NEW YORK (Reuters via PiQSuite.com) -FBI agents seized New York City Mayor Eric Adams' electronic devices earlier this week, days after a raid on the home of his chief campaign fundraiser, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing two people familiar with the matter.
The devices - at least two cellphones and an iPad - were returned to Adams within a matter of days, the Times said.
Federal authorities are conducting an investigation into whether his 2021 mayoral campaign conspired with a Brooklyn construction company and the Turkish government to funnel foreign money into the campaign through a straw donor scheme, the New York Times has reported.

Bill Gates Business Associates Reach Combined $365 Million Settlement with Jeffrey Epstein’s Victims

On Thursday, a federal judge approved the $290 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by the sex abuse victims of Epstein against JPMorgan Chase—a close mutual business associate of both Gates and Epstein.
Over this past year, JPMorgan has agreed to pay an additional $75 million—for a combined total of $365 million—to settle another lawsuit relating to its established banking relationship with Epstein. The suits revealed that JPMorgan facilitated approximately $1 billion in transfers for Epstein which the bank admitted were “human trafficking” related.
Gates’s relationship with Epstein has been widely known and was even cited by Gates’s ex-wife, Melinda, in the couple’s 2021 divorce proceedings. Bill Gates has denied having any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.
Gates and Epstein’s mutual associates, James E. “Jes” Staley and JPMorgan Chase, were central to Gates’s relationship with Epstein. Gates’s close contacts with Epstein began around 2011, when he and JPMorgan were teaming up to create a global health investment fund, the activities of which are documented extensively in Controligarchs.
As a top executive at JPMorgan, Staley introduced Epstein—an important bank client—to Gates and the two hit it off. Gates flew aboard Epstein’s private jet, met with him “many times,” and visited his home on at least three occasions, despite Epstein’s 2008 conviction for solicitation of a minor, the New York Times reports.
Last year, several of Epstein’s victims and the U.S. Virgin Islands (where the pedophile financier maintained a residence) filed suit against JPMorgan, accusing the bank of enabling the illegal activities of Epstein and his network.
The litigation revealed that JPMorgan admitted to the Treasury Department that it had facilitated more than $1 billion in transfers relating to “human trafficking” by Epstein. To avoid going to trial, JPMorgan agreed to pay $290 million to Epstein’s victims and $75 million to the U.S. Virgin Islands, bringing the combined total to $365 million for these settlements.
In March 2023, JPMorgan, in turn, sued Staley, its former chief of investment banking, claiming that he should pay “the entire amount” of the litigation costs, thus effectively blaming him for the scandal. The litigation revealed that Staley allegedly “used aggressive force in his sexual assault of [anonymous victim] and informed [her] that he had Epstein’s permission to do what he wanted to her.”

With a view to ensuring a trusted and secure digital identity for all Europeans, the Council presidency and European Parliament representatives reached today a provisional agreement on a new framework for a European digital identity (eID).
With the approval of the European digital identity regulation, we are taking a fundamental step so that citizens can have a unique and secure European digital identity. This is a key advance for the European Union to be a global reference in the digital field, protecting our democratic rights and values.

The revised regulation constitutes a clear paradigm shift for digital identity in Europe aiming to ensure universal access for people and businesses to secure and trustworthy electronic identification and authentication.
Under the new law, member states will offer citizens and businesses digital wallets that will be able to link their national digital identities with proof of other personal attributes (e.g., driving licence, diplomas,bank account). Citizens will be able to prove their identity and share electronic documents from their digital wallets with a click of a button on their mobile phone.
The new European digital identity wallets will enable all Europeans to access online services with their national digital identification, which will be recognised throughout Europe, without having to use private identification methods or unnecessarily sharing personal data. User control ensures that only information that needs to be shared will be shared.
Concluding the initial provisional agreement
Since the initial provisional agreement on some of the main elements of the legislative proposal at the end of June this year, a thorough series of technical meetings followed in order to complete a text that allowed the finalisation of the file in full. Some relevant aspects agreed by the co-legislators today are:
the e-signatures:the wallet will be free to use for natural persons by default, but member states may provide for measures to ensure that the free-of-charge use is limited to non-professional purposes
the wallet’s business model: the issuance, use and revocation will be free of charge for all natural persons
the validation of electronic attestation of attributes: member states shall provide free-of-charge validation mechanisms only to verify the authenticity and validity of the wallet and of the relying parties’ identity
the code for the wallets:the application software components will be open source, but member states are granted necessary leeway so that, for justified reasons, specific components other than those installed on user devices may not be disclosed
consistency between the wallet as an eID means and the underpinning scheme under which it is issued has been ensured
Finally, the revised law clarifies the scope of the qualified web authentication certificates (QWACs), which ensures that users can verify who is behind a website, while preserving the current well-established industry security rules and standards.

The $35.8 million U.S. troop facility, not publicly announced or previously reported, was obliquely referenced in an August 2 contract announcement by the Pentagon. Though the Defense Department has taken pains to obscure the site’s true nature — describing it in other records merely as a “classified worldwide” project — budget documents reviewed by The Intercept reveal that it is part of Site 512. “Sometimes something is treated as an official secret not in the hope that an adversary would never find out about it but rather [because] the U.S. government, for diplomatic or political reasons, does not want to officially acknowledge it,” Paul Pillar, a former chief analyst at the CIA’s counterterrorism center who said he had no specific knowledge of the base, told The Intercept. “In this case, perhaps the base will be used to support operations elsewhere in the Middle East in which any acknowledgment that they were staged from Israel, or involved any cooperation with Israel, would be inconvenient and likely to elicit more negative reactions than the operations otherwise would elicit.”
Rare acknowledgment of the U.S. military presence in Israel came in 2017, when the two countries inaugurated a military site that the U.S. government-funded Voice of America deemed “the first American military base on Israeli soil.” Israeli Air Force’s Brig. Gen. Tzvika Haimovitch called it “historic.” He said, “We established an American base in the State of Israel, in the Israel Defense Forces, for the first time.”
A day later, the U.S. military denied that it was an American base, insisting that it was merely a “living facility” for U.S. service members working at an Israeli base.
The U.S. military employs similar euphemistic language to characterize the new facility in Israel, which its procurement records describe as a “life support area.” Such obfuscation is typical of U.S. military sites the Pentagon wants to conceal. Site 512 has previously been referred to as a “cooperative security location”: a designation that is intended to confer a low-cost, light footprint presence but has been applied to bases that, as The Intercept has previously reported, can house as many as 1,000 troops.
Site 512, however, wasn’t established to contend with a threat to Israel from Palestinian militants but the danger posed by Iranian mid-range missiles.

According to the New York Times, FBI agents climbed into Adams's SUV with him and seized his cellphones and an iPad.
"The agents approached the mayor on the street and asked his security detail to step away, one of the people said. They climbed into his S.U.V. with him," the NYT reported.
Earlier in the month, Adams's top fundraiser Brianna Suggs was raided by the FBI over the allegations that the Turkish government was funneling money to Adams's campaign.
Federal investigators are also looking into whether or not Adams or his team gave any special benefit to Turkey in exchange for the alleged donations.
When the initial raid took place on Suggs, Adams had just landed in Washington D.C. to meet with White House officials about the ongoing migrant crisis.
Upon news of the raid on Suggs, Adams immediately cancelled the meeting and flew back to New York City.

Days after a raid at Mr. Adams’s chief fund-raiser’s home, federal agents took the mayor’s phones and iPad, two people with knowledge of the matter said.
F.B.I. agents seized Mayor Eric Adams’s electronic devices early this week in what appeared to be a dramatic escalation of a federal corruption investigation into whether his 2021 campaign conspired with the Turkish government and others to funnel money into its coffers, two people with knowledge of the matter said.
The agents approached the mayor on the street on Monday and asked his security detail to step away, one of the people said. They climbed into his S.U.V. with him and, pursuant to a court-authorized warrant, took his devices, the person said. The devices — at least two cellphones and an iPad — were returned to the mayor within a matter of days, the people said. Law enforcement investigators with a search warrant can make copies of the data on devices after they seize them.
A lawyer for Mr. Adams and his campaign said in a statement that the mayor had “immediately complied with the F.B.I.’s request and provided them with electronic devices” after an event on Monday.
The lawyer, Boyd Johnson, noted that Mr. Adams has not been accused of wrongdoing and was cooperating with federal authorities.
“After learning of the federal investigation, it was discovered that an individual had recently acted improperly,” Mr. Johnson said. “In the spirit of transparency and cooperation, this behavior was immediately and proactively reported to investigators.”
The statement did not identify the individual, detail the conduct reported to authorities or make clear whether the reported misconduct was related to the seizure of the mayor’s devices. It was also not immediately clear whether the agents referred to the fund-raising investigation when they took the mayor’s devices.
Mr. Adams, in his own statement, said that “as a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation — and I will continue to do exactly that.” He added that he had “nothing to hide.”
The surprise seizure of Mr. Adams’s devices was an extraordinary development and appeared to be the first direct instance of the campaign contribution investigation touching the mayor. Mr. Adams, a retired police captain, said on Wednesday that he is so strident in urging his staff to “follow the law” that he can be almost “annoying.” He laughed at the notion that he had any potential criminal exposure.
Spokesmen for the F.B.I. and the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, whose prosecutors are also investigating the matter, declined to comment.
The federal investigation into Mr. Adams’s campaign burst into public view on Nov. 2, when F.B.I. agents searched the home of the mayor’s chief fund-raiser and seized two laptop computers, three iPhones and a manila folder labeled “Eric Adams.”
The fund-raiser, a 25-year-old former intern named Brianna Suggs, has not spoken publicly since the raid.
Mr. Adams responded to news of the raid by abruptly returning from Washington, D.C., where he had only just arrived for a day of meetings with White House and congressional leaders regarding the migrant influx, an issue he has said threatens to “destroy New York City.”
On Wednesday, he said his abrupt return was driven by his desire to be present for his team, and out of concern for Ms. Suggs, who he said had gone through a “traumatic experience.”
“Although I am mayor, I have not stopped being a man and a human,” he said.
But he also said he did not speak with Ms. Suggs on the day of the raid, to avoid any appearance of interfering in an ongoing investigation.

The warrant obtained by the F.B.I. to search Ms. Suggs’s home sought evidence of a conspiracy to violate campaign finance law between members of Mr. Adams’s campaign, the Turkish government or Turkish nationals, and a Brooklyn-based developer, KSK Construction, whose owners are originally from Turkey. The warrant also sought records about donations from Bay Atlantic University, a Washington, D.C., college whose founder is Turkish and is affiliated with a school Mr. Adams visited when he went to Turkey as Brooklyn borough president in 2015.
The warrant, reviewed by The New York Times, indicated authorities were looking at whether the Turkish government or Turkish nationals funneled donations to Mr. Adams using a so-called straw donor scheme, in which the contributors listed were not the actual source of the money. The warrant also inquired about Mr. Adams’s campaign’s use of New York City’s generous public matching program, in which New York City offers an eight-to-one match of the first $250 of a resident’s donation.
The federal authorities also sought evidence of whether any Adams campaign member provided any benefit to Turkey or the construction company in exchange for campaign donations.
This is not the first time Mr. Adams or people in his orbit have attracted law enforcement scrutiny. In September, Eric Ulrich, Mr. Adams’s former buildings commissioner and senior adviser, was indicted by the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, on 16 felony charges, including counts of bribetaking and conspiracy.
In July, Mr. Bragg indicted six people, including a retired police inspector who once worked and socialized with Mr. Adams, on charges of conspiring to funnel illegal donations to the mayor’s 2021 campaign.
Separately, the city’s Department of Investigation was investigating the role of Timothy Pearson, one of the mayor’s closest advisers, in a violent altercation at a migrant center in Manhattan.
Mr. Adams has also had skirmishes with the law before becoming mayor. Soon after he was elected Brooklyn borough president, he organized an event to raise money for a new nonprofit, One Brooklyn, which had not yet registered with the state. The invitation list was based on donor rolls for nonprofits run by his predecessor, records show.
A city Department of Investigation inquiry concluded Mr. Adams and his nonprofit appeared to have improperly solicited funding from groups that either had or would soon have matters pending before his office. Mr. Adams’s office emphasized to investigators that the slip-ups had occurred early in his administration and promised to comply with the law going forward.
Earlier, while Mr. Adams was a New York state senator, the state inspector general found that he and other Senate Democrats had fraternized with lobbyists and accepted significant campaign contributions from people affiliated with contenders for a video lottery contract at Aqueduct Racetrack.
In response to a Times examination of his fund-raising record in 2021, Mr. Adams attributed the scrutiny in part to his race.
“Black candidates for office are often held to a higher, unfair standard — especially those from lower-income backgrounds such as myself,” he said in a statement then. “No campaign of mine has ever been charged with a serious fund-raising violation, and no contribution has ever affected my decision-making as a public official.” He added: “I did not go from being a person that enforced the law to become one that breaks the law.”
Mr. Adams is not the first city mayor whose fund-raising has attracted federal scrutiny. In 2017, federal prosecutors examined episodes in which Bill de Blasio, who was then the mayor, or his surrogates sought donations from people seeking favors from the city, and then made inquiries to city agencies on their behalf.
In deciding not to bring charges, the acting United States attorney, Joon H. Kim, cited “the particular difficulty in proving criminal intent in corruption schemes where there is no evidence of personal profit.” Mr. de Blasio received a warning letter about those activities from the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board.

ATLANTA – Actor Rob Lowe secretly signed an agreement with Fulton County court officials that will keep him from facing charges stemming from a videotape he allegedly made of sex acts involving a teenage girl, authorities said Saturday.
Lowe was under investigation for possible violations of Georgia laws prohibiting sexual exploitation of a minor, an offense that carries a prison term of up to 20 years.
The actor is accused of making a videotape of sex acts in his hotel room involving a 16-year-old girl when he was in Atlanta last July for the Democratic National Convention. The girl's mother has sued Lowe over the incident.
Lowe slipped quietly into Atlanta Friday with his father and two lawyers. They talked with Fulton County District Attorney Lewis Slaton, who said he wanted to interview Lowe in person.
'We wanted to talk to him to make sure that we had his attention and we determined that we did have his attention,' Slaton said. 'We wanted to make sure that this was not going to be a joke to somebody, and we concluded that it was not.'
Slaton said he was satisfied with his interview with the 25-year-old 'brat-pack' movie star, and his case was referred to the county's Pre-Trial Intervention Project, a program to keep young first-time offenders out of prison.
Slaton said Lowe was not required to admit guilt, but he did sign an agreement to perform 20 hours of community service work and to 'stay out of trouble,' for two years. In exchange, Fulton County officials will not prosecute the young actor.
The interview was held in a Pre-Trial Intervention Project office in south Atlanta, away from Slaton's downtown courthouse office, to avoid detection by the news media.
Officials said Lowe agreed to perform his community service work in California, where he lives, and in his home state of Ohio, traveling to schools to talk about the dangers of drug abuse.
The agreement Lowe signed does not affect the lawsuit against him filed by Arlene Wilson, the mother of the girl, Jan Parsons.
After the meeting with officials, Lowe and his father drove to the Atlanta airport and left town aboard a private plane.
Lowe reportedly met Parsons at an Atlanta nightclub near the convention hall. Wilson's lawsuit claims Lowe enticed her daughter to have sex with another woman while Lowe videotaped the encounter in the hotel room.
The girl has been accused of trying to use the tape to blackmail Lowe for $2 million.
Lowe's lawyers would not comment on the case Saturday.

White House backs Biden amid plummeting support
Polling data appears to show more and more voters siding with Donald Trump ahead of next year’s presidential election
The White House has dismissed calls for Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 US election race, as polling data continues to show him ceding ground to potential Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Despite strong Democratic performances in state elections this week, some top voices within the party have openly questioned if Biden can defeat Trump at the ballot box next year, particularly after polls showed him trailing the possible GOP candidate in several key battleground states.
“I love Joe Biden,” Ohio’s former Democratic congressman Tim Ryan told CNN on Monday.“He’s done a great service to this country. He saved the country from Donald Trump. But now it’s time for us to just take the next step.”
Results of a New York Times/Siena College poll released last Sunday likely made for grim reading in the Democratic halls of power. Biden is currently trailing GOP frontrunner Trump in five out of six battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania, it said. He currently retains a lead over Trump in the sixth, Wisconsin. His victory in all six was crucial to his 2020 electoral triumph over Trump.
Similarly, a CNN poll on Thursday showed Trump stretching his lead over Biden in the overall, though still hypothetical, electoral race by a margin of 49% to 45% – a large increase from a virtual tie between the two in late-August.
Ryan’s worries were echoed by David Axelrod, a former senior adviser in Barack Obama’s administration. “Only Joe Biden can make this decision,” he wrote on social media on Sunday. “If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s.”
However, publicly at least, the White House appeared keen this week to allay concerns about Biden’s electability, arguing that state election victories by Democrats this week are de-facto endorsements of Biden’s presidency.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday that Kentucky governor Andy Beshear’s success at the polls on Wednesday was due to the “Biden-Beshear agenda.”
“Beshear ran on infrastructure, he ran on lowering costs,” Jean-Pierre said. “Those are the president’s agenda,” adding “we have always said that voting matters and polls do not.”
But, in what will be a concern for Democrats and the Biden administration as a whole, the polls appear to reflect discontent about Biden’s handling of the economy, rising costs and US foreign policy.
Perhaps most worryingly, though, the CNN poll showed that only a quarter of respondents believed that Biden, who turns 81 this month, has the necessary sharpness and stamina required to be commander-in-chief. (The WH has been running “Weekend with Bernie for close to three years, they could actually do the same with a dead body.)

As a student leader in Malaysia in the late 1960s, Anwar Ibrahim championed the cause of the Palestinians. Now as prime minister, his moves to stoke anti-Israel sentiment are endearing him to a voting block pivotal to the survival of his government.
After scraping through with a majority following last year’s hung parliament, Anwar has become Asia’s most outspoken leader in railing against Israel and its backers in the U.S. and Europe. He called the military action in Gaza the "height of barbarism” at a rally last month, and on Tuesday he told parliament that Malaysia will continue to back Hamas despite the threat of U.S. sanctions.
"Palestine is colonized through apartheid, ethnic cleansing and now genocide,” Anwar told lawmakers. "Whatever happened is the legitimate right and struggle of the Palestinian people.”
"All parties and members of the public should show solidarity in the issue of Palestine, rather than using it for politics,” he added.
Anwar sees his fiery stance against Israel as helping Malaysia both on the world stage and politically at home, according to a Foreign Ministry official familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified. His multiracial coalition has increasingly been challenged by a pro-Islamic opposition appealing to the nation’s Malay majority.
The comments are contributing to growing anger in Malaysia, where citizens have held street protests over the Israel-Hamas war and boycotted fast-food establishments seen to have ties to Israel. The government is concerned about ensuring there are no attacks on restaurants or elsewhere, according to a Home Ministry official who asked not to be named.
Malaysia’s Home Ministry and Foreign Ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment.
"Anwar has basically used the Palestine issue to try to shore up his Islamist credentials,” said Bridget Welsh, an honorary research associate with the University of Nottingham Asia Research Institute Malaysia, who compared him to his arch-rival and former premier Mahathir Mohamad. "It’s interesting to see how many pages he’s taking from Mahathir’s playbook in his first year in office, one of which is making this issue is about him fighting for Palestine.”
Last year, Anwar rose to power promising to temper religious and racial tensions. But since then he’s taken on more pro-Islamic views to appeal to ethnic Malays who are Muslim by law, expanding the role of the federal agency overseeing Islamic affairs and briefly supporting restrictions on the use of the word "Allah” by non-Muslims.
An opinion survey by pollster Ilham Center across six Malay states showed Anwar had an approval rating of just 24% among ethnic Malays in July, while state elections the following month saw the opposition Perikatan Nasional walk away with a landslide win in three Malay-majority states. Its chairman and former premier, Muhyiddin Yassin, said the result was a sign that the people wanted change.

‘Not apologetic’
Malaysia has also kept communication open with leaders of Hamas. In 2011, government leaders including the current deputy prime minister helped launch a Palestinian cultural organization affiliated with Hamas, which the U.S. has designated as a terrorist organization.
"We host the cultural society organization belonging to Hamas — we know it and we are not apologetic about it,” former Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah told Bloomberg News last week. "We are not apologetic and we don’t consider Hamas as a terrorist organization.”
Last week, Mahathir posted a video of a conversation with Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in which Mahathir describes the war as a "genocide” designed to kill as many Palestinians as possible. Haniyeh asks the 98-year-old to help sway Western and Israeli narratives, which are equating Hamas with ISIS.
Anwar’s own stance on the matter is starting to put him at odds with another major policy objective: drawing in new investment from the U.S. Several months ago, Anwar met with Elon Musk in a bid to lure big tech to Malaysia. During a trip to the U.S. in September, he also met with top executives from Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Boeing. The U.S. and Malaysia boast bilateral investment and trade totaling $1.6 trillion annually, according to government data.
Often regarded as a moderate voice for Islam in the West, Anwar said last week that Washington has already censured the Southeast Asian nation for taking a hard line against Israel’s actions. The rhetoric has also raised the stakes for American companies with bases in Malaysia.
After footage spread on social media showing McDonald’s Corp. stores in Israel distributing meals to soldiers, Malaysia’s subsidiary of the fast-food chain swiftly responded by writing in a statement that it’s 100% Muslim-owned and the incident doesn’t reflect its values. Starbucks Corp. has faced similar pressure over its alleged support of Israel. Starbucks did not answer an email requesting comment.
While there is no imminent threat to Anwar’s government, infighting within political coalitions has seen four different prime ministers since the 2018 elections. And with tensions riding high over religious issues, that makes his alignment on the war all the more important, said Joseph Liow Chin Yong, a chair of comparative and international politics at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
"If you are not aligned with the mood on the ground,” he said. "You are in trouble.”

Starting on Thursday footage began widely circulating online showing IDF troops holding an Israeli flag raising ceremony, laying stake to conquered areas of the Strip. In a short speech during the ceremony on a Gaza beach, just prior to leading troops in the national anthem, an IDF soldier said "this is our land" and told his forces they are leading the way for Jews "to return to our lands."
Following this highly provocative scene, on Friday Iran issued a new warning, saying that Israel's expansion of its operations and attacks on Gaza hospitals and other provocative acts make an expansion of the scope of the war "inevitable".
Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian conveyed the statement in a phone call with Qatar's prime minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, according to state media.
“Due to the expansion of the intensity of the war against Gaza’s civilian residents, expansion of the scope of the war has become inevitable,” Amirabdollahian said. He separately posted to X that "time is running out" for Israel, and stated, "The only benefit of Netanyahu was that he made the foundations of the fake Israeli regime more shaky and showed the criminal, violent, and aggressive face of the Zionist regime in the massacre of women and children in Gaza."

The FBI seized NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ cellphones and iPad amid a federal corruption investigation related to his 2021 campaign.
Last Thursday, The Gateway Pundit reported that the FBI conducted a raid on the Brooklyn residence of Brianna Suggs, the chief fundraiser for New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Brianna Suggs has been instrumental in raising funds for Adams’ campaigns, amassing over $2.5 million for his 2025 re-election bid, according to the Daily Mail.
The Feds raided Suggs’ home last week and came out with a cardboard box.
The FBI seized Mayor Eric Adams’ electronics early this week as part of a federal corruption probe tied to his 2021 campaign, The Post has learned.
The feds seized the devices in connection to an investigation into whether Hizzoner’s campaign colluded with the Turkish government and others to direct money into his mayoral effort, sources told The Post, after the news was first reported by the New York Times.
Agents reportedly approached Adams, 63, on the street and asked his security team to step aside, a source told the Times.

Who could have seen that coming?
After a disastrous 30Y bond auction this week, a collapse in Treasury market liquidity, and an accelerating rise in the market's perception of the United States' credit risk, Moody's has just cut its outlook on US credit ratings to negative from stable. The key driver of the outlook change to negative is Moody's assessment that the downside risks to the US' fiscal strength have increased and may no longer be fully offset by the sovereign's unique credit strengths.
In the context of higher interest rates, without effective fiscal policy measures to reduce government spending or increase revenues, Moody's expects that the US' fiscal deficits will remain very large, significantly weakening debt affordability.
Continued political polarization within US Congress raises the risk that successive governments will not be able to reach consensus on a fiscal plan to slow the decline in debt affordability.
Moody's does affirm the Aaa rating:
The affirmation of the Aaa ratings reflects Moody's view that the US' formidable credit strengths continue to preserve the sovereign's credit profile.
* First, Moody's expects the US to retain its exceptional economic strength. Further positive growth surprises over the medium term could at least slow the deterioration in debt affordability.
* Second, the US' institutional and governance strength is also very high, supported in particular by monetary and macroeconomic policy effectiveness. While the adjustment of the US economy and financial sector to higher-for-longer interest rates is underway, policymakers have facilitated the transition through transparent and effective policy.
* Finally, the unique and central roles of the US dollar and Treasury bond market in the global financial system provide extraordinary funding capacity and significantly reduce the risk of a sudden spiraling of funding costs, which is particularly relevant in the context of high debt levels and weakening debt affordability.
The US' long-term local- and foreign-currency country ceilings remain unchanged at Aaa.. The Aaa local-currency ceiling reflects a small government footprint in the economy, relatively predictable and reliable institutions, very low external imbalances and moderate political risks, all of which reduce the risks posed to non-government issuers by government actions or shocks that would commonly affect the government and the private sector. The foreign-currency ceiling at Aaa reflects the country's strong policy effectiveness and open capital account which reduce transfer and convertibility risks to minimal levels.
The market - late on a Friday - pushed yields on the 2Y and 5Y Treasyr notes to fresh new highs for the day.
Five minutes later, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo comments in emailed statement to Bloomberg:
“While the statement by Moody’s maintains the United States’ Aaa rating, we disagree with the shift to a negative outlook. The American economy remains strong, and Treasury securities are the world’s preeminent safe and liquid asset” “The Biden administration has demonstrated its commitment to fiscal sustainability,(Bwahahaha)including through the more than $1 trillion in deficit reduction included in the June debt-limit deal as well as President Biden’s budget proposals that would reduce the deficit by nearly $2.5 trillion over the next decade”

Whistleblowers: FBI officials singled out agents who were former military for anti-Trump retaliation
More whistleblowers have stepped forward to tell Congress that high-ranking FBI officials are targeting agents for their political beliefs and trying to force them out of the bureau, specifically going after former military members.
The Marine Corps and other military veterans at the FBI are being accused of being disloyal to the U.S. because they fit the profile of a supporter of former President Donald Trump, according to two new disclosures sent to lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee.
The Washington Times obtained copies of the disclosures.
The whistleblowers said FBI Security Division Deputy Assistant Director Jeffrey Veltri and Assistant Section Chief Dena Perkins specifically went after bureau employees who served as Marines or in other military branches
They retaliated against the agents by stripping them of security clearance, which sidelines them on the job and pushes them toward the exit, according to the disclosures.
The whistleblower disclosures charge that Mr. Veltri and Ms. Perkins either declared or attempted to declare the Marine and other veterans as “disloyal to the United States of America.”
“In these cases there was no indication that any of the individuals had any affiliation to a foreign power or held any belief against the United States,” it said.
Ms. Perkins and Mr. Veltri also considered not wearing masks, refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccination, and participating in religious activities showed that an employee was a “right-wing radical and disloyal to the United States.”
In another instance, Ms. Perkins attempted to revoke a security clearance of a bureau employee she knew was a Marine veteran, but information showed that the initial allegations against the employee were unfounded, the disclosure says.
This did not stop Ms. Perkins from ordering her investigators to canvass at least 10 police departments where the employee lived to find out if the FBI employee had any allegations lodged against him.
“During the process, Perkins was attempting to provide evidence so she could terminate this employee because he was ‘Disloyal to the United States,’” the disclosure states.
“An employee advised that at least two of the publicly known FBI whistleblowers were former members of the military, specifically … Kyle Seraphin and Garret O’Boyle,” according to one of the disclosures.
Another FBI whistleblower disclosure sent to the Judiciary Committee included an accusation from a Security Division employee who said the security clearance investigation of Mr. Seraphin did not follow the policy guidelines of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.
