the flowing water under the mesa might be flowing past a salt deposit which creates a magnetic amplification of a rare earth mineral deposit.
CAUTION
the flowing water could have created a large massive cave system and if the cave system was created by a lava flow then the caves could be enormous and drilling the wrong one could collapse the mesa into an unfathomable sinkhole.
