how do I make my lines look less like shit

Every time I draw something and compare it to someone else's work the first thing I tend to notice is that my lines are noticeably worse and are more dirty. How do I make good looking lines /loomis/?

(pic unrelated it's just something I found on Google)

In what way? I've done some experiments using a tiny 6x4 inch tablet, which I pretty much have to use the stabilizer with. I find it's easy to draw clean lines, but it's hard to make sharp lines or apply pen pressure properly.

I find it hard to get the lines I won't because of the input lag, they are smoother but not in the right place.

Yeah, you have to start your line ahead of where you think it should be. I should probably mention that I never sketch anything with the stabilizer, I just go over lines that I already drew.

You clearly have no idea how to use the stabliizer tools or have some $20 walmart tablet. Use the other settings and adjust it as needed. Adjust your monitor and input lag, too.

Tumblr is banning adult content soon, even if that's not your thing maybe consider making a Newgrounds account for old time's sake like many people are doing out of solidarity with our degenerate brothers and sisters. It'll never be as big as Twitter or something like that, but there isn't that compelling of a reason not to have one considering how cozy it remains to be.

first there were cave paintings, and then shit like hieroglyphs where they got a better handle of proportions, and then there was perspective, and now we've had photorealism for long enough that (((modern "art"))) has been around for a while as a response to conventional art.

i don't think this is the end though. i think it's naive and hubristic to believe that we've reached the pinnacle of what can be done with art from a technical perspective. i'm pretty sure cavement fingerpainting with berry juice tens of thousands of years ago thought the same thing. so what do you think might be the next advancement? maybe there's a human sense that we haven't discovered yet, or maybe it's possible to make images that stimulate your brain so that it makes you hallucinate smells, but the guy who invents that won't be born until 2118

Traditional and man-made art will always have a niche. AI or neural networks will never completely take over, as there will always be people who want something unique that was made by a human.

Even today, made to order furniture is a thing. It is just became more of a luxury nowadays. Despite photography's existence, family portraits are a thing too. People pay a lot to have their family or pets painted.

What are some artists you look up to?

Do you just like their art or the subject as well?

Starting out with Arata Yokoyama.

He mostly does these rough painting looking art, though sometimes he spends time refining them more to create cleaner paintings.

90% of what he paints is casual cute girls doing casual cute girl things, which is something I aspire to paint, so there's that.

There are better artist I like like Dalí and Beksiński, but they're pretty well known here, so I'm going to stick to more unknown ones to show people new artists. Feel free to post well known artists though.

Not really a direct inspiration, but this guy (or girl) really fascinates me, his drawings seem to follow a really confusing sequential narrative and for the past 3-4 years he's been drawing only minimalist surreal forms. Pic related are drawings when he got popular.

He mostly does Warhams40k and some OC.

Dude was active in devart back in 2010s before he bulk erased his galleries.

I really like the way he does colors and texture. His linearts are likewise over the top.

Probably the greatest talent to ever exist. To be able to draw without reference and just start in a corner and fill an entire mural from memory and without perspective grids or any kind of layout and get the proportions and perspective perfect and at this level of detail is a one in a trillion talent.

He's said before he doesn't have a photographic memory, and sort of wings it with these as in he's making decisions re perspective and proportions as he goes along taking into account his previous marks on the mural, not like he has the entire thing in his head already. Not to deny his talents at all, he's amazing. Definitely better than that actual savant from USA in terms of doing aesthetic work too.

His backstory is quite funny. He's drawn pretty much 24/7 his whole life apart from his military service where he was constantly observing machinery and guns and thinking about drawing them. He's the unacademic "lazy artist" of his family but still has to be the best at what he does in the world. Fucking east asians and their superpowers, lel.

Fuck no. Resources can be gathered and there's no one size fits all way to learn. If you're going to invest pay for direct instruction from a competent artist. Besides your mom already does so much for you. Get her something nice instead.

When I think about it, the reason I wanted to draw in the first place was to make game sprites. They don't even have to be complex looking, but they do have to have some level of appeal like pic related. So creating original sprites, and animating them, that is all I care about right now, and going through a bunch of figure drawing lessons seems like a huge detour from that. It makes me wonder when the hell I'd be able to start doing what I actually wanted to do in the first place. How should I approach something like this? I doubt Matt Groening studied plates of vilppu in order to make the Simpsons.

If they came out like Isaac I would find that satisfactory if that's what you mean. I would of course like my sprites to be better, but I would rather have sub-par sprites made in the near future, than really good ones made years from now when I don't care anymore.

>>11765

>I mean, it's most likely fine by him because he's filthy rich and popular, but personally I can't fap to Simpson or Futurama porn because of the overbites.

Apparently some people can, but the point is I would like to draw with purpose, but it really goes against any advice you see online these days. Matt Groening's goal was to make silly cartoon characters, so that's what he did. It reminds me of the learning Japanese threads where people would do things to learn a language piecemeal. You can do flash cards until the cows come home, but unless you're actually reading it's not going to help you. If you wanted to make a manga for example, when exactly are you going to get around to it? I don't think you'll ever reach a point of, "Now I'm good enough", and you'll just masterfully be able to create perfect compositions with appealing character designs if all you've been doing for years is drawing naked people over and over, and by the time you get to it all your enthusiasm for the original idea is probably gone. Things like this have already happened to me too many times.

I'm not trying to shit on the idea of studying fundamentals, but anecdotally, for any successful artist it always seems to be the opposite. They drew whatever they felt like for years, and then went back to do focused practice later in life, one of the most common complaints I see is "How do I apply this to what I actually want to use it for", and I have never heard a success story of anyone starting late in life and ending up satisfied with their art after following /ic/ guides for years. When does one escape practice hell? How should you divide practice and your intended goal? Maybe I'm retarded and this is common sense for most people.

You could go aiming straight away to your goal but don't expect for it to be aesthetically pleasing in your first attempt. In the end of the day, is all about how skillful are you into drawing. I'm pretty sure someone who have mastered in drawing illustration can pull out sprite artwork fairly confidently.

The Picasso meme that everyone is an artist as a child is true. I don't think there was any one thing that made me think "I'll be an artist". I'm not, and have no real desire to be, a professional artist. But I never lacked encouragement, materials, ideas since my dad was a professional painter and messed around with other stuff like stop motion animation, which he taught me. Drawing was probably the only thing I had more of a knack for than anyone at school, so keeping hold of that little bit of social capital was motivation, plus I always enjoyed the process of drawing. Smh I fell out of practice (but didn't consciously quit) because of "adult" things getting in the way and only started grinding back mostly what I'd lost again recently.

I know what you are getting at.

The thing with hentai is that you lose the "cool, wacky, artistic, authentic" vibe the stronger the fanservice gets.

It is hard to carry authentic style over to sexuality and as soon as the sexuality stands alone, the only thing that keeps up the suspension of disbelief at that point is realism. When at that point boobs look like balloons and the vulva is misplaced, I just massively cringe.

At such a point, there is no message to be carried over. There is only the sexuality, and it is carried bad. Someone wants to convey not a message, but an accurate erotic depiction then, and honestly failed. It's actually sad.
