Earlier today I opened a video app and the first few recommendations were insanely accurate — like they knew exactly what I’d been thinking about. It honestly gave me the same vibe as when my friend said casinos try to tailor things so perfectly that you feel “seen” in a strange way. Has anyone else felt weird about ultra-specific recommendations? Do you ignore them or lean into it?

I get that feeling a lot. Sometimes those recommendations feel almost too on point, and it reminds me of how apps rely on behavior patterns to predict what will keep us watching, similar to what’s explained at https://nichegamer.com/the-dopamine-economy-casinos-vs-social-media/
about tracking engagement loops. I try to mix things up by searching manually so the algorithm doesn’t trap me in the same bubble. It doesn’t always work, but at least the feed feels more diverse and less like a loop.

I’m just stopping by this topic, and it’s interesting reading how people react to personalized recommendations. I don’t pay much attention to them myself, but sometimes they do show something surprisingly fitting. I think it’s just part of how modern apps function, and whether it feels helpful or creepy probably depends on your mood and how much you use them. Either way, cool thread to stumble on.
