The Financial Times reported on Good Friday that “more than 65 leading UK scientists” had signed an open letter, published as a Google Doc, urging the Government to abandon new North Sea oil and gas drilling in favour of renewables.

“Here is the scientific establishment speaking with one voice,” the FT tells us, warning against the supposed folly of extracting what remains of Britain’s hydrocarbon resources and to choose renewables that, according to the scientist-signatories, provide both energy security and “cheaper solutions [that] we have already, that we know work”.

Also on Good Friday, Catherine McBride OBE — co-author of the recently published report for the Great British Business Council on Britain’s climate policy-induced de-industrialisation and a plan to reverse it — published a Substack article on X titled ‘What the Greens, most MPs and the FT don’t understand about the North Sea oil and gas‘. Ms McBride and her co-authors have little time for the sheer illiteracy of the Greens and mainstream media in economic and energy issues related to the UK government’s punitive taxes on North Sea oil and gas production.

To point out that the “FT is nothing more than the Guardian with stock prices these days”, a “once mighty publications fallen into the abyss of wokery” would be only to shoot the messenger bearing the familiar pink newsprint. Let’s now turn to the message itself, lest one stand accused of employing ad hominem tactics.

What the so-called ‘consensus’ scientists say

The open letter from the 65 “scientists” declares with solemn authority: “Extracting North Sea fossil fuels will threaten lives and livelihoods.” It asserts that “around 90% of North Sea oil and gas has already been extracted”, that additional production “is unlikely to move prices”, and that the world already possesses “more global reserves of oil and gas than we can safely burn if we are to limit global temperature rise to below 2°C”.

Of course, the usual fire and brimstone warnings of climate damnation apply if we refuse to abide by ‘the Science’.

We will soon exceed the ambitious 1.5°C Paris goal. Any overshoot pushes our climate further out of balance, threatening catastrophic tipping points, including ones that could plunge the UK into a much colder climate in which we would struggle even to grow our own food.

As per the usual climate sermon, warnings of Armageddon are followed by promises of salvation: “As climate scientists, we urge leaders to look to the cheaper solutions we have already, that we know work.”

It is curious that the letter refers to “tipping points” that could plunge the UK into a much colder climate which they say would destroy British agriculture. Apparently, the climate scientists like to cover all bases, global warming or cooling.

The layman, conditioned by years of mainstream media headlines proclaiming scientific unanimity on climate matters, is meant to nod along. After all, so many experts cannot be wrong!

Yet this is precisely the illusion that the late Michael Crichton dissected so ruthlessly on scientific consensus. Genuine science advances through falsification and debate, not through petitions or press releases:

Let’s be clear. The work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus. …There is no such thing as consensus science. If it’s consensus, it isn’t science. If it’s science, it isn’t consensus. Period.

The North Sea letter is not a scientific paper. It is a political intervention dressed in lab coats. It reveals a familiar pattern: selective data, economic illiteracy and a refusal to confront the scale of global emissions realities — above all, those of China. Like China, other large developing countries such as India, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Bangladesh are stepping up generation of coal-fired power to offset Liquified Natural Gas shortages created by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Even Germany, the world’s leading proponent of renewable energy, is seriously considering reopening some of its coal-fired power stations in response to the energy crisis caused by the war with Iran.

The rest are listed with generic “Dr” or “Prof” titles, or none at all, attached to affiliations ranging from the NHS and Wiltshire Psychology Service to community energy groups, wildlife trusts and independent roles. Several entries provide no qualifications whatsoever. This is not the roster of a disinterested scientific academy. It is a coalition of activists, communicators and academics from adjacent or non-empirical fields, many of whom have long signalled their alignment with Net Zero orthodoxy.

The letter’s primary coordinator, Dr Ella Gilbert — a climate scientist and presenter at the University of Reading’s Meteorology Department with ties to the environmental NGO Climate Outreach – has been openly described in multiple reports as the driving force behind its circulation. Professor Ed Hawkins of the same institution played a key initiating role, posting on LinkedIn to solicit signatures and stating he had “written an open letter”. There is no public evidence of external financial direction or sponsorship; the effort appears to have been an internal academic-network exercise amplified through professional channels. Official NSTA data as of end-2024 records 47.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) produced historically from the UK Continental Shelf, with 2.9 billion BOE of proven and probable (2P) reserves and a further 6.2 billion BOE in contingent resources—roughly 19% of what has already been extracted still potentially accessible.

Presumably the reference is to the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas fields in the North Sea, with Rosebank being the largest untapped oil field in UK waters. Both are in advanced stages of development with significant infrastructure already in place and first oil could be delivered to shore by the end of 2026.

The open letter was launched in time to influence the debate over whether Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, should allow new production from the fields. He is under growing pressure to allow new production in the North Sea to combat what some call ‘the energy crisis’ sparked by the Iran war. Rachel Reeves has backed more North Sea drilling in a potential split with Miliband. The Chancellor said she was “very happy” to back exploration at Rosebank oilfield and Jackdaw gas field. Miliband, Labour’s chief Net Zero ideologue, is expected to make a decision on whether to grant licences for the two fields.

The Telegraph expects Miliband to block North Sea oil drilling, stating that he is “said to be unwavering in his opposition despite impending fuel shortages and surging oil prices”. In this, of course, Miliband is true to his “Mad Ed” designation, fiercely devoted to the UK’s immiserating “global climate leadership” role.

Yesterday (15), Russia’s Ministry of Defense warned that the European ​plans to step up drone supplies to Ukraine will bring ‌those countries into an actual kinetic war with Russia.

A number of EU countries have decided to increase ​the production and supply of drones to Ukraine, the Russian MoD believes, a ​move that is escalating ⁠the conflict.

Reuters reported:

“[The Russian MoD] published a list of factories and enterprises in ​several European countries it alleges manufacture drones or drone components, ​and gave their addresses, including sites in Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy, Israel and Poland, among others.

‘The European public should not only have a clear ​understanding of the true causes of the threats to their ​security, but also be aware of the addresses and locations of Ukrainian and ‌joint ⁠enterprises producing UAVs and components for Ukraine within their own countries’, it said.”

“Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, said in a subsequent post on X ​that the list ​published by ⁠the military amounted to a list of potential targets for Russia’s armed forces.”

This is a serious escalation, not a ‘warning’ or a ‘hint’, but rather an open announcement of ‘imminent strikes’.

NATO accused of propaganda after meeting producers – Guardian

NATO is holding closed-door consultations with TV and film industry professionals across Europe and the US, The Guardian reported on Sunday. The move has prompted accusations that the bloc is working to leverage the arts for “fear mongering” and “propaganda,” it added.

The military bloc has held three private meetings with directors, producers and screenwriters in Los Angeles, Brussels and Paris, and is planning to convene with members of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) in London next month, the newspaper wrote.

The upcoming meeting will be overseen by the British think tank Chatham House and will discuss the “evolving security situation in Europe and beyond,” according to the report. NATO cyber and innovation technology deputy head James Appathurai is expected to attend, among other officials, the newspaper added.

So far, the conversations have partly “inspired” at least “three separate projects,” The Guardian wrote, citing an internal WGGB e-mail.

The military bloc’s move has reportedly sparked concern in the film and TV industry. The planned meeting is “clearly propaganda,” Irish film writer Alan O’Gorman said, as cited by The Guardian.

“I think there’s fearmongering throughout Europe at the moment that our defenses are down,” he reportedly said, adding that he has seen a media and government push in Ireland “to present NATO in a positive light and align ourselves with them.”

Other screenwriters were “pretty offended that art would be used in a way that was supporting war” and believed they were being asked to “contribute towards propaganda for NATO,” he said, according to the newspaper.

The Washington-led military bloc has been undergoing a growing internal rift, with US President Donald Trump again describing NATO as a “paper tiger” after multiple member states refused to join his war on Iran in recent months. Tensions between European NATO countries and the US had already been heightened by Trump’s threats in preceding months to annex Denmark’s autonomous territory of Greenland.

The greatest threat the bloc currently faces emanates not from “external enemies,” but rather its “ongoing disintegration,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Saturday.

EU ready to crack down on Irish shipments of alumina being sent to Russia

The European Commission is preparing to restrict access to goods that Russia could use to make military equipment, such as Irish‑produced alumina, that may be indirectly feeding the Russian war machine.

An investigation, carried out by The Irish Times in collaboration with the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, found that the Aughinish Alumina plant has been shipping large volumes of alumina to smelters in Russia.

That aluminium is then sold to the Moscow-based trading company ASK. However, ASK’s 2024 customer list included more than 40 EU-sanctioned companies, many of which are owned by the Russian defence conglomerate Rostec and produce weapons, including anti-aircraft missiles, rocket systems, and long-range bombers, according to sanctions listings.

The investigation could not trace a specific batch of Aughinish alumina to a particular weapon because their alumina is blended with alumina from other sources during smelting. But customs and trade data show that since 2023, more than half of the plant’s alumina exports have gone to smelters owned by Rusal in Russia. After processing, those smelters have sold over $650m of aluminium to ASK, which in turn serves sanctioned Russian defence companies.

David O’Sullivan, a former Irish ambassador and the EU’s chief sanctions envoy, told The Irish Times the findings of an investigation into shipments from the Aughinish Alumina plant in Limerick to Russian smelters were “worrying”.

He said the EU would continue to undermine Moscow’s ability to wage its “war of aggression” against Ukraine, including by “restricting access to commodities that could be processed and then used for the production of military equipment”.

O’Sullivan is also pushing companies to conduct deeper due diligence, saying “the company should undertake a review” to ensure its products are not finding their way into the Russian military machine.

Alumina itself is not currently covered by EU sanctions, even though the bloc banned imports of Russian‑made aluminium in February 2025 to cut off a key revenue stream for Moscow’s war. Bilateral trade between the EU and Russia has fallen by 75% since 2022, but alumina exports from Aughinish to Russia have doubled over the same period, and they remain fully legal under EU rules.

Pressure on the European Commission has grown in the European Parliament. European Parliament vice president Pina Picierno has written to the Commission asking whether alumina will be included in the next sanctions package on Russia, arguing it is “unacceptable that, while the EU funds Ukraine’s defence, a Russian‑owned company operates undisturbed within a member state, supplying the Kremlin’s military industry.”

Furthermore, a group of 39 MEPs have also written to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, and the European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, demanding that the EU stop the “export of aluminium products to the Russian defence industry” and further review the findings of the investigation.

Irish prime minister Micheál Martin said there will be no change in state support for Aughinish, which is the EU’s largest alumina refinery and supplies 37% of the bloc’s smelter‑grade alumina and employs hundreds locally.

“There are no restrictions on Aughinish Alumina, and there haven’t been, and Europe hasn’t proposed them,” Martin said. “If there were severe restrictions, it would be devastating for Aughinish and all those working there as well.”

He added that the government is “keeping everything under review” and working with EU partners, noting that alumina is a vital commodity for civilian industries across Europe. Aughinish told local media that it is operating in compliance with all EU laws, describing alumina and aluminium as “basic commodities” that serve broad societal needs.

EU Spin Meets Brutal Reality: Everything They Said Was Wrong

Wind and solar as a substitute to fossile fuels and nuclear are intermittent jokes. Their real system costs – backup, grid overhauls, distribution nightmares – make them the most expensive energy sources on the planet. They aren’t “displacing” fossil fuels at scale. They’re expensive add-ons.

The EU’s own data and global stats confirm it: The “renewable revolution” is a subsidy-sucking mirage. Emissions are still rising. The world is not on the low-carbon path these models assumed. RCP8.5 wasn’t killed by green virtue – it was always detached from how humans actually use energy.

Yet the EU’s regulatory edifice stands untouched

Every impact assessment, every adaptation plan, every scare-mongering communication citing this garbage remains official gospel. Why? The Government has signed up to a legally binding target to cut the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by 87% by 2040, Ed Miliband has announced.

The rather bland press release from the DESNZ states:

Families and businesses across the UK will continue to reap the benefits of the clean energy transition, as the Government sets a new emissions target to further protect family finances, grow the economy and tackle the climate crisis.

As Britain faces its second fossil fuel price shock in five years due to the war in Iran, the Government is pursuing policies which deliver tangible improvements to the lives of working people – centred on getting Britain off the rollercoaster of fossil fuel markets and onto clean homegrown power.

Today (Tuesday June 2nd) the Government has set out its proposed level for the seventh Carbon Budget, which sets a science-led target of ~87% emissions reduction in the period 2038 to 2042 – endorsed by the Environmental Audit Committee and the Climate Change Committee.

It comes as an independent report from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, supported by analysis from the Confederation of British Industries Economics, today shows that the Net Zero economy supports over one million jobs in the UK, adding £105 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the UK economy in 2025 alone, as it continues to thrive as one of the UK’s fastest- growing economic sectors.

The new target is based on evidence-based assumptions about how the country will take a consumer choice-led approach to the adoption of technologies such as solar, batteries and EVs that will cut bills for families.

It all sounds bureaucratic and, of course, it’s all for our own good. The reality, though, is that the plan, which needs Parliamentary approval, will change our lives radically and for the worse. DESNZ’s talk about “consumer choice-led” is sheer hypocrisy and is the opposite of the truth.

The cut of 87% is measured from 1990 levels, but in practical terms it means a reduction of 74% from current emissions.

Another unimaginable crime in the violence-ridden island.

Zoos are important institutions that help people know animals and learn about them, leading them to love and respect the natural world.

Zoos should not be places for crimes of opportunity.

But today, tragedy struck a Cambridgeshire zoo and led to a three-year-old boy being rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, after he was thrown into a crocodile enclosure.

The Telegraph reported:

“Police said they had arrested a 30-year-old British man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident at Johnsons Zoo, near Huntingdon, on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect and the boy, who was taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke’s hospital with serious injuries, were not believed to have known each other, officers added.”

When we learn that UK authorities are NOT divulging the identity of the suspect other than he is ‘a UK man’ is leading many to imagine that this is yet another contribution from Britain’s open borders policy.

This does not have to be the case, of course – but why else would they withhold the identity?

A man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy ended up in a crocodile enclosure has been released because he is not fit to be interviewed, police have said.

The 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been bailed while detectives from the major crimes unit conduct further inquiries, Cambridgeshire police said.

The force said officers were called to Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdonshire at 1.24pm on Thursday over “reports of an incident involving a three-year-old boy, during which he ended up in the crocodile enclosure”.

The boy was pulled out of the enclosure by staff from the zoo. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition, police said.

DI Verity McCann said: “Our inquiries are ongoing as we continue to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident. Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time.”

The 30-year-old man, who is not known to the victim, has been bailed until 18 September.

A villager, who did not want to be named, told PA Media that the zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped into the enclosure to try to save the child.

The director of the National Centre For Reptile Welfare, Chris Newman, said Johnson had shown remarkable bravery.

He told the BBC: “I know Tracey very well and she’s a lovely lady and it’s nothing more than I’d expect from her.

“She’d always put her own life at risk to save someone else. She’s an extraordinary lady and very brave.”

He said he had been told Johnson was not injured.

“She put herself in immense danger … I’m not sure if she was up and jumped in or if she was downstairs doing something with the animals when this happened,” he said.

In a statement posted on social media, the Johnsons said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today.

“Out of respect to the family, our tropical house will remain closed until further notice. If you have any questions about the incident, please direct inquiries to Cambridgeshire police constabulary.

“The rest of the site will remain open as normal.”

According to its website, the zoo is home to “over 100 fascinating animals” including African lions, Bengal tigers and crocodiles. The zoo’s two largest crocodiles are called Romeo and Cuddles, the zoo says on its Facebook page.

Charlotte Lowe, a Huntingdonshire district councillor, said she “can’t fathom” how the boy ended up in the crocodile enclosure.

Speaking outside the attraction on Thursday, Lowe, the councillor for Warboys ward, said: “I can’t fathom how it’s happened because they’ve got all the right protection and safety equipment, for want of a better word, in there.”

Ben Obese-Jecty, the MP for Huntingdon, said he had been communicating with senior officers, who were treating it as a critical incident.

“This is now a live criminal investigation and I would ask people to refrain from speculation online,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the young victim and his family during a hugely traumatic and difficult time.”
