Israel is building an execution facility for Palestinian prisoners sentenced to death on terrorism charges, ultranationalist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has announced. Apart from an execution chamber, the facility will house viewing booths where “crime victims” and their families can witness hangings – an option “customary in many countries,” Ben-Gvir mentioned while presenting the facility on Tuesday.

The complex will be used to hang convicted “terrorists” under the recently approved Death Penalty for Terrorists Law. The Knesset passed the legislation, championed by Ben Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit party, in March. It mandates death penalty for those convicted of deadly terrorist attacks aimed at “ending Israel’s existence” – a provision critics say effectively exempts Jewish Israelis, making the law applicable almost exclusively to Palestinians. Executions must be carried out within 90 days of sentencing, with no right of appeal.

The execution facility’s exact location has not been disclosed beyond that it is housed in a newly built death-row wing at a prison in central Israel. In partly blurred video footage filmed at the site, a beaming Ben-Gvir proudly showcases the construction site, framing it as the fulfillment of promises to his supporters.

“We are making history. Terrorists deserve only one thing – death by hanging,” the minister stated. “I took office promising to stop the ‘summer camps’ in the Prison Service. This has been fully implemented. I promised to legislate a death penalty law for terrorists. This has been carried out. And now the death row and hanging facility are also starting to take shape.”

Ben Gvir is known for inflammatory rhetoric toward Palestinians and has been sanctioned by multiple countries for repeatedly inciting violence against them.

He famously boasted that he would ensure “the terrorists [in prison] receive the minimum of the minimum” in food and argued last year that “there is no such thing as ‘Palestinian people.’” A leading advocate of the execution law, the minister and his party members wore noose-shaped lapel pins for months, while his 50th birthday cake in May also featured a noose.

‘Deeply discriminatory’ law

The death penalty law has drawn widespread criticism from human rights groups and legal campaigners, including in Israel, over discrimination, due process, and potential violations of international and Israeli law. UN human rights experts have warned that hanging in particular is incompatible with the absolute prohibition on torture, while Israeli rights group B’Tselem argued that the highly visual method contributes to the “dehumanization”of Palestinians.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called it “deeply discriminatory” and an egregious violation of international law. Israeli lawmakers and rights groups, including Adalah –The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel – recently petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the law as unconstitutional.

Israel previously permitted capital punishment only in exceptional cases, including treason and Nazi-era war crimes. Only two people have been executed since the state’s creation: an Israeli army officer for treason in 1948 and Nazi Holocaust architect Adolf Eichmann in 1962. No Palestinian prisoners have been sentenced to death since the new law was approved.

Israel currently holds around 9,400 Palestinian prisoners, including nearly 100 women and more than 370 minors,according to media reports citing the Palestinian Prisoner Society. Rights groups have repeatedly reported mistreatment of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, with former detainees and advocacy organizations alleging abuse, torture, starvation, physical and psychological harm, sexual violence, and denial of medical treatment. Israel is also reportedly holding the bodies of more than 100 Palestinians who died in its custody.

Meanwhile, reports state the Israeli military continues near-daily raids and arrests across the occupied West Bank and Gaza, ostensibly targeting Hamas militants and their supporters. Meanwhile, as Israeli settler violence against Palestinians and demolitions of homes belonging to relatives of Palestinians accused of attacks against Israelis continue, the UN warned last week that the humanitarian and security situation in the region had reached a critical “breaking point.”

Whatdunit? What disappeared while crossing a partially eclipsed Sun? Let’s present the evidence. The 24 frames-per-second video was taken in Spain (40°34'30.3"N 1°12'28.8"W) at 20:28 local time on August 12, 2026. The Perseids meteor shower was at its peak during this time. Is this a meteor? Meteor showers trace back to a region of the sky called a radiant point that corresponds to where the Earth is crossing a comet’s path. The object’s path might trace back to the Perseids’ radiant point in the Perseus constellation. The object trails a smaller angle on the sky than the 0.5 degree Sun and Moon, which is smaller than expected for a meteor. Its brightness does not extend much past the Sun, but a meteor burning up in the sky would not need sunlight to be seen. Perhaps the sunlight is reflecting off of the object? After cross-referencing the location, time, and point in the sky with a flight database, the culprit is found to be an airplane contrail!

The US has imposed sanctions on two senior International Criminal Court (ICC) officials,accusing The Hague-based institution of overstepping its authority.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday designated ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, describing the court as a “corrupt and fatally politicized supranational court that has maliciously abused its authority and exceeded its mandate.”

The designations are a part of a campaign announced by Rubio last month to “systematically dismantle the threat posed”by the ICC to US sovereignty.

Rubio has accused the court of targeting nationals of countries that have neither consented to its jurisdiction nor ratified the Rome Statute. The ICC previously investigated alleged crimes by US military and intelligence personnel in Afghanistan despite Washington not being a member.

Israel likewise rejects the court’s jurisdiction. Nevertheless, in 2024 the ICC issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. A February 2025 executive order signed by US President Donald Trump condemned the warrants.

Seye worked on the prosecution team involved in the Netanyahu case. Israeli outlet Ynet reported in May that he was also overseeing an ICC investigation into funding for West Bank settlements and the supply of weapons to settlers. Netanyahu welcomed the latest US sanctions, denouncing the ICC as a “kangaroo court.”

The ICC said on Wednesday it “strongly rejects” the new designations, calling them “a flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution.”

The court has also faced criticism elsewhere. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have initiated withdrawals this summer, while Chad followed in July, accusing the ICC of disproportionately focusing on Africa.

The Philippines withdrew in 2019, but the ICC maintained jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed while the country was a member. Former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested under an ICC warrant in March 2025 over alleged crimes against humanity linked to killings during his anti-drug campaign and transferred to The Hague.

Russia has likewise rejected the court’s authority. The ICC issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova in March 2023 over the alleged unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia. Moscow dismissed the warrants as legally null and void and rejected the allegations, saying it evacuated unaccompanied children from the war zone and is ready to return them to their legal guardians upon request.

And moments ago, Scott Bessent finally resolved the debate when, with 30Y yields at 20 year highs and threatening to blow out higher, the US Treasury shocked markets, sparked a meltdown in yields and surge in equity futures and gold when it announced at 8:30am that they will be "increasing, by at least double, the size of liquidity support buyback operations for longer-dated nominal coupon securities (the 10-year to 20-year sector and the 20-year to 30-year sector). The current maximum size of $2 billion per operation will be at least $4 billion per operation."

This change will be effective September 9, 2026 and will be in effect for the remainder of this refunding quarter (through November 4, 2026). The releases noted that the Treasury will provide more information about future buyback sizes at the next Quarterly Refunding, scheduled for November 4, 2026, in other words it has the benefit of 3 months of "NOT QE" without having to even specify its thinking.

According to the statement, "this increase in buyback operation sizes reflects Treasury’s desire to provide greater liquidity support in longer-dated nominal sectors where there is consistent strong sponsorship from market participants, as evidenced by the significant volume of high-quality offers Treasury routinely receives in longer-dated buyback operations."

Translation: Bessent panicked and the justification that there is no liquidity is just a strawman, with the Treasury now freaking out that the demand for AI paper is crowding out demand for Treasuries as we have been warning for the past several weeks, and as we predicted a week ago when looking at the blowing out Treasury skew, "Bessent will be busy.:"

All these wrongful arrests based on faulty Flock camera evidence is another illustration of the way people are making themselves dumber by outsourcing their thinking to machines.

Today in dystopia, police have been wrongfully arresting people based on faulty information from AI-assisted Flock surveillance footage instead of actually investigating the evidence of the crime.

In an article titled “She Spent 7 Months in Legal Hell After Cops Used Flock Surveillance To Identify the Wrong Car,” Reason Magazine documents multiple instances of innocent people having their lives upended in legal battles because police slammed them with charges based on incorrect Flock camera data which could have easily been ruled out by some basic verification.

Here’s an excerpt:

“But Isaacs wasn’t involved in the crash, and officers had enough information at the time to exclude her as a suspect. Yet she still spent two weeks in jail and faced the threat of life behind bars for months because police didn’t use basic scrutiny to be sure their cameras implicated the right person.

“Much has been written about Flock cameras making mistakes — including cases in which innocent people were detained at gunpoint because a camera mistook a 2 for a 7, or misread the state on a license plate.

“But it’s worse than just imperfect software: All too often, police pull people over, arrest them, and even jail them based on camera misidentifications that officers could have caught with basic scrutiny. There are also numerous examples of officers with access to Flock’s database using it to stalk and surveil people in their personal lives.”

Reason shared a police body cam video of a cop confidently handing a court summons to a woman for package theft, telling her and her husband that it was “100 percent” certain she was guilty because Flock surveillance had her on camera committing the crime.

“We have cameras everywhere in that town; you can’t get a breath of fresh air in or out without us knowing,” the officer asserts on camera, saying “It is her, it is 100 percent, it is locked in, there is zero doubt; I wouldn’t have come here unless I was 100 percent sure.”

If that wasn’t Orwellian enough for you, Reason reports that the woman was only able to exonerate herself by providing police with “her cellphone tracking data, camera footage from her truck, and video placing her elsewhere at the time of the theft.” In other words, she was only saved from wrongful conviction based on faulty mass surveillance by providing correct information from other forms of mass surveillance.

It is absolutely chilling how the panopticon of surveillance is creating this “guilty until proven innocent by better surveillance” standard that is rapidly becoming the norm throughout our society. The state is being given massive, sweeping powers to monitor every aspect of civilian life to an increasingly intrusive extent, and it is already ruining people’s lives. This benefits nobody but the powerful, who live in constant vigilance and paranoia about the common folk growing fed up with their rulers and forcing the creation of a more equitable status quo.

A complicated mission to save a NASA satellite from burning up in the atmosphere has failed, the US space agency said Wednesday, as the rescue spacecraft could not be controlled.

The Swift space telescope, which studies the most powerful explosions in the universe, will now likely plunge back to earth and disintegrate along the way later this year.

The unprecedented $30 million dollar mission attempted to send a robot to grab the telescope and move it farther into orbit.

“This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said.

Planners had hoped the mission would pave the way for giving other satellites a second life.

“The team moved with extraordinary speed to give Swift a chance to carry out more science while advancing capabilities America will need for satellite servicing in the future,” Isaacman added.

Developed by American startup Katalyst, the unmanned spacecraft was launched on July 3 by a small rocket named Pegasus, which was itself launched from an airplane.

However, on July 28 the company said the spacecraft had been in an out-of-control spin for 72 hours with multiple problems including a loss of communications.

In announcing the mission failure on Wednesday, Katalyst cited “ongoing attitude control issues” as the reason it and NASA were calling it off.

NASA said that the spacecraft would still attempt to reach the Swift telescope with the hope of giving scientists and engineers lessons for similar future missions.

The agency launched Swift in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving back to Britain in the biggest shift to their family life since stepping away from royal duties in 2020, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are relocating with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, to the U.K. for an extended period beginning this month, PEOPLE understands, with the children set to begin school there in September.

The couple will maintain their home in Montecito, California, and their vacation property in Portugal while establishing a private, non-royal home base in Britain. The location of the family’s new home and the children’s school are being closely guarded.

The move gives Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, their first home base in Britain since they relinquished the lease on Frogmore Cottage, the Windsor residence gifted to them by the late Queen Elizabeth in 2023. King Charles, 77, asked them to vacate the property following the publication of Harry’s raw 2023 memoir, Spare.

King Charles was made aware of the couple’s plans on Sunday, August 16, PEOPLE understands, and welcomes the opportunity to see more of the Sussex family in a private and personal capacity.

The move comes just weeks after Harry and Meghan returned to the U.K. with Archie and Lilibet for a successful summer visit that included the children’s first reunion with their grandfather in more than four years.

Charles is said to have been clear there will be no change to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s status as private individuals and non-working members of the royal family, in keeping with the wishes they expressed and the agreement reached when they stepped back from royal duties.

Those close to the Sussexes believe they have successfully executed the “half in, half out” model Harry and Meghan proposed to the royal family in 2019. With a base in Britain, Harry will be able to spend more time with charities including Scotty’s Little Soldiers and WellChild, as well as the Invictus community, while Meghan continues leading her lifestyle company, As Ever, and pursuing future projects.

Allies say the couple have built the independent life they envisioned — championing the causes most important to them while supporting themselves financially, paying their own bills and mortgage, and relying on no taxpayer funding.

The move is also the clearest sign yet that Harry believes his family’s long-running security concerns have reached a point where he feels comfortable basing Meghan and their children in Britain once again. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the matter of security.

US President Donald Trump has said he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un later this year, days after ordering joint military drills with South Korea scaled back over what he called their ‘hostile’ signal to Pyongyang.

During his first presidency, Trump and Kim sought to improve relations between the two countries, meeting three times, including at the Demilitarized Zone in 2019. The diplomatic thaw eventually stalled without a deal on North Korea’s nuclear program.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said he knows Kim Jong-un “very well” and the two “get along.”

“The fact that I get along with him – that’s a good thing,” the US president said, adding that North Korea possesses “57 very powerful nuclear weapons.”

Asked whether he planned to meet with Kim later this year, Trump replied: “Yeah, I will be.”

Also on Wednesday, NBC News quoted a White House official as saying Trump was open to meeting Kim at the “appropriate time,” although no date has been set.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s National Defense Ministry said that the annual joint military drills with the US, codenamed Ulchi Freedom Shield, were being cut short at Washington’s request.

A US Department of War official said the drills, which began on Monday, would end on August 21 rather than August 27, with some live-training events canceled or converted to simulations.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun told parliament on Wednesday that the Trump administration had not notified Seoul of the move in advance.

North Korea has denounced the joint US-South Korean drills and vowed to respond with a “new level of deterrent.” Kim’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, a high-ranking official in the Workers’ Party, said on Wednesday that the reduction in the scale and duration of the drills did not change their “hostile and confrontational nature.” She described the personal relationship between Trump and her brother as “excellent.” However, she denied that there is any communication between the two leaders, according to AP.

The drills were scaled back after Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday that he was “not happy” that the US had agreed to participate. He said the drills were costly and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to North Korea. “It is too late to cancel,” Trump wrote, adding that he had instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to “substantially reduce” the exercises.

Trump pointed out that South Korea has refused to back the US in its military campaign against Iran.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said he “was not happy when South Korea said – no, they are not interested in helping us with the Hormuz Strait.”

California Democrats on Wednesday passed AB 2624, dubbed the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’ by Republicans. The bill, introduced by Democrat Assemblywoman Mia Bonta, restricts the release of investigative videos exposing immigration support service providers.

Mia Bonta is married to California’s radical far-left Attorney General Rob Bonta.

The California Democrats got to work on AB 2624 earlier this year after investigative journalist Nick Shirley exposed rampant hospice and daycare fraud.

The bill will fine journalists (and regular citizens) a minimum of $4,000 for exposing potential fraud inside certain immigration support service providers.

Miami-Dade voters delivered a stunning rebuke Tuesday night, unseating Circuit Judge Mavel Ruiz after she temporarily blocked the transfer of prime downtown Miami property designated for President Donald Trump’s future presidential library.

Conservative attorney Destiny Alvarez, just 30 years old, defeated the longtime incumbent in the nonpartisan race for the 11th Judicial Circuit’s Group 67 seat.

With all 767 precincts reporting, Alvarez received 113,215 votes, or 50.46%, while Ruiz finished with 111,142 votes, or 49.54%.

Alvarez defeated Ruiz by 2,073 votes and crossed the 50% threshold needed to avoid a November runoff, according to Florida’s official election-night reporting system.

In other words, Ruiz is finished.

The contest became one of Florida’s most politically explosive judicial races after Ruiz inserted herself into the fight over President Trump’s planned presidential library.

In October 2025, Ruiz issued a temporary injunction blocking Miami Dade College from transferring a 2.63-acre parcel beside the historic Freedom Tower for the library project.

The injunction came after left-wing activist Marvin Dunn sued the college, alleging its Board of Trustees failed to provide sufficient public notice before approving the transfer under Florida’s Sunshine Law.

The valuable Biscayne Boulevard property was appraised at more than $67 million and sits near Biscayne Bay and the arena used by the Miami Heat.

Ruiz later dismissed Dunn’s complaint after the college held another publicly noticed meeting and voted unanimously for the transfer a second time. The judge claimed her decisions were based strictly on Florida’s open-government law and were not political. WLRN reported that the complaint was dismissed without prejudice in December.

But the damage was done.

The high-profile ruling turned Ruiz’s otherwise sleepy reelection campaign into a referendum on activist judges, President Trump, and the rapidly changing political landscape in Miami-Dade County.

Although judicial elections in Florida are officially nonpartisan, the political contrast between the candidates could hardly have been clearer.

Alvarez is a registered Republican and a member of the Federalist Society. Her campaign emphasized that judges should follow the Constitution, apply the law faithfully, and refuse to “legislate from the bench.”

She also received backing from law enforcement and first-responder organizations, including the Miami-Dade Fraternal Order of Police, the Police Benevolent Association, the Hialeah Police Officers Association, and the South Florida Council of Firefighters, according to her campaign website.

Ruiz, meanwhile, was recommended by left-wing organizations, including the Miami Beach Democratic Club and the Miami Democratic Socialists of America.

FBI agents confronted Eric Swalwell with a search warrant when he landed at San Francisco Airport Saturday and seized the former congressman's electronic devices including his cell phone as part of a federal criminal investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, the Daily Mail can exclusively reveal.

The agents, armed with additional court-approved search warrants, then entered his house in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, seizing additional undisclosed potential evidence, well-placed sources tell the Daily Mail.

Sources say Swalwell started his day Saturday in Washington, where he still maintains a residence with his wife and three children.

He headed to the airport later in the day and flew to his home state of California. The feds were waiting for him when he stepped off the plane.

According to sources, Swalwell was cooperative.

The following day, neither he nor his wife Brittany Watts were home when the feds rolled up to their property in Northeast DC.

Swalwell, 45, faces multiple sexual assault allegations.

At least four women have made sexual misconduct allegations, including a former staffer who claimed the married politician raped her twice when she was too intoxicated to consent in 2019 and 2024.

Another woman alleged he drugged and raped her in 2018.

Two of the women said he had sent them unsolicited pictures of his penis.

The Department of Justice launched its investigation into the disgraced former congressman in April.

Swalwell, 45, was also being investigated by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Swalwell has vehemently denied the allegation, but they nevertheless torpedoed his campaign for California governor, forcing him to drop out of a race he'd once led.

The Democrat also promptly resigned in disgrace from Congress.

He's kept a low profile ever since, including Monday when newly declassified records were released about his escapades with the Chinese spy known as 'Fang Fang.'

The White House Transparency Task Force dropped the documents, in which Swalwell admitted to the FBI that he 'occasionally hooked up' with Fang.

The Chinese national spent years cozying up to rising California Democrats, helping bundle donations for Swalwell's 2014 re-election campaign and even placing an intern in his congressional office.

Swalwell has not been accused by law enforcement of any wrongdoing in the Fang Fang scandal.

Meanwhile, he has denied any wrongdoing in connection with the sexual assault and sexual misconduct allegations. While rejecting the claims, the former lawmaker acknowledged making 'mistakes in judgment' and apologized to his wife.

While the accusations destroyed his political career and prompted calls for further investigations from both parties, the state of his 9-year-marriage remains in question.

Exclusive Daily Mail photos from May showed Watts, 41, stepping out of their DC residence without her wedding ring as her husband remained out of sight.

'Eric has been accused of horrible things. How do you live with that?' a friend of the family said at the time.

The allegations began with claims from a former staffer who alleged she was raped by Swalwell when she was too intoxicated to consent.

She told CNN that in April 2024, after a night of heavy drinking in New York City, she woke up to Swalwell having sex with her in his hotel bed.

'I was pushing him off of me, saying no,' she said, adding that it happened after she stopped working in his office. 'He didn't stop.'

At least four women have now accused the Congressman of sexual misconduct, including the former staffer.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Eric Swalwell and the Department of Justice for comment.
