Parliamentary scrutiny of annual consultant spending has intensified lately, given the growing public service payroll.

Federal managers spending billions on consultants must now sign an oath confirming they have considered the pros and cons of each professional services contract. This comes amidst Parliamentarian complaints of annual consultant spending reaching $25 billion, despite a growing public service payroll.

Treasury Board executive director Emilio Franco testified on May 18 that managers must now sign a pledge before outsourcing work. They must attest that consulting is the correct path and that diligent steps have ensured integrity and proper controls, Franco said.

Cabinet reneged on its 2023 promise to cut consulting spending. New controls were not implemented until earlier this month, according to Blacklock’s.

A June 10 audit revealed federal knowledge of procurement irregularities, possibly breaching the Financial Administration Act. Blacklisted supplier GC Strategies Inc. received over $92.7 million in IT contracts before RCMP raided its offices last year for suspected fraudulent billing.

Auditor General Karen Hogan questioned why IT services are typically procured through staffing companies like GC Strategies. She urged the government to investigate.

“At what point do you believe ministers are accountable for these funds?” asked Conservative MP Stephanie Kusie. “I think it’s ultimately up to this committee and other parliamentarians to hold ministers to account,” replied Auditor Hogan.

“And when we spoke to public servants, some at times were unaware of some of the requirements that existed in the procurement rules,” she told MPs. “I think the rules are clear, in my view.”

The Department of Public Works has implemented a number of measures that should play a key role in “reducing the size of these contracts,” Franco clarified.

Procurement Ombudsman Alexander Jeglic testified November 26 that federal hiring of consultants and contractors was “near the bottom tier.”

“The system has not improved during my tenure,” he said at the time, urging drastic changes. Jeglic's remarks came after reviews revealed favouritism in awarding contracts worth $200.4 million since 2015 to one consultant, McKinsey & Company.

“What transpired with McKinsey is a symptom of a broken system and my office has been identifying many of the same issues year after year, report after report,” he said. “I am very confident in saying it’s time to replace the car.”

The brass nickel-plated tokens and their blue velvet presentation boxes were estimated at $16 per employee, with a total cost of $120,000 approved by then-PHAC president Harpreet Kochhar in June 2021.

Yet, a 2024 report revealed PHAC ignored warnings of an inevitable pandemic, discarded nearly nine million items of personal protective equipment, and failed to address systemic flaws in its National Emergency Strategic Stockpile.

More alarmingly, PHAC overlooked red flags about its chief vaccine researcher at Winnipeg’s National Microbiology Laboratory, who maintained secret ties to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s bioweapons program.

Xiangguo Qiu and her husband, Keding Cheng, an agency biologist, were fired in 2021. The decision came three years after the agency first learned of espionage concerns with the duo — claims that dated all the way back to 2013.

The Prime Minister’s Office insists a “strong and effective public service” is key to a stronger Canada, but sidestepped questions about PHAC’s disarray.

Von der Leyen said that with the signing of the agreement, talks will “swiftly” begin for Canada to enter and bolster the EU’s 150-billion euro ($240 billion) Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program contained within the ReArm Europe policy.

The new defence pact is strategic in nature, with no clear deliverables announced. A joint statement from Canada and the EU said it will serve as a ​​“coherent, high-level political framework” for discussion around defence and security.

Seventy-five percent of the nearly 1,500 people polled by Angus Reid earlier this month said Canada is “being left in the dust” by the international community when it comes to military capabilities. It is a major spike since last year when 58 percent of Canadians had similar concerns.

This month’s survey found that only 14 percent of Canadians think the country’s military is “keeping up,” while 11 percent are uncertain.

Conservative voters are most likely to say the country’s military is lagging at 88 percent, closely followed by Bloc Québécois voters at 82 percent. Sixty-eight percent of Liberal voters held this opinion while 57 percent of NDP voters voiced concern.

As many as 4.8 million new homes must be constructed over the next decade to return to affordability levels last seen in 2019 based on expected demand, Canada’s national housing agency says.

The latest supply gaps estimate report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) found the country will need between 430,000 and 480,000 new housing units each year across the ownership and rental markets until 2035.

CMHC deputy chief economist Aled ab Iorwerth described the gap as “challenging,” noting that it would represent roughly double the current pace of home construction in Canada, which has a projected rate of 245,000 to 250,000 units.

“Tackling this housing affordability challenge is enormous. It’s absolutely critical to increase housing supply,” he said during the Crown agency’s in-house podcast to announce the report. “It’s particularly large in some of our key cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.”

A total of 90,760 housing starts have been documented up to May this year, with the CMHC forecasting an annual average of 245,000 per year for the next decade based on current conditions.

Doubling the pace of housing construction is achievable, ab Iorwerth said, but not without “a significantly larger and modernized workforce, more private investment, less regulation, fewer delays, and lower development costs.” Continue…

Chinese state-linked cyber threat actors were responsible for recent attacks on Canadian telecommunications companies, according to Canada’s cybersecurity agency and the U.S. intelligence and security service. The incidents are part of a global cyber espionage campaign aimed at gathering intelligence data.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and the FBI warned Canadians of the risks posed by state-sponsored cyber actors from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in a bulletin published on June 19, following compromises of Canadian entities earlier this year by a PRC-linked cyber threat actor known as Salt Typhoon.

The agency says three network devices registered to a Canadian telecommunications company were compromised in mid-February, with actors exploiting system vulnerabilities to retrieve configuration files from all three devices, while modifying at least one of the files to enable traffic collection from the network.

“The Cyber Centre is aware of malicious cyber activities currently targeting Canadian telecommunications companies,” reads the bulletin. “The responsible actors are almost certainly PRC state-sponsored actors, specifically Salt Typhoon.”

The agency did not specify which telecommunications companies were impacted.

The agency estimates that PRC cyber actors “will almost certainly continue to target Canadian organizations as part of this espionage campaign, including telecommunications service providers and their clients, over the next two years.” Continue…

Results from Elections Alberta indicate Nenshi garnered 7,952 votes to win the seat previously held by his predecessor, former Alberta NDP leader and premier Rachel Notley. The riding has been an NDP stronghold since 1986.

The United Conservative Party’s Darby Crouch took second place with 1,314 votes, while the third place Liberal candidate Don Slater won 195 and Republican Party of Alberta hopeful Ravina Chand had 65.

Nenshi told supporters in a speech at an Edmonton hotel that voters had sent a “clear message” to the UCP by handing him more than 80 percent of the vote, saying his supporters want to see change in the province.

“Life in Alberta shouldn’t feel like a monthly test of survival,” Nenshi told supporters gathered at the hotel for a victory party. “You shouldn’t have to hold your breath every time you open your utility bill or worry if this is the month your rent or mortgage finally becomes unaffordable. Early on Sunday morning, word leaked out from the Pacific Coast port of Kitimat, B.C. that Canada had produced its first-ever liquid natural gas for export.

Unnamed sources told Reuters that at 4 a.m. local time, the $40-billion LNG Canada terminal was first able to turn Canadian natural gas into a super-chilled liquid destined for Asian buyers. It’s set to be loaded into the LNG tanker Gaslog Glasgow, a ship that as of press time was just entering Canadian territorial waters.

Although the milestone is being feted as the beginning of a new multi-billion-dollar Canadian resource sector, it also neatly illustrates how far behind Canada has been allowed to lag in an industry where it could feasibly have been a dominant power.

In all the world’s other major producers of natural gas, this moment came years if not decades ago. The United States exported its first LNG in 2016, Qatar dispatched its first LNG vessels in 1997 and Australia was pioneering LNG export technology as early as 1989.

All three are now raking in hundreds of billions in annual LNG money that could have been Canada’s if it been able to reach the starting line earlier than Sunday morning.

In Australia, the LNG export sector is now bringing in the Canadian equivalent of $220 million per day. According to the most recent figures from Australian Energy Producers, annual LNG export earnings were now worth $81.5 billion CDN.

This kind of money added to the Canadian economy would represent a three per cent rise in overall GDP. Put another way, it would be akin to adding a Manitoba’s worth of extra GDP to the economy (Manitoba’s GDP was $91.9 billion in 2023). Continue…

Germany suspended compulsory military service in 2011, but the service could be reactivated via a parliamentary ruling. The German government’s coalition agreement currently only allows for voluntary military service. The Gates Foundation reportedly said on Tuesday that it will commit $1.6 billion to support Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which seeks to provide poor children around the world with vaccines.

Microsoft cofounder and friend of Jeffrey Epstein, Bill Gates, is claiming the number of kids dying around the world will likely go up this year due to U.S. funding cuts to foreign aid, according to a report by Reuters.

Therefore, the Gates Foundation is committing $1.6 billion over the next five years to support Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, “a public-private partnership that helps vaccinate more than half the world’s children against some of the world’s deadliest diseases,” the organization’s website states.

The vaccine alliance is reportedly aiming to raise $9 billion from 2026 to 2030 at an upcoming event, hosted by the European Union and the Gates Foundation, in Brussels on Wednesday.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance CEO Sania Nishtar, claimed that the loss of U.S. taxpayer funding could result in around 1.2 million additional deaths over the next five years.

Canadians are angry that Liberals have violated flag guidelines to promote so-called “pride” month.

In a June 22 X post, the Government of Canada, which is run by the Liberal party, shared what looks to be a digitally-created Canadian flag with rainbow colors instead of the flag’s traditional red, a modification forbidden by official guidelines.

As explained on Canada’s webpage outlining flag decorum, “the National Flag of Canada should not be written on or marked in any way, nor be covered by other objects.”

Yet the official Canada X account included such an image, while stating, “In Canada we know that diversity is our strength and we love to celebrate it! This #BeingYouDay, let it be a reminder to be authentically yourself and celebrate all the things that make you, YOU!”

Canadians on X quickly pointed out that the modified flag not only undermines Canadian values but also violates flag guidelines.

“This is an abomination of the Canadian flag,” one user wrote.

“That’s not our flag,” another declared.

“Diversity is not a strength, it does not promote cohesion once you go beyond a certain point and then causes social fractures,” said another.

PwC’s 2025 Voice of the Consumer Report found Canadians are considerably more inclined to select imported products compared to the global average of 56 percent choosing cheaper prices over buying local.

BC RCMP Find ‘Fully Functional’ Grenades in Handbag During Home Search

Police in northern B.C. say they had to evacuate an apartment complex after “fully functional” hand grenades were found while officers were executing a search warrant during a drug investigation.

Prince George RCMP said the incident happened while they conducted searches at multiple locations around the city on June 6 and June 7. The searches were an effort to make a “sizeable dent” in the illegal drug trade in the city, RCMP said in a June 24 release.

During a search of one of the residences, officers found a handbag that appeared to contain “several hand grenades,” the release said.

The RCMP’s explosives disposal unit from the Lower Mainland was contacted to dispose of the grenades, which were found to be “fully functional.” As a result, the apartment complex was evacuated in the middle of the night as a safety precaution.

“The evacuations were necessary to ensure residents’ safety and those effected were understanding and cooperative with law enforcement officers throughout the event,” said the release.

The investigation is ongoing.

During the searches, officers also located nearly 20 kilograms of various illegal drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA and ketamine. They also seized more than a dozen cases of contraband cigarettes and several high-powered firearms and handguns with ammunition, according to police.

“These findings represent a significant increase to the threat level we are encountering within the illicit drug trade in Prince George. As the hub city for Northern B.C., we are seeing an increase in the amount of drug trafficking through our community, both as a destination as well as a through point for other cities in the area,” Sgt. The border agency says the designation, which was expanded last year, denies any senior official of the regime access to Canada in the first place.

It also allows the agency to take immigration enforcement action against any regime member who came to Canada before or after the designation.

The oilsands have the potential to boost output by an additional half a million barrels per day from last year’s figures by 2030, despite global crude price uncertainties, according to the latest forecast released by S&P Global Commodity Insights.

Production is anticipated to reach 3.5 million barrels daily this year and surpass 3.9 million barrels per day within five years.

The new estimates amount to a 3 percent rise from S&P’s previous 10-year forecast for the industry and represent the fourth consecutive upward adjustment. Production is anticipated to level off later this decade, reaching approximately 3.7 million barrels per day by 2035, an increase of 100,000 barrels per day compared to S&P’s prior assessment.

S&P chief Canadian oil analyst Kevin Birn said the rise in production from the oilsands is not propelled by any new projects, but rather by minor expansions and upgrades to current operations.

“The increased trajectory for Canadian oilsands production growth amidst a period of oil price volatility reflects producers’ continued emphasis on optimization—and the favourable economics that underpin such operations,” Birn said in a June 24 press release. Continue…

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy formally approved plans Wednesday to set up a new international court to prosecute senior Russian officials for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The special tribunal will be created through an agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe, the continent´s top human rights body. Zelenskyy visited the Strasbourg-based organization for the first time as part of the announcement.

The special tribunal aims to target senior Russian leaders for the “crime of aggression,” which underpins the countless war crimes Ukraine accuses Russian forces of committing since the start of the war on Feb. 24, 2022. Existing international courts, including the International Criminal Court in The Hague lack jurisdiction to prosecute Russian nationals for that specific offense.

Since early in the conflict, Kyiv has been pushing for the creation of a special tribunal that goes beyond prosecuting war crimes that Ukraine alleged Russian forces committed – including bombing civilian infrastructure, killing civilians, rape, taking hostages and torture. The Federal Court of Appeal has denied the request of the owners of a southeastern B.C. ostrich farm to perform additional avian flu testing on their flock in an effort to prevent a cull mandated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The decision, released online this week, grants a temporary suspension to the upcoming cull of the farm’s 399 birds. The court will issue its ruling on the farm’s appeal of the cull by the week of July 21.

Universal Ostrich Farm became the centre of protest and media attention after dozens of its ostriches died of avian flu in December 2024 and January 2025, and hundreds of supporters camped out at the farm last month to protest the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) planned cull of the herd.

The CFIA says the avian flu outbreak at the farm is of particular concern because it is a mutation not seen anywhere else in Canada, an assertion that farm spokesperson Katie Pasitney denies.

“They don’t want us to test them because they know that we’re going to find that all of our ostriches are absolutely negative,” Pasitney said in an interview with The Epoch Times. “They are not shedding the virus. They don’t want the world to see that we have a recovered flock that they almost killed due to the failure in their own policies.”

The CFIA has said failing to cull the ostrich herd poses a risk to public safety, noting that compensation could reach up to $3,000 for each bird. Continue…

Twelve cases of measles in B.C., including three new cases in Chilliwack, have been confirmed. Across Canada, there are now 1,983 confirmed cases of the potentially dangerous infectious airborne disease in the country’s latest outbreak, according to an e-mail from Health Canada to The Epoch Times.

“There is indeed a multijurisdictional measles outbreak ongoing in Canada,” Health Canada said, adding that “of the 3,381 measles cases (3,081 confirmed, 300 probable) reported in 2025, most cases (2,273 cases; 1,983 confirmed, 290 probable) are linked to this outbreak.”

Canada reached elimination status on measles in 1998, but several outbreaks have the country on track to lose this status after October of this year. The highest provincial infection numbers come from Ontario, with 2,186 confirmed cases of measles, followed by Alberta with 961 and Manitoba with 113. Continue…

A B.C. teacher has been given a one-day suspension over “inappropriate” stories that contained “content of a sexual nature” that he shared with students.

Robert Acheson worked as an inclusion teacher at a high school in the Chilliwack school district when the incidents occurred, according to a consent agreement by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

A complaint was made on June 22, 2023, about his conduct during the school year.

According to the consent agreement, Acheson had commented on multiple occasions on the appearance of a student and the physical appearance of another staff member at the school.

He is also said to have shared an “inappropriate” story with a student about a “traumatic personal incident” that occurred when Acheson was in high school or middle school. The story had “inappropriate content of a sexual nature.”

Acheson was also accused of sharing a personal story with students about a high school girlfriend. It too was said to have contained “inappropriate content of a sexual nature.” Continue…

Health Canada is warning Canadians about the risks of purchasing online drugs and health products, after an international operation targeting counterfeit medications resulted in the confiscation of more than 19,000 packages before they could enter the country.

The June 25 advisory comes the same day that the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) announced the seizure of 50.4 million doses of illicit pharmaceuticals worth more than $88 million as well as the arrests of 769 suspects, the largest seizure and arrest count in the organization’s history.

Dubbed Operation Pangea XVII, the five-month operation across 90 countries also led to the dismantling of 123 criminal groups worldwide, Interpol said in a press release.

Health Canada inspected 19,193 packages entering the country as part of the operation, preventing 7,096 from entering and confiscating an additional 539 at the border suspected of containing counterfeit or unauthorized health products valued at approximately $378,000.

Nearly 70 percent of the seized products were sexual enhancement medications and 10 percent were herbal and dietary supplements, Health Canada said. Smaller amounts of veterinary and antiparasitic drugs, hormones, antibiotics, and weight loss drugs were also seized. Continue…

6 out of 10 Canadians Concerned With Misinformation: Statistics Canada

Nearly 60 percent of Canadians say they are concerned with misinformation, according to a new Statistics Canada study.

The report released on June 18 found that 59 percent of Canadians said they had a very high or extreme level of concern over online misinformation, while 14 percent said they were not very or not at all concerned. Additionally, 43 percent of Canadians said they found it harder to distinguish between true and false news or information compared to three years earlier.

As first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter, the report said concern with misinformation was associated with lower trust in various institutions like banks and the justice system. “Those who reported being somewhat, not very, or not at all concerned about online misinformation were often more likely to have higher levels of confidence in Canadian institutions,” the report said.

There were regional differences in Canadians’ concern with misinformation, with 50 percent of Quebecers being concerned with it compared to 63 percent in Ontario and the Prairies and 62 percent in British Columbia.

The report’s authors said Quebec’s relative lack of concern with misinformation could be in part “due to the unique sociodemographic make up” of the province, which includes an older population and small number of French-language news sources to use to verify information.

The report also found indications that some groups with lower levels of concern about misinformation, typically younger or less educated Canadians, felt less optimistic about democracy in Canada. Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson says that Canada needs the “same spirit” that mobilized the country’s workforce and industrial base during and after World War II in order to rebuild the nation’s economy today.

Delivering a keynote speech at the Toronto Region Board of Trade on June 25, Hodgson said he wants all Canadians to “stand side-by-side” as Canada moves forward on major projects of national importance in resources, energy, and infrastructure.

Hodgson, who previously worked with Prime Minister Mark Carney at Goldman Sachs, said Canada will need to double its electricity production in the next two decades and move forward on major projects in mining, forestry, energy, and critical mineral extraction. Canada’s growing importance in “the entire value chain” of critical minerals is a big opportunity, according to Hodgson, who said, “We can and will extract our minerals sustainably, refine them responsibly, and move them to market efficiently.”

Bill C-5, legislation that deals with major projects, goes before the Senate this week for final approval after having passed the House of Commons. It would fast-track the regulatory process on major infrastructure projects deemed in the national interest, and commits to reaching a final decision on such projects within two years of their proposal. It would also help projects “stay on track,” according to Hodgson.

In December, 2024 the Canada Energy Regulator projected that Canada would have to more than double its electricity output in order to meet commercial, industrial, and residential needs, with particular demand coming from electric vehicles.

In addition to sounding a bright note about Canada’s economic future and pointing to a growing pivot towards nuclear energy, Hodgson said the government is building “strong partnerships with Canada’s unions” and making it easier for workers to move between provinces for work. Continue…

A report presented on June 25 by the United Nations’ special rapporteur on violence against women warns of emerging forms of sex-based violence, including medical procedures related to “gender transitions” in minors.

“Allowing children access to such procedures not only violates their right to safety, security and freedom from violence, but also disregards their human right to the highest standards of health and goes against their best interests,” the report says.

Titled “Sex-based violence against women and girls: new frontiers and emerging issues,” the report acknowledges the “concerted international push to delink the definition of men and women from their biological sex,” which then essentially erases the legal definition of a woman.

According to the report, redefining legal categories of “man” and “woman” apart from biological sex may result in the erasure of women’s legal identity and protections.

“The erasure of sex as a distinct vector of analysis within law and policy obscures the unique vulnerabilities of females, increasing the risk of exploitation,” the report says.

Ottawa has changed its requirements for post-study work permits, adding more than 100 fields of study to its list of eligible programs that students can complete before applying for work visas. Meanwhile, 178 formerly eligible fields have now been cut.

The move is part of broader student visa changes first announced in November 2024.

The changes require international students who want to qualify for a post-graduation work permit to complete a program in a field that is linked to long-term labour shortages in Canada. The change applies to those in non-degree programs or those who are not earning a bachelor or postgraduate degree.

More than 900 fields of study are eligible for the permit. The new eligibility criteria, announced June 25, went into effect the same day.

The updated list of eligible fields of study is connected to the 2025 Express Entry priorities that were announced in February, the government said. The list focuses on attracting immigrants with skills in sectors that have a labour shortage.

There is no evidence to indicate the outcome of April’s federal election was influenced by foreign interference, disinformation, or voter intimidation, despite a marked increase in the number of complaints about the campaign, Canada’s elections commissioner says.

A preliminary report from Commissioner Caroline Simard said her office received 16,115 complaints related to the spring campaign that concluded on April 28. That is seven times the number of complaints received during the elections in 2019 and 2021, the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections (OCCE) said, noting that it was receiving as many as 650 complaints each hour in the early stages of the campaign.

A portion of these figures can be attributed to receiving multiple complaints about identical issues, the report said. Common complaint themes identified by the commissioner were related to elections advertising, publication of false statements about candidates, and distribution of photos or videos of ballots.

Meanwhile, the volume of complaints on more serious issues was lower than her office expected.

“While my office did receive complaints regarding allegations related to foreign interference, the use of artificial intelligence, and disinformation, it was certainly not of the magnitude we anticipated in most cases,” she said in the report. “So far, based on our initial observations and the information we have, there is no evidence to suggest that the election outcome was affected in any way.”

A number of complaints lodged with Simard’s office thus far indicated either public misconceptions about what constitutes illegal activities in elections, or confusion about which part of the Canada Elections Act had been breached, the report said. Continue…

Defence Minister David McGuinty says Ottawa is considering two different partnerships with Ukraine to co-produce drones, following the lead of other European countries.

McGuinty made the comments at a press conference following a two-day visit to Latvia on June 26, saying Ukraine has made “huge strides and advances in drone technologies” because of its war with Russia.

He said partnering with Ukraine on drones is “under active consideration at the Department of National Defence.”

Ottawa is contemplating the same partnership that France and Ukraine have established, in which automaker Renault joined with Ukrainian manufacturers to build drone factories in both countries, the defence minister said.

McGuinty says another possibility Canada is considering is the “Danish model,” where the government offers financial assistance and then procures drones directly from Ukrainian companies.

“The nature and the structure of the global economy and global security has shifted foundationally in the last 30 years in a degree and rapidity that’s unprecedented in mankind,” said Balsillie in an interview. “And if you want to be a sovereign and secure and prosperous nation, you need the capacity for navigating that on a front-footed basis. So, this investment is all about that.”

A family from Afghanistan that fled Russia after their eldest son got a draft notice in 2023 has won another chance at staying in Canada in part because some of their five sons could get pulled into the war on Ukraine or one of the belligerent bear’s future fights.

Canada’s Refugee Appeal Division (RAD) found that if Alireza and Shafiq Saberi and four of their children were sent back to Russia, two of their sons, ages 17 and 13, would likely be conscripted during the conflict and suffer discrimination in the military.

The division determined that the two teenagers were refugees, but rejected appeals for refugee protection for the parents and their two youngest children, finding it “difficult to imagine” the two boys, now 10 and three, would suffer the same fate.

It determined the father was too old for conscription and Russia isn’t drafting women.

However, a Federal Court judge has overturned that conclusion. Justice Angus Grant, in a recent decision out of Toronto, noted that the RAD should have considered the possible future treatment of Ali Yaser, the couple’s 10-year-old son, if he were drafted. Grant noted concerns both that the boy could be treated poorly in the Russian military on account of being a minority and that he risks conscription in the future. Continue…

Sports and leisure areas are expected to remain intact, though minor amenities like a mini-golf course and barbecue lawn will be relocated. Officials were keen to stress that historically sensitive parts of the former forced labor camp will be left untouched.

Meanwhile, discussions about using Tempelhofer Feld for urgently needed housing for Berliners remain on the back burner. The newspaper said it had reviewed “hundreds of pages of documents held in archives in Freiburg, Germany, detailing the extraordinary – and blood-soaked – life and times of Dobrowolski, which are themselves worthy of a spy thriller.”

Researchers Find ‘Oldest Rocks on Earth’ in Northern Quebec

Rocks found in northern Quebec have been confirmed to be the oldest on Earth, dating back more than 4 billion years, according to a recent study published in Science.

The rocks were found by researchers in 2017 from near the municipality of Nunavik as part of Christian Sole’s master’s project. Jonathan O’Neil, who supervised the study, said that at the time, the rocks in the area had been estimated to be about 3.8 million years old, but new testing has dated them back even further to 4.16 billion years, or from the Hadean eon (4.6 billion to 4 billion years ago).

“Everybody agrees that [the rocks in northern Quebec are] at least 3.8 billion years old, but not everybody agrees that they were actually Hadean. Now with that new study, I think we’re going to firmly confirm that these rocks are Hadean and the oldest rocks on Earth,” O’Neil told The Epoch Times in an interview.

He said the test results confirm that the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt may be the only place where rocks formed during the Hadean eon have still been preserved.

The rocks offer a “unique window into Earth’s early history,” O’Neil said.

“Rocks for us are like books. We’re reading the books that are the rocks and the mineral that through their mineralogy, their petrology, their chemistry, all of this, it helps us to reconstruct the geological conditions, the tectonic settings, how things were moving, the temperature, the pressures, all of these things.” Continue…

Police Investigating Explosion at BC MLA’s Office

RCMP in North Vancouver said they’re investigating after an explosion at an NDP MLA’s office.

Police said they first received reports of a “loud bang” in the 100 block of West 1st Street around 2:45 a.m. on June 27. Officers attended the area but did not find anything suspicious.

A second incident happened around 4:15 a.m. on June 27 at MLA Bowinn Ma’s North Vancouver-Lonsdale office on West Esplanade Avenue and Chesterfield Avenue, RCMP said.

Officers responded immediately and, upon searching the area, located evidence of damage to the front door of an office building in the 200 block of West Esplanade Avenue indicative of an explosive device detonation.

Officers noting the blast breached the front door and damaged the door frame.

Cpl. Mansoor Sahak told reporters that police called in an explosive disposal unit. He said the investigation is ongoing and police have not determined a motive. Continue…

An Alberta court has granted an injunction against a provincial law that would prevent doctors from offering gender transition surgeries and medications to youth.

Premier Danielle Smith’s government introduced the legislation in October 2024, which was passed in December. It was one of three pieces of legislation introduced that deals with gender issues in the province, including gender transition procedures for youth, regulations for transgender athletes in female sports, and parental rights in schools.

The Health Statutes Amendment Act bans gender transition surgeries for those younger than 18 years. It also prevents the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapies for children 15 years and younger.

In December 2024, Egale Canada and the Skipping Stone Foundation, along with five Alberta families, filed a Charter challenge, asking for a court injunction. The hearings for the injunction were held in March in Calgary.

Alberta Court of King’s Bench Justice Allison Kuntz granted a temporary injunction against the law on June 27, saying in her written judgement that the law raises serious issues that need to be heard in court.

Kuntz said that a temporary stop to the law was needed to prevent what she calls “irreparable harm” for young patients. She said the injunction would protect youth while the issue is further examined. Continue…

Thousands of protestors hit the streets of Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday demanding dissolution of the parliament and snap elections. The new round of protests comes after eight months of intermittent unrest triggered by the deadly collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station in the city of Novi Sad last November.

Saturday’s demonstration coalesced after the Serbian government refused to heed an “ultimatum” issued by student groups calling for the dissolution of parliament, which would pave the way for snap elections.

They demanded that an announcement to such an effect be made by 9pm on Saturday and threatened “civil disobedience” if one was not forthcoming.

The Serbian authorities snubbed the demand, with President Aleksandar Vucic stating only the government was ready to “hear out” the protesters and warning them against violence. The country’s leadership has repeatedly suggested the unrest is being stirred up from abroad and described the protests as an attempt at a ‘color revolution.

Vucic reiterated this stance earlier on Saturday, blaming the unrest on unspecified “foreign powers.” “The country will be defended, and thugs will face justice,” Vucic told reporters.

Alberta has recorded an $8.3 billion surplus, according to Finance Minister Nate Horner’s recent financial update.

He said it was Alberta’s fourth consecutive surplus in as many years.

“Personal income tax revenue was a record $16.1 billion, or $516 million higher than budget, driven by strong growth in personal incomes and population,” he said. “Corporate income tax revenue was $8.1 billion, up $1.1 billion from budget due to strong corporate profits in sectors such as oil and gas, construction, and finance.”

Horner also said that oil production grew to nearly 4 million barrels a day.

“The average price of oil was $74.34 per barrel, slightly higher than the $74 projected at budget 2024. Rig drilling activity increased by 4.4 percent, and natural gas production also increased despite weaker prices.” Continue…

Industry Minister Melanie Joly said the Canadian government issued an order against Chinese surveillance camera manufacturer Hikvision to close for national security reasons.

"The government has determined that Hikvision Canada Inc's continued operations in Canada would be injurious to Canada's national security," Joly wrote on X.

The U.S. has expressed concerns with Hikvision over its use of equipment from China's Xinjiang region, which is the basis of reports of abuses against the Uyghur population, according to Reuters.

A Hikvision spokesperson said the company "strongly" disagrees with the decision, arguing it "lacks a factual basis, procedural fairness, and transparency."
