Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed that there have been about 1,500 truck drivers who do not speak English taken off the roads as part of a push to ensure foreign truck drivers are not causing accidents.

Back in 2016, the Obama administration stopped enforcing English proficiency requirements for truckers, according to a report from The Daily Signal.

But in May, Duffy issued a guidance making clear that truck drivers who cannot demonstrate a proficiency in English cannot drive.

The 1,500 drivers were taken off the roads within the first 3o days of the rules once more being enforced, according to The Daily Signal.

“Since I took action to enforce language proficiency requirements for truckers, our state partners have put roughly 1,500 unqualified drivers out of service. That’s what I call results!” Duffy posted on X.

The number of measles cases in Canada this year is nearly triple that of the United States, according to a July 28 weekly monitoring report from the Canadian government.

As of July 19, confirmed measles cases reported in Canada had reached 3,878, according to the report. This is 2.9 times the 1,333 confirmed cases reported in the United States as of July 29, according to a July 30 update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Canada, measles infections, both confirmed and probable, have been reported from 10 jurisdictions—Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.

Ontario has the highest number of cases, with 2,301 confirmed and probable infections. Alberta has had 1,450 cases, Manitoba 167, and British Columbia 140.

The current measles outbreak in Canada began in New Brunswick in October last year and has since continued to spread across several provinces, the government report said.

“Measles has been eliminated in Canada since 1998, and therefore endemic transmission no longer takes place in the country. However, cases continue to occur sporadically, usually due to importation from regions where measles is circulating,” it said.

According to World Health Organization data published in July, Canada ranked ninth in the list of nations that reported measles cases over the previous six months.

Ahead of Canada were Yemen, Pakistan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Romania, and Nigeria.

Some of these nations—Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Nigeria—ranked among the top 10 new immigrant nationalities that arrived in Canada last year, according to data from Statista. Continue…

The law was passed by the Ukrainian legislature earlier this month and signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, allowing people over the age of 60 to serve in limited roles until martial law in Ukraine is lifted.

While the current martial law authorization is set to lapse next month, Zelensky has requested that lawmakers extend it for an additional 90 days. Zelensky’s presidential term has already expired, and he has used martial law to remain in office.

Zelensky signed the law increasing the age limit as Ukraine continues to struggle with manpower in the war with Russia. Last year, Ukraine lowered its draft age from 27 to 25, but has resisted calls from the US to drop it to 18.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 10:18pm local time and was centered in the NYC commuter suburb of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, roughly six miles beneath the surface. While considered minor, the seismic event was strong enough to cause noticeable shaking in several nearby areas, including parts of the NYC boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx.

New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) issued a statement shortly after the incident, noting that it was “monitoring and investigating” the incident.

Edmonton’s International Airport says it has opened a “safe room” to serve as a dedicated space for victims of human trafficking or domestic abuse.

The airport made the announcement on July 30, saying victims are often transported through airports before they are exploited in various industries, including “sex work.”

Human trafficking involves recruiting, transporting, holding, or controlling a person to benefit from them through sexual exploitation or forced labour, according to the federal government. Traffickers can make up to $280,800 per victim each year, the Alberta Centre to End Trafficking said. Victims can be as young as 13 years old.

The room at the Edmonton airport is a “secure, private and comforting area” where individuals experiencing trauma or crisis at the airport can stay, according to the airport news release. It has couches, a bed, a kitchenette, and a full bathroom.

It will also include other resources such as fresh clothes, food, phones, and internet, the airport said.

Carmen Donnelly, vice-president of passenger experience and terminal operations for the Edmonton airport, said airports are “uniquely positioned” to disrupt human trafficking as they are the “source of travel.” Continue…

Alberta’s chief electoral officer, Gordon McClure, approved the petition against Alberta’s separation by group Alberta Forever Canada on July 30, saying as per legislation, it now needed to garner signatures from 10 percent of eligible voters, or 293,976 signatures, to qualify as a referendum.

The petition question is “Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?”

The organizer of the petition, Thomas Lukaszuk, is a former Progressive Conservative MLA and cabinet minister. He served as the deputy premier of Alberta from 2012 to 2013. However, in the last provincial election, he supported the NDP against the United Conservative Party, which was formed by the merger of the PCs and the Wildrose Party.

Lukaszuk’s petition was launched after another group, the Alberta Prosperity Project, filed a different application for a petition. In that application, the question posed was about Alberta separating from Canada. Elections Alberta sent the Alberta Prosperity Project petition application to the Court of King’s Bench asking for a ruling on whether or not it contravenes Charter issues.

The document seeks to provide “guidance for public servants on their personal use of social media.”

“Ultimately, we need to carefully think about how to uphold confidence in our ability to provide advice to the government and serve Canadians in a non-partisan and impartial manner,” said the guidance document issued by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, which assists the Treasury Board in overseeing government spending and operations.

As first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter, the document defines social media as encompassing a wide range of online activities across various platforms, websites, and applications. They include social networking sites like Facebook, X, and Instagram; professional sites like LinkedIn; and video-sharing platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Also included are blogs, online forums such as Reddit, review websites such as Google and Amazon, and comment sections on news articles and brand websites.

The guidance document says that it is “not meant to discourage” federal employees from participating on those platforms, but rather to help them understand “how to live up to” their responsibilities as public servants while also “respecting our individual right to freedom of expression.”

The Department of Defense confirmed the US recently transferred 31 F-16 fighter jets from Kunsan Air Base to Osan Air Base, with a purpose to "consolidate air power and enhance combat readiness" in the region.

Tesla shares responsibility for an accident involving its vehicle’s Autopilot system, and must pay $243 million as compensation, a jury from the District Court, Southern District of Florida, said in an Aug. 1 verdict.

The case stems from a collision involving a 2019 Tesla Model S equipped with automatic driving features, in which Tesla’s Autopilot allowed the car to “navigate without driver input,” according to a June 30 court document.

The incident took place on April 25, 2019, when George McGee, the driver and owner of a 2019 Tesla Model S, slammed into a parked Chevrolet Tahoe, which then went on to strike two individuals—Naibel Benavides Leon and Dillon Angulo. While Leon died in the accident, Angulo suffered “significant injuries.”

Subsequently, Leon’s representative and Angulo filed separate lawsuits against Tesla, which were eventually consolidated into a single lawsuit in March 2024. Out of the four charges laid out in the lawsuit, the court allowed two product liability claims against Tesla to move forward—defective design and failure to warn.

On Aug. 1, a Florida jury agreed that Tesla placed the 2019 Model S in the market “with a defect which was a legal cause of damage” to the victims, according to the verdict form.

They found that there was negligence on the part of driver McGee as well, which was also a legal cause of damage to Leon and Angulo.

Tesla was assigned 33 percent of the accident’s responsibility by the jury, with McGee sharing 67 percent.

Commenting on the verdict, law firm Singleton Schreiber LLP, representing the victims in the lawsuit, said in an Aug. 2 post that the jury “determined that Tesla was 33 percent at fault for allowing Autopilot use on roads it wasn’t designed for and failing to adequately monitor driver attention.” Continue…

Germany's historic reversal on its military posture and stregnth has long been on display since near the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. Berlin has been drastically expanding its military spending and is even recently mulling compulsory service for the nation's armed forces.

But even without this more dramatic action, the reality is that interest in joining the German Armed Forces has grown significantly, with military recruitment up 28% so far in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to new Defence Ministry information published Thursday.

By July 21, approximately 13,750 new recruits had joined the Bundeswehr, the defense miinistry said - which has involved fixed-term service contracts and voluntary military service.

This has apparently been an increasingly attractive route for young people after finishing school. Currently, the Bundeswehr has around 183,100 active personnel, which is an increase of about 2,000 compared to last year.

Voluntary service participation has also climbed by roughly 15%, reaching 11,350 recruits. While these numbers pale in comparison to the much larger militaries of the US, Russia, or even Ukraine - it marks the start of what could be a historic shift after the German military's post-WWII effective decimation. A video showing a crowd of Ukrainian soccer fans repeatedly performing a Nazi salute during their team’s match against a rival club has been published by a Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua. The short clip shows numerous men, mostly dressed in black, repeatedly chanting: “Glory to the nation!” and “Ukraine!”

The people in the video were identified by Strana.ua as “ultras” of the Veres Rivne football club. Photos and videos showing “the same people wearing the same clothes” were published on the social media pages of club fans, the outlet reported.

Veres hosted Dynamo Kiev on Saturday with the home club suffering a 0:1 defeat. There have been no reports of the Ukrainian authorities reacting in any way to the video showing Nazi salutes that has emerged on social media.

US fighter jets were scrambled on Sunday to intercept a civilian aircraft that had violated restricted airspace over US President Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, marking the fifth unauthorized incursion into the area over the weekend, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

The incident occurred at around 12:50pm local time, when the general aviation aircraft entered a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zone established due to Trump’s presence in the area. NORAD deployed military jets to escort the plane, using flares to alert the pilot and ensure its safe removal from the zone.

The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) received more than 54,000 online job applications for more than 5,000 seasonal positions including cashiers, retail associates, game attendants, food service staff, midway operators, and informational guides.

The CNE is an annual two-week-long fair in Toronto that will run from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1 this year.

The event held a job fair on July 30 in the Enercare Centre at Toronto’s Exhibition Place, which was attended by approximately 4,000 candidates hoping to attain job positions as food and games vendors at the fair. Applicants began arriving just after 5 a.m. and formed long lines to await their turn for an interview.

CNE organizers said they received more job applications this year than ever before, and noted the record as an indication of a job market that’s causing high rates of youth unemployment.

The global average cost of a data breach has dropped for the first time in five years, although not in Canada, a new report indicates.

The average cost of a data breach between March 2024 and February 2025 decreased to $6.4 million from $6.6 million the year before, according to a July 30 report by technology giant IBM and U.S.-based cybersecurity research centre Ponemon Institute.

Although global costs are declining due to less time taken to investigate breaches resulting in shorter breach life cycles, cyberattack costs in Canada have increased, the report indicates.

“Data breaches in Canada are becoming more costly and complex,” a July 30 IBM press release says.

Organizations in Canada paid an average of $6.98 million per data breach in 2025, which is a 10.4 percent increase from $6.32 million in 2024.

Costs in Canada are higher due to an increase in detection and escalation expenses, which include costs for forensic investigators, regulatory responses, legal counsel, and crisis communications, IBM Canada’s security delivery leader Daina Proctor said. Continue…

A lone camper singing a mournful song was wrongly identified as a person in peril last week, triggering a full-scale search and rescue mission in the Okanagan region of British Columbia.

A July 31 training session of Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR), a volunteer team serving the region, was interrupted when its members received reports of “someone yelling for help” near the Boulderfields, a well-known hiking and climbing site close to Kelowna, a social media post from the search and rescue unit said.

“Two concerned hikers called 911 after hearing repeated cries,” the post said, noting that the group responded with a “full contingent” of its members, its drone team, and two RCMP officers.

“Early responders even heard faint yelling—but couldn’t make out what was being said,” the post said. “Was it ‘help?’ Or worse, Nickelback?” the volunteer rescue team added, nodding to the long-running joke that pokes fun at the band’s music.

The team and two RCMP officers began to search the area on foot while a drone team conducted an aerial search.

Health Canada is cautioning consumers about the serious health risks linked to unauthorized drugs sold online that claim to combat signs of aging or boost athletic performance.

The federal health agency confiscated unauthorized injectable peptide drugs typically used as anti-aging treatments or by bodybuilders and athletes seeking enhanced performance, according to an Aug. 1 advisory.

The drugs were being sold via the Canada Peptide website, which has since been removed and listed as “under maintenance” as of Aug. 4.

Although injectable peptides are classified as prescription medications, Health Canada did not approve any of the products that were confiscated or marketed on the company’s website, the department said, noting that all sales of the drugs were illegal.

“Health Canada has not authorized any of the products that were seized or sold on the company’s website, which means that they have not been assessed for safety, efficacy, and quality,” the advisory said. “Prescription drugs should only be used under the care of a healthcare professional because they are used to treat specific conditions and may cause serious side effects.”

Approximately 300 Armed Forces soldiers along with thousands of Canadian Rangers are patrolling Canada’s territories, an area totalling more than 3 million square kilometres, federal documents says.

A June 20 Department of National Defence briefing note counted 5,640 Canadian Rangers in Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut in addition to the roughly 300 soldiers monitoring the region. It did not count the number of military reservists in the territories.

“Strategic competition, climate change, technological advancements and economic interests are making the region strategically vital. That is why the department, alongside its government partners, is focused on defending the Arctic,” the note said as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

The Canadian Armed Forces plans to expand its northern operations, and is open to assistance from other allied nations, the briefing note said.

“This expansion anticipates including more Canadian Armed Forces personnel and the potential for increased inclusion of forces from Allied nations with an Arctic interest,” it said. “New activities aim to support a near year-round military presence through exercises and training to assert Canada’s presence and sovereignty.”

An earlier 2024 report counted 308 regular forces members in the territories of Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The report found that one-third of military installations in the territories dated back to at least 1974 and were no longer useful. Continue…

“The haunting images of Israeli hostages being held captive by Hamas are stark reminders of the horrors they have endured for more than 660 days,” Anand said in an Aug. 3 statement. “The immediate release of all hostages from Gaza is imperative.”

Terrorist groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad released respective videos in recent days of hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski, showing them both in very poor health.

“What I’m doing now is digging my own grave,” David says in the video where he is shown in a Hamas tunnel with a shovel.

The two have been captive since Hamas conducted raids inside Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 and kidnapping 251. Israel has since sought to eliminate Hamas. The war has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians, as Hamas functions within and beneath civilian zones.

Police are crediting two motorists with saving the life of a pilot trapped in the fiery wreckage of a crop-dusting helicopter that crashed Friday in a wheat field northeast of London.

The quick-thinking passers-by were travelling along Cobble Hills Road, south of Thorndale Road, about 12:30 p.m. when they spotted the chopper, which had been spraying the field, crash near Thorndale in Thames Centre.

“There was a lone male pilot, and he was extricated by two good Samaritans while the helicopter was still on fire. They pulled him out,” said OPP Sgt. Ryan Griffith.

“They saved a life today, no question about it.”

The 21-year-old pilot from Bracebridge was flown to Victoria Hospital in London with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries. Continue…

A three-judge panel unanimously overturned a lower court’s block on the state’s mail-in ballot requirements.

The three judges included: Judge James Ho (Trump), Judge Don Willett (Trump), and Judge Patrick Higginbotham (Reagan).

“We have no difficulty concluding that this ID number requirement fully complies with a provision of federal law known by the parties as the materiality provision of the 1964 Civil Rights Act,” the judges ruled.

“The ID number requirement is obviously designed to confirm that each mail-in ballot voter is precisely who he claims he is. And that is plainly “material” to “determining whether such individual is qualified under State law to vote,”” the judges worote.

“The district court reached the opposite conclusion. So we reverse and render judgment for Defendants,” they said.

With an eye on beating Russia and China to the punch, the Trump administration is about to announce plans to fast-track the building of a nuclear fission reactor on the moon. NASA administrator Sean Duffy, who is also Transportation Secretary, is expected to announce the expedited program this week, according to documents obtained by Politico.

“To properly advance this critical technology to be able to support a future lunar economy, high power energy generation on Mars, and to strengthen our national security in space, it is imperative the agency move quickly,” wrote Duffy in a directive issued Thursday.

In that memorandum, Duffy points to a joint Russian-Chinese plan to build a lunar nuclear reactor of their own. In May, the countries signed a memorandum of cooperation by which they will collaborate on a reactor to power the planned International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which they hope to have operational by 2036. Led by the Chinese, but part of a collaboration with many other countries including Venezuela, Belarus, South Africa, Pakistan, Egypt and Kazakhstan, the facility is intended to conduct scientific research within a 62-mile radius of the lunar south pole. The Canadian Armed Forces executed an airdrop of nearly 10,000 kilograms of “life-saving” aid to Palestinians in Gaza on Aug. 4, amid a rapidly worsening crisis in the area, Prime Minister Mark Carney says.

“The humanitarian disaster in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating,” Carney said in an X post. “Canada is intensifying our efforts with international partners to develop a credible peace plan and will ensure aid moves forward at the necessary scale.”

As part of that effort, the military deployed a CC-130J Hercules aircraft over the Gaza Strip to carry out the drop, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Defence Minister David McGuinty said in a statement.

The ministers said “severe challenges” remain in delivering aid to the people of Gaza due to restrictions imposed by the Israeli government. They accused Israel of hindering aid, which constitutes a “violation of international humanitarian law,” adding that humanitarian needs “have reached an unprecedented level.”

The statement echoed similar remarks made by Carney last week when he called the situation in Gaza “intolerable” and accused Israel of violating international law for withholding humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Deepfakes are images, videos, or audio that have been altered or produced through AI to create content that misrepresents an individual’s words or actions.

The premier said there are also videos of “other well-known people,” such as Prime Minister Mark Carney, circulating online that recommend putting money into certain investments.

“And I want you to know that I will never endorse or recommend a particular investment,” Moe said. “So if you see a video or an ad of myself doing that, it’s a fake.”

New legislation that intends to promote safety in public urban spaces by prohibiting street weapons and substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine has come into effect in Saskatchewan.

The Safe Public Spaces Act, also known as the Street Weapons Act, came into effect on Aug. 1, a July 31 news release says.

The legislation allows police to seize and impound street weapons, such as knives, machetes, axes, hammers, and bear spray.

The Act also considers hypodermic needles not used for medical purposes and dangerous drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine to be street weapons.

“The government is committed to increased public safety measures to ensure all Saskatchewan citizens feel safe and protected in their communities,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Tim McLeod said in a July 31 statement.

“The coming-into-force of this Act will empower law enforcement and give them an important tool to appropriately address individuals that use street weapons to intimidate or harm people in public spaces.”

The province is giving municipalities and First Nations the choice to opt into the Act or not, noting that the rules will not apply to those who do not opt in. Continue…

Alberta-based lawyer James Kitchen has been litigating for years. As a self-described libertarian lawyer focused on human rights and individual freedoms, he has taken on cases involving issues such as freedom of expression, Charter challenges, and parental rights.

For him, it has become an increasingly uphill battle. He says that although parental rights are protected by law, Canada’s justice system has become “highly politicized,” creating a gap between legal reality and what the law states on paper.

“In Canada, [parental rights are] being actively undermined and shrunk and weakened by judges who see that as a bad thing,” Kitchen told The Epoch Times in an interview.

Meanwhile, parental rights advocate John Hilton-O’Brien, who serves as executive director of advocacy group Parents for Choice in Education, says not all hope is lost for parents in court.

Scientists at the University of British Columbia (UBC) published a report on Aug. 4 detailing their findings after an investigation into the large-scale die-off in the province five years ago.

The researchers gathered 33 oysters from two farms in B.C. that experienced the 2020 die-off, along with 26 wild oysters collected from 10 nearby sites.

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) analysis identified a novel virus—Pacific Oyster Nidovirus 1—in the dead or dying oysters. Yet it was not detected in healthy wild oysters, suggesting a correlation between the virus and mortality.

“This discovery highlights how little we know about viruses infecting invertebrates in general and oysters in particular,” senior author and university professor Dr. Curtis Suttle said in a news release.

Suttle said investigating the mass die-off to identify the disease was crucial for understanding how to better protect Pacific oysters, a major B.C. industry. Pacific oysters are the main shellfish cultivated in the province and had an estimated value of $16 million in 2023. Continue…

Additionally, Anand will participate in a joint meeting of the Committee for North America and the Committee for Foreign Affairs of Mexico’s Senate in an effort to further parliamentary relations between Canada and Mexico.

“This visit will also serve to strengthen bilateral dialogue in anticipation of Prime Minister Carney’s upcoming visit to Mexico,” GAC said. The date of the official visit has not yet been released.

Canada Border Services Agency says it has arrested and charged three alleged smugglers after police intercepted a truck carrying 44 foreign nationals in southern Quebec over the weekend.

CBSA says RCMP and Quebec provincial police intercepted the vehicle with dozens of people aboard near Stanstead, Que. overnight between Saturday to Sunday.

The agency says Ogulcan Mersin, 25, and Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek, both 31, have been charged with inducing, aiding or abetting someone to commit an offence under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act as well as assisting people to enter Canada outside of a designated customs office.

CBSA says most of the foreign nationals were transferred to the CBSA’s refugee processing centre in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle where they are subject to immigration examinations.

The agency did not say what happened to the remaining foreign nationals.

The agency says the three suspects will remain detained until their case returns to court on Wednesday.

CBSA says the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be laid.

The 15-page suit, filed last week in Michigan by Vanessa Miles, claims: “This accident was caused, at least in part, by Defendants knowingly assigning an inexperienced and inadequately trained pilot to operate the flight, demonstrating a reckless disregard for passenger safety in pursuit of operational efficiency.”

It adds that the airline “cut corners on safety by rushing pilots through training programs.”

It goes on to list of number of alleged failures, including “Failure to ensure proper functioning of critical emergency evacuation equipment; Failure to properly train flight crew on emergency evacuation procedures; Absence of any emergency announcements or guidance during evacuation; Failure to properly maintain the aircraft’s landing gear and related systems; Failure to provide prompt medical assistance following the crash; and Failure to have adequate emergency response procedures in place.”

In response to a query from National Post, Delta noted that the captain was hired in 2007 and “has served both as an active duty Captain and in pilot training and flight safety capacities. The co-founder of a Venezuelan voting technology firm is facing allegations of bribery raised by federal prosecutors in Florida. Roger Piñate, who co-founded Smartmatic with Antonio Mugica in 2000, is currently charged with money laundering and bribery regarding contracts the company had in the Philippines, allegedly in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

The federal government has accused Piñate and his co-defendants, all executives of “Company 1” of paying more than a million dollars in bribes to Juan Andres Donato Bautista, the Chairman of the Philippine Commission on Elections (COMELEC). The bribes were “paid to obtain, maintain and receive payments on a lucrative contract to provide voting machines…to the government of the Philippines for its May 2016 national and local elections.” The contract was valued at $182 million.

To support their case, federal prosecutors will introduce “witness testimony, photographs, and text communications” to show that Tibisay Lucena Ramirez, an employee of the Venezuelan National Election Council (CNE), was also paid a bribe for “assistance with Company 1’s status as an election services provider in Venezuela going forward” after Smartmatic pulled out of Venezuela following the country’s 2017 elections. During those elections, alleged fraud was uncovered and Smartmatic pointed the finger at the Maduro regime.

Piñate allegedly gave Lucena Ramirez an upper-middle class home with a pool in Caracas in order to assist with “Company 1’s” status as an election provider in Venezuela. Prosecutors assert that they have text communications between Piñate and others discussing the transfer of the title to Lucena Ramirez through a third party “to conceal the source and nature of the transfer.”

The case stems from a November 2024 ruling by the Tribunal, which fined Mayor Harold McQuaker of Emo, Ontario, and the municipality a combined $15,000 after the mayor voted against a 2020 request from activist group Borderland Pride to proclaim June as “Pride Month” and fly the rainbow flag.

During council debate, Mayor McQuaker remarked, “There’s no flag being flown for the other side of the coin… there’s no flags being flown for the straight people.” The Tribunal’s adjudicator, Karen Dawson, ruled that this comment demonstrated the vote was motivated by discrimination, awarding $5,000 in damages from the mayor and $10,000 from the township to Borderland Pride.

McQuaker and the town’s Chief Administrative Officer were also ordered to complete a “Human Rights 101” course within 30 days. Borderland Pride later obtained an order to garnish the mayor’s bank account to recover the fine plus legal costs.

The CCF will argue the Tribunal failed to consider the mayor’s Charter-protected right to freedom of expression and did not apply the balancing test outlined by the Supreme Court of Canada in Ward v. Quebec.

Eleven people have been arrested in connection with the operation, including the ringleader. The scheme charged migrants the equivalent of $4,700 per person, according to the release.

The investigation started in September 2024 after the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) became aware of multiple cases of Yemeni citizens attempting to get into Canada from Spain using fake passports, Spanish police said.

Air Canada flight attendants could go on strike as early as Aug. 16 after overwhelmingly voting to authorize their union to strike if it decides to do so.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced the results of the vote to authorize strike action that ran from July 28 to Aug. 5, saying that 99.7 percent of Air Canada flight attendants who are union members voted in favor.

“The company would rather drag their feet than negotiate on the things that matter to our members. Now, flight attendants have had a chance to weigh in and tell the company it’s time to get serious about negotiating,” Air Canada’s CUPE President Wesley Lesosky said in an Aug. 5 statement.

According to the union, negotiations with the airline broke down in July, leading to the vote. According to CUPE’s Air Canada chapter, entry-level flight attendants’ salaries have only gone up by 10 percent in the past 25 years, falling far below inflation, which has gone up around 169 percent in the same time period.

“While the airline continues to slap junk fees on flyers and gouge the public, they’re also exploiting their own employees by severely underpaying flight attendants or refusing to pay them at all for safety-critical aspects of our jobs,” Lesosky said. “Air Canada has raked billions in profits in the past few years. They can afford to pay us fairly without raising costs for the public.”

Police issued a warning in June about an increase in late-night break and enters happening at residential properties between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., noting homeowners were often asleep at the time.

Suspects gained entry to homes by cutting through the screens of unlocked windows or coming through unlocked doors, police said at the time. They would then take vehicle keys and other valuables, such as purses and phones.

Calgary Police Service (CPS) said officers executed three search warrants at homes in Calgary’s southeast as part of the investigation.

Eight adults and nine youth are now facing more than 100 charges in connection to around 45 break and enters in the city. The suspects include Anei Mou, 22, Abdelhamid Daoud, 19, Johnny Vital, 29, Devin Duncan, 43, Olympia Medicine-Traveller, 30, Ruot Lony, 22, Gehan Ali, 18, and Derara Khadir, 19.

“Given the significant importance of data security to the integrity of our business, we are prepared for incidents of this nature and followed our response planning by taking immediate action to contain the incident and secure our systems,” the company said in a July 18 press release.

“Thanks to our internal precautionary measures, no credit card or debit card numbers and no guest user passwords were obtained.”

Lee Zeldin, who was named President Donald Trump’s EPA administrator in January, told Fox News in a recent interview that Quebec vehicle-maker Lion Electric failed to deliver many of the buses it was paid for.

“The Biden administration sent all of the money… They gave all the money up front. Well, guess what? They just declared bankruptcy,” he said referring to Lion Electric’s move to file for bankruptcy protection last December.

Lion Electric received just shy of US$160 million to manufacture hundreds of battery-powered buses for school districts across the United States as part of the previous government’s climate agenda, said Zeldin.

Lion has also received more than $177 million from the Quebec government and $30 million from Ottawa.

Federal documents show that the U.S. government gave Lion Electric US$159 million to manufacture 435 battery-powered buses between October 2022 and May 2024 under the EPA’s US$5 billion Clean School Bus program. Continue…

Canadian firm to make drones for navy's Halifax-class ships: defence department

The federal government has contracted a Canadian firm to outfit the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class ships with a small fleet of aerial drones.

Ottawa announced it has awarded two contracts to MDA Space for up to six advanced “uncrewed aircraft systems” for the Navy’s patrol frigates.

The Department of National Defence says in a news release that this will boost the navy’s long-range maritime surveillance abilities.

The department has earmarked $39 million to acquire the first two drones, with an option of ordering another four.

The initial five-year service contract is estimated to be worth $27 million and its time frame could be extended by the department to 20 years.

The new drone capability is expected to start coming online in 2028 and to be working at full capacity by 2032.

“Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty and are holding flood relief and property tax cuts hostage,” Abbott said.

“I ordered Texas DPS to arrest and return every derelict House Democrat to the Texas Capitol,” Abbott added.

Denmark reintroduced the proposal on July 1, the first day of its EU Council presidency. France, once opposed, is now in favor, Korben said, citing Patrick Breyer, a former member of the European Parliament for Germany and the European Pirate Party.

Belgium, Hungary, Sweden, Italy and Spain are also in favor, while Germany remains undecided. However, if Berlin joins the majority, a qualified council vote could push the plan through by mid-October, Korben said.
