I guess it wasn't 100% from scratch, as Harvard also had Dartmuth BASIC installed so they could run that and compare behavior. Perhaps they disassembled it and looked at the code. In those days automated tools for that probably didn't exist but you could do it by hand of course.
Or maybe they used Darkmutt BASIC interactively to just copy behavior and back-engineer its workings that way. Neither approach was necessary though as they had a document fully describing BASIC so you could just create a clone from that too. The differences between the mainframe they had access to and the microcomputer chips they were targeting probably made just copying the behavior much more efficient. And their BASIC was eventually ported to bigger iron and was indeed way faster. I believe only HP's BASIC was faster, it was also from scratch.

Well it's become clear to tech people that they can't work on stuff as students with University resources. On the plus side our computers are all supercomputers now so students don't need to use the University's resources to build their own stuff.
I don't even know if they HAVE big multi-user Unix machines at Universities and big companies any more. I doubt it. And that's lame - part of Unix's draw (and NLS before it) was the idea of an online community of collegaues who could share communications and information even if they were located remotely.
Now we have like 20 proprietary things to replace a traditional multi-user Unix system. Slack, Teams, OneDrive, Office (gotta have FORMATTING and not just beautiful plain text!), GitHub, etc… All making massive money. Why don't Universities collaborate on making IRC with inline file links and videochat (OH WAIT THEY HAD THAT WITH CUSEEME which could even multicast) and self host and keep the billions of dollars they're paying for shite closed versions of stuff?

My phone is shit and this was surprisingly more difficult than it should have been. Aside from the little dots that are nuclear power plants the big areas owned by DoE are in Arizona, Washington, Idaho and South Carolina.
The one in WA is partially the Hanford waste dump from WW2 but it's also a research facility, the one in Nevada is part of area 51 (DoE has all the actual scientists, not DoD) and I have no idea what's going on in Idaho or Georgia.
This is from the National Geographics Family Reference third edition published in 2010. Everything online that has federal lands just lumps them all together. Some separate DoD from everything else but I can't find anything new that shows DoE lands… except this of course. Big reason I bought it in the first place.
