House Dems’ efforts if they take back the majority could provide a backbone for the accountability message the party intends to continue into the 2028 presidential election season.

Democrats are readying a long list of investigations they want to launch into Donald Trump.
Reps. Robert Garcia and Jamie Raskin, who would lead the Oversight and Judiciary committees, respectively, if the party takes back the House, said they’re wasting no time in preparing an all-out oversight campaign targeting Trump, his family and his administration.
Both know that House Dems’ efforts now could provide a backbone for the accountability message the party intends to continue into the 2028 presidential election season.
“We are going to be looking at systems of bribery, kickback and financial corruption and opportunities for disgorgement and restitution to the American people,” Raskin said. “That would be No. 1.”
Topping their long list of controversies they want to probe: Trump’s acceptance of a Qatari jet for use as his new Air Force One, and his family’s massively profitable cryptocurrency investments.
Raskin also said he intends to probe whathe deems “fraudulent and vindictive prosecutions,” including those of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Garcia, meanwhile, said he is determined to fill in gaps he sees in the GOP-led investigation into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
White House spokesperson Olivia Wales responded to Democrats’ plans by stating the president “will continue to draw a sharp contrast with his commonsense agenda and radical Democrats who want to massively raise taxes, defund the police, and are soft on crime.”
Garcia and Raskin’s preparations in some ways resemble how their predecessors planned ahead of the 2018 midterms. But that year, Democrats tiptoed around the prospect of impeachment for fear of alienating voters, then launched a flurry of investigations aimed at Trump once they were in power.
Now, after two impeachments that failed to remove Trump from office and with a party base intent on pulling no punches, House Democrats are reluctant to take anything off the table — while also recognizing the limitations of impeachment as a check on Trump’s power.
“Nobody on the Democratic side is afraid of impeachment,” Raskin said this week, adding that he considers it a “tool in the toolbox.”

— SCANDAL-PLAGUED CANDIDATES TEST PARTIES’ LIMITS: Democrats and Republicans this election cycle keep playing whack-a-mole as candidate after candidate becomes embroiled in controversies ranging from domestic violence to sexual misconduct. Neither party has developed a clear playbook yet for when to step in or what counts as disqualifying. But identifying that line could become a key effort in determining who controls the next Congress, as several races with problematic candidates have been or could become battlegrounds.
— LAWMAKERS BRISTLE OVER POCKET RESCISSION SEASON: With less than 45 days left in the fiscal year, the time is right for pocket rescissions — the controversial tactic Trump used last year to cancel billions of dollars in foreign aid without Congress’ consent. If the White House takes that tack again, it will not be well received on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers in both parties continue to bristle over Trump’s ongoing assault on their funding power.

Russia-Ukraine war: North Korea deploys 400-strong drone unit to aid Putin — Report

A senior Ukrainian intelligence official warned that the latest wave of North Korean troops in Russia includes a dedicated drone unit capable of striking targets directly inside Ukraine, according to a new CNN report.
CNN, citing Major General Vadym Skibitskiy, Deputy Head of Ukrainian Defence Intelligence, reported that there are already 8,500 North Korean soldiers stationed in Russia.
This growing deployment signals a major expansion of the military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, building on the mutual defence pact the two nations signed two years ago.
The current North Korean forces are primarily concentrated in Russia’s Kursk region. Key operational details outlined in the report include:
A 400-strong drone unit, utilising experience from previous deployments, is expected to conduct both surveillance and offensive operations within Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin may request up to 50,000 additional troops during a scheduled meeting with Kim Jong Un this September.
An estimated 25,000 North Korean soldiers have rotated through the Russian military to date, with initial deployments experiencing significant casualties due to mass-rush tactics.
Despite the buildup, Skibitskiy noted that North Korean troops are expected to reinforce rear positions rather than fight directly on Ukrainian soil, thereby freeing up Russian forces for frontline assaults.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, strongly denied the claims of a massive upcoming troop surge, labelling it a “groundless self-fabricated scenario.”
Geopolitical pressures
This deepening alliance comes at a critical moment for Kyiv, which is currently facing a severe shortage of air defence systems. The partnership is also raising red flags across the NATO alliance.
These concerns have been further amplified following President Donald Trump’s recent announcement to scale down joint US-South Korea military exercises in an effort to avoid antagonising the North Korean leader.
Munitions and technology exchange
Beyond providing manpower, Pyongyang is actively bolstering Russia’s munitions stockpile and missile capabilities. CNN highlighted several key facets of this technological exchange:
North Korea supplied at least 150 KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles before August of last year, with another 120 promised.
Roughly 40 of these new missiles have been delivered, and Ukraine suspects two were used in a July 30 strike in Radushne that killed four children.
Around 90 North Korean personnel are currently stationed in Voronezh to assist with launches, using the conflict to refine their targeting and payload capabilities.
In exchange for this support, North Korea has requested Russia's advanced S400 air defence system and has already received a Pantsir-1 surface-to-air missile launcher.
Russian general Lyamin takes charge of new drone warfare branch
Colonel-General Denis Lyamin has assumed the duties of head of Russia's Unmanned Systems Forces, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday.
On August 5, Putin appointed Lyamin to lead the newly established branch of the military responsible for drone warfare.
The Defence Ministry said on Friday that Defence Minister Andrei Belousov had signed the relevant order, formally installing Lyamin in the post.

Former Assistant US Attorney Found Dead Inside Federal Building in San Diego After Being Reported Missing
Former Assistant US Attorney Andrew Haden was found dead inside the Edward J Schwartz Federal Building in San Diego, California, on Wednesday after he was reported missing.
The 48-year-old veteran prosecutor was found dead in a vacant office after he was reported missing.
Police do not suspect foul play.
The San Diego Tribune reported it’s suspected that Andrew Haden took his own life.
“Out of an abundance of caution, SDPD investigators responded to the scene, and no foul play is suspected,” San Diego Police Department spokesperson Ashley Nicholas said in a statement. “The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner.”
Andrew Haden served in the US Navy for five years and completed two deployments in Iraq and Liberia.

Assistant U.S. Atty. Andrew Haden was found dead in an office inside the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building in San Diego on Wednesday, shortly after being reported missing. There were no signs of foul play involved, authorities said.
Haden, 48, had worked for the U.S. attorney’s office since 2010 and twice served as acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California during transitions of leadership — once for around two months in 2023 and then again for another two-month stint in 2025.
Southern District U.S. Atty. Adam Gordon confirmed Haden’s death in a statement, saying Thursday was “one of the darkest days in our office’s history, but there was nothing dark about Andrew Haden’s life.”
San Diego police received a report of a missing man late Wednesday evening and found him dead in an office at 880 Front St. shortly after, according to department spokesperson Ashley Nicholes. The address is that of the downtown San Diego federal building, which houses the U.S. attorney’s office.

Israel warns Türkiye over Syria
Defense Minister Katz spoke out after an IDF strike on a Syrian airbase allegedly being prepared for Turkish forces
Israel has warned Türkiye against expanding Ankara’s military involvement in Syria, days after striking a Syrian airbase it claimed was being prepared for Turkish forces.
West Jerusalem attacked the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria on Tuesday, damaging the facility but causing no reported casualties.
“[Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan is dragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria,” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote on X on Thursday.
Katz went on to accuse Erdogan of making “empty and delusional” anti-Israel speeches and warned him against testing the country’s determination to defend itself.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Damascus was about to violate a security “status quo” by allowing Turkish troops to deploy there. Syria and Türkiye denied any such deployment was planned.
The rivalry between Israel and Türkiye has increasingly spilled into Syria, where Ankara has emerged as a key backer of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and is helping train and rebuild the country’s armed forces. Israel has opposed a Turkish military foothold, arguing it could threaten its security and restrict its freedom to operate in Syria.
Middle East Eye reported this week, citing Turkish government insiders, that Ankara views the Abu al-Duhur strike as a challenge to its credibility as a regional security partner. It came less than two weeks after Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, under which an attack on one is considered an attack on all three, potentially raising the stakes of any direct military confrontation involving Türkiye.
According to MEE, Israel also did not use its military hotline with Türkiye before the strike, raising the risk of an unintended confrontation.
US Ambassador to Türkiye and Syria envoy Tom Barrack called the attack an “unnecessary escalation” and urged the sides to avoid further military incidents.

China Firmly Rejects US Demand To Back Its 'Most Crushing Economic Operation' Against Iran
China has firmly rejected Washington's call to join in implementing US sanctions to "squash" Iran's economy, pushing back against Trump administration pressure to be part of the "toughest sanctions in history" which has marked a new phase of conflict focused on extended economic warfare, as a military solution is seen as increasingly unrealistic and unlikely.
"Regarding the Iran issue, sanctions and pressure do not help resolve the problem," Reuters quoted a representative of the Chinese Embassy in Washington as saying. The White House's new plan is to include heavy reliance on international pressure on external countries to impose extreme isolation on the Islamic Republic.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the same to reporters Friday in a regular briefing. "China calls on all relevant parties to take responsible measures and resolve the problem through political and diplomatic means," he said.
Asked specifically about the latest comments of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Lin emphasized the need for all parties to take "responsible measures" in resolving the war. "China opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council," Lin said.
Bessent had on Thursday told CNBC: "It is a one-two punch. We have the blockade (on Iran), and we are going to have the toughest sanctions in history." He then vowed, "It is going to work in Iran and we are going to collapse this regime."
He further invoked some (infamous) words of President George W. Bush issued to allies in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. "You are either with us, or against us," Bessent said in the interview. "This is going to be the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world."
Such back-and-white rhetoric is very unlikely to sway the Chinese, given also that of course they know what happened next after that original proclamation by Bush - American forces got stuck in no less than two quagmires in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Iraq, in what came to be viewed cynically as 'forever wars'.
What's more as the blowback in Baghdad was pretty immediate, as a key unintended consequence of the US regime change war was the ascendancy of pro-Iran Shia politicians ruling Iraq. Beijing is all too aware of the US score card in the region, even as Washington decision-makers continue ignoring the glaring lessons of recent history.
Bessent seemed perplexed at the reaction in oil prices on Thursday, while he also said that discussions with Beijing would be best done in private:
"I think oil markets are misinterpreting what this economic pressure means," Bessent said on Thursday. Oil prices climbed to more than three-week highs on Thursday.
"We have asymmetric information, and I'm not sure why oil has popped up on this," Bessent said. "If we are doing the maximum economic pressure, then that means that likely there will not be a large-scale kinetic restart."
When asked if the U.S. could target China for doing business with Iran, Bessent said many conversations were best to have in private.
"We are confident that everyone wants the Strait (of Hormuz) reopened, and for energy prices to come back down," he continued. "Keep in mind that the Chinese get 50% (of their) energy from inside the Gulf. So it would do them a big service to get with the program."
Still, Bessent has been busy doubling-down on Trump's message shift this week (opting for an economic siege warfare 'solution' as after military strategy hasn't gone so well)…
