PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two fired Phoenix police officers accused of carrying out a violent, unreported traffic stop in south Phoenix have been released from custody after posting bail.

Luis Vazquez Jr., 31, was released on Sunday, and Antonio Felix, 31, was released on Monday. Both are accused of what Phoenix Police Chief Matthew Giordano called “egregious criminal conduct” while on duty stemming from an incident on Aug. 5.

Details of the alleged assault

According to court documents, Vazquez and Felix pulled over a vehicle carrying a man and a woman in south Phoenix. The officers admitted they failed to report the traffic stop to dispatchers and did not activate their body-worn cameras.

Investigators say the encounter quickly turned violent when the officers forcefully removed the couple from their car. The officers then repeatedly tased, punched, and held the victims at gunpoint.

The male victim managed to break free and escape in his car during the struggle. The officers then allegedly released the woman from handcuffs, but not before issuing a chilling warning.

According to court records, one of the officers told the woman, “He’s probably going to get shot,” and warned, “We know where you live now.” The officers then abandoned the woman on the side of the road at night without her cell phone, according to prosecutors.

A lawyer for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook told the White House on Wednesday that allegations Cook committed mortgage fraud before joining the Fed are “unfounded and untrue.” As a result, attorney Abbe Lowell wrote, any effort to remove Cook from her job based on those allegations would be “corrosive of the independence that Congress sought to preserve” for the Federal Reserve Bank.

Lowell’s letter came approximately a year after William Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, sent two criminal referrals regarding Cook to the Department of Justice, and just under two months after the Supreme Court, by a vote of 5-4, rebuffed President Donald Trump’s initial attempt – citing the mortgage fraud allegations – to fire Cook. The opinion by Chief Justice John Robertsheld that “Cook was entitled to notice and some opportunity to respond” before she could be fired.

On Aug. 5, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino notified Cook that Trump was “considering” whether to remove her from the Fed, and he gave her 21 days to respond to the mortgage fraud allegations.

In Cook’s response, Lowell explained that when Cook in 2021 signed a mortgage agreement to buy a condominium in Atlanta that designated the property as her “primary” residencealthough she had signed another agreement listing her home in Michigan as her primary residence, it “was an entirely inadvertent oversight,” without any “intentional misconduct and zero intent to defraud or mislead.” Cook had gone to the lender’s website, Lowell emphasized, to get information about a mortgage for a vacation home – which, he wrote, was “a clear indication of the loan type she was looking to acquire.” Indeed, Lowell noted, the mortgage lender “knew that she had lived in Michigan for more than 15 years and worked full-time as a tenured professor at Michigan State University.” “All the information Governor Cook provided concerning her Michigan residence and employment,” Lowell stated, “indicated that she did not intend to make her Atlanta condominium her principal residence.”

The letter also pushed back against suggestions that a rental listing for theAtlanta condo provided “further proof of wrongdoing” on Cook’s part, by demonstrating that the condo was not her primary residence. Cook’s mortgage agreement did not prohibit her from renting the property, Lowell stressed. And in any event, Lowell added, “though Governor Cook briefly listed the property for rent, she ultimately decided not to rent it.”

Lowell pointed to reporting that suggests that several senior officials in the Trump administration – including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Attorney General Todd Blanche – had also “entered into ‘primary’ residence mortgages for multiple homes,” noting that those men had not been fired.

Indeed, Lowell noted, in 1993 Trump himself “reportedly acquired ‘primary’ residence mortgages for two different Florida homes just seven weeks apart.” Although Trump “signed a form attesting” that he would live in those properties for at least a year, he actually lived in New York during that time and “reportedly listed both Florida properties for rent.”

Finally, Lowell submitted an expert opinion from Kathleen Engel, a law professor at Suffolk University Law School who specializes in mortgage finance and regulations.She indicated that, based on the materials that she had reviewed, “no banking or mortgage professional can reliably conclude that” Cook received more favorable terms for either her Atlanta or Michigan mortgages because they were listed as primary residences, that either mortgage “lender relied on an allegedly false occupancy representation” in deciding to lend to Cook, or “that Dr. Cook acted with an intent to deceive.”

Two Lions Are on the Loose in Indiana and Authorities Have No Idea Where They Went

Residents in Madison County, Indiana, are on edge tonight.

Indiana authorities have announced that two lions are reportedly on the loose in Madison County.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office was first alerted about the lions on the loose after receiving a call from a man who spotted a female lion and her cub near his home.

A drone operator also called the sheriff’s office and confirmed spotting two exotic cats.

The lioness reportedly weighed about 300 pounds, while the cub was estimated to weigh roughly 150 pounds.

After a four-hour active search, which included ground units and thermal drones, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department was unable to spot the big cats.

The department has since released the following announcement: “While law enforcement has concluded the active search, residents in the area are encouraged to remain attentive and report any unusual animal sightings to local authorities immediately.”

A search is underway in central Indiana for two lions, a mother and cub, believed to be on the loose. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call around 10 a.m. Thursday from a homeowner who spotted the big cats moving through his property while looking out a back window.

“He got some binoculars, took a closer look and saw the harness on the (mother). And he watched it until it left his property moving southwest,” Sheriff John Beeman told KTLA sister station WXIN-TV. The sheriff’s department said it previously received a report from a drone operator confirming the sighting.

A recent article in The New York Times on the increasing rates of heart disease in young women (‘Why Are More Young Women Developing Heart Disease?’) was amusingly frivolous and about as fact-free as an article about health advice can be.

The key thrust of the article is that any woman who wants to preserve and improve her health should become informed of her “numbers.” Which is to say, she should know her blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and haemoglobin A1C (a measure of average blood glucose levels), which are claimed to be “important for assessing risk.”

The Times quotes Dr. Priya Freaney, director of the Women’s Heart Care programme at Northwestern Medicine: “Knowing your numbers is your most powerful tool,” [she said] “And it’s never too early to start.”

What numbers are we talking about? Well, apparently doctors recommend “all adults strive for these levels”:

BP (Blood Pressure) under 120 mm Hg / 80 mm Hg

LDL (Low-density lipoprotein) under 100 mg/dL

HbA1C (Haemoglobin A1C ) of 5.6 or lower

BMI (Body-mass index) under 25

Let’s approach these four with a bit of basic epidemiology, examining the wisdom of telling people of “average risk” to aim for these targets. Obviously, people with pre-existing conditions or those with inherently much higher or multiple risks (such as levels that are in the red flashing light category) involve a different calculus.

But for the sake of evaluating the drive to push people toward these health targets, what do the highest quality studies ultimately say about the value in chasing these numeric targets in healthy people?

Numericide Number One: Blood Pressure at 120/80

I will always remember that old quip from an ageing physician: “High blood pressure is better than no blood pressure at all.” But the question one should ask is this: If you lower your blood pressure, does it lead to a reduction in your chance of a cardiovascular event or dying?
