Yellow Vests DEFY Covid-19, lockdown & TEAR GAS to protest Macron government

Yellow Vest demonstrators aren’t letting a ban on mass gatherings or fears of coronavirus stop them from expressing their opposition to the French government, and are staging their weekly protests in Paris.

France’s Interior Minister Christophe Castaner on Friday banned all gatherings of more than 100 people but hundreds of demonstrators are continuing the weekly Yellow Vest vigil and are protesting at Paris landmarks.

Thousands of French security forces personnel hit the streets of the capital in a bid to clamp down on the movement, which has now been running for 70 consecutive weeks.

Eyewitness footage shows riot police firing tear gas in a bid to subdue the activists as the protests spiralled towards violence.

In a televized address to the nation on Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron announced school closures and urged people to avoid close contact for fear of spreading the virus, which has killed 79 people in France and infected more than 3,600.

Before that announcement Paris police had already rejected requests from protesters to demonstrate at prominent sites in the French capital.

The demonstration comes just a day before voters are set to go to the polls in local elections, in which Macron’s party is forecast to fare poorly.

The French president decided to press ahead with the elections despite schools and universities being shut and public transport curtailed due to contagion fears.

U.S.-Affiliated Arms Trafficker Assassinated In Southern Syria

A militant who worked as an arm trafficker for the U.S.-led Military Operations Center (MOC) in Jordan was reportedly assassinated in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa on March 11.

Two unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle shot and killed the trafficker, Farzat Muhammad al-Mahamid, along with his brother, Ihab Mohammed Al-Mahameed, on a road near the town of Om Elmiathin in eastern Daraa.

Farzat had reportedly joined the reconciliation process and received guarantees that he will not be targeted by Syrian security forces.

Such assassinations are usually blamed on the Syrian intelligence. However, there is a chance that the trafficker was targeted by a terrorist group, like ISIS whose cells are known to be active in Daraa.

On March 11, an intense fighting erupted among Turkish-backed militant groups in the town of Azaz in northwestern Syria. According to reports, the clashes took place in the southern vicinity of the town and caused a state of panic among locals. SecAf Reveals When New US Space Command HQ Will Be Selected

As the U.S. Space Force begins to redesignate Air Force units with a space-only mission and to realign and rename bases accordingly, it will also restart its search for a permanent headquarters for U.S. Space Command, the military's 11th combatant command, which stood up in August.

"We will be issuing an invitation for communities to come forward and identify that they would like to [be considered]," Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett said Tuesday. She first disclosed the move last week during a House Armed Services Committee hearing.

The Pentagon will make its choice "late in the year, or early next year," she said during an Air Force Association event in Washington, D.C.

The new process is a result of staff and personnel movements between Space Command and the U.S. Space Force, Barrett said. The newest military branch, which falls under the Department of the Air Force, was signed into law in December.

"That reshuffles what would be the command headquarters operation, so we are reevaluating and restarting that process," she said.

The secretary's latest comments come after Defense Secretary Mark Esper last week disclosed that some lawmakers whose states are vying to host SPACECOM felt the process wasn't transparent enough.

"During my talks on the Hill prior to my nomination, particularly after my hearing here, I visited the House and heard from members on both sides of the aisle that they thought the process that had been run was unfair and not transparent," Esper said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing March 4. US Develops Cryptocurrency Intelligence Program Targeting P2P Sites, Forums, Darknet Markets

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has revealed a cryptocurrency intelligence program aimed at identifying unlicensed crypto businesses using P2P sites, online forums, and darknet markets. These areas have consistently presented “a significant challenge to law enforcement” and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Cryptocurrency Intelligence Program

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released its budget overview for the fiscal year 2021 last week. The department has several programs that monitor crypto activities, including the Bulk Cash Smuggling Center (BCSC), which provides operational support in the enforcement and prohibition of bulk cash smuggling or transfer of illicit proceeds.

A sniper who terrorized the D.C. area and was sentenced to life in prison may get parole after Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam signed a juvenile sentencing law into effect Monday.

The law allows prisoners who were convicted of crimes before they turned 18 and are serving life terms to be considered for parole after they spent at least 20 years in prison, Fox 5 DC reported. Northam signed the law into effect Monday, and the law ultimately ended a pending Supreme Court case regarding the Washington, D.C., sniper Lee Boyd Malvo.

Malvo was serving a life sentence after he terrorized the D.C. area in 2002 at age 17, according to Fox 5 DC. The young man was 15 when he came from Jamaica and met John Allen Muhammad, who indoctrinated Malvo and led him on a sniping spree throughout the United States that ended in 10 deaths throughout Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Malvo was sentenced to life in prison by a Virginia judge, and Muhammed was sentenced to death and executed in 2009, The New York Times reported.

His case was pending before the Supreme Court following high court rulings that juveniles cannot be given life sentences, and that life sentences should only be given to “rare children whose crimes reflect irreparable corruption.”

Both Malvo’s lawyers and the state of Virginia alerted the court Monday that they were in agreement that Malvo’s life term should remain in effect and that he would have a chance at parole beginning in 2024, Fox 5 DC reported.

Can Iran Reduce EU Dependence on Russian Gas?

According to BP statistics, Iran has the world's largest reserves of natural gas and its fourth-largest reserves of oil. Its strategic geographic position makes it capable of supplying these resources to Europe, its Middle Eastern neighbors, and South and East Asian countries.1 Yet, the difficult geopolitical situation around its nuclear program and the poor management of its energy industry have prevented it from becoming a gas exporter to the European Union (EU).

However, the recent Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program and the promising reforms of the Hassan Rouhani administration have created hopes for invigorating Iran's export potential. Iran has not only declared that it plans to take back its share of the world oil market; it has also announced plans to increase its natural-gas exports.2 And as EU-Russian relations deteriorated under the influence of the Ukrainian crisis, Iran is seen as an alternative to Russian gas supplies.

Currently Russia's Gazprom is the largest gas supplier to the European market. After the gas crises of 2006 and 2009, when the supplies that were transported via Ukraine were interrupted, the reliability of Russia as the main exporter to Europe was undermined. At the same time, the European Commission (EC) accuses Gazprom of noncompetitive practices and promotes liberalization of the gas market. Hence, the long-term goal for the EU is to find alternative suppliers and build an internal market, ideally based on the spot-market principle instead of the long-term contracts preferred by Gazprom.

Adidas' China Business Activity Crashes 85% Due To Virus Shock

Under Armour was the first apparel company to warn the Covid-19 outbreak in China would have a negative impact on sales in 1Q. The Baltimore-based apparel company said last week that the industry as a whole would be damaged.

One week later, German sportswear maker Adidas has warned the virus outbreak across China, forcing dozens of cities to close with 400-700 million people in quarantine would severely impact sales in 1Q.

Adidas generates more than a third of its sales in Asia, which has been a significant growth market for the apparel company in the last decade. The region is also home to factories of the company that could still be shuttered.

Adidas expects lower shopping traffic for mainland China, South Korea, Japan, and other Asia Pacific countries, reported Reuters.

It said mainland China sales dropped 85% year-on-year over the Lunar New Year holiday as many of its 12,000 franchise and 500 corporate stores were closed for virus containment purposes. There's no word on the status of the stores until next month.

"The magnitude of the overall impact on our business for the full-year 2020 cannot be quantified reliably at this point in time," it said, adding that additional details of the disruption will be published when it reports 2019 results on March 11.

Adidas said the virus outbreak in China had hurt its other key markets in Asia. The sales slump in 1Q could force the apparel company to revise earnings estimates on the year. It said, "the virus made it difficult to forecast, but it is working under the assumption that the situation will normalize in the short-term."
