Ukrainian drone raid hits Russian residential blocks – officials(PHOTOS/VIDEO)

Two people were injured and dozens evacuated after a UAV strike damaged two buildings in the city of Taganrog

A Ukrainian drone raid damaged residential buildings in the southern Russian city of Taganrog late on Tuesday, injuring two civilians and forcing the evacuation of dozens, according to local officials.

The drones sparked fires at a nine-story building and a seven-story block, according to acting Rostov Region Governor Yury Slusar.

“Two people sustained minor injuries, including burns and cuts. They are now being treated,” he said. “Fortunately, there are no fatalities.”

One drone was found lodged in a tree nearresidential buildings, according to Taganrog Mayor Svetlana Kambulova.

Slusar announced a state of emergency in the city – which is 80km from the Ukraine conflict front line – following the attack.

Emergency crews temporarily evacuated 85 residents from one affected building. By Wednesday morning, city officials said residents were allowed to return after specialists determined there was no structural threat and utilities remained intact.

Videos circulating on social media showed the moment of a nighttime explosion meters away from one of the buildings. Another clip depicted a fire in a yard and damaged cars parked nearby. Kabulova released several pictures depicting the building’s damaged facade with shattered windows.

Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of using artillery and drones to strike civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, particularly in areas close to the front line. The recent strikes also come as Russia and the US have engaged in active talks to find a settlement on the Ukraine conflict.

Last month, following a phone call with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a 30-day moratorium on strikes targeting energy infrastructure. Moscow, however, has said that Kiev violated the deal almost immediately. Despite this, Russian officials have signaled that Moscow will abide by the partial ceasefire, arguing that it serves as a signal of improving US-Russia ties.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev,could visit Washington in the near future, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has confirmed.

It was earlier reported in the Western media that Dmitriev, who heads up Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, could travel to the US later this week for talks with President Donald Trump’s negotiator for settling the Ukraine conflict, Steve Witkoff.The meeting will reportedly aim to further “strengthen relations between the two countries as they seek to end the war in Ukraine.”

Asked to confirm the reports, Peskov said on Wednesday that “such a visit is possible,”without offering further details or dates. He added thatMoscow continues to communicate with Washington “through various channels” on both diplomatic issues and the Ukraine conflict.

Dmitriev earlier responded to the reports on his travel plans with a post on X, writing “maybe,”and adding:“What if improved relations are exactly what the world needs for lasting global security and peace?”

The official took part in last month’s Russian-US talks in Saudi Arabia, where both sides agreed to begin normalizing relations. Since then, Moscow and Washington have worked on a potential diplomatic settlement of the Ukraine conflict,reaching limited progress with a partial ceasefire agreement. Russia, however, has accused Ukraine of violating the truce almost immediately, claiming that multiple facilities covered by the agreement were attacked by Ukrainian drones over the past two weeks.

Moscow insists that any settlement of the conflict must address its root causes, including NATO expansion, and would require Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.

Kiev has repeatedly attacked Russia’s energy infrastructure despite the truce being in effect, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said

Ukraine has repeatedly breached the US-brokered partial ceasefire and continued to attack Russian energy infrastructure, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

The top diplomat spoke to reporters on Tuesday,revealing details of an extended meeting of Russia’s Security Council held earlier in the day.During the meeting, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov briefed President Vladimir Putin on the status of the energy ceasefire, Lavrov revealed.

“Belousov said that the moratorium is not being observed, Russian energy facilities have been attacked all this time, perhaps with a break of one or two days, and he listed all the facilities that were targeted by Ukrainian drones over the period, including last night,” the top diplomat said, adding that he offered the president a similar take on the situation around the agreement.

The energy truce was proposed by US President Donald Trump during a phone call with Putin back on March 18. The Russian president agreed to the proposal, immediately ordering a halt to such attacks by Russia. The Russian military said it had to shoot down seven kamikaze drones that were already en route to energy facilities in Ukraine to implement the president’s order.

Last week, Moscow revealed a comprehensive list of energy facilities subject to the truce, which took effect on March 18 and will last for 30 days. The agreement may be prolonged beyond the period should both sides agree.

The facilities covered under the agreement include gas and oil processing and storage facilities, including pumping stations and pipelines, electricity producing and distribution sites, nuclear power plants, and the dams of hydroelectric plants.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky publicly backed the idea of the truce shortly after it was first announced, and appeared to reiterate his commitment to implement it once again last week.While the Ukrainian leader even described it as a diplomatic “victory” for the country, he never publicly mentioned any relevant orders to the Ukrainian military.

“We do not hit their energy. They do not hit our energy. I think there will be a million questions and details, but today it sounds like this: each side does not use the corresponding weaponry against the energy of both sides,” Zelensky said last week.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Kiev of violating the truce, claiming that multiple facilities covered by the deal have been attacked by Ukrainian drones since March 18. Russia has noted that if either party violates the deal, the other can consider itself free from the obligations.

Jupiter and Ring in Infrared from Webb

Why does Jupiter have rings? Jupiter's main ring was discovered in 1979 by NASA's passing Voyager 1 spacecraft, but its origin was then a mystery. Data from NASA's Galileo spacecraft that orbited Jupiter from 1995 to 2003, however, confirmed the hypothesis that this ring was created by meteoroid impacts on small nearby moons. As a small meteoroid strikes tiny Metis, for example, it will bore into the moon, vaporize, and explode dirt and dust off into a Jovian orbit. The featured image of Jupiter in infrared light by the James Webb Space Telescope shows not only Jupiter and its clouds, but this ring as well. Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) in comparatively light color on the right, Jupiter's large moon Europa in the center of diffraction spikes on the left, and Europa's shadow next to the GRS are also visible. Several features in the image are not yet well understood, including the seemingly separated cloud layer on Jupiter's right limb.

Following his dinner with President Donald Trump, Bill Maher is teasing that he's got a lot to say about the experience.

The "Real Time with Bill Maher" host, a longtime critic of the businessman-turned two-term president, took to X Tuesday afternoon to report back on the meeting.

"Hey everybody, thank you for all the interest in my dinner with the president last night – I promise, all will be revealed on the next @RealTimers on April 11," Maher wrote.

He added, "As it’s April 1 today, no one would believe what I said today anyway!"

County rock singer and staunch Trump supporter Kid Rock was responsible for setting up the dinner between the two.

Prior to the meeting, Trump expressed doubts about how the encounter would go in a Sunday night Truth Social post, saying Kid Rock suggested they confer, and "I really didn’t like the idea much, and don’t like it much now, but thought it would be interesting."

He added, "The problem is, no matter how much he likes your Favorite President, ME, he will publicly proclaim what a terrible guy I am, etc., ... Who knows, though, maybe I’ll be proven wrong?

In any event, I’m doing a favor for a friend. I look forward to meeting with Bill Maher, Kid Rock and, I believe, even the Legendary Dana White will be present. It might be fun or, it might not, but you will be the first to know!"

For his part, Rock said Tuesday morning on "Fox & Friends" that "It could not have been better. Everyone was so surprised."

When guest Andrew Schulz asked what Maher planned to wear to the dinner, Maher replied, "I'm not going to dress like (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. It's not going to be a black T-shirt."

World leaders secretly talking to Putin – Vucic

At least two top officials have maintained contact with the Russian leader, the Serbian president has claimed

Several global leadershave secretly maintained contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite the Western campaign to isolate Moscow, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has claimed.

In an interview with talk show host Mario Nawfal on Tuesday,Vucic said that he had not personally met his Russian counterpart since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. “When we agreed upon the fact that it was not done in adherence with international public law, I didn’t see Putin for three years,” he noted.

However, many leaders maintained behind-the-scenes communication, Vucic alleged.“I know at least two big leaders that were speaking secretly to him– because, of course, I still have my friends in the Kremlin and in some other countries as well.”

While Vucic did not name the leaders who supposedly spoke with Putin behind the scenes, hestressed that it was not Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, or Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico,all of whom have not concealed their communication with the Russian president.

Vucic said that he would meet with Putin on May 9 during his visit to Moscow to attend the Victory Day parade marking the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.

The Serbian leader also reminisced about his last meeting with Putinin late 2021, mere weeks before hostilities erupted between Moscow and Kiev. “After I left [Putin’s] office, I said publicly that I expected very difficult times… Nobody believed me,”Vucic said.

He explained that while the Russian leader usually speaks at length about events in the post-Soviet republics,this time the topic was exhausted in 45 seconds. “I knew he had made a decision,” Vucic said.

Nehammer held in-person talks with Putin over the Ukraine conflict in April 2022, later saying it was “not a friendly visit.” Orban came to Russia in July 2024 to further what he referred to as a “peace mission.” Meanwhile, the Putin-Fico talks in December focused on Ukraine’s refusal to extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. The issue had been a major concern for Slovakia, which is highly dependent on Russian energy.

US President Donald Trump has also engaged with Putin in an effort to settle the Ukraine conflict.(so that was before he was reelected. Rt seems to slip in relevant details that may be missed.)

In addition, despite wide-ranging sanctions, Russia has continued to host major diplomatic and economic events, including the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in July and the BRICS Forum in Kazan in October.

NASA Research Examines the Multicellular Behavior of Unique Bacteria

In a recent study, NASA-supported researchers gained new insight into the lives of bacteria that survive by grouping together as if they were a multi-cellular organism.

The organisms in the study are the only bacteria known to do this in this way, and studying them could help astrobiologists explain important steps in the evolution of life on Earth.

The organisms in the study are known as 'multicellular magnetotactic bacteria,' or MMB.

Being magnetotactic means that MMB are part of a select group of bacteria that orient their movement based on Earth's magnetic field using tiny 'compass needles' in their cells.

As if that wasn't special enough, MMB also live bunched up in collections of cells that are considered by some scientists to exhibit ‘obligate’ multicellularity, which is the trait the new study is focused on.

In biology, obligate means that an organism requires something for survival. In this case, it means that single cells of MMB cannot survive on their own.

Instead, cells live as a consortium of multiple cells that behave in many ways like a single multicellular organism.

This requirement to live together means that when MMB reproduce, they do so by replicating all the cells in the consortium at once, doubling the total number of cells.

This large group of cells then splits into two identical consortia.

MMB are the only example of bacteria that are known to live like this. Many other bacteria clump together as simple aggregates of single cells.

For instance, cyanobacteria clump together in colonies and form structures like stromatolites or biofilms that are visible to the naked eye. However, unlike MMB, these cyanobacteria can also survive as single, individual cells.

In the new study, scientists have revealed even more complexity in the relationships between MMB cells. First, contrary to long-held assumptions, individual cells within MMB consortia are not genetically identical, they differ slightly in their genetic blueprint.

Further, cells within a consortium exhibit different and complementary behavior in terms of their metabolism. Each cell in an MMB consortium has a role that contributes to the survival of the entire group.

This behavior is similar to how individual cells within multicellular organisms behave. For example, human bodies are made up of tens of trillions of cells. These cells differentiate into specific cell types with different functions.

Bone cells are not the same as blood cells. Fat cells that store energy are different from the nerve cells that store and transmit information. Each cell has a role to play, and together they make up a single living body.

The evolution of multicellularity is one of the major transitions in the history life on our planet and had profound effects on Earth's biosphere.

In the wake of its appearance, life developed novel strategies for survival that led to entirely new ecosystems.

As the only example of bacteria that exhibit obligate multicellularity, MMB provide an important example of possible mechanisms behind this profound step in life's evolutionary history on Earth.

The study, "Multicellular magnetotactic bacteria are genetically heterogeneous consortia with metabolically differentiated cells," was published in PLOS Biology.

The work was supported through the NASA Exobiology program and the Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) program.

NASA’s SPHEREx Takes First Images, Preps to Study Millions of Galaxies

Processed with rainbow hues to represent a range of infrared wavelengths, the new pictures indicate the astrophysics space observatory is working as expected.

NASA’s SPHEREx (short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) has turned on its detectors for the first time in space.

Initial images from the observatory, which launched March 11, confirm that all systems are working as expected.

Although the new images are uncalibrated and not yet ready to use for science, they give a tantalizing look at SPHEREx’s wide view of the sky.

Each bright spot is a source of light, like a star or galaxy, and each image is expected to contain more than 100,000 detected sources.

There are six images in every SPHEREx exposure — one for each detector. The top three images show the same area of sky as the bottom three images.

This is the observatory’s full field of view, a rectangular area about 20 times wider than the full Moon. When SPHEREx begins routine science operations in late April, it will take approximately 600 exposures every day.

“Our spacecraft has opened its eyes on the universe,” said Olivier Doré, SPHEREx project scientist at Caltech and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, both in Southern California. “It’s performing just as it was designed to.”

The SPHEREx observatory detects infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye.

To make these first images, science team members assigned a visible color to every infrared wavelength captured by the observatory.

Each of the six SPHEREx detectors has 17 unique wavelength bands, for a total of 102 hues in every six-image exposure.

Breaking down color this way can reveal the composition of an object or the distance to a galaxy.

With that data, scientists can study topics ranging from the physics that governed the universe less than a second after its birth to the origins of water in our galaxy.

“This is the high point of spacecraft checkout; it’s the thing we wait for,” said Beth Fabinsky, SPHEREx deputy project manager at JPL. “There’s still work to do, but this is the big payoff. And wow! Just wow!”

During the past two weeks, scientists and engineers at JPL, which manages the mission for NASA, have executed a series of spacecraft checks that show all is well so far.

In addition, SPHEREx’s detectors and other hardware have been cooling down to their final temperature of around minus 350 degrees Fahrenheit (about minus 210 degrees Celsius).

This is necessary because heat can overwhelm the telescope’s ability to detect infrared light, which is sometimes called heat radiation.

The new images also show that the telescope is focused correctly. Focusing is done entirely before launch and cannot be adjusted in space.

“Based on the images we are seeing, we can now say that the instrument team nailed it,” said Jamie Bock, SPHEREx’s principal investigator at Caltech and JPL.

How It Works

Where telescopes like NASA’s Hubble and James Webb space telescopes were designed to target small areas of space in detail, SPHEREx is a survey telescope and takes a broad view.

Combining its results with those of targeted telescopes will give scientists a more robust understanding of our universe.

The observatory will map the entire celestial sky four times during its two-year prime mission.

Using a technique called spectroscopy, SPHEREx will collect the light from hundreds of millions of stars and galaxies in more wavelengths any other all-sky survey telescope.

When light enters SPHEREx’s telescope, it’s directed down two paths that each lead to a row of three detectors.

The observatory’s detectors are like eyes, and set on top of them are color filters, which are like color-tinted glasses.

While a standard color filter blocks all wavelengths but one, like yellow- or rose-tinted glasses, the SPHEREx filters are more like rainbow-tinted glasses: The wavelengths they block change gradually from the top of the filter to the bottom.

“I’m rendered speechless,” said Jim Fanson, SPHEREx project manager at JPL. “There was an incredible human effort to make this possible, and our engineering team did an amazing job getting us to this point.”

The removal seems to be part of a wider effort by the Trump administration to purge what it deems “DEI” (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) content from federal agencies.

In response, the Icelandic Space Agency has pledged to host and translate the comics, ensuring they remain available to a global audience.

Daniel Leeb, Executive Mission Director at Iceland Space Agency, voiced his disapproval of NASA’s decision in a LinkedIn post, condemning the censorship and reaffirming the importance of representation in space exploration.

“The Iceland Space Agency will host and post First Woman issue one and two on our website come Monday morning,” Daniel stated.

“We will also start an initiative to have this translated into Icelandic… and to continue the story.”

Daniel further emphasised, “I hope for my daughters and all the daughters on Earth that we can all begin to use our voices to push back and say clearly: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is not the boogeyman some would have you believe.

California’s Newsom making a play for the middle, calls fellow Dems 'toxic'

As California marks the first birthday of its $20 minimum wage mandate, far-left progressive California Governor Gavin Newsom is talking to the other side.

When California Governor Gavin Newsom launched his “This Is Gavin Newsom” podcast last month, he cited a need to “change the conversation.” He says he is committed to having conversations with people who he disagrees with about things like egg prices, tariffs, and DOGE.

Political analysts and commentators have prognosticated that his attempt to shift center could augur a presidential run in 2028. Floated as a potential to replace former President Joe Biden last summer, Newsom insists he’s not making a play for the highest office in the land.

In what might seem surprising to right-leaning observers, he delivered on the promise to have conversations with the other side of the aisle. On March 6, he hosted Turning Point USA’s founder, Charlie Kirk. On March 10, his guest was conservative commentator Michael Savage and on March 12, he spoke with former White House strategist and “War Room” host, Steve Bannon.

He also hosted former vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and discussed why the Democratic Party is losing male votes and why they believe the party’s platform and message are not resonating with Americans.

The face of progressive policies

Newsom is seen as the face of Golden State progressive polices for controversial laws whose news reached all corners of the country. Assembly Bill 1955 was signed into law last year to ban forced disclosure of students' gender struggles. Framed by its opponents, the first-in-the-nation law prohibits teachers from telling parents if a student is struggling with their gender orientation or identity. This policy is currently being challenged in federal court.

This week also marks the one-year anniversary of the passage of another progressive policy: California’s $20 minimum wage requirement for fast food restaurant employees. Assembly Bill 1228 passed in California and added new sections to the Labor Code, including the $20 minimum wage mandate and also a section establishing a Fast Food Council, which is empowered to make future increases and adopt other employment standards for fast food restaurants. It went into effect last April Fool’s Day, April 1.

The economic repercussions of this law could exacerbate Newsom’s progressive reputation. Speaking to the “Furthermore with Amanda Head” podcast, Director of Research at Employment Policies Institute Rebekah Paxton delved into the damage and said, “this is the crappiest law that has been signed in California so far because the $20 minimum wage stinks for workers, it stinks for business owners and it stinks for consumers.”

Perhaps the harshest result was that the law destroyed 16,000 jobs in one year, according to Paxton. “We know that businesses and restaurants, specifically in California, are strapped. Profit margins are low, and so increasing the minimum wage by 25%…operators had no choice. They had to slash jobs. They had to raise prices just to keep their doors open, to keep some people employed.”

With this latest blast of liberal-on-conservative conversations, Newsom is also putting himself in the guest seat. He appeared on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” where he referred to the Democratic Party as “toxic” and said, “these guys [Republicans] are crushing us.” Newsom and Maher agreed on the fact that Democrats have avoided conversations with the other side, with Maher adding, “you have to. They won.” Newsom, in his movement to the middle, also criticized Democrats for being "more judgmental" and not owning up to "cancel culture."

Steamy liberal-on-liberal action

Fellow Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., redirected the anger towards Trump on X, posting, “With respect, @GavinNewsom the Democratic party is not "toxic." This is not the time to join the chorus in bashing our party. The rage should be about what Trump is doing TODAY. Let's share what our party has done & offer a forward vision for the future.”

Despite his presumed eyes on the Oval Office, California is still experiencing historical population loss under Newsom. According to The Desert Sun, in 2024, almost 240,000 people left California, making it the state with the largest migration loss in the country. Here is a list of the tariffs that are currently expected to take effect on Wednesday:

Auto imports: The president is expected to impose 25% tariffs on all auto imports coming into the United States. But countries that relocate plants to the U.S. or build their cars in the U.S. will be exempted.

Venezuela oil: Trump threatened to impose secondary tariffs of 25% on countries that import oil and gas from Venezuela and trade with the United States, as he seeks to add pressure on the South American country over its response to the U.S. immigration crisis.

Canada and Mexico: The president is expected to impose his 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, which were delayed as part of a United States-Mexico-Canada agreement. The tariffs are in response to the illegal drug crisis happening in the U.S. which sneaks into the U.S. from both countries.

China: Trump is expected to impose a 10%-20% tariff on Chinese imports over the fentanyl and illegal drug crisis.

The tariffs will take effect immediately.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ historic federal corruption case has been tossed — leaving him free to campaign for a second term without the threat of jail hanging over his head.

Judge Dale Ho ordered the case to bedismissed on Wednesday with prejudice,formally killing the criminal case that has hung over Hizzoner’s head for six months.

“To be clear, the Court again emphasizes that it does not express any opinion as to the merits of the case or whether the prosecution of Mayor Adams “should” move forward.,” Ho wrote in the 78-page decision. “The Court notes only that it has no authority to require that it continue.”

He also argued that the mayor could not properly do his job — putting New Yorkers at risk — as the ongoing case left him without a security clearance to get briefed on major threats.

But he didn’t address the merits of the case in his motion, and also urged that the door be left open to possibly revive the prosecution following November’s mayoral election.

The DOJ’s letter ordering federal prosecutors to drop the case sparked an exodus from the department and the Southern District of New York, which brought the case, including the interim head of the prestigious office, Danielle Sassoon, who raised the quid pro quo allegation in a searing resignation letter.

House DOGE subcommittee to hold hearing on reducing federal real estate

The hearing, titled “Federal Foreclosure: Reducing the Federal Real Estate Portfolio," will examine the management of federal real estate and whether it's cost-effective for American taxpayers.

The House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Wednesday it will hold a hearing next week that will focus on reducing federal real estate.

The hearing, titled “Federal Foreclosure: Reducing the Federal Real Estate Portfolio," will examine the management of federal real estate and whether it's cost-effective for American taxpayers. The issue has been on the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) High-Risk List since 2003, according to a news release shared with Just The News.

“The U.S. federal government has been an irresponsible landlord for decades, squandering tens of billions of taxpayer dollars," DOGE Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said in a statement. "It cannot accurately track the properties it owns, including their condition, usage, or financial value, and continues to spend billions annually on vacant buildings."

The congresswoman highlighted how the Biden administration continued to retain its leases on federal buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic, even when government employees were primarily working remotely.

"President Trump and his administration are taking decisive action to end this egregious waste of taxpayer dollars," she continued. "The DOGE Subcommittee will work with this administration to right-size the federal government’s property footprint and ensure it acts as a responsible steward of taxpayer-funded real estate."

The hearing is expected to take place on Tuesday, April 8, at 10 a.m. Eastern. It is expected to include testimony from Open Books CEO John Hart, and David Marroni, the acting director of Physical Infrastructure at the GAO.

Launch of third NASA rocket completes complex aurora mission

The third and final NASA sounding rocket in a mission to better understand how the aurora affects the upper atmosphere launched at 1:33 a.m. Saturday and dispersed white vapor tracers high over central Alaska.

The first two rockets launched from Poker Flat Research Range north of Fairbanks on Tuesday, March 25, with one taking a route similar to Saturday’s rocket and the other flying farther north to eject colorful vapor tracers over the Arctic Ocean above Utqiagvik and Kaktovik.

The mission, titled Auroral Waves Excited by Substorm Onset Magnetic Events, or AWESOME, is led by space physics professor Mark Conde of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute and UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics.

The mission included ground observation sites at Utqiagvik, Kaktovik, Toolik Field Station, Venetie, Eagle and Poker Flat.

Ten UAF graduate and undergraduate students, along with staff and research faculty, operated cameras at the sites.

NASA and some of the nation’s top universities also participated.

“The big picture is that things worked, so it’s very gratifying knowing I should have the data to address the questions that we asked,” Conde said.

“Also very gratifying is that the students working at the six ground observation stations did a fantastic job. They all understood what was required. They understood the equipment and supported the mission flawlessly.”

Aly Mendoza-Hill, program executive for sounding rockets in the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., praised the team and the mission.

“The entire team persevered to make these three successful complex launches happen,” Mendoza-Hill said.

”These launches are a great accomplishment in the effort to continue to research the impact of auroras and potentially improve space weather forecasting.”

Vapor tracers from the third rocket appeared quite different from those of the other two rockets, due to a faulty payload valve. The result was a bright white ring that hung in the sky for a short while early Saturday.

“That ring was spectacular. It was extremely bright and absolutely unmissable,” Conde said.

The payload’s tracer release system consisted of two valves: A main valve to initiate releasing the tracer material and a second one to cycle the release on and off in bursts during both the upward and downward portions of the rocket’s flight path.

However, a faulty control circuit in the payload incorrectly kept the second valve permanently open, which allowed the tracer material to flow from the payload faster than intended.

As a result, it was all released early and only during the upward portion of flight. When the excess material re-entered the atmosphere on the way back down, it formed the glowing ring that was seen from the ground.

Conde will now gather the data from the ion gauges and magnetometers sent skyward by the three rockets and collect images made by the students and staff at the ground stations.

“Then I will have to spend many, many hours going through and analyzing the images that we got and doing the triangulations that turn that into measurements of winds,” he said. “So there is months of work ahead.”

The UAF Geophysical Institute owns Poker Flat, located at Mile 30 Steese Highway, and operates it under a contract with NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, which is part of the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Republicans pad U.S. House majority with two Florida special election wins

The GOP will now hold a 220-213 majority in U.S. House.

Republicans padded their slim U.S. House majority Tuesday after winning two Florida special elections to replace a pair of members who resigned their seats.

In the 6th Congressional District, state Sen. Randy Fine was projected to defeat Democrat Josh Weil with about 56% of the vote with 98% of ballots counted, according to unofficial results. The race was necessitated by the resignation of former U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz, a Republican who became President Donald Trump's national security advisor.

Tuesday's outcome was closer than Waltz's last race, when he won by 34 points.

Florida Republican Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis was the projected winner over Democrat Gay Valimont with 56% of the unofficial vote tally with 93% counted to replace former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz in Florida's 1st Congressional District.

Gaetz resigned his U.S. House seat after being nominated by Trump to be the U.S. attorney general, but he later dropped out of the running because the Republican firebrand and Trump ally faced a tough confirmation vote in the U.S. Senate due to a House ethics investigation.

Trump instead nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was easily confirmed.

With the wins, the GOP will pad their U.S. still slim House majority to 220 seats to 213 for Democrats.

Gas prices in CA nearly $2 above US average due to state policies: Report

Last year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special session of the state legislature to pass new regulations on refineries, citing price gouging.

(The Center Square) — California gas prices are nearly $2 per gallon higher than the national average due to state policies, according to a new study from the University of Southern California.

This new evidence contradicts state leaders’ insistence that “price-gouging” by local fuel producers and distributors is the reason for the state’s chronically high gas prices.

The paper from Michael A. Mische found that “Collectively, the sum of all federal, state, and local taxes and fees, as well as regulatory-mandated costs, total approximately $1.638 a gallon, as of March 10, 2025.”

“Not surprisingly, the average price of retail gasoline in California on March 11, 2025, was $4.694 a gallon, or 52.35% higher per gallon for all formulations than the national average price for gasoline at $3.081,” wrote Mische, confirming that state and local taxes make up for much of the difference between state and national gas prices.

“Based on 30 to 50 years of data, the primary conclusion from this study is that California’s high gasoline prices and supply dilemmas are, by design, engineering or serendipitously, largely self-inflicted, and the result of directed policies and a litany of regulations, taxes, fees, and costs,” concluded Mische. “The economic evidence is abundant; California refiners have not engaged in widespread price gouging, profiteering, price manipulation, 'unexplained residual prices' or surcharges, magical or otherwise.”

Last year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special session of the state legislature to pass new regulations on refineries, citing price gouging. Phillips 66 then announced the closure of its Los Angeles facility, which accounts for 8.57% of the state’s remaining refining capacity. The closure will put further pressure on gas prices.

California gas prices also have an impact on the parts of Nevada and Arizona that rely on California gasoline, meaning the effects of the state’s policies extend beyond the state’s borders.

The Republican governor of Nevada and the Democratic governor of Arizona signed a bipartisan letter urging Newsom not to adopt the new refinery regulations, to no avail. Gas prices in Nevada and Arizona have since spiked due to California refinery closures, highlighting the governors’ concerns.

Last year, California also passed a $162 billion fuel tax to fund credits for “clean” fuels such as electric vehicle charging and hydrogen, with costs expected to be passed on to consumers of “dirty” fuels.

Moment Lady Teacher in US is Arrested for Sexually Assaulting 15-Year-Old Student

Chicago: Chicago police have arrested a high school teacher, Christina Formella, for allegedly raping a 15-year-old student. The arrest, captured on police body camera footage, took place while she was inside her car with a man, believed to be her husband.

Florida man dressed as Ronald McDonald wrestled to the ground by cops: ‘I am a clown, stupid’

Wild bodycam footage shows a Florida man being busted while dressed as Ronald McDonald — telling cops after a scuffle, “I am a clown, stupid.”

Christopher Marlowe, 40, was dressed as the McDonald’s character in a bright yellow, red and white costume and a big red nose as he was wrestled to the ground and arrested for trespassing at a shopping center last week, footage released by Palm Bay Police Department shows.

As he was put in the back of a police cruiser, Marlowe was told by one of the arresting officers: “You look like a clown.”

“No s–t!” the suspect shot back. “I am a clown, stupid.”

Adding to the bizarreness of the arrest, the police department added clown noises to the footage.

Donalds unveils legislation to move NASA headquarters to Florida’s Space Coast

Florida gubernatorial candidate and Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) is set to introduce legislation in the House proposing that NASA headquarters be moved from Washington, D.C. to Florida.

The legislation’s co-sponsors include a bipartisan group of Florida lawmakers, including Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.), Scott Franklin (R-Fla.), Mara Salazar (R-Fla.), Daniel Webster (R-Fla.), Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.), Brian Mast (R-Fla.), Darren Soto (D-Fla.), John Rutherford (R-Fla.), Cory Mills (R-Fla.), and Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.).

The bill, titled Consolidating Aerospace Programs Efficiently at Canaveral Act, is the House version of a Senate bill that was introduced by Florida Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Ashley Moody (R-Fla.).

The bill proposes moving NASA headquarters to Florida’s Space Coast in Brevard County within one year of enactment. The space coast is home to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The Hill was the first outlet to report on the House version of the legislation.

Proponents of moving NASA to Florida point to the existing aerospace infrastructure along the Space Coast.

They also note that Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Spaceforce Stations are primary launch sites for NASA and that having headquarters close by would streamline operations.

Florida’s proximity to the equator also makes it a prime location for launches.

The effort from Florida lawmakers comes as the lease on NASA Headquarters in Washington is set to expire in August of 2028.

However, lawmakers from the Sunshine State are not the only ones pushing to relocate NASA to their home state.

Last month, a group of Ohio lawmakers sent a letter to Vice President JD Vance, who is from Ohio, and President Trump’s pick to lead NASA Jared Isaacman, advocating to move the agency’s headquarters to Cleveland.

The letter was signed by Ohio GOP Reps. Max Miller, Troy Balderson, Mike Carey, Warren Davidson, Jim Jordan, Dave Joyce, Bob Latta, Michael Rulli, Dave Taylor and Mike Turner as well as Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

Ohio Sens. Bernie Moreno (R) and Jon Husted (R) also signed the letter.

SOUTH CAROLINA (WLOS) – Officials with the South Carolina Forestry Commission have arrested three teenagers in connection with the Table Rock Fire, which has now spread to nearly 14,000 acres.

The three teens were charged with one count each of negligently allowing fire to spread to lands or property of another. Their names are as follows:

Nyzaire Jah-Neiz Marsh, 19, of Taylors, S.C.

Tristan Tyler, 18, of Greenville, S.C.

Isaac Wilson, 18, of Greenville, S.C.

The Table Rock Fire was discovered by South Carolina sheriff's deputies, state park workers and first responders on March 21 in Table Rock State Park while they were searching for a missing hiker. The search group then evacuated seven hikers, some of which were questioned about the fire.

Interviews with South Carolina law enforcement led to four subjects, including three adults and one minor, being questioned further. Investigators from the South Carolina Forestry Commission and Pickens County Sheriff's Office then gathered evidence that allegedly identified Marsh, Tyler and Wilson as suspects in starting the fire.

This is the heartwarming moment a NASA astronaut who spent 288 days stranded in space was finally reunited with her pet dogs.

Sunita Williams and her crewmate, Butch Wilmore, returned to Earth on March 18 after spending over nine months stuck on the International Space Station.

Following a medical assessment Mrs Williams was finally allowed to return to her home in Needham, Massachusetts, this week where she shared her heartwarming reunion with her two pet dogs on social media.

In the video, shared on X formerly Twitter, the astronaut can be seen with her dogs on the front lawn of her house.

The excitable labradors can be seen wagging their tails and jumping up and down before Mrs Williams' chocolate labrador has a rather unusual response to the return of his owner.

Mrs Williams keeps saying 'hello and whose here' to her pet pooches which her younger yellow labrador responds to gleefully by running back and forth to her.

However, the older labrador soon loses interest in Mrs Williams and instead seems more interested in a big stick he has acquired.

The canine then starts to strut along the front lawn as Mrs Williams accuses him of 'showing off'.

Despite her attempts to get the dogs attention, he remains disinterested in the owner he hasn't seen in over 200 days.

Mrs Williams eventually acknowledges that her beloved pooch is giving her 'the cold shoulder'.

She is not deprived of affection though as Mrs Williams' yellow labrador continues to lick her face and wag his tail.

When Mrs Williams travelled up to the ISS in June last year she was expecting to be back home with her dogs in a little over a week later.

However, technical issues with the Boeing Starliner - which sent Mrs Williams and Mr Wilmore into space, meant they were stranded in space for 288 days.

The pair were finally brought back to earth last month on a SpaceX shuttle.

Their gaunt appearances when they emerge from the capsule following their prolonged stay in space sparked concern from health expert.

However, in a recent interview with American broadcaster they both looked much better.

Mrs Williams was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998.

She had already been a member of two space expeditions in 2006 and 2012 - spending 322 days on the ISS before the Crew-9 mission.

Before heading into space, the 59-year-old graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1987 and retired from the service at the rank of captain.

While in the Navy, Mrs Williams was a test pilot and helped certify new systems for aircraft. She logged more than 3,000 flight hours in over 30 different aircraft.

During her distinguished career, she received several honors, including the Legion of Merit, the Navy Commendation Medal twice, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

In 2007, ran Ms Williams ran the first marathon in space. In total she has taken nine spacewalks at a total of 62 hours all together and she is ranked among the most experienced space walkers.

NASA picked her for the Commercial Crew Program in 2015, and by 2018, she was assigned to Starliner's first operational mission.

According to her NASA biography, Mrs Williams was born Euclid, Ohio and now makes her home in Needham, Massachusetts,with her husband Michael.

Miso made in space tastes nuttier, researchers find

Miso is a traditional Japanese condiment made by fermenting cooked soybeans and salt.

In a study published in iScience, researchers successfully made miso on the International Space Station (ISS).

They found that the miso smelled and tasted similar to miso fermented on Earth—just with a slightly nuttier, more roasted flavor.

The team hopes this research will help broaden the culinary options available to astronauts, improving the quality of life for long-term space travelers.

"There are some features of the space environment in low Earth orbit—in particular microgravity and increased radiation—that could have impacts on how microbes grow and metabolize and thus how fermentation works," says co-lead author Joshua D. Evans of Technical University of Denmark.

"We wanted to explore the effects of these conditions."

Motivated by curiosity surrounding the food options available to astronauts and how microbial communities evolve in space, the researchers set forth to test whether food fermentation was possible in space and, if so, how foods fermented in space would taste compared to their counterparts on Earth.

The researchers sent a small container of "miso-to-be" to the ISS in March 2020, where it stayed for 30 days to ferment before returning to Earth as miso.

Two other miso batches were fermented on Earth: one in Cambridge, MA, and the other in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Environmental sensing boxes kept tabs on the fermentation environment, closely monitoring temperature, humidity, pressure, and radiation.

Once the ISS miso was back on Earth, the team analyzed its microbial communities, flavor compounds, and sensory properties.

They found that the ISS miso fermented successfully, but that there were notable differences in the bacterial communities present in the misos.

"Fermentation [on the ISS] illustrates how a living system at the microbial scale can thrive through the diversity of its microbial community, emphasizing the potential for life to exist in space," says co-lead author Maggie Coblentz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"While the ISS is often seen as a sterile environment, our research shows that microbes and non-human life have agency in space, raising significant bioethical questions about removing plants and microbes from their home planet and introducing them to extraterrestrial environments."

The team also compared the flavor and scent of the ISS miso with that of the Earth misos. They found that the samples mostly contained the same aroma compounds and similar amino acid profiles.

Also, the researchers who tasted the misos reported that all the samples tasted good, with similar salty umami flavor profiles that were recognizable as miso.

However, they noted that the ISS miso had more of a roasted, nutty flavor than the Earth misos.

"By bringing together microbiology, flavor chemistry, sensory science, and larger social and cultural considerations, our study opens up new directions to explore how life changes when it travels to new environments like space," Evans says.

"It could enhance astronaut well-being and performance, especially on future long-term space missions.

More broadly, it could invite new forms of culinary expression, expanding and diversifying culinary and cultural representation in space exploration as the field grows."

Ultimately, Coblentz says she foresees the impact of this research extending far beyond a single jar of miso made in space.

"We've used something as fundamental as food as a starting point to spark conversations about social structures in space and the value of domestic roles within scientific and engineering fields," she says.

"The way we design systems in space sends a powerful message about who belongs there, who is invited, and how those people will experience space," says Coblentz.
