DOJ Launches Criminal Probe into NYC Hotels Used as Migrant Shelters

Two hotels used as migrant shelters in New York City are now under criminal investigation, the news coming after Mayor Eric Adams (D) said his city was overflowing with border crossers and illegal aliens.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is now probing funding and operations at the locations that have also received subpoenas, Fox News reported Thursday.

The Roosevelt Hotel was being used as a migrant shelter and intake center, while the Stewart Hotel was being used as a migrant shelter. In addition, the Hotel Chandler also received a subpoena but the location is reportedly only a shelter for the homeless.

The Fox article said the subpoenas mention an alleged violation of federal immigration law. According to CBS New York, about 170,000 migrants have been processed via the Roosevelt Hotel since 2023.

The outlet said officials are reportedly asking for the names and birth dates of migrants connected to the locations:

In regard to the Roosevelt Hotel, the Fox article said, “According to reports, New York City agreed to pay up to $220 million to the hotel, which is owned by the government of Pakistan. The deal was reportedly part of a $1.1 billion IMF [International Monetary Fund] bailout package to help Pakistan avoid defaulting on their international debt, according to former investment banker and author John LeFevre.”

In January 2024, Adams said his city was out of room as over 160,000 border crossers and illegal aliens had arrived since early 2022, according to Breitbart News.

More recently, the Elon-Musk lead Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) found a $59 million FEMA payment to house illegals in “luxury hotels in New York City,” Musk announced, according to Breitbart News.

“The payment comes after the Biden administration had claimed FEMA was not using funds to support illegal aliens. ‘It’s just categorically false. It is not true,’ former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters in October,” the report said.

Not long after Musk’s announcement, Adams said in late February that the Roosevelt Hotel would be shut down over the next several months.

“The services provided by the Roosevelt Hotel will be meted out to other facilities and the hotel is one of 53 shelters to be shuttered by June, the Adams administration says,” per Breitbart News.

The US Treasury allowed a 60-day waiver for energy-related financial transactions with sanctioned Russian banks to expire on Wednesday, according to multiple news outlets citing officials.

Originally issued by the administration of President Joe Biden on January 10, General License No. 8L provided 12 major Russian financial institutions, including the country’s central bank, limited access to US payment infrastructure.

The grace period was meant to give time to clear remaining transactions as the outgoing government imposed stricter sanctions on Russian oil trade. The escalation of sanctions was reportedly coordinated with Donald Trump’s transition team before he became president, aiming to strengthen his position in negotiations with Moscow.

Upon taking office, Trump initiated talks aimed at normalizing relations with Russia. However, he has also warned of imposing additional sanctions if Moscow is unwilling to compromise regarding the Ukraine conflict.

The Trump administration “remains focused on ending the fighting and fostering negotiations to resolve the war,” an emailed statement from a Treasury spokesperson, quoted by Reuters on Friday, asserted. “We continue to implement our sanctions, which remain one of the levers to facilitate these goals.”

Kiev’s latest attack comes after a US envoy’s visit to discuss ceasefire talks proposed by Washington

Moscow has repelled another Ukrainian drone attack, just days after the Russian capital was targeted in a major multi-wave raid involving over 90 UAVs that killed three civilians, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

The attack on Friday morning comes just hours after US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, departed from Moscow. Witkoff reportedly met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday night to discuss the results of US-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia and relay Moscow’s position back to Washington.

“The Russian air defense forces have repelled the attack of four drones flying toward Moscow,” Sobyanin wrote on Telegram shortly after 7am local time, adding that emergency services were working at the crash sites.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport has suspended operations in response to the drone raid.

On Tuesday morning, Kiev launched a major multi-wave assault on several Russian regions, with Russian air defenses neutralizing a total of 337 drones, including 91 over Moscow Region. The attack killed three civilians and injured a number of others.

Just hours later, representatives from the US and Ukraine held talks in Saudi Arabia, where they issued a joint statement offering Moscow a 30-day ceasefire.

Putin expressed support for a potential ceasefire, but raised concerns regarding how it could be implemented. Speaking on Thursday, Putin warned of potential loopholes and strategic disadvantages.

“These 30 days – how will they be used? To continue forced mobilization in Ukraine? To receive more arms supplies? To train newly mobilized units?” Putin said. Enforcing a ceasefire over the vast battlefield will be difficult, he added, and violations could easily be disputed, leading to a blame game between both sides.

Kiev failed to both prevent the tragedy and to properly investigate it, the court has ruled

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that the Ukrainian authorities were responsible for the deaths of 42 anti-coup activists in the city of Odessa in 2014. They lost their lives when Ukrainian nationalists, who supported the armed takeover in Kiev weeks earlier, torched the port city’s Trade Unions House where the protesters had gathered.

“The Court concluded that the relevant authorities had not done everything they reasonably could to prevent the violence, to stop that violence after its outbreak, and to ensure timely rescue measures for those trapped in the fire in the Trade Union Building,” the ECHR said in its decision published on Thursday.

More than a decade later, Kiev has not named or prosecuted any of the perpetrators. Instead, it pinned the blame on Moscow, claiming that the events in Odessa were “a pre-planned and well-financed operation” by the Russian security services. Moscow has repeatedly called for an investigation, even a special tribunal on the massacre.

Relatives of 25 victims, as well as three people who had survived the fire, filed complaints against Kiev with the ECHR. The court found the Ukrainian police “had ignored the available intelligence and the relevant warning signs” and failed to make any “meaningful attempt to prevent the clashes” that led to the fire. The ECHR believes that “propaganda from Russia had had its part” in stirring up tensions, but said that does not absolve Kiev of responsibility for the massacre.

The nation’s law enforcement did not make “any real attempt” to prevent the violence or to stop it, or to save those trapped in the burning building. “The deployment of fire engines to the site of the fire had been deliberately delayed for 40 minutes, and the police had not stepped in to help evacuate people,” the decision said, adding that “negligence” of Ukrainian officials “went beyond an error of judgement and carelessness.”

The authorities also did not make “enough effort” to properly secure, collect, and assess all the evidence, according to the court. It noted that a criminal investigation against a pro-Western activist suspected of shooting at anti-Maidan protesters was discontinued four times for “identical” reasons.

The ECHR has ordered Kiev to pay all the applicants varying amounts of compensation and cover their legal costs. According to the Ukrainian media, the claimants are to receive between €12,000 and €17,000 each ($13,028 to $18,456). Ukraine has not commented on the ruling so far.
