On the colonnades in St. Peter’s Square
Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s great oval colonnades around St. Peter’s Square are crowned by 140 statues of saints, each about 3.1 m tall.
They represent defenders of the faith, founders of religious orders, popes, bishops, doctors of the Church, and martyrs from across Catholic history.
On the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica
The front façade of the basilica has 13 large statues: Christ the Redeemer in the center, flanked by John the Baptist and 11 apostles (Matthias instead of Judas; Peter is shown by a separate big statue down in the square).
So when you look up at the Vatican’s main square and basilica, you’re basically seeing Christ plus a “cloud of witnesses”—rows of saints and martyrs watching over the piazza.
