President Donald Trump said Iran negotiators made "a significant proposal, a significant step," following the ultimatum he issued on Easter Sunday, but it is not "good enough."
"They made a proposal, and it's a significant proposal, a significant step," Trump told reporters at the Easter Egg Roll on Monday, a White House tradition that comes amid the backdrop of war.
"It's not good enough, but it's a very significant step," Trump continued."They are negotiating now. And they have made a very significant step. We'll see what happens."
Trump's media gaggle offered previews of Monday's 1 p.m. news conference detailing the rescue of the downed airmen behind Iran's enemies lines, saying the airmen "are both recovering very well" andIran "got lucky" in downing their F-15e jet.
"You know what? When you do thousands and thousands of flights, and you have one plane shot down and not mortally,the two pilots got out โ they got a little bit lucky," Trump said. "And you know what? In a way you need a little bit of luck. Also, they got a little bit lucky. That's all they got."
Trump is warning someunspecificied consequences for refusing to "cry uncle" and come to heel and reopenthe Strait of Hormuz to global oil trade.
"We are obliterating that country, andI hate to do it, but we're obliterating, and they just don't want to say uncle โ they don't want to cry, as the expression goes, uncle, but they will," Trump said. "And if they don't, they'll have no bridges, they'll have no power plants. They'll have no anything.
"I won't go further, because there are other things that are worse than those two."
Trump did not rule out taking over Iran's oil.
"If I had my choice, what would I like to do? Take the oil, because it's there for the taking; there's not a thing they can do about it," Trump continued. "Unfortunately, the American people would like to see us come home. If it were up to me, I'd take the oil. I'd keep the oil.KEK
"I would make plenty of money, andI'd also take care of the people of Iran much better than they've been taken care of. It's been horrible."
Trump pointed to the arrangement with Venezuela as apotential model for the next phase once Iran comes to heel, including ==the "lunatics" needing to give up their nuclear weapons aspirations.
"Hopefully it could be over with quickly," Trump concluded before returning to the traditional White House Easter Egg Roll. "Again, there are lots of different alternatives. We have many alternatives.
"We could leave right now, and it would take them 15 years to rebuild what they have. We could leave right now, but I want to finish it up."

Ohio's first student-led satellite heads to space April 8

While all eyes have been on NASA's Artemis II, which launched April 1 to fly four astronauts around the moon, dozens of current and former University of Cincinnati students have been focused on another launch scheduled for April 8.
A satellite slightly bigger than a Rubik's Cube will blast into space aboard NASAโs Northrop Grumman CRS-24 cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station.
"We are the first student-led satellite organization to create a cube satellite in the state of Ohio, and the first satellite ever made by the University of Cincinnati," explains UC CubeCats President Nathan Nguyen.
Nguyen and around 30 other current and former club members are traveling to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to watch the launch.
"I'm honestly ecstatic," Nguyen tells WVXU. "It has been a decade in the process of doing this project and having generations of CubeCats members come together and create a satellite that is functioning and is working as we are hoping to, and sending it off to NASA has been such an experience."
CubeCats is a UC student organization founded in 2015 to design, build and operate flight-ready spacecraft systems. In 2018, NASA accepted the group's Project Leopard into its CubeSat Launch Initiative.
Over the years, around 120 students created a roughly Rubik's Cube-sized satellite โ 10cm x 10cm x 10cm โ that will test if a thin carbon sheeting can block radiation effectively.
That's important because if NASA wants to get to Mars, it needs a material that can protect astronauts from radiation during the long trip.
"We're trying to see how well this material will protect humans in space against all these different kinds of radiation," Sam Kohls, program manager of CubeCats, and a senior majoring in mechanical engineering technology told WVXU earlier this year.
"There's a lot of different types, but what we're trying to do is, there is a radiation that typically is blocked by things like water and lead. Those materials are really heavy and hard to get to space.
With our material, it's very, very light, so we hope we're able to take some of the weight from those materials and replace it with our lightweight material."
The students officially handed the satellite โ known as LeopardSat-1 โ over to NASA in January, and have been eagerly awaiting the launch.
"All of it is in NASA's hands," Nyugen says. "Our only job now is to sit there and watch in amazement as it finally launches and see all of our hard work come to fruition."
You can see a replica of the LeopardSat-1 satellite on display at the Cincinnati Observatory through April 7.
UC CubeCats aren't done. The student group already is working on its next satellite, HabSat-1, which will be used to study harmful algal blooms on the Great Lakes.
