Washington, D.C., August 14, 2011 — I don’t often agree with former CIA director James Woolsey. In fact, I can’t think of a time that I have ever agreed with him.

Until this week, that is, when Woolsey offered a short, sharp elbow to the policy ribs of the smart grid during an appearance on Energy Now, a weekly TV energy-related news show (financed by gas company Chesapeake Energy).

In a 1-minute segment on the show, Woolsey said, “they’re constructing a smart grid that will make it easier for you or me to all our homes on our cell phones and turn down our air conditioner on a hot afternoon. But that may well mean that a hacker in Shanghai can do the same thing with his cell phone, or worse. A so-called smart grid that’s as vulnerable as what we’ve got is not smart at all. It’s a really, really stupid grid.”

Woolsey said a key part of the problem is that no one is in charge. “You can search forever through the federal code to find who that person might be,” he said. Woolsey suggested that the proper federal official to regulate grid security is the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He added that it would be a good idea for the Pentagon to work with local utilities on beefing up the security weaknesses of the grid.

The pointed remarks from the former CIA chief drew praise from Consumer Reports. The publication of Consumers Union said it “has also expressed concerns about the smart grid, though our issues stem from the fact that it is not clear whether consumers will reap any real savings, or whether utility companies will come out ahead.” Consumers Union was one of five consumer groups that last August issued a 28-page report detailing their objections to current trends in smart grid policy and development. Also joining Consumers Union were the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates, AARP, National Consumer Law Center, and Public Citizen.

The consumer groups’ report raised several complaints about the current approach to the smart grid, including cyber security. The report said, “While utilities typically assure regulators and policymakers that their new Smart Grid systems will meet all required standards, more work is needed to examine the resources, skills, and investments necessary to actually implement those standards, monitor systems, and spot potentially dangerous intrusions and attempts to infiltrate the utility’s data systems through the new meters.”

Some people might not be familiar with the verb "to dissemble", but we all need to become familiar with it, because there is a lot of dissembling going on.

It basically means to deliberately conceal something or obfuscate it, so that one's attention is misdirected or deflected from whatever the Dissembler wishes to obscure. Like the truth. In fact dwarf galaxy IC 2574 shows clear evidence of intense star forming activity in its telltale reddish regions of glowing hydrogen gas. Just as in spiral galaxies, the turbulent star-forming regions in IC 2574 are churned by stellar winds and supernova explosions spewing material into the galaxy's interstellar medium and triggering further star formation. A mere 12 million light-years distant, IC 2574 is part of the M81 group of galaxies, seen toward the northern constellation Ursa Major. Also known as Coddington's Nebula, the lovely island universe is about 50,000 light-years across, discovered by American astronomer Edwin Coddington in 1898.

More Than 400 Lives Saved with NASA’s Search and Rescue Tech in 2024

Did you know that the same search and rescue technologies developed by NASA for astronaut missions to space help locate and rescue people across the United States and around the world?

NASA’s collaboration with the international satellite-aided search and rescue effort known as Cospas-Sarsat has enabled the development of multiple emergency location beacons for explorers on land, sea, and air.

Of the 407 lives saved in 2024 through search and rescue efforts in the United States, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) reports that 52 rescues were the result of activated personal locator beacons, 314 from emergency position-indicating radio beacons, and 41 from emergency locator transmitters.

Since 1982, more than 50,000 lives have been saved across the world.

Using GPS satellites, these beacons transmit their location to the Cospas-Sarsat network once activated. The beacons then provide the activation coordinates to the network, allowing first responders to rescue lost or distressed explorers.

The Search and Rescue Office, part of NASA’s SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Program, has assisted in search and rescue services since its formation in 1979 Now, the office is building on their long legacy of Earth-based beacon development to support crewed missions to space.

The beacons also are used for emergency location, if needed, as part of NASA’s crew launches to and from the International Space Station, and will support NASA’s Artemis campaign crew recovery preparations during future missions returning from deep space.

Systems being tested, like the ANGEL (Advanced Next-Generation Emergency Locator) beacon, are benefitting life on Earth and missions to the Moon and Mars.

Most recently, NASA partnered with the Department of Defense to practice Artemis II recovery procedures – including ANGEL beacon activation – during URT-11 (Underway Recovery Test 11).

But after he arises his kingdom will be broken. At the zenith of his success, Alexander died suddenly at a young age.6

It will be divided to the four directions of the heavens—but not to his posterity. Alexander’s vast kingdom was divided among his four generals instead of being inherited by his children.7

3. He Attributed His Success to the High Priest

As Alexander approached Jerusalem, the High Priest Shimon HaTzaddik (Simeon the Just) donned the priestly garments and went to greet him, accompanied by a delegation of Jewish dignitaries bearing torches. When Alexander saw Shimon HaTzaddik, he descended from his chariot and bowed before him.

When the members of his entourage questioned this uncharacteristic display of respect, Alexander explained: “I did this because the image of this man’s face appears before me and leads me to victory when I am on the battlefields.”8

4. He Wanted to Have His Likeness in the Holy Temple

Shimon HaTzaddik then took Alexander the Great on a tour of the Holy Temple. Impressed at what he saw, Alexander wished to donate gold to have an image of himself placed in the Holy Temple. Shimon demurred, saying that it was forbidden for the Jews to have graven images. Instead, he suggested that he give the gold to the poor.9

5. The Priests Named Their Sons After Him

Shimon HaTzaddik further suggested that instead of erecting a statue in Alexander’s likeness, there was a better way to memorialize the occasion: all male priests born that year would be named “Alexander.”10 Thus, Alexander forever became a Jewish name, still in common use today.

6. He Engaged in Discussion With Jewish Scholars

The Talmud relates that Alexander presented 10 questions before a group of Jewish scholars known as “the elders of the south.” Among them were queries as to the order in which G‑d created the world; who is truly considered wise, strong, and wealthy; what one should do to become well-liked by others; and why Jews do not accept other religions.11

One way of understanding the conversation was that Alexander wanted these scholars to admire his tremendous power and wealth, while the Jews contended that true greatness comes from serving G‑d.12

7. Talmudic Sources Describe His Exploits

Several incidents involving Alexander the Great’s exploits in distant lands are recorded in the Talmud and Midrash. In one account, Alexander is impressed at the benevolent method of judgment carried out by the king of a region called Katzia, in stark contrast to the way he would have decided the case himself.13

Another narrative tells how Alexander discovered the entrance to the Garden of Eden, only to be barred entry.14 The Maharal, Rabbi Yehuda Loew of Prague, presents a metaphorical understanding of this story: Despite Alexander’s tremendous knowledge15 and the powers he was granted from Above, he was unable to reach the spiritual heights attained by the righteous.16

8. He Presided Over a Dispute Between the Jews and Egyptians

Another story recorded in the Talmud involves a monetary claim brought before Alexander’s court. Egyptian representatives demanded that the Jews pay restitution for all the gold and silver they took during the Exodus. Their argument was refuted by a wise Jew named Geviha son of Pesisa, who counterclaimed that it was first necessary to subtract the wages the Egyptians owed the Jews for enslaving them, which far surpassed the riches they took.17

9. Many Jews Lived in Alexandria

The Egyptian city of Alexandria was founded by, and named after, Alexander the Great. Jews lived in Alexandria since ancient times. The Talmud describes the city’s opulent synagogue which could contain many thousands of worshippers who sat according to profession. It was so large that it was impossible for everyone to hear the cantor. One person was thus designated to stand on the bimah (platform) in the center of the column-lined sanctuary and raise a handkerchief whenever it was time to say “amen.”18

Jews continued to reside in the city throughout the centuries, until the mass emigration of Egyptian Jewry in the 1940s and ‘50s.

10. His Death Set the Stage for Chanukah

After Alexander’s death at the age of 33, his vast kingdom was split between four of his generals, progenitors of the Ptolemaic, Antigonid, Antipatrid, and Seleucid dynasties. Of these four, the land of Israel fell within the territory of the Seleucid (or Syrian-Greek) Empire. Over a century later, the ruler of the Seleucid Empire was Antiochus IV Epiphanes, whose struggles against his Ptolemaic counterparts and tyrannical decrees resulted in the Maccabean revolt and the Hanukkah miracle.

11. Legal Documents Dated From His Reign

One of the dating methods used in Jewish legal documents (such as bills of divorce) was known as minyan shtarot, “dating used in documents.” It marked the years that had passed since the reign of Alexander the Great, and was widely in use at least until medieval times.19

NASA Goes Live: First Twitch Stream from Space Station

For the first time, NASA is hosting a live Twitch event from about 250 miles off the Earth aboard the International Space Station, bringing new audiences closer to space than ever before.

Viewers will have the opportunity to hear from NASA astronauts live and ask questions about life in orbit.

The event will begin at 11:45 a.m. EST on Wednesday, Feb. 12, livestreamed on the agency’s official Twitch channel:

Space Navigation Test, Plasma Crystal Research Top Wednesday Science Schedule

Space navigation and plasma crystals were the main research topics aboard the International Space Station on Wednesday.

The Expedition 72 crew also reorganized cargo and continued cleaning up after last week’s spacewalk.

Accurate navigation is critical as crew spacecraft are being readied to travel farther away from Earth-orbiting satellite systems and toward the Moon.

NASA Flight Engineer Don Pettit installed and activated the Navigation and Communication Testbed (NAVCOM) demonstration hardware inside the Columbus laboratory module.

NAVCOM is being tested as a more accurate alternative to a constellation of satellites known as the Global Navigation Satellite System.

NAVCOM may inform the development of lunar stations to transmit precise navigation data such as position and time on future crewed missions to the Moon.

Station Commander Suni Williams of NASA spent most of her day on cargo and life support work in the orbital lab.

She primarily worked inside the Permanent Multipurpose Module reconfiguring the cargo hold to optimize space.

Williams also spent a few moments transferring clean water from the Tranquility module into Roscosmos water tanks for temporary stowage.

Williams later joined NASA Flight Engineers Butch Wilmore and Nick Hague servicing spacesuits and stowing tools used during a Jan. 30 spacewalk.

Following her cargo and maintenance work, Williams wrapped up her shift stowing spacesuit batteries and preparing them for upcoming recharging activities.

Wilmore and Hague worked throughout the day in the Quest airlock stowing a variety of spacewalking tools used during the science and maintenance spacewalk.

Roscosmos Flight Engineer Aleksandr Gorbunov started his day setting up a video monitor for a study observing electrons, ions, neutral gas, and microparticles that interact strongly when charged and can turn into plasma crystals.

Gorbunov also assisted Williams with the water transfer tasks then replaced hardware in the Zvezda service module that purifies water vapor into potable water.

Flight Engineers Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner spent their day on routine maintenance and ongoing science activities inside the orbital outpost’s Roscosmos segment.

Ovchinin completed carbon dioxide monitoring near crew work areas and crew quarters then worked on Zvezda’s oxygen generator.

Vagner participated in a test to improve how international crews communicate with mission controllers from around the world.
