strained relations between Moscow and Washington=. In January, just two days after Ratcliffe’s appointment as CIA director was confirmed by the US Senate, Naryshkin said he was ready to meet with his US counterpart.

In 2023, the head of the SVR spoke with then-CIA Director William Burns. The two discussed the Ukraine conflict and the mutiny launched by the late founder of the Wagner private military company, Evgeny Prigozhin, which took place that summer. In May 2024, Naryshkin said further contact with Burns “cannot be ruled out.”

The news comes as both Moscow and Washington have resumed dialogue, which largely ceased under Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, and intensified efforts to settle the Ukraine conflict.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would likely to schedule a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin this week to negotiate a proposed 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.

Trump made the remarks after Ukrainian and American delegations met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Kiev agreed to Washington’s proposal for a ceasefire with Moscow.

The presidents’ call would be their second in just a month. In an effort to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, Trump had a 90-minute phone conversation with Putin on February 12. Both leaders agreed to start negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

The Kremlin has yet to respond officially, but Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow-Washington contacts could not be ruled out. Kremlin pool reporter Dmitry Smirnov has suggested a presidential call could happen on Friday.

Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) chief Sergey Naryshkin has said he may soon meet with CIA Director John Ratcliffe,following what he described as a “very constructive”phone call.

The two intelligence heads held their first phone discussion in March. Naryshkin disclosed at the time that both sides agreed to maintain regular contact to help reduce tensions in relations. He highlighted the importance of continuing dialogue even amid strained political conditions.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Naryshkin confirmed that he had spoken with his US counterpart again and hinted at the possibility of a direct meeting. “We had a phone conversation with a colleague, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. It was a very constructive conversation. Therefore, I do not rule out that a meeting may take place within some time,” he was quoted as saying by TASS.

Naryshkin has repeatedly signaled his openness to maintaining communication with US intelligence officials, both before and after Donald Trump’s return to the presidency.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has reversed a number of US foreign policy positions and moved to re-establish channels of communication with Moscow, which were largely frozen during the administration of former US President Joe Biden. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have since held several phone discussions, with particular focus on bilateral relations and the Ukraine conflict.

The US president’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has traveled to Moscow several times over the past few months to meet with Putin and other senior Russian officials.

UK could stage provocation against Russia – Moscow’s spy chief

London could resort to underhanded tactics in any country it is interested in, Sergey Naryshkin has claimed

The UK could stage a provocation against Russia, and has a track record of conducting hostile activities against Moscow, the head of the country’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, has claimed.

Speaking to TASS on Saturday, he did not rule out the possibility that the UK could deploy chemical weapons in Ukraine to frame Russia as the perpetrator.

”Britain could resort to provocations on the territory of any state if Britain is interested in it,” the official said, adding that the SVR is well aware of London’s covert hostile activities aimed at Russia.

In a statement on Thursday, the SVR also alleged that British and French intelligence agencies have been secretly working to undermine US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts in the Ukraine conflict and derail normalization between Washington and Moscow.

Commenting on recent Western media reports regarding the scale of Britain’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict, the Russian ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, said last week that he was not at all surprised by the revelations.

”We’ve known and publicly spoken about this for a long time. Previously, though, such statements were presented here as Russian propaganda, and now British journalists are writing about it,” he added.

Kelin also suggested that a lack of public discussion about London’s role in the Ukraine conflict in the wake of the media reports servedas a “tacit admission that Britain is engaging in unannounced hostile actions against us.”

Earlier this month, The Times, citing unnamed Ukrainian andBritish military officers, reported that the extent of the UK’s involvement in the hostilities between Kiev and Moscow has been far more extensive than previously known. The newspaper claimed that “UK troops were secretly sent to fit Ukraine’s aircraft with the [Storm Shadow long-range cruise] missiles and teach [Ukrainian] troops how to use them.”

London also reportedly played a key role in helping Ukraine prepare its much-touted 2023 counteroffensive against Russian forces, as well as in mediating between Kiev and Washington when the operation failed to meet US expectations.

(This reveals the UK and France could have probably did work with Ukraine to bomb Russia and nuclear bombers, behind Trump’s back! These two countries are not allies of the U.S. and really not friends with Trump.)

Everyone has heard the conspiracy theories that claim that the space program isn’t real and that the tens of thousands of people involved in the program are all involved in some massive cover up.

In 2002, astronaut and moonwalker Buzz Aldrin even punched a man harassing him square in the jaw for continually bothering him with this nonsense.

So you’ll forgive us if what we’re about to say sounds like something that would have us ducking from an astronaut fist.

No human has ever really left Earth’s atmosphere.

It sounds absolutely ridiculous when you first hear about it. After all, humans have walked on the surface of the moon.

But by some calculations, no person has ever left the absolute limits of Earth’s atmosphere, and here’s why.

Basically, it all depends on how you are defining “atmosphere.”

As NASA heliophysics expert Doug Rowland explains here, “As you think of the atmosphere where we live and breathe here on Earth, it doesn’t just stop right above our heads.

It doesn’t stop at Mount Everest. It doesn’t stop where the planes are flying. It goes on and on all the way up, and just gets less and less dense the higher you go. And it’s still there at a very high altitude.”

For orbiting satellites, the space station, and other manmade objects up there, it means they are still subject to a small amount of drag.

For the purposes of most scientists and space treaties, the atmosphere ends at “a delineation known as the Karman line, located 100 kilometers (62 miles) above Earth’s surface,” according to NASA.

This is because 99.999975 of Earth’s atmosphere lies within this limit.

But that isn’t all of it, and studies have identified an extremely thin layer of atmosphere called the geocorona that may extend over 391 thousand miles outside the Earth, encompassing the orbit of the moon.

No, you can’t breathe up there. And yes, it’s still “outer space.” But, technically, there’s a tiny, tiny bit of Earth’s atmosphere up there.

Ukraine ‘a terrorist state’ – top Russian MP

Kiev is seeking to “intimidate civilians” and “provoke aggression” before talks with Moscow in Istanbul, Andrey Kartapolov has said

A senior Russian lawmaker has accused Ukrainian intelligence services of orchestrating an explosion that damaged a bridge in Russia’s Bryansk region, describing the incident as an act of terrorism aimed at intimidating civilians and provoking Moscow ahead of potential talks.

On Saturday evening, as a result of an explosion, a bridge fell in front of a moving passenger train moving at high speed, derailing it.The crash killed seven people and injured 97 others.Several hours later, a railway bridge collapsed under a moving freight train in Kursk Region, wounding the driver and two of his assistants.

“This is clearly the work of Ukrainian special services. Everything points to Ukraine being a terrorist state,” Andrey Kartapolov, head of the Russian State Duma’s defense committee, told Russian news outlet SHOT, on Sunday.

Kartapolov said the blasts had no military significancebut were designed to “harden”Russia’s stance and spread fear among the population. He added that Russian security services would investigate the incident and determine the circumstances.

“All of this is aimed at escalating Russia’s position and provoking aggression before negotiations, as well as to intimidate people. But it won’t work,” he said.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement on Sunday that the bridges had been “blown up”in both incidents.

Later that same day, drones targeted military airfields in Murmansk Regionin the country’s north, in Ivanovo and Ryazan regions in western Russia, and in Irkutsk Region in Siberia and Amur Region in the Far East.

Ukraine’s VladimirZelensky touted the “absolutely brilliant result” saying that the strikes had been prepared for more a year and a halfand targeted Russia’s strategic aviation fleet.

“In total, 117 drones were used in the operation,” he said in a video message posted on X. Drones were reportedly smuggled into Russia and launched remotely off the back of trucks.

In response to Kiev’s raids, Russia has launched several retaliatory strikes targeting Ukraine’s defense industry facilities, as well as military assembly points and warehouses.

While Kiev has not officially claimed responsibility for the collapses of two bridges that caused train derailments in Russia,Ukrainian opposition MP Artyom Dmitruk said the incidents were “another step toward peace according to Zelensky’s formula,” referring to his proposed peace plan.

“Let me remind you, negotiations are scheduled for June 2,” the lawmaker added.

The second round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks begins in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Monday. The two countries held their first direct negotiations in three years in May, where they agreed to submit detailed ceasefire proposals

Lavrov and Rubio discuss Ukrainian attacks on Russia

The Russian foreign minister and US secretary of state have discussed Kiev’s strikes on civilian and military facilities

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the phone on Sunday. The two sides discussed the upcoming Moscow-Kiev talks in Istanbul and recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.

Just a day before the talks scheduled in Türkiye, two bridges collapsed after bomb attacks in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk border regions, leading to at least seven deaths and dozens of injuries. The incidents were caused by sabotage, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Lavrov and Rubio also “exchanged views on various initiatives concerning the political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis,” including the upcoming Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul scheduled for June 2.

US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said thatRubio “reiterated President Trump’s call for continued direct talks between Russia and Ukraine to achieve a lasting peace.”

In response to the Ukrainian raids, Russia launched several retaliatory strikes targeting Ukraine’s defense industry facilities, as well as military assembly points and warehouses. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, most of the strikes were successfully repelled, with some resulting in material damage.

Kiev attacked military airfields in five Russian regions – MOD

Several aircraft were damaged and some of the perpetrators behind the attacks are in custody, the military has said

Military airfields across Russia have been attacked in a series of kamikaze drone strikes, the country's Defense Ministry reported on Sunday, blaming the incidents on Kiev. Most of the strikes were successfully repelled, with some resulting in material damage, it added.

Airfields were targeted in the Murmansk Region in the country’s north, in Ivanovo and Ryazan regions in central Russia as well as in Irkutsk Region in Siberia and Amur Region in the Far East, the ministry said. All the attacks employed first-person view (PFV) kamikaze drones, with some of them being launched from territories in close proximity to the airfields, it stated.

Some of the culprits behind the attacks have been detained, the ministry said, without revealing the number of those arrested or their identities. The Russian military also said that the “Kiev regime” was ultimately responsible for the strikes, which they described as “terrorist attacks.”

In Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions, the attacks were repelled and resulted in no damage or casualties, according to the ministry. In Murmansk and Irkutsk regions, the strikes led to some aircraft catching fire, the military said. No casualties have been reported in any of the incidents, according to the ministry’s data.

Channel 24 in Ukraine published a photo of the head of the country’s domestic security service (SBU), Vasily Malyuk, looking at what they said were maps of five Russian military airfields. The photo was released by the SBU itself, the media stated.

Earlier on Sunday, the first drone attack was reported in Siberia, targeting a military installation in Irkutsk Region. According to Governor Igor Kobzev, the launch site was promptly “blocked” and there was “no threat to the lives and health of civilians,” the official added.

Ukraine has significantly escalated drone strikes into Russia in recent weeks, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has earlier described them as attempts to derail the peace process.

North Korea no longer bans military use of space for defense purposes

North Korea lifted a ban on the military use of space for national defense purposes by amending its space development law in 2022, analysis by 38 North, a U.S.-based organization monitoring the nuclear-armed nation revealed Sunday.

Language opposing the militarization of space and limiting its use to peaceful purposes was removed, while the revised law includes a warning that countermeasures will be taken against any country attempting unfriendly acts, the analysis said.

As the United States, Russia and China have advanced the military use of space, North Korea claims to have put a reconnaissance satellite into orbit for the first time in 2023, underscoring its stance of actively promoting the domain.

The organization obtained a smartphone sold in 2024 in North Korea. The device contained an app referencing the law, making the details of the legal reforms clear and showing that the number of articles in the law has increased from 23 to 48.

A researcher at 38 North said the amendment suggests North Korea's space strategy is maturing. The results of the analysis are expected to be posted on the organization's website soon.

The space development law was enacted in 2013. North Korean state-run media reported that it has been revised but has not provided specifics.

fourth man has been arrested by police investigating fires at two properties and a car linked to Sir Keir Starmer.

Cops say the 48-year-old was detained at Stansted Airport in Essex earlier today on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.

The arrest is connected to an investigation into a vehicle fire on May 8, a fire at the entrance of a property on May 11 and a fire at a residential address on May 12.

The man - who has not yet been named - has been taken to a London police station, where he currently remains in police custody.

Three men have already been charged in connection with the fires, Ukrainians Petro Pochynok, 34, and Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Ukrainian-born Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 26, who are all due to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday.

Pochynok was charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. He was arrested in the Chelsea area of London on May 19.

The charge relates to three arson incidents: a vehicle fire in Kentish Town, a fire at the Prime Minister's private home in the same street, and another blaze at an address where he previously lived in the Islington area.

One of the fires took place in the early hours of May 12 at the property where Sir Keir lived before he became Prime Minister and moved into Downing Street.

Space Norway integrates Starlink with GEO/HEO services

Space Norway has added SpaceX’s Starlink low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity to its suite of communications services to ships and offshore support vessels operating in northern seas, Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Starlink will be provided alongside communications over geostationary (GEO) and highly elliptical orbit (HEO) satellites as part of a multi-orbit solution.

LEO will enable low-latency, high-speed communications to enhance critical connectivity and crew welfare services to vessels operating in regions Space Norway provides coverage with its own GEO and HEO satellites.

“This agreement, as an authorised Starlink reseller, marks a significant milestone in our journey toward becoming a comprehensive multi-orbit service provider,” said Space Norway chief executive Morten Tengs.

Space Norway director of data services, Jan Hetland, said LEO services will be enabled in the coming weeks with shipowners and managers able to purchase the necessary hardware, including flat-panel antennas to run Starlink services directly from Space Norway.

“With Starlink, we can deliver resilient connectivity to both current and new clients,” said Mr Hetland.

Clients can use Space Norway’s engineering team and 24/7 support desk and portal to manage their connectivity by monitoring usage, as well as upgrading and downgrading their service.

Space Norway is expanding its own constellation of satellites in the next three years to enhance its Ka-band very small aperture terminal (VSAT) services to shipping.

In February 2025, Space Norway ordered a new GEO satellite to provide Ka-band connectivity to the maritime and offshore sectors across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The Norwegian satellite owner finalised an agreement with Thales Alenia Space for the design, construction, testing and delivery of Thor 8, which is scheduled for launch in 2027.

On Sunday, Mohamad Soliman, an illegal alien who entered the US from Egypt in 2022 during the Biden regime, attacked a Jewish gathering with alcohol and Molotov cocktails.

Several Jews were injured in the attack including children.

Soliman was brought into custody following the attack in Boulder, Colorado.

Authorities said the violent incident happened at 13th Street and Pearl Street on Sunday afternoon. Police asked everyone to avoid the area while first responders worked the scene.

The attacker was identified as Mohamad Soliman from Egypt. Several children were injured in the planned attack.

Bill Melugin from FOX News later reported that Mohamad Soliman is an illegal immigrant from Egypt who entered the country during the Biden years.

Soliman came in 2022 during the Biden regime and overstayed his visa and never left.

On Monday, Eric Coomer, former Director of Product Strategy and Security for Dominion Voting Systems, will face off against Mike Lindell, MyPillow, and FrankSpeech (consolidated as “Lindell”) in a lawsuit brought in federal court in Colorado.

Coomer is suing Lindell for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civil conspiracy, claiming that Lindell’s conduct provoked “an onslaught of harassment and credible death threats issued against him.”

The lawsuit centers around alleged false claims and defamatory statements made by Mike Lindell as a result of accusations made by Joe Oltmann on The Conservative Daily Podcast (now Untamed) following the 2020 election.

Oltmann alleged that he had covertly infiltrated a phone call for ANTIFA members prior to the 2020 election. During the call, Oltmann claims a man identified as “Eric from Dominion” had ensured that President Trump would not win and that he “made effing sure of it.” After the 2020 election concluded, Oltmann believed “Eric from Dominion” on that call was likely Eric Coomer, the then-Director of Product Strategy and Security for Dominion Voting Systems.

Following the election, numerous vitriolic social media posts by Coomer against President Trump and anyone who supports him, including Coomer’s own family and co-workers, surfaced, some with demands that family and friends stop following him and unfriend him. In a 2021 New York Times article by Susan Dominus titled “He Was the ‘Perfect Villian’ for Voting Conspiracists,” Coomer does not dispute the posts but rather expresses regret that he didn’t delete them.

From the New York Times:

As Coomer watched the video, though, he felt a second strong emotion: a powerful sense of regret — because the Facebook posts were, in fact, authentic. Why, he thought, hadn’t he just deleted them? Coomer could imagine how his words would sound to just about any Republican, let alone someone already hearing on Fox News that Dominion was switching votes for Biden. He told me that he believed every word of what he said on Facebook, but when colleagues later asked him what he was thinking, he was frank: He had screwed up. At a time when well-​funded efforts to sow mistrust in the election were already underway, Coomer had given conspiracy theorists a valuable resource, a grain of sand they could transform into something that had the feel — the false promise — of proof.

Some of these posts will be permitted as evidence during the trial starting on Monday, however, some key posts and interesting facts, as reported by the New York Times, will not.

In the Order on Motion in Limine (seeking exclusion of arguments or evidence from trial), Coomer had sought to preclude several “categories of evidence” from the trial (and the judge’s ruling on them):

What’s Permitted

In September 2021, after the incident’s alleged in the lawsuit, Coomer was involved in an automobile accident in Colorado. He crashed his truck into a building and fled the scene to the bar he owned down the street. When he was confronted by police at the establishment, he denied any knowledge of the accident while telling police that he had just done some shots with the cook at the bar.

After an hour, while in the back of the police car in handcuffs, and after the police spoke with Coomer’s attorney on-scene, Coomer finally admitted that he hit the building and panicked.

This will be admitted for the purpose of evaluating his “truthfulness,” however, the body cam footage will not be admissible.

SpaceX Starlink Mission

June 2, 2025

SpaceX is targeting Tuesday, June 3 for a Falcon 9 launch of 23 Starlink satellites, including 13 with Direct to Cell capabilities, to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Liftoff is targeted for 12:43 a.m. ET., with backup opportunities until 1:28 a.m. ET. If needed, additional launch opportunities are also available on Wednesday, June 4 starting at 12:02 a.m. ET.

‘Always Above’ documentary launches nationwide, showcasing Space Force's mission

The U.S. Space Force debuted its documentary, “Always Above,” during planetarium screenings nationwide on National Space Day, May 2, highlighting the service’s current-day capabilities in space and future efforts.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman attended one screening at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where Saltzman emphasized the Space Force's top priority – delivering combat-ready forces.

He highlighted the Guardian Spirit of collaboration as key to winning in space, underscoring the vital importance of controlling the space domain.

The 12-minute film showcases the emerging capabilities of the Space Force, and the various domains the service monitors alongside mission partners.

Russia and Ukraine said they had agreed at peace talks on Monday to exchange more prisoners of war and return the bodies of 12,000 dead soldiers.

The warring sides met for barely an hour in the Turkish city of Istanbul, for only the second such round of negotiations since March 2022.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan described it as a great meeting and said he hoped to bring together Russia's Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy for a meeting in Turkey with U.S. President Donald Trump.

But there was no breakthrough on a proposed ceasefire that Ukraine, its European allies and Washington have all urged Russia to accept.

Moscow says it seeks a long-term settlement, not a pause in the war; Kyiv says Putin is not interested in peace.

Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said Russian negotiators had handed their Ukrainian counterparts a detailed memorandum outlining Moscow's terms for a full ceasefire.

Medinsky, who heads the Russian team, said Moscow had also suggested a "specific ceasefire of two to three days in certain sections of the front" so that the bodies of dead soldiers could be collected.

Each side said it would hand over the bodies of 6,000 dead soldiers to the other.

In addition, they said they would conduct a further big swap of prisoners of war, after 1,000 captives on each side were traded following a first round of talks in Istanbul on May 15.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, who headed Kyiv's delegation, said the new exchange would focus on those severely injured in the war and on young people.

Umerov also said that Moscow had handed a draft peace accord to Ukraine and that Kyiv - which has drawn up its own version - would review the Russian document.

Ukraine has proposed holding more talks before the end of June, but believes that only a meeting between Zelenskiy and Putin can resolve the many issues of contention, Umerov said.

Zelenskiy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said Kyiv's delegation had requested the return of a list of children who it said had been deported to Russia.

Moscow says such children were moved in order to protect them from fighting. Medinsky said there were 339 names on Ukraine's list but that the children had been "saved", not stolen.

LOW EXPECTATIONS FOR ISTANBUL BREAKTHROUGH

Ukraine had a day earlier launched one of its most ambitious attacks of the war, using drones to target Russian nuclear-capable long-range bomber planes in Siberia and elsewhere. Angry war bloggers urged Moscow to retaliate strongly.

While both countries, for different reasons, are keen to keep Trump engaged in the peace process, expectations of a breakthrough on Monday had been low.

Ukraine regards Russia's approach to date as an attempt to force it to capitulate - something Kyiv says it will never do - while Moscow, which advanced on the battlefield in May at its fastest rate in six months, says Kyiv should submit to peace on Russian terms or face losing more territory.

Putin set out his opening terms for an immediate end to the war last June: Ukraine must drop its ambitions to join the Western NATO alliance and withdraw its troops from the entirety of the four Ukrainian regions claimed and largely controlled by Russia.

According to a proposed roadmap drawn up by Ukraine, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, Kyiv wants no restrictions on its military strength after any peace deal, no international recognition of Russian sovereignty over parts of Ukraine taken by Moscow's forces, and reparations.

Russia currently controls just under one fifth of Ukraine, or about 113,100 sq km, about the area of the U.S. state of Ohio.

Putin sent his army into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, after eight years of fighting in eastern Ukraine between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces.

The United States, which under Trump's predecessor Joe Biden was Ukraine's main source of advanced weaponry in the war, says over 1.2 million people have been killed and injured in the conflict since 2022.

Trump has called Putin "crazy" and berated Zelenskiy in public in the Oval Office, but the U.S. president has also said he thinks peace is achievable and that if Putin delays, the U.S. could impose tough sanctions on Russia.

Coordinated, long-range strikes on multiple Russian airbases thousands of miles from Ukraine took out more than a third of Russia's strategic cruise missile carriers, according to Kyiv, dealing a stinging blow to Moscow ahead of renewed peace talks.

Ukraine on Sunday launched 117 individually-operated drones at four airbases across Russia, officials said, in an attack branded "Russia's Pearl Harbor" by observers, referencing Japan's infamous 1941 assault on the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Oahu, Hawaii.

The operation, codenamed "Spiderweb," inflicted roughly $7 billion in damage as Kyiv struck more than 40 Russian aircraft simultaneously, including nuclear-capable bombers, Ukraine's SBU domestic security agency said.

Why It Matters

Russian and Ukrainian officials are meeting for fresh rounds of ceasefire negotiations in Istanbul on Monday, although there is muted optimism for what the pained talks could produce.

Meetings in Turkey last month secured the largest prisoner swap of the war, but failed to yield much progress on a ceasefire deal.

Brokering an agreement to bring Europe's largest land conflict since World War II to a close has been a core foreign policy pledge for President Donald Trump, although his administration has said it is willing to walk away if a deal cannot be swiftly reached.

Russia has in recent weeks launched its largest-scale aerial attacks of the more than three years of war on Ukraine.

What To Know

The head of Ukraine's SBU security service, Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk, said on Monday that Kyiv hit 41 aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers Russia has used extensively to fire long-range missiles at Ukraine.

Ukraine also struck an A-50 spy plane, Malyuk said. The A-50 surveillance aircraft is an expensive and scarce asset for Russia, previously targeted by Ukraine.

Footage widely circulating online appears to show several aircraft in flames or damaged. Andriy Kovalenko, an official with Ukraine's national security and defense council, said on Monday "at least 13 Russian aircraft were destroyed."

Ukraine said it had targeted four airfields "simultaneously," while Russia's Defense Ministry said Ukraine had used first person-view (FPV) drones to target military airfields in five regions — Amur, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Murmansk and Ryazan.

Moscow acknowledged "several" aircraft had caught fire in the strikes in Murmansk, in northwestern Russia, and Irkutsk, in Siberia.

The SBU did not name Ukrainka, an airbase in the Amur region reportedly hit by drones, as a target. An SBU spokesperson declined to comment when approached for clarification.

Igor Kobzev, the governor of Russia's Irkutsk region, said an unspecified number of drones had struck a military facility near the village of Sredny, close to the Belaya airfield.

Kobzev, as well as Russian and Ukrainian media reports, said drones had been launched from trucks parked close to the airfields.

Siberian Governor Pledges Rewards for Civilians Who Tried to Stop Ukrainian Drone Attacks

Authorities in eastern Siberia’s Irkutsk region said Monday that they will reward a group of civilians who were filmed trying to stop Ukrainian drones during the previous day’s attack on a nearby military airbase.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that “several aircraft caught fire” Sunday following drone attacks on the Belaya airbase in Irkutsk, more than 4,000 kilometers (2,700 miles) from Ukraine’s border, and on the Olenya airbase in the northwestern Murmansk region.

Airbases in the Ivanovo, Ryazan and Amur regions were also targeted, military officials said.

Irkutsk region Governor Igor Kobzev said it was the “first attack of this sort in Siberia,” part of a coordinated operation dubbed “Spider’s Web” by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it the country’s “most long-range operation” since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than three years ago.

Kobzev said the regional emergency response center had reviewed social media videos showing “concerned citizens who tried to interfere with the drones’ operation,” adding that authorities would “assess their actions and decide on the reward.”

Eyewitness video showed men throwing rocks to two others on the roof of a parked cargo truck, which was used as a launchpad for the drones. “Everyone in this parking lot helped out,” one man said. “We tossed rocks to try to prevent them from flying.”

An SBU source told Ukrainian media that the trucks were fitted with wooden structures whose roofs opened remotely to launch the drones. Photos shared by the SBU showed dozens of drones stored in cargo containers.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the drones were launched “in the immediate vicinity of the airbases,” not from Ukrainian territory.

Governors of nearby regions including Buryatia, Tyva and Novosibirsk said they had stepped up security measures following the strikes in the Irkutsk region and other parts of Russia over the weekend.

Russia deploys Chinese laser weapon to repel Ukrainian drone attacks in a first

Amidst the raging war between Kyiv and Moscow, Russia seems to have a new laser weapon in its arsenal to shoot down Ukrainian drones.

If claims made by Russian Military Information channels on Telegram are to be believed, Moscow has received and is fielding a laser weapon system from China on the battlefield.

A video posted on the Telegram channel shows a team of Russian Army personnel operating the counter-drone laser system from a vehicle.

As per multiple reports, the laser weapon looks similar to the system supplied by China to Iran.

This is also the first reported incident of a Chinese laser weapon being used by Russian forces in the ongoing war.

China’s laser weapon system supplied to Russia

China has been building and testing several laser weapon systems for counter-drone operations.

These systems can not only destroy drones, but are also being made with the intent to kill missiles, satellite networks, and other attack or surveillance equipment.

As per the claims made on Russia’s Telegram channel, the system supplied by China is a Low-Altitude Laser Defending System (LASS).

The message posted on the Telegram channel also states that the armed police in China use the same system and is likely developed by the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics.

The video first shows the might of the counter-drone laser weapon system.

It shows holes made in a metal plate, allegedly by the same equipment. Following this, the video displays the metal plate with four holes.

Next up, the video showcases a drone catching fire and spinning uncontrollably; a second drone is also shown as being hit with a laser burst.

Subsequently, the video shows damaged drone parts with burns – a hint at them being destroyed by the laser weapon system.

Although the Russians have not revealed exact details of the counter-drone system and its capabilities, it looks like an effective measure which can hurt Ukraine’s plans.

There is also a mystery around the number of these laser weapon systems supplied to Russia by China, and the areas in which they have been deployed.

However, as per a report by The War Zone, the system is quite similar to the Shen Nung (also called Shennong).

The report also states that it is the same system that was likely supplied to Tehran by Beijing in the recent past.

Advancements around the globe in counter-drone systems

Last year, China had reportedly deployed a drone-frying laser weapon on one of its Type 071 amphibious transport dock ships.

It was likely the first time the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy installed a laser weapon system on a warship.

Laser-based weapons are an excellent, low-cost weapon to shoot down drones, which are becoming increasingly frequent in warfare.

As long as there is a reliable power source, the weaponry can fire infinite rounds.

The cost to kill an enemy UAV also reduces substantially with laser systems, as compared to employing drones, missiles.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom too has developed DragonFire – a powerful weapon that can shoot down aerial threats.

The UK planned to deploy the laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) in Ukraine to shoot down Russian drones.

The weapon is likely going to be ready for use by 2027, if statements made by UK government officials are to be believed.

Similarly, the US, Israel, India, and other countries have developed or are developing their laser weapon systems for counter-drone operations.

Recently, Israel successfully deployed high-power laser interception systems in an operational environment.

The interceptions marked the world’s first confirmed use of high-power lasers in real-world defense scenarios.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Ukraine carried out one of its most ambitious and damaging drone strikes of the war, hitting more than a third of all Russian missile carriers in a single coordinated operation.

Known as “Operation Spiderweb,” the attack targeted airfields deep within Russian territory.

According to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), over 40 aircraft were hit in the strike, including strategic bombers like the Tu-95 and Tu-22 M3 and an A-50 radar aircraft.

The estimated damage totals about $7 billion.

An ideological cross-section of GOP senators are aligned against the Medicaid cuts passed by the House. And they have the numbers to force changes.

It’s megabill crunch time in the Senate. Arm-twisting over what to change in the House-passed version of the “big, beautiful” bill will largely play out behind closed doors the next few days. Strategy huddles include Senate Finance’s meeting tonight and Wednesday’s “Big Six” confab between Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, their tax committee chairs and lead administration officials.

One of Thune’s biggest challenges to pass the bill by July 4 will be winning over the “Medicaid moderates” — an ideological cross-section of members who are aligned against the cuts passed by the House and have the numbers to force changes. Among them: Sens. JoshHawley= of Missouri, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins== of Maine. Thune can lose only three GOP senators to pass the megabill.

Thune and Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), who is juggling Medicaid and tax conflicts in the bill, are talking to key members in anticipation of difficult negotiations. Crapo told Jordain ==he personally supports the House’s Medicaid work requirements]], which some GOP senators wary of benefit cuts say they could also support. But beyond that, they’re steering clear of public commitments.

One potentially major sticking point: The House-passed freeze on provider taxes, which most states use to help finance their share of Medicaid costs. Sen. Jim Justice, the former West Virginia governor, called it a “real issue,” and Hawley has also raised concerns. But other GOP senators, including Kevin Cramer (N.D.), want to go even further in reducing, not just freezing, the provider tax.

Republicans got a glimpse of the political minefield surrounding Medicaid while back home last week. Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) “we’re all going to die” response to town hall pushback about the cuts — and her decision to double down on the comments — generated days of negative headlines and ad fodder for Democrats.

Mehmet Oz, the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told POLITICO’s Dasha Burns in the debut episode of her podcast “The Conversation”that the Medicaid work requirements in the bill would “future proof” the program.

Then there are the deficit hawks. President Donald Trump over the weekend warned Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) to get behind the megabill, with Paul vowing to vote against it over an included debt-limit hike.

But it’s not just Paul making noise. Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.) is calling for a line-by-line budget review to find places to slash more spending, and Sens. Mike Lee (Utah) and Rick Scott (Fla.) are also pushing for more cuts.

Paul hinted at hard-liners’ leverage Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” saying: “I would be very surprised if the bill at least is not modified in a good direction.”

Massive drone attack targets Russian military-industrial sites right after surprise Spiderweb operation that destroyed bombers

Overnight drone attacks from 1 to 2 June, the coordinated assault targeted military and industrial facilities in eight regions across Russia’s western border, causing infrastructure damage and residential fires.

Drone attacks on Russian military bases and oil refineries are aimed at disrupting Russia’s military capabilities, logistics and war funding abilities.

This also comes after a successful Ukrainian Spiderweb operation on 1 June that targeted four Russian military airbases deep inside Russian territory.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) used 117 AI-powered FPV drones, smuggled into Russia hidden in trucks.

The attack reportedly destroyed and damaged over 40 strategic aircraft—including Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers and A-50 radar planes—used in attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The operation inflicted an estimated $7 billion in damage, hitting about 34% of Russia’s strategic missile carriers at their bases.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced that its air defense systems intercepted 162 Ukrainian drones.

Russian officials reported shooting down 57 drones over Kursk, followed by 31 over Belgorod Oblast and 27 over Lipetsk Oblast.

Smaller numbers were intercepted over Voronezh (16), Bryansk (11), Ryazan (11), Oryol (6), and Tambov (1) regions. Two additional drones were reportedly downed over occupied Crimea.

Voronezh Oblast experienced infrastructure damage when a high-voltage wire broke on the M-4 “Don” highway.

Governor Alexander Gusev reported broken windows in houses and vehicles but stated there were no civilian casualties among the 15 drones intercepted in the region.

Local residents reported attacks on the Borisoglebsk military airfield, which houses an aviation repair plant previously targeted in January 2025, according to Russian independent media Astra.

In Lipetsk Oblast, a drone crashed behind a three-story apartment building in Lebedyan, causing a fire and shattering windows from the blast wave.

Local reports suggested drones attempted to target the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant NLMK industrial plant that produces steel.

In Kursk, Governor Alexander Hinstein reported damage to residential buildings and other structures, however this information is not verified.

Debris from intercepted drones struck the upper floors of a nine-story apartment building on Dmitrov Street, damaging at least two apartments.

Two houses in the city’s private sector caught fire, though no official casualty reports were released at the time.

The city of Ryazan experienced more than 10 explosions during the night, according to local Telegram channels. Regional authorities reported damage to vehicles and residential building windows.

Ukraine War Reaches Arctic With Massive Drone Attack on Olenya Air Base Near Murmansk

In a long-planned special operation Ukraine forces have successfully targeted at least four air bases deep inside Russia, destroying more than 40 heavy bombers and surveillance aircraft.

A key target was the Olenya Air Base above the Arctic Circle south of Murmansk. The base sits at a distance of 2,000 kilometers from Ukraine and is around 200 kilometers from Norway’s northern border.

The Murmansk region and Kola Bay are home to key industrial and military complexes, including reloading facilities for Arctic crude oil and construction plants for liquefied natural gas terminals.

Russia had in recent days reportedly relocated a large number of aircraft from other airfields to the remote and heavily protected facility.

Images show numerous aircraft

Satellite images taken last week show a buildup of Russia’ strategic aviation forces at the air base including up to 40 Tu-22M3 and 11 TU-95MS long-range bombers.

By some accounts some 20 percent of Russia’s strategic long-range aircraft had been shifted to Olenya, with experts calling it an unprecedented redeployment.

Video footage of yesterday’s attack suggests that the Ukrainian operation was most successful at Olenya as well as Belaya airbase in Irkutsk, nearly 4,500 km from Ukraine.

Special forces

In total at least 41 heavy Russian bombers have been damaged or destroyed with preliminary figures placing the material loss at $2bn, with some Ukrainian sources citing up to $7bn. By some estimates a third of the country’s strategic bombers was struck by the attack.

Details released by official Ukrainian channels or government-affiliated sources say that “Operation Spiderweb” was carried out by SBU special forces and reportedly personally supervised by President Zelenskyy.

"An absolutely brilliant result. A result achieved solely by Ukraine. One year, six months, and nine days from the start of planning to effective execution. Our most long-range operation," Zelenskyy said.

Small drones

Small, FPV (first person view) drones located inside mobile containers loaded onto trucks were released in proximity to the military installations. The method suggests an elaborate operation within Russia with assembly and control of the drone from within the country.

The Olenya base had previously been the target of a more conventional large long-range drone attack in September 2024, though with limited success. This latest scheme instead relied on hundreds of small drones armed with explosives.

It is not yet clear if the drones were piloted manually or were controlled autonomously by computers. Experts suggest that Ukraine may have used models of the target aircraft to train AI to guide the drones to their intended target.

Ukraine likely had to overcome the obstacle of GPS jamming which has been reported extensively in the High North often reaching into North Norwegian airspace.

Norwegian pilots frequently experience GPS jamming in the Finnmark region, particularly when approaching and departing from airports.

Unconfirmed reports also indicate that a separate attack may have occurred at Severomorsk to the northeast of Murmansk, home of Russia’s Northern Fleet.

However, details of a possible target remain scarce as of Monday midday with Russian officials denying any attack on Severomorsk.

RBC Ukraine, the country’s main news agency, confirmed that an explosion had taken place at Severomorsk but did not provide additional information.

At least until early May, the United States had been demanding the new leadership broadly exclude foreign fighters from the security forces.

But Washington's approach to Syria has changed sharply since Trump toured the Middle East last month. Trump agreed to lift Assad-era sanctions on Syria, met Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh and named Barrack, a close friend, as his special envoy.

Two sources close to the Syrian defence ministry told Reuters that Sharaa and his circle had been arguing to Western interlocutors that bringing foreign fighters into the army would be less of a security risk than abandoning them, which could drive them into the orbit of al Qaeda or Islamic State.

The U.S. State Department and a Syrian government spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment.

He says it was better to keep the fighters, many of whom are “very loyal” to Syria’s new administration, within a state project than to exclude them.

The fate of foreigners who joined Syria’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels during the 13-year war between rebel groups and President Bashar al-Assad has been one of the most fraught issues hindering a rapprochement with the West since HTS, a one-time offshoot of al Qaeda, toppled Assad and took power last year.

At least until early May, the United States had been demanding that the new leadership broadly exclude foreign fighters from the security forces.

California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters’ congressional campaign has been fined $68,000 for violating several federal campaign finance laws during her 2020 reelection bid.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) recently published investigation documents showing Waters’ 2020 campaign committee, Citizens for Waters, understated contributions and spending by hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Waters campaign has agreed to pay the fine and “send its treasurer to a commission sponsored training program for political committees,” nonpartisan campaign finance research group OpenSecrets reported.

Waters Ordered To Pay Massive Fine For Violating Campaign Finance Laws

The campaign of progressive California Rep. Maxine Waters has agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after an investigation revealed that it broke many election regulations.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) stated in a batch of documents that the longtime House lawmaker’s 2020 campaign group, Citizens for Waters, violated many campaign finance regulations.

The FEC accused Citizens for Waters of “failing to accurately report receipts and disbursements in calendar year 2020,” “knowingly accepting excessive contributions,” and “making prohibited cash disbursements,” according to one document that appears to be a legally binding agreement that allows both parties to avoid court.

Waters’ committee agreed to pay the civil fine as well as “send its treasurer to a Commission-sponsored training program for political committees within one year of the effective date of this Agreement.”

“Respondent shall submit evidence of the required registration and attendance at such event to the Commission,” the document said.

According to the inquiry, Citizens for Waters took inappropriate campaign contributions from seven persons totaling $19,000 in 2019 and 2020, even though the maximum allowed individual contribution is $2,800.

The committee offloaded those excessive donations, albeit in an “untimely” fashion, the document said.

Waters’ campaign committee also “made four prohibited cash disbursements that were each in excess of $100, totaling $7,000,” the FEC said.

The campaign committee “contends that it retained legal counsel to provide advice and guidance to the treasurer and implemented procedures to ensure the disbursements comply with the requirements of the Act.”

Leilani Beaver, Citizens for Waters’ attorney, wrote to the FEC last year, claiming that the campaign financing infractions were “errors” that “were not willful or purposeful.”

Waters, the leading Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, has been in Congress since 1991.

OpenSecrets was the first to report the fresh movements in the inquiry.

Waters has previously drawn public attention for a very similar thing.

In 2023, a Fox News Digital investigation discovered that Waters’ campaign paid her daughter $192,300 for a “slate mailer” operation between January 2021 and December 2022.

Waters reportedly paid her daughter a single dollar out of thousands for campaign labor.

The FEC dismissed a charge alleging Waters’ campaign accepted improper campaign donations in 2018 by a 5-1 vote.

Waters previously made headlines when she made a series of nasty comments about First Lady Melania Trump.

Waters called on President Donald Trump to investigate and potentially deport First Lady Melania Trump during an anti-DOGE protest in Los Angeles last weekend.

Clips of the rant went viral as Waters suggested that the first lady’s citizenship status- she’s been a U.S. citizen since 2006- should be scrutinized as a means of pushing back on the president’s executive order eliminating birthright citizenship.

“When he [Trump] talks about birthright, and he’s going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America. If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania,” Waters was seen saying from the stage of a rally in Los Angeles, per a number of videos posted online.

“We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look,” the aged congresswoman continued.

Prior to that, she erupted in outrage and screeched her disapproval of both Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk at an event in Washington, D.C.

At a rally held by Democratic lawmakers protesting Musk’s access to information at the Treasury Department, Waters accused him of overstepping his boundaries without the consent of voters during her speech.

“We have got to tell Elon Musk that nobody elected your ass. Nobody told you you could get all of our private information. Nobody told you you could be in charge of the payments of this country,” Waters yelled.

Top CNN reporter fired after costly defamation suit

The departure comes on the heels of a Florida jury awarding a U.S. Navy veteran at least $5 million over a report that said he operated in a "black market."

CNN chief national security correspondent Alex Marquardt, whose 2021 report portraying a U.S. Navy veteran as illegally exploiting Afghans was found to be defamatory earlier this year, is leaving the network.

“Tough to say goodbye but it’s been an honor to work among the very best in the business,” Marquardt wrote in a Monday post on X (formerly Twitter). “Profound thank you to my comrades on the National Security team & the phenomenal teammates I’ve worked with in the US and abroad.”

Marquardt has been among the centerpieces of CNN’s coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war. He was also the focus of a defamation lawsuit against the network from Zachary Young, who sued over a report saying that he charged Afghans exorbitant fees to be evacuated in the aftermath of the U.S. military withdrawal from the country.

In January, a Florida jury awarded Young $5 million. Following the verdict, a settlement was reached to resolve the entirety of the case before jurors calculated punitive damages, which is intended to punish malicious conduct and could’ve added millions more to the total award, for an unspecified amount.

The decision may have amplified the perception of alleged bias from CNN amid President Donald Trump’s persistent criticism of the network.

After the verdict, CNN said at the time, “We remain proud of our journalists and are 100% committed to strong, fearless and fair-minded reporting at CNN, though we will of course take what useful lessons we can from this case.”

The disputed segment opens with Jake Tapper describing the U.S. government’s evacuation of citizens. He goes on to say Afghans “trying to get out of the country face a black market full of promises, demand of exorbitant fees, and no guarantee of safety or success.” The segment then switches to Marquardt describing the situation of a man located in the U.S. whose family remained in Afghanistan and said that he found people on Facebook charging $10,000 per person to be evacuated. Marquardt stated, “according to Afghans and activists we’ve spoke with, desperate Afghans are now being exploited” because of the “exorbitant” and “impossible” amounts charged, pointing to a LinkedIn post from Young advertising his services and chat logs between him and people inquiring about his business.

Discovery wasn’t kind to Marquardt or CNN, with internal emails suggesting that the network ignored evidence contrary to its narrative for the segment. In a message to a CNN colleague, he wrote that CNN is going to “nail this Zach Youngmfucker.” A producer said that the plaintiff had a “punchable face.”

CNN declined to comment for this story.

Before his eight-year stint at CNN, Marquardt was ABC News’ foreign correspondent for roughly the same amount of time. He has won Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards.
