The Holocaust figure comes from post‑war demographic studies, not from pre‑war rhetoric.
After WWII, researchers compared:
pre‑war Jewish population estimates
post‑war census data
Nazi records
immigration records
survivor counts
Independent scholars, governments, and Jewish organizations all arrived at roughly the same number: about 5.7–6.3 million Jews murdered.
This number is not based on slogans or earlier articles — it’s based on population accounting, the same method used to estimate casualties in any large-scale conflict.

It feels strange because the same number appears in two different contexts:
Pre‑WWII: “Six million Jews are suffering / at risk”

Eastern Europe’s Jewish population was about 6 million before WWII.
Relief groups used that number rhetorically.
The Nazis murdered the majority of that same population.
