US oil companies tripled profits during Iran war – NYT

American producers and refiners are getting richer, but President Donald Trump may pay the price

The US’ largest oil companies almost tripled their profits during the US-Israeli war on Iran, the New York Times has reported, at a time when soaring energy costs threaten to wipe out US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in the upcoming midterm elections.

The American oil giants – including Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and Valero – earned $130 billion in profits between April and September, according to six months worth of financial results covering more than 50 companies, combined by the New York Times. In the same period last year, these companies made less than $47 billion.

This windfall is an almost direct mirror of the extra $147 billion Americans spent on gasoline and diesel since American and Israeli warplanes began striking Iran on February 28.

With the Strait of Hormuz closed to shipping for almost all of the last six months, and Yemen’s Houthis attacking Saudi extraction sites and shipping in the Red Sea, American producers have reaped the benefit of high oil prices, with Chevron and Exxon Mobil recording higher profits than at any point since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022.

Exxon’s third-quarter profit more than doubled this year, while Chevron’s almost tripled.

American refiners have taken advantage of the widespread destruction of refining sites in the Gulf region, and the threat of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries, leveraging their safe location inside the US. Valero and Phillips 66 both posted all-time record third-quarter profits this year.

Europe’s oil giants have posted similar results, with Shell, TotalEnergies, and Repsol all more than doubling their earnings last quarter over the same timeframe in 2025, as Europeans grapple with record energy bills. Some European finance ministers have demanded that the EU impose windfall taxes on these companies in response.

At $4.29 per gallon as of Monday, US gasoline prices are now higher than they were at any point during former President Joe Biden’s four years in office, with the exception of the first three months after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Trump has described the elevated prices as a “small price to pay for” preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, but voters aren’t convinced.

This week, 72% of respondents told a Gallup poll that gasoline prices are “extremely” important in how they plan to vote in next week’s midterm elections. Most polling organizations show the Republican Party on track to lose one or both houses of Congress next week, with the GOP trailing the Democrats by between eight and nine points nationwide.

Trump has tried to alleviate some of this damage by lifting sanctions on Russian diesel, and at least three diesel tankers have left Russian ports en route to the US.Trump has also pressed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to cease attacks on Russian refineries, but Zelensky has apparently ignored these requests.

Pro-EU Polish PM brings ‘Russian bots’ into court showdown

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused his political opponents of receiving support from an “army of Russian bots”amid an escalating constitutional crisis in Warsaw. The pro-EU leader offered no proof for his claim, which came after a government-backed judge moved to oust two key officials supported by his rival, right-wing President Karol Nawrocki, from the Constitutional Tribunal, triggering public outrage.

Unrest erupted on Friday when Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, a judge elected by Tusk’s governing majority, ordered the suspension of Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski and his deputy Bartlomiej Sochanski, both linked to the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party. The tribunal’s existing leadership rejected the suspensions, declaring that all those participating in the attempted takeover “are committing the crime of a coup d’état.”

The development triggered street protests around the court building and a heavy police deployment. Nawrocki, who canceled a planned trip to Senegal, personally pushed his way into the tribunal to confront Korwin-Piotrowska and her allies, telling them that “you are not judges of the Constitutional Tribunal.”

In a televised address on Saturday evening, Tusk scrambled to defend his actions, accusing his rivals of “seeking to destroy democracy and the rule of law.” The Polish PM, a strong supporter of EU integration who served as president of the European Council from 2014 to 2019, has long criticized PiS judicial reforms – which he said undermined judges’ independence – as well as Nawrocki’s refusal to administer the oath to five Constitutional Tribunal judges elected by the current parliamentary majority.

“Is it greed, stupidity or treason?” Tusk asked, claiming that the opposition was receiving support from “pro-Russian forces worldwide.”

“In this conflict, they’re using an army of Russian bots online. In fact, they’ve even received public compliments from the Kremlin’s chief ideologue,” the prime minister claimed, without providing further proof or elaborating.

Moscow has repeatedly said it does not interfere in other countries’ domestic affairs. While Russian officials have yet to respond to Tusk’s allegation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in July denied that Russia was responsible for cyberattacks on Polish energy infrastructure.

Responding to Tusk’s address, the president’s chief of staff, Zbigniew Bogucki, called the prime minister a “pathological liar”and accused him of setting Poland ablaze while pretending to extinguish the fire. “It’s hard to find a single word, expression, or sentence that would be true, that would reflect the actual or legal reality,” he added.

Tusk’s accusation comes after several Western media outlets, anti-Russia hawks, and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky propagated the claim that Kiev’s drone strikes, which damaged several data centers operated by Russian technology giant Yandex, crippled alleged Russian bot networks supporting Western right-wing movements, including Germany’s AfD and US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement.

However, several independent investigations by cybersecurity and research firms quickly debunked the narrative. Experts in particular pointed out that one viral graph supposedly showing a collapse in AfD-related activity was found to contain fabricated or unverifiable figures.

Commenting on the chaos, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev described it as a “constitutional coup.” He suggested that “Brussels’ protégé Tusk” was persecuting PiS conservatives over the latter’s hostility toward Ukrainian Nazi collaborators.Medvedev concluded by sarcastically invoking an old schoolyard joke, saying, “And these are the people who scold my brother and me for picking our noses.”

What color is the Moon? It depends on the night and the time. Outside of the Earth's atmosphere, the dark Moon, which shines by reflected sunlight, appears a magnificently brown-tinged gray. The featured image highlights a collection of apparent colors of the full moon on Earth, documented by one astrophotographer over 10 years from different locations across Italy. A red- or yellow-colored moon usually indicates a moon seen near the horizon. There, some of the blue light has been scattered away by a long path through the Earth's atmosphere, sometimes laden with fine dust. A blue-colored moon is more rare and can indicate an atmosphere carrying larger dust particles. What created the purple moon is unclear it may be a combination of several effects. The last image captures the total lunar eclipse of 2018 July where the moon, in Earth's shadow, appeared a faint red due to light refracted through air around the Earth. Ukraine’s public debt has surged 130-fold since 2006

The IMF has warned that Kiev’s finances are unsustainable without restructuring and continued foreign assistance

Ukraine’s state and state-guaranteed debt has surged roughly 130-fold in national currency terms over the past two decades, according to figures from the country’s Finance Ministry. In recent months, Kiev has been struggling to plug multi-billion-dollar holes in its budget while pleading with its reluctant backers in the EU for more assistance.

The ministry released the updated figure on Tuesday, putting debt at 9.54 trillion hryvnias ($212.61 billion) as of late September, compared with 73.29 billion hryvnias ($14.51 billion) in September 2006.

The staggering increase is partly explained by the hryvnia’s depreciation, with the currency losing nearly 90% of its value against the US dollar over the same period. However, the increase remains substantial even in dollar terms, with the debt expanding 14.6-fold. It has also more than doubled from $97.95 billion at the end of 2021, just before the escalation of Kiev’s conflict with Russia in February 2022.

Foreign governments and international institutions now account for 66.4% of Ukraine’s debt portfolio, much of it on preferential terms, which helps to alleviate the financial burden. Kiev has a debt repayment schedule extending through 2061 and is obliged to pay almost $33 billion to global financial institutions in interest and servicing costs alone, on top of the principal of almost $107 billion. For comparison’s sake, Ukraine’s 2021 GDP was around $200 billion.

Ukraine’s dire financial strain did not escape the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which warned in July that Kiev’s debt “remains unsustainable” without restructuring and further preferential foreign assistance.

Kiev’s financial burden came into the spotlight in late summer when Vladimir Zelensky disclosed an unexpected $27 billion defense funding gap – which emerged after his 40-day PR ‘pressure campaign’ on Russia – and urged Brussels to frontload part of its €90 billion loan earmarked for 2027.

The EU, however, refused to validate the figure and approve further assistance, urging Ukraine to make progress on stalled governance and anti-corruption reforms to unlock funding that was already available. In early October, Kiev managed to plug the gap with austerity measures and by convincing the EU to defer some payments for weapons until the next year.

Still, EU foreign policy chief KajaKallas acknowledged on Thursday that European leaders were finding it increasingly difficult to justify continued assistance to Kiev because “everyone is tired of this war,”while urging Western governments to continue supporting Ukraine.

Pentagon facing up to $15 bn in Iran war base damages – WSJ

Washington is weighing a pullback from facilities in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, with some damaged infrastructure potentially left unrepaired, the report says

Iranian missile and drone strikes have inflicted up to $15 billion in damage on military installations hosting American forces across the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing sources and its own satellite imagery analysis. The massive destruction adds to the Pentagon’s mounting war bill, which has already reached nearly $50 billion.

The newspaper’s analysis identified a total of 274 damaged structures across 24 installations with an American military presence. At least 119 buildings at 13 installations were damaged in the opening two weeks alone; the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain was among the hardest hit. Tehran launched a retaliatory wave of strikes following the unprovoked US-Israeli attack which started the conflict on February 28.

An unnamed US official familiar with the matter told the WSJ that the Pentagon estimated damage to bases from Iranian strikes – which became increasingly precise as the conflict escalated – at a minimum of $5 billion. Another WSJ source suggested that the number could potentially be as high as $15 billion.

Many installations are shared with Washington’s regional allies, meaning they could potentially pay for some of the damage, the report says, adding that the Pentagon may elect not to restore some infrastructure at all.

In particular, Washington is reportedly considering pulling back from its installations in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia so that its personnel would be out of reach. Tehran has previously demanded a full-scale US military withdrawal from the region as a prerequisite for sustainable peace.

Iran, meanwhile, has been rapidly restoring missile facilities and recovering buried weapons stockpiles, the report adds, noting that the military build-up comes as US President Donald Trump is considering further strikes despite shortages in American interceptor inventories.

However, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has been dismissive about Tehran’s military potential, saying in August that “They still have some capabilities, but it’s nowhere near what it was at all.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, accused the administration of seeking to “mask the true cost of the war” after being denied access to Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base, where the WSJ identified at least a dozen damaged buildings. The Pentagon said that the ban was due to regional travel restrictions.

According to the Pentagon’s latest estimate provided to Congress, the Iran war has cost $47.1 billion through October 16, excluding base damage. The figure includes roughly $29 billion to replace expended munitions, $11.9 billion in operational expenses, and $6.1 billion in equipment losses.

As for the casualties, the US military now acknowledges 23 deaths linked to Iran war operations, including 11 from enemy fire, and 865 wounded.

Feds: Michigan Man Charged for Threatening to Kill FBI Director Kash Patel

Federal authorities arrested a Michigan man Friday for allegedly threatening to kill Federal Bureau of Investigation Director (FBI) Kash Patel and one of his associates.

The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Anthony Daniel Palazzolo of Chesterfield Township, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced Friday:

The criminal complaint charges Palazzolo with sending V-1 a message via Facebook on October 8, 2026, in which Palazzolo wrote he had “put a hit out” on V-1, and that Patel was a “dead mf too.” Following the FBI’s interview of Palazzolo, Palazzolo continued to harass a Detroit FBI agent via phone, threatening to come up to the office and “use deadly force against every single one of you government officials—FBI Secret Service will all be f[——] killed.”

Palazzolo appeared in federal court this afternoon and was temporarily detained. A detention hearing was set for November 2.

Palazzolo also allegedly messaged the U.S. Secret Service, the Supreme Court, and a court in Texas, the Daily Mail reported, citing court documents.

The outlet said he was accused of threatening to sodomize a government official in those messages, and has a lengthy criminal history spanning Michigan, Texas, and Florida.

“His prior rap sheet includes a 2018 charge for falsely reporting a terrorist threat, as well as a separate charge for making a fake bomb threat,” the Mail report stated, adding that he is facing a felony charge of transmitting threatening interstate communications.

Meanwhile, the FBI has been breaking up fraud schemes across the United States, capturing alleged members of terrorist organizations, and working to protect children from predators.

In a social media post Wednesday, Patel wrote “This FBI is crushing 764 – a violent network that targets children online, affiliated with Nihilistic Violent Extremism.”

“And across our broader fight to protect America’s children, 6,000+ child predators and human traffickers arrested — UP 13%. Our children deserve protection. Their victims deserve justice. This FBI is delivering BOTH,” he added.

He also announced Friday “The fraudsters thought they could steal from American taxpayers and get away with it. Not anymore. Yesterday, FBI Minneapolis conducted an operation and arrested 4 alleged Medicaid fraudsters tied to over $41 MILLION in intended fraud and $21.65 MILLION in actual losses.”

“And we’re just getting started,” Patel stated.
