Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has suspended his deputy, Kenny Kunene, from his role as Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport and from party political activities for one month.

The one-month suspension is pending an investigation into Kunene’s presence at the home of a suspect in the DJ Sumbody murder case during a police raid on Monday.

Kunene was found outside Katiso Molefe’s house waiting for a meeting when members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) raided Molefe’s home in Sandton.

Kunene has denied having a relationship with Molefe and says that they are not friends.

Sefoka was killed in a hail of bullets in Woodmead in November 2022.

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, three of the suspects are believed to be hitmen while one is believed to have ordered the hit.

Kunene says he was merely facilitating an exclusive interview with Molefe and a journalist from his newspaper Africa News Global.

Police have arrested businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe in connection with the murder of popular musician DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka. Molefe was taken into custody at his Sandton residence on Monday.

This is Molefe’s second arrest in a high-profile murder case. He is already out on bail for the April 2024 killing of Engineer Armand Swart in Vereeniging. In that case, he is charged alongside three alleged hitmen: Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana, and Tlego Floyd Mabusela. Ballistics experts have since linked weapons from Swart’s murder to other high-profile assassinations, intensifying scrutiny on Molefe’s alleged criminal network.

This Day in History: August 25, 1993

In 1993, an American Fulbright post-graduate, Amy Elizabeth Biehl (who was 26 years old), was dragged from her car by a 100-strong mob of youths in Gugulethu, a township just outside Cape Town, and stabbed to death. Biehl was driving three co-workers to their homes in the township, when some young men started throwing stones at her car and eventually surrounded the vehicle, shouting the Pan African Congress (PAC) militant slogan "One settler, one bullet!" Amy was pulled out of the car and when she tried to run away, she was struck on the head with a brick. Amy was beaten and stabbed to death. Her Black friends tried in vain to stop the attack by shouting that she was a comrade, but it was too late, as she was certified dead on the spot. Biehl's death occurred exactly a month after the St. James church massacre, where the Azanian People’s Liberation Army (APLA), the armed wing of the PAC, attacked the congregation during a Sunday evening service. The African National Congress (ANC) President, Nelson Mandela, said; “She (Biel) made our aspirations her own and lost her life in the turmoil of our transition as the new South Africa struggled to be born in the dying moments of apartheid. Through her, our peoples have also shared the pain of confronting a terrible past as we take the path of reconciliation and healing of our nation.”

This silencing of black people’s expression of pain still remains policed almost three decades after the democratic dispensation. Although this is the case there are those who heeded the Marecherian call, those who refuce to be silenced. Masixole Mlandu, an activist from the University of Cape Town (UCT), is one of these subversives.

Mlandu recently announced the completion of his Honours Independent Research where he argued that South Africa is a “settler colonial society, built and maintained through conquest”. In the acknowledments page he concluded with the revolutionary slogan of APLA: “One settler, one bullet.”

The ruckus began when the vice chancellor of UCT congratulated Mlaundu on the submission of his Honour paper.

As one would have expected from white people, comments criticizing Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng started pouring in and eventually UCT issued a statement where both she and the University distances itself from the language used. The statement further states that the language does not advance the vision of an inclusive university.

The Mandlu incident is not the first of its nature. When Julius Malema sang “Dubul’ Ibhunu” he was taken to court and charged with inciting violence. What I am trying to demonstrate here is that there are always consequences when the sensibilities of white people are affected.

ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's singing of the words "shoot the boer" amounted to hate speech, Judge Collin Lamont ruled in the High Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

The words undermined the dignity of people and were discriminatory and harmful.

"No justification exist allowing the words to be sung… the words were in any event not sung on a justifiable occasion."

Words are powerful weapons that could lead to disastrous actions and even genocide, Judge Lamont said.

“The words of one person inciting others…that’s how a genocide can start,” he said.

Lamont likened the songs by Malema as those sung by soldiers when they were at war.

“Soldiers in battle don’t treat the enemy as individuals but as a thing [a unit].”

Malema and a host of ANC witnesses disagreed saying it was part of the party’s history and should not be taken literally.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the chant "Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer", which has not been deemed hate speech by the courts. Ramaphosa didn't defend the chant during his meeting with US President Donald Trump last week, but stated that it's not a government policy.

Liberation movements in Africa have, over the past seven decades, campaigned for the emancipation of African countries from colonial rule.

These movements eventually succeeded in liberating their people from colonial powers, but many merely replaced external rulers with a new class of local elites. History has shown that liberation movements have largely failed to sustain progressive governance or achieve meaningful development in their countries. Today, all of them are no longer pro-people but have instead become new oppressors. Furthermore, they often serve as proxies for various international interests—from the old imperialist countries -France, UK, US, etc.- to new ones -China, Russia, etc.

Many leaders developed a sense of entitlement, believing the state owed them and their families privileged lives as a reward for their role in the struggle. This entitlement mindset remains entrenched among many former freedom fighters, who feel deserving of leadership positions—and some have gone so far as to kill political opponents to maintain power. Present-day examples of political violence linked to liberation legacies can be seen in countries like Uganda and Mozambique.

These former liberators see themselves as “eternal rulers,” unwilling to relinquish power out of fear of losing wealth and influence. Their control over security forces and electoral commissions allows them to rig elections and suppress dissent.

And so the ANC with the help of the Soviet Union learned about the principles of the People’s War that you needed to have a combination of political struggles in which propaganda would be one of the most important elements as well as violence. The violence would no longer be bomb blasts, it would be the use of terror – things like necklace executions so that people would be so afraid that they would take part in the mass protests that the ANC wanted… Then the other big part of the violence was attacks on the ANC’s black rivals both on Black Consciousness but mostly on the IFP because it was so much more influential, so much more an important rival. And of course, there was violence from the IFP side as well.”

Gradual democratization of the Soviet Union and the abolition of wars by 1987 is predicted by Israel Premier David Ben-Gurion in a statement published in the current issue of Look magazine which carries a number of interviews on the world outlook 25 years from now. Mr. Ben-Gurion’s statement reads:

“The image of the world in 1987 as traced in my imagination: The Cold War will be a thing of the past. Internal pressure of the constantly growing intelligentsia in Russia for more freedom and the pressure of the masses for raising their living standards may lead to a gradual democratization of the Soviet Union. On the other hand, the increasing influence of the workers and farmers, and the rising political importance of men of science, may transform the United States into a welfare state with a planned economy.

“Western and Eastern Europe will become a federation of autonomous states having a Socialist and democratic regime. With the exception of the USSR as a federated Eurasian state, ail other continents will become united in a world alliance, at whose disposal will be an international police force. All armies will be abolished, and there will be no more wars.

This crisis can only be resolved by a revolutionary change in the social system which will overcome these conflicts by putting an end to the colonial oppression of the African and other non-White people. The immediate and imperative interests of all sections of the South African people demand the carrying out of such a change, a national democratic revolu¬tion which will overthrow the colonialist state of White supremacy and establish an independent state of National Democracy in South Africa.

The Party stands for a unitary South African state with a Republican form of gov¬ernment. All local and national representatives in legislative bodies should be subjected both to election and recall by universal, equal, direct, adult franchise, without regard to race, colour, sex or property, educational or other qualifications whatsoever. A new people's militia and people's liberation army; composed of and led by trusted representatives of the people, must be created.

In order to ensure the rapid development of South Africa as a well balanced industrial-agricultural country, overcoming the lopsidedness caused by colonialism, to abolish unemployment, and to ensure continuously rising material and cultural standards of the people, the Party advocates the large-scale, planned development of the economy of the country, controlled and directed by the state.

In order to ensure South Africa's indepen¬dence, the Party will press for the strengthening of the state sector of the economy, particularly in the fields of heavy industry, machine tool building and fuel production. It will seek to place control of the vital sectors of the economy in the hands of the national democratic state and to correct historic injustice, by demanding the nationalisation of the mining industry, banking and monopoly industrial establishments, thus also laying the founda¬tions for the advance to socialism.

The state should encourage the widespread development of democratically administered co-operative and collective farms rather than individual peasant smallholdings.

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s crime intelligence division has intensified investigations into allegations that illegal military training camps linked to Lesotho are operating within the country.

This follows claims made earlier this week by Lesotho’s national police commissioner, Advocate Borotho Matsoso, who alleged that Basotho are being recruited for military training in South Africa.

He described the alleged activity as a growing national threat to the kingdom of Lesotho.

Speaking at a media briefing in Matsoso pointed to a group calling itself Malata Naha, which he claims is operating from South Africa.

He accused the group of spreading misinformation and attempting to destabilise peace, security, and diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries.

In response, South Africa’s national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, has confirmed in a statement that he has contacted his Lesotho counterpart to address the issue.

SAPS Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, "The two commissioners discussed the allegations made by advocate Matsoso. Both commissioners agreed that both law enforcement agencies' intelligence structures are on the ground to investigate the existence of such camps."

Mathe has urged the public to remain calm, saying authorities in both countries are closely monitoring the situation.

Authorities in the Kingdom of Lesotho insist they have credible information about Basotho undergoing military-style training in certain farms within South Africa, as part of the growing campaign to fight for the contentious land in South Africa's provinces.

The land being claimed includes parts of Free State, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Earlier this month, a Lesotho member of parliament, Dr Tshepo Lipholo, leader of the Basotho Covenant Movement, a political party that has been leading the charge in demanding the return of Lesotho’s "stolen land" which is part of current-day South Africa, was arrested and charged in the mountain kingdom.

Earlier this year, Lipholo travelled to the United Nations, where he submitted a claim that seeks to reclaim land lost during the colonial era.

Last year, a motion was put before parliament in Lesotho, seeking to reclaim large swaths of land from South Africa. The motion seeks to have the Lesotho parliament declare the entire Free State province, which borders Lesotho, and other areas in South Africa, as part of the small mountain kingdom, surrounded by South Africa.

ActionSA’s parliamentary leader, Athol Trollip, has claimed that more than 70% of patient files at Johannesburg clinics belong to foreign nationals, arguing that South Africa’s public resources are being stretched beyond capacity. The party has tabled proposed constitutional amendments aimed at addressing what it calls the country’s “growing immigration crisis.”

Speaking in an interview, Trollip explained that ActionSA’s submission to the parliamentary constitutional review committee seeks to revise the preamble of the Constitution, which states that “South Africa belongs to all who live in it.” The party argues that this clause has been misapplied to extend rights to undocumented immigrants, putting strain on healthcare, education, and housing.

“We aim to clarify that South Africa belongs to its citizens, permanent residents, and legal immigrants—not those here illegally,” Trollip said.

ActionSA’s proposal focuses on three key areas in the Bill of Rights:

1. Healthcare – Limiting access to public health services for undocumented foreigners.

2. Education – Prioritizing South African children in public schools.

3. Housing – Restricting emergency housing rights to citizens and legal residents.

The proposal is likely to face opposition from human rights groups, who argue that denying basic services to undocumented migrants could worsen public health and social instability. However, ActionSA insists that the amendments are necessary to protect citizens amid high unemployment and failing public services.

The constitutional review committee will now assess the submission, with public hearings expected in the coming months.

'We feel like our government has actually stripped away South Africans of their pride.'

The march, known as the ‘March in March’ campaign, was led by community activist Jacinta Ngobese, to submit a memorandum at the Durban City Hall in KwaZulu-Natal.

Speaking on Newzroom Afrika, Ngobese said residents were frustrated with the government’s handling of immigration issues.

“I think the main reason is that we’ve had an influx of illegal immigrants in the country, and the damage being done is growing more and more every day.

Ngobese added that the march on Monday was only the start of continued action against illegal immigration.

Resident Zwakele Mncwango told The Citizen that government must enforce the laws on immigrants.

“Our government must enforce our laws. Our immigration act is clear on what must happen when someone is here illegally; it is a crime to be in this country illegally. The question is: Why government is doing nothing about this? So today we are saying we are uniting beyond politics[…] to say enough is enough,” he added.

Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) provincial manager, Mlungisi Ndlovu, said that the border management authority (BMA) must be able to secure the country’s borders.

“We must be able to support border management authority because before you can deal with undocumented illegals, you must check whether your border management authority is safe.  The law enforcement needs to take their actions,” Ndlovu told Newzroom Afrika.

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) and ActionSA threw their support behind the march.

Operation Dudula said that it was responding to calls from South Africa to address the healthcare crisis. Siphiwe Shabangu, a national executive committee member of Operation Dudula, alleges that the building being inspected is hijacked by Congolese nationals and the City of Johannesburg is not collecting any municipal revenue from it.

“This building is hijacked. There is only one South African staying here, and he works as a caretaker,” says Shabangu. “The City is losing revenue. This building owes R12 million in electricity and R20 million in water.”

Over the past few weeks, members of the controversial group Operation Dudula have been blocking people from accessing public hospitals and clinics.

The group claims it is only preventing undocumented foreigners; however government said that only home affairs immigration officials had the authority to determine who was documented or not.

Operation Dudula has claimed congestion at public facilities has eased as a result of its actions; however, the National Department of Health said there was no evidence to support this.

He read through a message which he said came from O'Sullivan.

Trump’s Justice Department Takes Down Dark Web Child Abuse Network — 120,000 Users, Millions of Files in Operation Grayskull

In one of the most aggressive and successful anti-child exploitation crackdowns in U.S. history, President Trump’s Justice Department has revealed the results of Operation Grayskull, a sweeping, international strike that dismantled four high-traffic dark web platforms trafficking violent child sexual abuse materials, exposing a digital cesspool that included over 120,000 registered users and millions of illicit files.

To date, 18 individuals have been convicted in federal court, receiving a combined 300+ years in prison.

The Justice Department detailed how Thomas Peter Katsampes, 52, of Minnesota, became a staff member on one of these despicable sites, personally distributing CSAM, guiding others on how to do so, and helping manage operations. He was sentenced to over 20 years in prison, lifetime supervision, and forced to pay restitution to his victims.

But he was only one of many.

Among the 18 convicted predators:

William Michael Spearman of Alabama was sentenced to life in prison for his role in a child exploitation enterprise.

Joseph Addison Martin of Washington got 42 years.

Keith David McIntosh of Michigan was sentenced to a staggering 55 years, with a prior conviction on record.

Selwyn David Rosenstein of Florida was handed 28 years and a six-figure restitution order for his crimes.

Each of these individuals was found guilty of actively operating or contributing to some of the darkest, most vile content imaginable, and doing so in a highly coordinated and secretive online network.

“Today’s announcement sends a clear warning to those who exploit and abuse children: you will not find safe haven, even on the dark web,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“These offenders thought that they could act without consequences, but they were wrong. Thanks to the relentless determination of our prosecutors and law enforcement partners we have exposed these perpetrators for who they are, eliminated their websites and brought justice to countless victims.”

“This operation represents one of the most significant strikes ever made against online child exploitation networks,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “We’ve not only dismantled dangerous platforms on the dark web, but we’ve also brought key perpetrators to justice and delivered a powerful message: you cannot hide behind anonymity to harm children.”

“Yesterday’s sentencing reaffirms our steadfast commitment to protecting our children, the most vulnerable among us, from those who exploit and harm them through the despicable trade in child sexual abuse material,” said U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida.

“Thomas Peter Katsampes and his co-conspirators ran some of the darkweb’s most heinous networks, enabling horrific crimes against innocent victims, but Operation Grayskull has shut these sites down and delivered justice. AfriForum this morning again called for the prioritisation of farm attacks after an investigation into farm attacks by the US State Department’s Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) found that farm attacks are indeed not “ordinary crimes”. The DRL released its findings following its mission to South Africa last night. Considering the bureau’s findings, which criticise local politicians’ failure to condemn the “Kill the Boer” chant, the civil rights organisation also demands that President Cyril Ramaphosa urgently condemn the chant in public.

The bureau found that farm attacks are not ordinary crimes, but that in certain documented cases, victims are tortured or murdered without anything being stolen.

AfriForum stresses that the ANC-led government’s failure to deal with farm murders with the necessary seriousness is further damaging the diplomatic relations between South Africa and the US. The bureau argues in an X-post, among other things, that “breakdowns in law and order are not conducive to growth or collaboration with the United States. The court postponed Molefe’s bail application to August 6. The three alleged hitmen – Tau, Kekana, and Mabusela – had previously revealed that they had no intention of applying for bail on July 22.

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Political Killings Task Team and Gauteng Organised Crime Unit have connected the suspects to two additional cases.

City Press reports that Phillipa Erasmus, the principal of Pretoria High School for Girls, who was first accused of racism and later charged because her husband maintained the school’s gardens, has been suspended for three months without pay. She was found guilty on charges related to her husband voluntarily supervising the school’s gardeners, a situation claimed to have created “an impression of nepotism”. She was also found guilty of not adequately assisting the school’s governing body during the appointment of a new financial manager. However, Erasmus was acquitted of accusations regarding the alleged failure to enforce the school’s code of conduct, which stemmed from claims of racism. Last year, the Gauteng department of education launched an investigation at the school after white pupils alleged on a WhatsApp group that they were subjected to stricter rules than their black classmates. While the pupils were cleared of any wrongdoing, Erasmus faced disciplinary charges and severe criticism over allegations of discrimination and racism at the school. Thus far, the department has refused to release the investigation report. Dems Nel of the SA Teachers’ Union and Erasmus’ representative said that they were still pursuing the matter through the information regulator. He confirmed that Erasmus was reviewing the findings and had the right to appeal.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) continued persecution of Pretoria High School for Girls principal, Mrs Philippa Erasmus, who has now been found guilty on a frivolous charge because her husband assisted with landscaping at the school as a voluntary act is unacceptable and delays progressive learning and teaching at this school.

Finding a principal guilty of her husband assisting the school, without compensation, is not only absurd but also shows a department more focused on saving face than on achieving justice or improving educational outcomes.

The department’s handling of disciplinary issues has become increasingly erratic and inconsistent, often appearing to be influenced by political agendas. It is perplexing why the department has been slow to respond to many damning cases, particularly those that threaten learner safety, but decided to move with unusual speed and vengeance in this instance.

On 17 May 2021 the ANC’s national disciplinary committee gave a clean bill of health to two of its Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee members, former health MEC Bandile Masuku and former presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko.

Both had been disciplined for nepotistic involvement in PPE tenders in Gauteng. Masuku remains fired as health MEC in Gauteng and Diko remains on suspension as presidential spokesperson pending a state enquiry, not an ANC internal disciplinary process.

The committee found that the Constitution of the ANC does not refer to nepotism, that nepotism is not a crime and that evidence in the disciplinary enquiry about it should be disregarded. Masuku gleefully announced that his faith in the ANC has been restored. Whether public faith in the ANC has also been restored is a different question that bears analysis.

All too often horror stories emerge that reveal that the well-connected (whether by nepotism or cronyism) win tenders at hugely inflated prices and then sub-contract to the honest and genuine tenderers to do the work, skimming off an astronomical profit for inserting themselves into the process without doing anything other than asserting their political connectiveness and collecting the loot.

When the family member of the official on the carpet has obtained a windfall via tenderpreneurism that is combined with nepotistic tender awards to that family member, there is more than a risk of conflict, there is actual conflict between the high ethical standards required in law and the acquisition of the windfall.

Of course Masuku and Diko were not on trial in the courts of the land, they faced disciplinary charges under the constitution of the ANC, a different scenario in which different rules apply. The committee drew attention to rule 25 of the ANC constitution in coming to its surprising finding. Rule 15.17.4 reads:

“Engaging in any unethical or immoral conduct which detracts from the character, values and integrity of the ANC”… that brings the ANC into “disrepute”.

It is plain that nepotism and cronyism are covered under the rubric “unethical or immoral conduct” and the failure of the committee to understand and apply this interpretation of the words quoted above says a great deal about the slippage of standards in the ANC.

Also, it must be borne in mind that the adjudication is not one of law but of the ethical and moral standards at play in the day to day lives of loyal cadres of the ANC. Open season on nepotism and cronyism has been declared by the rulings made and will add fuel to the fires of the generally held public perception that the ANC is an organization infested with unethical and immoral characters who are allowed to get away with their unethical and immoral behaviour simply because the rules of the ANC are given impossibly narrow and legalistic interpretations.

The findings reflect poorly on the standards of ethics and morality that are currently in place in the ANC. Its integrity as a political organization is impacted negatively by the findings and the need for corrective action ought to be apparent to the leadership of the ANC.

Armed gangs target five Cape Town schools, demand 10% of teachers’ salaries

More than two weeks since armed men visited Zanemfundo Primary School in Phillipi East demanding protection fees from teachers, police have made little progress in investigating the incident and no suspects have been arrested.

The incident took place on 28 February. Teachers were reportedly told to pay 10% of their salaries by Friday, 14 March. Too scared to go to work on Friday, teachers went to the Education Department’s district offices in Mitchells Plain to voice their safety concerns. Classes were cancelled.

An Eastern Cape principal was brutally murdered in school premises while in another incident extortionists demanded R50 000.

In a separate incident also in the Eastern Cape a group of extortionists allegedly stormed Efata school for the blind and demanded R50 000 from the school’s nurse.

“Upon his refusal, they took his mobile phone, laptop and television. The same criminals sent an SMS to the principal demanding the R50 000,” Mtima said.

A case of extortion has been opened as the Eastern Cape Department of Education also referred the matter to police.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police Ian Cameron said what started with isolated incidents, mainly with the protection fee racket affecting entertainment areas in the City of Cape Town, has grown into a leviathan, threatening businesses across the country, long-distance buses and, most chilling, schools.

“Extortionists thrive in an environment of lawlessness and lack of consequences for their actions. When police officers themselves are corrupt and take bribes, further erosion of trust will occur, empowering protection fee syndicates. It is with a great deal of honour, revolutionary pride and heartfelt gratitude that I greet you all on behalf of the African National Congress, the hosts of this summit and the people of South Africa. The Liberation Movement Summit is more than a conference.

We gather this year on the 64th anniversary of the independence of Tanzania, the 50th anniversary of the independence of Angola and Mozambique, the 45th anniversary of the independence of Zimbabwe, and the 35th anniversary of the independence of Namibia. It is a moment not just for celebration, but it is also a moment for critical reflection. We must honour the memories of our founding giants Julius Nyerere, Eduardo Mondlane, Samora Machel, Agostino Neto, Sam Nujoma, Robert Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo, Kenneth Kaunda, Oliver Tambo, Nelson Mandela, and many others.

We are also pleased that we have amongst us fraternal parties from across the world. This is what makes this summit so special, so impactful. We welcome the Communist Party of China, the Polisario Front from the Sahrawi Republic, FATAH from Palestine, the FLN of Algeria, United Russia, the BNF of Botswana, the Sandinistas of Nicaragua, and the PAC of Azania, as well as other continental organisations that are here represented, and other parties that I may not have mentioned.

It is our responsibility as liberation movements to draw on that desire and that energy to undertake a new struggle with youth of our various countries at the forefront. Our youth leagues must not be ceremonial wings of our movements, but they must be engines of ideological clarity, economic innovation, digital activism, and organisational unity and renewal. We support the establishment of the Permanent Youth Secretariat and the Liberation Youth Development Fund, as well as the call for continental political education through our party schools, as well as youth exchanges and policy participation across our region.

As liberation movements, we must advocate for people-centred regional migration policies that affirm dignity, rights, and solidarity as well. We must never forget our freedom struggles were international in nature. Our freedom was achieved not only by the tireless struggles of our peoples but by the efforts of people from across the world.

Drawing on that experience, we reaffirm our support for the peoples of Palestine, Western Sahara, and Cuba. We condemn in the strongest terms the crimes against humanity and the genocide committed by the apartheid state of Israel against the people of Palestine. We are particularly horrified by the deliberate starvation of the people of Gaza.

Our position remains very clear. Liberation is indivisible. We are not truly free until all are free.

Going forward, we must establish a framework for deeper inter-party collaboration across governance, socio-economic transformation, and ideological education as well.

We should champion the vision of a multipolar, multicultural, equitable, inclusive, and a just world order. We should demand reform of the political and economic global governance institutions and the end of unilateral sanctions and the creation of a just global governance system rooted in dignity and in fairness. Working with like-minded forces across the world, we must be the architects of the new world order that we seek.

History demands that we don't allow our legacies to be buried under the rubble of revolutionary nostalgia. We must ensure our relevance through bold action that we must take. We are the custodians of Africa's unfinished revolution.

We need to reaffirm that there shall be peace and friendship, that there shall be houses and security and comfort for all as set out in our freedom charter adopted in 1955, 70 years ago here in South Africa. Let us not only defend the gains of liberation.

This is the hour and the moment that we need to regain our strength and move forward, renewed and reinvigorated, forever moving forward as we all in unison say, Aluta continua. Amandla! Amandla!

48. In the so-called “post-truth era”, objective facts matter more than ever before. The news media cannot afford to pander to the idea of “alternative facts”.

49. The facts that both parties formally agreed to in this matter, are the following:

• Akkerland was in a dispute on two fronts over several years preceding

2018: There was a pending land claim and Coal of Africa (or a subsidiary) held prospecting rights over mineral resources on the farms. Coal of Africa and Akkerland were involved in litigation about access to the farms to exercise the mine’s prospecting rights.

• The department of rural development and land reform negotiated with

Akkerland for the sale of the farms to settle a land claim – i.e. to buy it from Akkerland in order to provide the farms to land claimants. The government initially offered R17m and finally R20.7m to purchase the farm. Akkerland was of the view that its farms were worth R200m and did not agree to the sale.

• –When no agreement could be reached, the Minister of Rural

Development and Land Reform invoked section 42E of the Restitution of Land Rights Act 22 of 1994 to expropriate the farms. In terms of that section, the provisions of the1975 Expropriation Act (now repealed) would be applicable to the expropriation process.–

• An expropriation notice was delivered to Akkerland, setting the date of 4 April 2018 as the date of expropriation and to hand over keys to the state.

• From that date, 4 April 2018, the ownership of the farms vested in the State.

• In terms of the 1975 Expropriation Act, the onus was on the ex-landowner to challenge either the expropriation or the compensation amount. This implies the need for great financial resources to litigate against the state.

• Akkerland Boerdery rushed off to the Land Claims Court. They sought an urgent interdict against the government not to be evicted. The urgent interdict was granted and would remain in place until finalisation of a review application which was instituted simultaneously but would only be considered by the court at a later stage.

• The review application became settled between the parties a few months later. The Land Claims Court made the settlement an order of court on 12 September 2018, which recorded:

“a. The (Minister) withdraws the Notice of Expropriation dated 19 March 2018 with immediate effect.

1. It is declared that ownership of the Farm Lukin 643 MS and the Farm Salaita 188 MT reverts to (Akkerland) with immediate effect.

108. The publication is directed to:

• Update the current article to correct the statement that Akkerland Boerdery was never expropriated and to include the context of the Land Claims Court orders of April and September 2018.

• Publish an apology to its readers for omitting material context and for any confusion this may have caused its readers.

• The update/apology is to reference this complaint, contain the logo of the Press Council, and link to the full ruling.

A representative of a human rights group based in the UK has written to the ambassador designate of the United States, Brent Bozell III, to alert him to allegations that the South African government had advance notice of Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 – and that its case at the International Court of Justice was part of a coordinated attack.

Justin Lewis of CASISA, which describes itself as a “human rights lobby group whose purpose is the prevention of court corruption”, stated in a letter dated 27 March that people within the South African government had been aware of what Hamas was planning and were prepared to approach international bodies to protect it from Israel.

His letter stated: “As part of a political strategy, preparations were made before the October 7 atrocity against Israel to set mechanisms in place for approaching the ICC and ICJ for protection from Israel’s anticipated response.”

Lewis is currently involved in an investigation into alleged corruption within South African banks linked to UK tax havens. He asserts that the investigation aims to expose legalised “court-approved” international money laundering.

He claimed that elements within the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) actively supported Hamas’ political strategy by facilitating access to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which Hamas, as a non-signatory, could not access otherwise.

Interpol Leads Major Cybercrime Bust in Africa: 1,209 Arrests and $97 Million Recovered

A major international operation coordinated by Interpol has resulted in significant arrests and asset recoveries across Africa.

Known as Operation Serengeti 2.0, the effort spanned from June to August 2025 and involved law enforcement from 18 African nations along with the United Kingdom.

The operation focused on combating various forms of cybercrime that have impacted thousands of individuals worldwide.

Authorities arrested 1,209 suspects during the operation and recovered approximately $97.4 million in illicit funds.

Nearly 88,000 victims were identified as targets of these schemes, with investigators dismantling 11,432 malicious infrastructures used in the crimes.

These actions highlight the extensive reach of organized cybercriminal networks operating in the region.

The crimes targeted included inheritance scams, ransomware attacks, and business email compromise operations. Inheritance scams, despite being among the oldest online frauds, continue to generate substantial revenue for criminal groups.

Ransomware and email compromises have been identified as rising threats in Africa, according to Interpol’s assessments.

In Angola, law enforcement shut down 25 illegal cryptocurrency mining facilities run by 60 Chinese nationals.

Equipment valued at over $37 million was seized, and the government intends to repurpose it for electricity distribution in underserved communities.

This action addressed unauthorized blockchain activities that strained local resources.

Zambian authorities disrupted a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme that defrauded more than 65,000 victims of an estimated $300 million.

The scammers used aggressive advertising to lure investors into downloading apps for supposed high-yield returns, leading to 15 arrests and the seizure of domains, phone numbers, and bank accounts.

The investigation also uncovered a potential human trafficking ring and confiscated 372 forged passports from multiple countries.

In Côte d’Ivoire, officials dismantled a cross-border inheritance scam that originated in Germany and caused $1.6 million in losses to victims. The primary suspect was arrested, with assets such as electronics, jewelry, cash, vehicles, and documents recovered.

The operation received support from private sector partners including Kaspersky, Group-IB, Fortinet, and others, enhancing investigative capabilities.

Funding came from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, under the framework of the African Joint Operation against Cybercrime.

Pre-operation workshops trained investigators in tools for open-source intelligence, cryptocurrency tracking, and ransomware analysis.

Participating countries included Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The operation underscores the importance of international collaboration in tackling cybercrimes that cross borders. Such initiatives aim to protect vulnerable populations from evolving digital threats.
