Jack Kaye Retires After a Storied Career at NASA

Jack Kaye [NASA HQ—Associate Director for Research, Earth Science Division (ESD)] has decided to retire on April 30, 2025, following 42 years of service to NASA – see Photo 1.

Most recently, Kaye served as associate director for research of the Earth Science Division (ESD) within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD).

In this position, he was responsible for the research and data analysis programs for Earth System Science that addressed the broad spectrum of scientific disciplines from the stratopause to the poles to the oceans.

A New York native, Kaye’s interest in space was piqued as a child watching early NASA manned space launches on television. He would often write to NASA to get pictures of the astronauts.

In high school, he started an after school astronomy club. Despite a youthful interest in Earth science, as he explained in a 2014 “Maniac Talk” at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Kaye pursued a slightly different academic path.

He obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in chemistry from Adelphi University in 1976 and a Ph.D. in theoretical physical chemistry at the California Institute of Technology in 1982.

For his graduate studies, he focused on the quantum mechanics of chemical reactions with an aim toward being able to understand and calculate the activity.

Following graduate school, Kaye secured a post-doctoral position at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, where he studied the chemistry of EarthPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested an illegal alien who allegedly sought to kill President Donald Trump prior to self-deporting to Mexico.

Ramon Morales-Reyes, a Mexican national, was arrested on May 22nd after an ICE field officer received a threatening letter from Morales-Reyes targeting President Trump.

“We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans – we have done more for this country than you white people,” Morales-Reyes reportedly wrote. “You have been deporting my family and I think it is time Donald J. Trump get what he has coming to him.”

“I will self deport myself back to Mexico, but not before I use my 30 yard 6 to shoot your precious president in his head – I will see him at one of his big ralleys,” he continued.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Morales-Reyes’ arrest on Wednesday, calling on politicians and the media to “tone down their rhetoric.”

DP World To Invest $760m in Dominican Republic Port of Caucedo

Dubai-based DP World, a major international logistics company, has announced the launch of a Free Trade Zone in the Dominican Republic. A $760m investment will expand capacity at the Port of Caucedo from 2.5m TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to 3.1m. The Free Trade Zone will expand onto 225 hectares of thus-far undeveloped land.

The expansion aims to attract $3.9b in foreign direct investment to establish the Dominican Republic as a regional nearshoring and trade hub.

The Port of Caucedo sits around 1,100 nautical miles from Miami.

“By boosting capacity and enabling nearshoring opportunities, we will transform Caucedo into the most advanced logistics hub in the Caribbean, not only strengthening supply chain resilience across the Americas but also creating a powerful engine for economic growth and job creation in the Dominican Republic,” says Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and Group CEO of DP World.

The $760m investment will be used in equal shares for the expansion of port infrastructure and development of the FTZ. Port facilities will be expanded to accommodate the largest types of vessels. In the trade zone basic infrastructure like roads and utilities will accompany commercial and marketing centers to attract logistics tenants.

“With its proximity to U.S. markets and duty-free access, the Dominican Republic offers a compelling environment for manufacturers and logistics providers, with competitive costs and robust tax incentives. DELIVERING MOST-FAVORED-NATION PRESCRIPTION DRUG PRICING TO AMERICAN PATIENTS

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Purpose. The United States has less than five percent of the world’s population and yet funds around three quarters of global pharmaceutical profits. This egregious imbalance is orchestrated through a purposeful scheme in which drug manufacturers deeply discount their products to access foreign markets, and subsidize that decrease through enormously high prices in the United States.

The United States has for too long turned its back on Americans, who unwittingly sponsor both drug manufacturers and other countries. These entities today rely on price markups on American consumers, generous public subsidies for research and development primarily through the National Institutes of Health, and robust public financing of prescription drug consumption through Federal and State healthcare programs. Drug manufacturers, rather than seeking to equalize evident price discrimination, agree to other countries’ demands for low prices, and simultaneously fight against the ability for public and private payers in the United States to negotiate the best prices for patients. The inflated prices in the United States fuel global innovation while foreign health systems get a free ride.

This abuse of Americans’ generosity, who deserve low-cost pharmaceuticals on the same terms as other developed nations, must end. Americans will no longer be forced to pay almost three times more for the exact same medicines, often made in the exact same factories. As the largest purchaser of pharmaceuticals, Americans should get the best deal.

NASA’s coverage of the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse has earned two nominations for the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominations on May 1, recognizing NASA’s outstanding work in sharing this rare celestial event with audiences around the world.

The winners are set to be unveiled at a ceremony in late June.

“Total solar eclipses demonstrate the special connection between our Earth, Moon, and Sun by impacting our senses during the breathtaking moments of total alignment that only occur at this time on Earth,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for science at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

NASA Telescopes Tune Into a Black Hole Prelude, Fugue

NASA released three new pieces of cosmic sound Thursday that are associated with the densest and darkest members of our universe: black holes.

These scientific productions are sonifications — or translations into sound — of data collected by NASA telescopes in space including the Chandra X-ray Observatory, James Webb Space Telescope, and Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE).

This new trio of sonifications represents different aspects of black holes. Black holes are neither static nor monolithic. They evolve over time, and are found in a range of sizes and environments.

WR 124

The first movement is a prelude to the potential birth of a black hole. WR124 is an extremely bright, short-lived massive star known as a Wolf-Rayet at a distance of about 28,000 light-years from Earth.

These stars fling their outer layers out into space, creating spectacular arrangements seen in an image in infrared light from the Webb telescope. In the sonification of WR124, this nebula is heard as flutes and the background stars as bells.

At the center of WR124, where the scan begins before moving outward, is a hot core of the star that may explode as a supernova and potentially collapse and leave behind a black hole in its wake.

As the scan moves from the center outward, X-ray sources detected by Chandra are translated into harp sounds.

Data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is heard as metallic bell-like sounds, while the light of the central star is mapped to produce the descending scream-like sound at the beginning.

Daycare Closed After Housing Illegal Migrant Wanted for Child Rape

A daycare in Cape Cod closed this week after housing an illegal migrant wanted for child rape in his home country of Brazil.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that agents arrested Tiago Lucas in Bourne, Massachusetts last October after learning he had been living at the home daycare of Franciele Nunes. Lucas, allegedly the father of Nunes two children, fled Brazil to escape a nine-year sentence for raping a 13-year-old girl. Nunes had been a licensed home daycare provider for three years until her license expired in March of this year.

Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis called it “terrifying” that Lucas had been harbored at a home daycare with no oversight.

Sheriff Evangelidis told 25 Investigaters:

The idea that someone has been documented, that a Brazilian national fled the country because they were convicted for rape of a 13-year-old and could come to Massachusetts and not only disappear into the fabric of Massachusetts, but actually be living in a home that was a daycare center for young people. That’s terrifying.

According to Boston 25, the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) investigated the home five times and found no record of Tiago Lucas living there. State Representative Steven Xiarhos said the investigations were not thorough enough.

“You’ve really got to, I think, go out of your way to make sure each place is as safe as it should be. Within the report, Director John Ratcliffe is noted as shifting the focus of America’s leading spy agency to use more “human intelligence.”That phrase, “human intelligence,” is IC silo code speak for shifting away from “analysts” (political operatives) and engaging in more ¹factual intelligence information.
