A cargo ship named the W-Sapphire, a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier, exploded in Baltimore Harbor on Monday, August 18, 2025, near the site of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The explosion, which occurred around 6 p.m. and was captured on video, caused a large fireball and significant smoke plumes from the ship's forward section.

Fortunately, all 23 crew members on board were accounted for and uninjured.

Ship Details: The vessel involved was the MV W-Sapphire, a 751-foot bulk carrier flagged under Liberia, which was carrying coal and en route to Port Louis, Mauritius.
