Self-imaging of structured light in cylindrical systems unveils a new form of space-time duality

Photonics researchers from Tampere University, Finland, and Kastler-Brossel Laboratory, France, have demonstrated how self-imaging of light, a phenomenon known for nearly two centuries, can be applied to cylindrical systems, facilitating unprecedented control of light's structure with great potential for advanced optical communication systems.

In addition, a new type of space-time duality was explored for powerful analogies bridging different fields of optics.

In 1836, Henry F. Talbot performed an experiment, where he observed light patterns that naturally reappear after some propagation without the use of any lenses or imaging optics—a self-imaging phenomenon nowadays of then termed the Talbot effect.

Recently, researchers interested in sculpting light from the Experimental Quantum Optics Group (EQO) in Tampere University, as well as the Complex Media Optics group at Kastler Brossel Laboratory, in Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, have teamed up and investigated the self-imaging Talbot effect in cylindrical systems in greater depth than ever before.

The presented interesting fundamental physics and powerful applications in optical communications have now been published in the journal Nature Photonics.

Exploring the effect of self-imaging in cylindrical geometries

Light traveling in a so-called ring-core fiber experiences a self-imaging process, albeit in an angular position.

"As light enters the fiber at a specific angular position of the ring-like fiber core, it first spreads around the entire cylindrical core and then perfectly recombines to form the original field via the self-imaging process," explains Doctoral researcher Matias Eriksson, one of the leading authors of the study.

Importantly, this self-imaging in angular positions is only half of the fundamental phenomenon in cylindrical geometries.

A similar interference effect also appears in a closely related property of light known as orbital angular momentum, which allows light to rotate particles around the optical axis, i.e., make them orbit on a ring-like path.

Fundamentally, both properties, angular position and orbital angular momentum, are considered complementary variables, which means that the precise definition of one leads to imprecision of the other property.

The team now combines the self-imaging in angle and orbital angular momentum for the first time in a single experiment, for unprecedented control of the light's spatial structure.

But the study doesn't stop there, the researchers also explore the intriguing connection to the time domain and demonstrate a powerful application for optical communication.

Bridging two popular fields in optics

A fundamental idea in optics is the so-called space-time duality, which suggests that many effects that are observed spatially can also be seen in the light's temporal structure.

Based on this principle, the generalized self-imaging in time occurs for a periodic train of optical pulses and its corresponding frequency comb, i.e., light containing only well-defined and equally spaced frequencies.

In their work, the researchers unveil a new form of space-time duality by showing the strong link between angle/angular momentum and time/frequency.

"This means that the physical phenomena observed in these two fields are broadly connected, and the processing techniques from one may be used for the other," explains the other leading author Jianqi Hu, who was a postdoc fellow at Kastler Brossel Laboratory and is currently a researcher at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland.

Fundamental effect triggers application in optical communication

Benefiting from this deeper fundamental insight into self-imaging and its accompanying advanced modulation capabilities, the researchers additionally demonstrate a powerful application for optical communication.

"The generalized self-imaging effect can be cleverly tuned to encode, convert, and decode information in the light's orbital angular momentum values such that they can act as independent communication channels," says Eriksson.

As such, the current study shows that the theoretical promise of a loss-less and crosstalk-free operation for a vastly increased data rate is within reach, which could have a profound impact on the future of optical telecommunications.

The Ring of Fire is a massive planned chromite mining and smelting development project in the James Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario (Gov. of Ontario, n.d.). Chromite is used in making stainless steel. This region holds one of the world's richest chromite deposits as well as nickel, copper and platinum, which have been variously valued at anywhere from $30 billion to $60 billion (Canadian Press, 2015). It is considered "one of the largest potential mineral reserves in Ontario" with "more than 35 junior and intermediate mining and exploration companies covering an area of about "1.5 million hectares" (Matawa FN, 2013). By 2010, there were more than 30,000 claim units in the 5,000-square-kilometre area (Canadian press, 2010). Development has been delayed for almost a decade by challenges of accessing remote regions and due to demands by First Nations for adequate consultation. Noront Resources plans to open a chromite mine and send ore to a smelter either in Timmins or Sault Ste. Marie for processing. A ferrochrome facility would process chromite from the Ring of Fire. The company at one time was also considering Coniston as the potential location for its chromite smelter, but earlier this year narrowed its list to the Sault and Timmins.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman has barred all Space Force personnel from participating in any events sponsored by the Mitchell Institute, pending further instructions.

The ban was conveyed to Space Force and US Space Command leaders in a Thursday evening email blast signed by Maj. Gen. Steven Whitney, Space Force staff director.

“CSO has directed that all Guardian participation with the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies is stopped until further notice. Instructions will follow when he clears future participation.

This does not affect participation at the AFA’s Warfare Symposium, only Mitchell Institute sponsored events,” the email states. “I ask that you disseminate this guidance to your teams.”

The email does not list a reason for the decision. However, it follows hard on the heels of the Feb. 19 release of a new Mitchell report calling on the Defense Department to more clearly define the Space Force’s role in warfighting.

The report, which was based on a workshop attended by Guardians, also found that Saltzman’s overarching theory of space power, dubbed “Competitive Endurance,” gives the impression of being weighed toward defensive operations rather than offensive actions — and that there continues to be some hesitancy within the Guardian corps about warfighting in space.

A spokesperson for the Space Force was unable to respond by press time.

While maintaining 501c3 status as an independent think tank, Mitchell traditionally has advocated for the importance of US military air power and the US Air Force, and increasingly in recent years for space power and the Space Force.

Indeed, it was named for Army Brig. Gen. William Mitchell, who according to the organization’s website, “was a visionary of early airpower and the importance it would play in post-world-war global security and future wars.”

In response to a request for comment from Breaking Defense, retired Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula, Mitchell Institute dean, said that Saltzman “is dedicated to infusing a warfighting attitude in the Space Force.”

Nonetheless, he said, “for decades, military personnel were prohibited from saying ‘warfighting’ and ‘space’ in the same sentence. Circumstances are far different now given adversary actions.

The Space Force leadership knows this and is pressing hard to evolve the service.

“Mitchell Institute will continue to advocate for the Space Force, and the absolute need to increase their resources, personnel, and authorities that are all essential to realize ‘peace through strength’ for our nation,” he added.

‘A lot of problems’ for Kiev without minerals deal – Trump

The US president has demanded access to Ukraine’s rare earths, although Vladimir Zelensky has reportedly refused to sign a deal

Ukraine will face “a lot of problems” if it doesn’t agree to sign over the rights to a large chunk of its natural resources to the US, President Donald Trump has warned.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky first floated the idea of granting Washington access to his country’s rare-earth minerals back in October. Earlier this month, Trump said he would pursue a deal and demanded the “equivalent of $500 billion” worth of natural resources, as compensation for aid provided to Ukraine throughout its conflict with Russia.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump stated that “we’re going to either sign a deal or there’s gonna be a lot of problems with [Ukraine].” The US president added that an agreement would “hopefully [take place] in the next fairly short period of time,” with Washington receiving “four or five hundred billion dollars back.”

Trump criticized his predecessor, Joe Biden, over US aid to Ukraine, saying he “just gave them money…We’re spending our treasure on… a country that’s very, very far away.” In contrast, Trump claimed European countries would be reimbursed for their aid to Kiev as it is “in the form of a loan.”

According to The Economist, citing anonymous sources, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave Zelensky just one hour to agree to a proposal during a visit to Kiev last week. The Ukrainian leader declined to sign the agreement.

At the Munich Security Conference last weekend, Zelensky told journalists he was seeking a “connection between some kind of security guarantees and some kind of investment.”

The Associated Press quoted an unnamed official as describing the agreement in its current form as “colonial.”

On Monday, White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes accused Zelensky of being “short-sighted about the excellent opportunity the Trump administration has presented to Ukraine.”

Amid the back-and-forth, a senior Ukrainian lawmaker claimed on Thursday that the US had halted weapons sales to Kiev.

On Saturday, Reuters cited anonymous sources as alleging that the US has also threatened to block the Ukrainian military’s access to Elon Musk’s Starlink internet terminals if it continues to dig its heels in on a minerals deal.

According to the 2024 World Economic Forum report, Ukraine “holds immense potential as a major global supplier of critical raw materials”that could be “essential” for defense, the technology sector, and green energy. Much of those resources are, however, located in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which joined Russia in 2022.

The governor of Maine’s chief of staff publicly melted down and cursed at a White House official on Saturday over the state’s dispute with the White House on men in women’s sports, a senior White House official told The Daily Wire on Saturday.

The incident allegedly occurred as Alex Meyer, the White House Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, spoke with a group of gubernatorial chiefs of staff on Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., the senior White House official said. SpaceX is targeting Saturday, February 22 for a Falcon 9 launch of 22 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Liftoff is targeted for 3:43 p.m. PT, with backup opportunities available until 5:10 p.m. PT. If needed, additional launch opportunities are also available on Sunday, February 23 starting 2:10 p.m. PT.

A live webcast of this mission will begin about five minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the new X TV app.

This is the 11th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched USSF-62, OneWeb Launch 20, and eight Starlink missions.

Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which will be stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

There is the possibility that residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the launch, but what residents experience will depend on weather and other conditions.

Seventy Christians were found dead in a church in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) last week — reportedly beheaded at the hands of radical Islamic terrorists.

Christian group Open Doors, which supports persecuted Christians around the world, said that terrorists from the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has ties to the Islamic State, surrounded a village in Mayba in the territory of Lubero last Thursday, taking 20 men and women captive. The Islamic terrorists later returned and kidnapped 50 more Christians in the village and took them to a Protestant church in Kasanga, where they were brutally killed.

Open Doors said that, according to “field sources,” families were still waiting to bury their dead loved ones as of Tuesday while many Christians fled the area for safety.

“We don’t know what to do or how to pray; we’ve had enough of massacres,” said an elder of the CECA20 church in DRC. “May God’s will alone be done.”

As of Thursday afternoon, the massacre of Christians in DRC has received no coverage in the legacy media. Tristan Azbej, the Hungarian State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians, acknowledged the mass killing of Christians in DRC and urged world leaders to “recognize and act against Christian persecution.”

Multiple people were injured in a shooting at a hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, according to law enforcement sources briefed on the matter.

Officials believe at least two law enforcement officers and a nurse have sustained gunshot wounds. It is unclear how many people were injured in the shooting.

The shooter has been neutralized, ABC Harrisburg affiliate WHTM reported.

Law enforcement agencies continue responding to the area.

US Army General Petraeus hails Ukraine's drone innovations as miracle in warfare

Ukraine is at the forefront of developing advanced military technologies, particularly in the realm of drone warfare, General David Petraeus, former commander of U.S. Central Command and ex-CIA Director said at the Kyiv Security Forum on Feb. 21.

According to him, "Ukraine is leading the transformation of the war," while the Russians are repeating Ukraine's progress.

"They are very good at electronic warfare, jamming, air defense, etc.," said Petraeus.

“But Ukraine continues to develop advanced technologies that are literally not used anywhere else in the world, and this is the future of war.”

Ukraine's development in the field of technology allows it to limit Russia's gains at the front every day.

It was thanks to Ukrainian developments that the Defense Forces sank one third of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and forced the enemy ships to leave Sevastopol, the general added.

Petraeus is confident that Ukraine will continue to make steady progress with drones, which are used to destroy manpower and equipment of Russian troops.

Currently, the aggressor state cannot even use its tanks near the contact line because they are quickly eliminated by Ukrainian drones.

"The drones are literally fighting infantrymen who are advancing a block or two a day," the U.S. Army general said.

“I wish they didn't make even that much progress every day. But, in the end, what Ukraine has done in these circumstances is nothing short of a miracle.”

On Jan. 3, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine plans to produce at least 30,000 long-range drones and about 3,000 cruise missiles and drone missiles in 2025.

Later, The Wall Street Journal reported that 2025 should be marked by the appearance of "killer robots" on the battlefields of the Russo-Ukrainian war as computers increasingly assume the roles of UAV operators.

‘’Mystery’’ drone crashes in Kurdistan’s Duhok

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, an unidentified drone crashed into a residential home in north of Duhok, Kurdistan Region.

"The drone fell on a civilian home, resulting in material damage but no injuries or fatalities," a security source confirmed to Shafaq News.

The incident is the first of its kind in Deraluk, though similar drone crashes have been reported in other parts of the al-Amadiya district, where civilian homes have also been affected.

The Region has been the site of ongoing clashes between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish military. In April 2021, Turkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock, targeting PKK strongholds in Iraqi Kurdistan, particularly in Gara, Hakurk, and Metina.

Turkiye, the United States, and the European Union classify the PKK as a terrorist organization.
