USDA Shocks the Market With Its Eye-Popping Corn Yield
The USDA stunned grain markets with its August WASDE report, projecting a record-breaking U.S. corn yield of 188.8 bushels per acre, nearly 10 bushels higher than last year and well above trade expectations. This pushed total corn production to a historic 16.7 billion bushels, up 1 billion from the previous month.
In addition to the yield increase, USDA raised harvested corn acreage by 1.9 million acres, based on updated data from the Farm Service Agency and National Agricultural Statistics Service. This rare August adjustment contributed to a sharp rise in projected ending stocks, now estimated at 2.117 billion bushels.
Despite the bearish implications for corn prices, USDA also increased projected usage to a record 16 billion bushels, helping offset some of the surplus. However, analysts caution that the yield estimates are based on satellite imagery and farmer surveys—not field data—raising concerns about accuracy, especially given recent weather challenges.
Meanwhile, soybean yield was also forecast at a record 53.6 bushels per acre, but with reduced harvested acreage, total production and ending stocks were revised downward, offering some bullish support for soybean markets.

Teamsters pour money into GOP, shifting away from Dems
It wasn’t just 2024: the Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien is signaling a more permanent realignment by donating to battleground Republicans in the upcoming midterms.
For the second year in a row, the labor union’s political arm donated to the Republicans’ House campaign arm after nearly two decades of mostly backing Democrats. The labor union’s D.R.I.V.E political action committee — Democrat, Republican, Independent Voter Education — gave the National Republican Congressional Committee $5,000 in the second quarter.
In addition to giving to the NRCC, Teamsters doled out a combined $62,000 in contributions to nearly two-dozen GOP congressional candidates, including in significant battleground districts:
-Rob Bresnahan, Mike Kelly and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania
-Pete Stauber and Tom Emmer of Minnesota
-Nicole Malliotakis, Andrew Garbarino, Nick LaLota and Mike Lawler of New York
-Jefferson Shreve of Indiana
-Dave Taylor, Bob Latta, Michael Rulli and Dave Joyce of Ohio
-Jeff Van Drew and Chris Smith of New Jersey
-David Rouzer of North Carolina
-Tom Barrett of Michigan
-Blake Moore of Utah
-Darin LaHood and Mike Bost of Illinois
-Troy Nehls of Texas
-Vern Buchanan of Florida
The group also gave this year to GOP Sens. Deb Fischer of Nebraska, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Jon Husted of Ohio, and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania.
And it’s not just Congress: the Teamsters’ political arm donated $50,000 to the Republican Attorneys General Association this past June.
“Our members are working people whose interests cut across party lines,” Kara Deniz, a Teamsters spokesperson, told POLITICO. “And there’s no value in living in a bubble … where you only talk to certain people to the exclusion of others.”
The group hasn’t forsaken Democrats — it still gives them more, including $15,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in April.
“Congressional Republicans have betrayed America’s workers and union members by selling out our communities for the GOP’s billionaire backers,” said DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton. “House Democrats will continue to work hard to earn the support of unions and their members who have built this nation and will be critical in our comeback to victory next year.”
But the GOP donations signify a marked shift in the pivotal labor union’s strategy since 2024, when Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien delivered a historic address at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and his outfit began more seriously supporting Republicans.
It comes as O’Brien has sought to reach out beyond the union’s traditional audience — and union members themselves are more open to backing Republicans. He recently hosted Ramaswamy on his podcast, and sat with The Free Press for an interview with Bari Weiss.
And it’s a warning sign for Democrats that their labor support — long a keystone of their base — continues to erode, as President Donald Trump chisels away at it in his effort to remake the GOP as a working-class party.
“Labor unions are finally recognizing the fact that their memberships are made up of workers from across the political spectrum,” said Bresnahan, who received $5,000 from the Teamsters and whose grandfather was a member of the IBEW.
Last year, the Teamsters donated $25,000 to the NRCC and gave $45,000 to the RNC in an effort to diversify their support as their rank-and-file members move rightward.
“Hard-working men and women across the country are rallying behind Republicans up and down the ballot because we fight for their jobs, their families, and their future,” said NRCC spokesperson Mike Marinella. “Democrats have abandoned them for their deeply out of touch, radical policies. We’re bringing these voters home, and they will be key in growing our House majority.”

Japan to Start Test Mining Rare Earths from Seabed in 2026
Japan will begin trial mining for rare earths off Minamitorishima in 2026, followed by pilot extraction in 2027, aiming to reduce reliance on China.
Amid the prolonged United States–China trade standoff, interest in rare earths is rising. China, the world's largest producer, has used export restrictions to pressure the United States, causing real-world disruptions. At one point, Japanese automakers were forced to halt production. To reduce reliance on China, Japan plans to begin trial mining in January 2026 on the seabed off Minamitorishima, its easternmost territory.
"It's important to have a supply source ready to operate at any time in case rare earth shipments to Japan are cut off," says Shoichi Ishii, program director of the Cabinet Office's Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), which oversees the government-led project. The deposits lie about 6,000 meters (19,685 ft) deep.
A 6,000-meter pipe for lifting rare-earth–rich mud from the seabed was delivered at the end of May. Furthermore, a remotely operated vehicle is due to arrive from Norway in August. If it comes on schedule, the next step will be to load the equipment onto a research vessel, followed by operational checks.
The deposits off Minamitorishima were discovered in 2012. Some researchers estimate the reserves could meet global demand for centuries. SIP, however, describes them only as "potentially viable for industrial-scale development." The project will assess economic feasibility after pilot mining in the first half of fiscal 2027.
Efforts to secure domestic rare earth supplies are gaining momentum. In July, Japan agreed with the European Union to strengthen supply chains, with joint mining also under consideration. In the private sector, Nissan Motor and Waseda University are co-developing rare-earth recycling technology. They aim to commercialize it around 2030.
China's dominance in the sector looms large in the background. In April, in retaliation for the Trump administration's high tariffs, Beijing tightened export controls on rare earths. This temporarily halted production at automakers in Japan, the US, and Europe. Washington was forced to scale back planned tariff hikes. This fueled the perception that it had "given in" to China, underscoring the strategic importance of rare earths.
Japan had a bitter experience in 2010, when a Chinese fishing boat collided with Japanese patrol vessels near the Senkaku Islands, leading to an effective Chinese export ban. "It could happen again at any time," warns Ishii. Although Japan has moved faster than Western nations to diversify its suppliers, about 60% of its rare earth imports still come from China.
"Some heavy rare earths, scarcer and more valuable than light varieties, can only be mined in China," notes Professor Kazuto Suzuki of the University of Tokyo, who is knowledgeable about economic security.
The Minamitorishima deposits are thought to be rich in these elements. However, extracting and refining them will require costly operations and advanced technology. "We'll need to develop the necessary technology to meet these challenges," Suzuki says.

AI startup Perplexity (who Trump Media & Technology Group partnered with) is raising more money at a $20 billion valuation
Perplexity is raising yet another round of funding, Business Insider has learned.
The AI search engine is seeking a fresh fundraise at a $20 billion post-money valuation, according to an email sent to prospective investors seen by BI, and a source with knowledge of the raise.
It’s been a busy year for Perplexity, which has become one of AI’s hottest startups with funding from investors including SoftBank, Nvidia, and Jeff Bezos. Perplexity just made a $34.5 billion bid for Google’s Chrome browser earlier this week, and it’s been contending with analysts urging Apple to buy the booming startup for months.
The new valuation represents a $2 billion jump from Perplexity’s most recent valuation of $18 billion in its latest fundraising round in July, as first reported by Bloomberg last month. That’s up from a $520 million valuation in January 2024.
All the while, Perplexity’s business has been surging. The startup, which launched in 2022 to combine large-language models with web searches to provide real-time answers to user questions, boosted its annual recurring revenue above $150 million by the middle of 2025. That’s more than quadruple its roughly $35 million in ARR a year ago, according to the email seen by BI.
Perplexity head of communication Jesse Dwyer said Perplexity is currently doing more than $150 million in ARR. He didn’t answer further questions for this story.
Perplexity is facing fierce competition from Big Tech giants like Google — the startup announced its own AI-native browser Comet last month — alongside AI leaders like OpenAI, which is reportedly working on its own web browser.
It’s not clear who’s set to lead the latest funding round. Perplexity has raised about $1.5 billion to date, according to PitchBook.
The $20 billion valuation Perplexity is seeking, while a meaningful lift for the company, still doesn’t come close to the $34.5 billion Perplexity offered this week to buy Chrome from Google. Google hasn’t signaled any intent to sell the browser, despite facing pressure from the Department of Justice to divest Chrome over antitrust concerns. Perplexity told The Wall Street Journal it has received commitments from several investors, including large venture capital funds, to fund the transaction, though it didn’t disclose the names of those investors.
Many have dismissed the bid as little more than a marketing stunt.
“It makes them seem like a big player and helps them with fundraising, talent, and user attention by staying in the news cycle,” one VC, who is not an investor in Perplexity, said.
Perplexity has also sidestepped rumors that it could make a deal with Apple as the iPhone maker falls behind in the AI race.
Dan Ives, managing director and equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities, said acquiring Perplexity should be a “no-brainer deal” for the tech behemoth. “For Apple, time is ticking,” he told BI. Dwyer said at the time that the team was “unaware of any M&A discussions that involve Perplexity.”

Dow rallies 400 points for a second day, S&P 500 closes at another record high
Stocks rose Wednesday, adding to their recent momentum as expectations for lower U.S. Federal Reserve rates continue driving the major indexes to all-time highs.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average
gained 463.66 points, or 1.04%, at 44,922.27. The S&P 500
added 0.32% to finish at 6,466.58, while the Nasdaq Composite
settled up 0.14% at 21,713.14. Both indexes closed at record highs for the second straight day.
AMD
popped 5.4% to lead gains in tech. Apple
also advanced 1.6%. Shares of Paramount Skydance
soared 36.7%.
Those moves followed a record-setting session Tuesday sparked by a tamer-than-expected inflation report that gave investors hope of a Fed rate cut in September. Traders are pricing in a near 100% chance of a rate cut at the Fed’s September meeting, per trading data from the CME’s FedWatch Tool.
Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird, also pointed to a strong second-quarter earnings season so far as another market catalyst. While the pace of earnings reports has lulled these last few days, it ramps back up next week with a slew of big retail names on the docket.
“This has been a really impressive earning season, which showcases kind of a corporate resilience from all the headwinds that we saw across the summer,” he said to CNBC. “You also had just a really nice kind of breadth.”
Investors rotated out of megacap “Magnificent Seven” stocks in favor of their smaller counterparts, with the Russell 2000
gaining 2% on Wednesday. Small-cap stocks are a beneficiary of lower interest rates, since they also lower the cost of capital and possibly boost consumer spending.
Thursday’s producer price index report on wholesale inflation will add another piece of the economic picture. The report comes ahead of the Fed’s Jackson Hole gathering on Aug. 21-23, which could also help shape expectations for the central bank’s next policy move.
