The Police Found Messages After Kirk’s Killing. What They Mean Is Unclear1/2Sept. 13, 2025

The messages relied on an enigmatic, coded communication style used by the habitually online.

When investigators in the killing of Charlie Kirk found a bolt-action rifle near the site where he was shot on a Utah campus, they said they also found casings scrawled with what seemed to be mysterious messages.

One read, “hey fascist! CATCH! (up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols),” according to an affidavit filed on Friday in a Utah court.

If the reference to fascism appeared to be straightforward, the arrows were most likely understandable only to certain subsets of gamers.They seem to referto the popular video game Helldivers 2 and its sequence of controller moves to unleash a powerful bomb.

“It’s a joke in the Helldivers community that you can shut down any argument you disagree with by entering ^ > vvv and blowing the whole thing up,” Steve Iannelli, 38, a mechanical engineer and experienced player of the game who lives in Baltimore, said in an email.

The messages, which the authorities believe the suspect etched,are some of the few known clues to his possible motivations. Late Thursday, they arrested Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah man, and accused him of killing Mr. Kirk.

Perpetrators of high-profile violence have often used such messages to communicate their beliefs. And in some of the most violent attacks of the last decade, the young gunmen used the culture of small internet forums to try to both justify their attacks and appeal to the niche groups they believed would approve of their actions. (They are not solving it the NYTS is creating a narrative for their stupid readers)

The messages found on the casings — including puerile jokes and a reference to a popular Italian song — are rooted in that coded communication style of the habitually online.

Even the reference to fascism has a clear echo in Helldivers 2, a satirical science fiction game in which the player battles an alien invasion on behalf of an Earth that is ruled by a thinly veiled fascistic government.

But these messages are difficult to parse(no they are not, NYTs just trying to confuse and deflect). Internet in-jokes and references are slippery things,often deployed with multiple layers of irony. That left many Americans trying to crack the enigmatic messages: Was Mr. Robinson a man of the left or of the right, or something else entirely? (Seriously the NYTs can interpret anything or abuibd if it right speech, but use enigmatic, for the obvious. Propaganda!)

In a news conference on Friday morning, Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah, a Republican, said that the phrase “hey fascist! CATCH!” clearly showed the gunman’s intent. “I think that speaks for itself,” he said.

But even that message, which many on the right believed placed Mr. Robinson on the far left, may not be a reliable signpost to the suspect’s political beliefs.

“It’s very hard to map a political ideology on this mishmash of video game references and hints of different internet subcultures,” said Emerson Brooking, a fellow at the Atlantic Council, an international-affairs think tank, and a former cyberpolicy adviser at the Defense Department.

Perpetrators’ use of language from the online world is not confirmation that violent actors are influenced by video games. The American Psychological Association’s standing position is that there is “insufficient scientific evidence to support a causal link between violent video games and violent behavior.”

But the use of language does say something about the ubiquity of online gaming culture. A recent Pew survey found that 85 percent of U.S. teenagers play video games, with 40 percent considering themselves to be “gamers.” (NYTs get their advertising money from Game countries that destroy society)

In some cases, attackers have explained themselves clearly. In 2019, when a gunman opened fire on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 51 people and injuring dozens more, he posted a manifesto that cited popular far-right memes. Containing white nationalist rhetoric, Islamophobic slurs and a copypasta — a rant that is copied and pasted multiple times — it was designed to appeal to a fringe community. Both his livestream of the attack and the manifesto were viewed millions of times and continue to be posted to online forums today.

Three years later, in May 2022, when a gunman killed 10 people in Buffalo, N.Y., he, too, posted a screed, describing how he had drawn inspiration from the Christchurch shooting and citing some of the same memes.

As of Friday evening, much about Mr. Robinson and his motives remained unclear. (No it’s fucking not, he hated Charlie and his message). He is registered to vote in Utah, but he is not affiliated with a political party and had never voted in an election, according to the Washington County Clerk.

In an interview on Friday, Adrian Rivera, 22, who had taken a woodworking class with Mr. Robinson, said he was interested in “random nerdy stuff,” calling him a “massive Halo guy” and noting that he liked to play Call of Duty and other shooter games.

Mr. Rivera said he did not know whether Mr. Robinson had political views. According to the affidavit, investigators interviewed one of his family members, who said that Mr. Robinson had “become more political in recent years.”

Through interviews with a relative and a roommate, investigators also learned that the suspect had criticized Mr. Kirk not long before the shooting, Governor Cox said.

The messages on the casings are not much more revealing.

One of the messages, “Notices bulges OwO what’s this?,” is often used to mock participants in online role-play communities. Another message said, “If you read This, you are GAY Lmao,” its tone suggesting a kind of sophomoric insult humor common on internet message boards.

Then there was the message that read, “O Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Ciao, ciao!,” likely a reference to the popular Italian folk song “Bella Ciao.”Popularized as an antifascist anthem in Italy= after World War II, it resurfaced globally in recent years because of its inclusion in the hit Netflix series “Money Heist” and in video games, including the first-person shooter game Far Cry 6.

The song is still well-known as antifascist. It was sung as a protest last year by progressive members of the European Parliament during a visit by Viktor Orban, Hungary’s far-right prime minister.

But a number of people noted online on Friday that a version appears on a Spotify playlist meant for Groypers, the followers of Nick Fuentes, the white nationalist who occupies a political space to the right of, and in opposition to, Mr. Kirk.

As people online debated what the references meant, Mr. Brooking mused that the discussion might amount to a mission accomplished for a troll.

“The spectacle,” he said, “has to be the entire point.”

Unfired cartridges found with the gun that officials say was used to kill Charlie Kirk were engraved with a variety of messages, the authorities said on Friday, including many that suggest a familiarity with antifascist symbolism and the insider slang of video games and online culture that pervade the lives of young Americans.

BeLaU Spherules from an Interstellar Meteor Site in the Pacific Ocean are Not Common Terrestrial Materials

On June 14–28, 2023, I led an expedition to the Pacific Ocean to retrieve remnants of the meteor IM1, which was listed by NASA in the CNEOS catalog of fireballs and formally confirmed to be interstellar in origin by the U.S. Space Command in a formal letter to NASA, available here.

About 850 molten droplets, or spherules, were collected and brought to analysis in the state-of-the-art geochemistry laboratory of Professor Stein Jacobsen at Harvard University. The expedition will be featured in a Netflix documentary and a new book to appear in 2026.

About a tenth of the spherules retrieved from the expedition showed a highly enriched composition, with elements like beryllium (Be), lanthanum (La) and uranium (U) having an abundance of up to a thousand times the solar elemental composition.

These unique fragments were classified as “BeLaU”-spherules, and their complete elemental pattern did not match that of any well-studied solar system material.

Skeptics speculated that the BeLaU signature might represent either human-made coal ash or a tektite strewn field. Tektites are glassy rocks formed from terrestrial material melted and ejected by the hypervelocity impact of a large meteorite.

Last year, our research team conducted a detailed analysis that demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that the BeLaU composition is different from that of coal ash (see Figure 1c in our published paper here).

This week, the brilliant scientist Dr. Eugenia Hyung from Jacobsen’s laboratory, led a paper co-authored by four students, Stein and myself (accessible here), which reports precise elemental data for Australasian tektites to test the second speculation raised by the skeptics.

In short, our finding is that the Australasian tektites closely resemble the elemental abundance pattern of the upper continental crust of Earth for all the elements analyzed and are very different from the BeLaU composition.

Let us start with some background information. The entry of the interstellar meteor IM1 into the Earth’s atmosphere on January 8, 2014 resulted in three atmospheric detonations, which were detected by U.S. government satellite sensors 84 km north of Manus Island.

Our analysis of the event (published here) suggested an object of interstellar origin due to its arrival velocity of more than 45 kilometers per second, inspiring an ocean expedition to retrieve remnants of the object as discussed in a peer-reviewed paper here.

Among the retrieved fragments were 850 spherules that were 0.05–1.3 mm in diameter. The majority (~80%) of these fragments consisted of cosmic spherules, categorized into “S-type,” “I-type” and “G-type” spherules of undifferentiated composition and familiar chondritic origins.

A fraction of the materials that did not fit into the three archetypal categories were further classified as “D-type” spherules, named after their highly differentiated compositions in comparison to chondrites, characterized by their low magnesium to iron ratio.

About half of the D-type particles were further sub-categorized and named “BeLaU,” after their unusual composition — exhibiting particularly high abundances in elements such as Be, La, and U compared to known materials.

The “BeLaU” composition is of unknown origin, potentially from beyond the solar system (as published after peer-review in a paper accessible here).

Russia cautions Poland against drone ‘hysteria’

Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has dismissed accusations that Moscow intentionally violated Polish airspace earlier this week, insisting that claims of an “attack” on the NATO state were unsupported by evidence and hyped up by what he called the “European party of war.”

The Polish government said its military tracked at least 19 alleged violations over a seven-hour period on Wednesday, describing the episode as “deliberate” and “unprecedented.”

“Warsaw hastily pinned blame on Russia, without presenting any evidence whatsoever,” Nebenzia told the Security Council on Friday.

He argued that damage reported in eastern Poland was consistent with falling debris rather than an explosive strike, and noted that Polish officials themselves admitted no warheads had been found.

According to the Russian diplomat, the drones used in strikes against Ukrainian military targets on the night of September 10 had a range of no more than 700 kilometers – “making it physically impossible for them to reach Poland.”

He suggested that some of the reported devices may have malfunctioned or been disrupted by electronic warfare or GPS spoofing; Belarus had promptly warned Warsaw of possible risks.

Nebenzia said Moscow was willing to engage in professional dialogue with Polish officials to investigate the incident, but warned against “megaphone diplomacy” and what he described as “information campaigns” designed to prolong the Ukraine conflict.

The envoy also drew parallels to the 2022 Przewodow incident, in which two Poles were killed by a missile later acknowledged to have been launched by Ukraine.

He accused Kiev of seeking to “drag NATO into war” and said European leaders were once again using “hysterical outbursts” about Russian aggression to justify militarization.

“Who benefits from this artificially inflated hysteria?

Only the Kiev regime and the European party of war, who are desperately trying to derail the prospects for a Ukrainian settlement that began to take shape as a result of Russian-American contacts in August,” Nebenzia argued.

Multiple EU officials, including top diplomat Kaja Kallas, have called the incident a “deliberate violation.” NATO announced the launch of the “Eastern Sentry” operation to “bolster posture” along the eastern flank.

US President Donald Trump downplayed the incident on Thursday, suggesting it “could have been a mistake.” But Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk doubled down, insisting “it wasn’t.”

Anyone who doubts that narrative is “either the author or an accomplice of Russian propaganda,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated in Kiev on Friday.

Poland’s Defense Ministry has denied reports that its soldiers will be sent to Ukraine for training, clarifying that all joint military training exercises with Kiev on drone warfare will be conducted inside Poland.

The ministry issued the statement on Friday after Reuters and several media outlets in Ukraine suggested that Polish Armed Forces personnel would travel there to receive instruction on countering aerial threats.

“In response to questions regarding the location of planned drone training and cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian experts, we inform you that talks are currently underway between specialists from both countries on deepening cooperation in the field of unmanned and counter-drone systems,” the ministry wrote on X.

“It is expected that all such activities will take place on the territory of Poland,” the Defense Ministry emphasized.

The clarification came after Reuters reported on Thursday, citing a source familiar with the matter, that “Polish military representatives will undergo training on shooting down drones,” after Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky allegedly claimed Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk “had already agreed to send military representatives to Ukraine on the issue.”

Separately, the Defense Ministry also rejected rumors that Poles would soon be called up for service as part of a broader mobilization effort.

“It is untrue that thousands of Poles are to receive summons,” the ministry said, stressing that qualification planned for 2026 is a routine fitness assessment.

NATO kicks off military drill in response to ‘Russian violations’

NATO has announced a new military exercise intended to deter Russia, after Poland accused Moscow of violating its airspace with drones. The Kremlin has dismissed the allegations as unfounded, while accusing the bloc of fearmongering

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte claimed the drill, dubbed the ‘Eastern Sentry’, is aimed at bolstering the bloc’s posture along its eastern flank. The maneuvers will begin in the coming days and run for an undisclosed period, officials said.

Eastern Sentry is being presented as a response to “ongoing airspace violations, including numerous Russian drones that violated Poland’s airspace on September 10,” according to a NATO statement.

Denmark will send two F-16s and an anti-air warfare frigate, France will commit three Rafale jets, and Germany will deploy four Eurofighters to the drill. Britain has also expressed its willingness to contribute.

Polish officials have claimed at least 19 separate airspace violations took place and that air defenses downed up to four drones. Local authorities also reported some damage on the ground, but no casualties.

The Russian Defense Ministry has said its drone operations are directed at Ukrainian military targets and none were aimed at Poland.

The ministry added that “the maximum range of Russian drones that allegedly crossed the Polish border is less than 700 km,” adding it was ready to conduct consultations with Warsaw.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “the leadership of the EU and NATO accuse Russia of provocations on a daily basis, most often declining to offer any arguments.”

Peskov also insisted that Moscow “has never threatened” anyone, including European countries. “It was not Russia that moved its military infrastructure towards Europe, but Europe – which is a part of NATO, an instrument of confrontation and not peace and stability — that has always been moving it toward our borders.”

The future of humanity belongs to people who value love, friendship, and family, rather than egoistic loners suspended in cyberspace, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking at the United Cultures Forum in St. Petersburg on Friday, he discussed rapidly developing technology and AI, as well as the role human beings will play in the world to come.

“Artificial intelligence analyzes huge amounts of data and predicts trends,” Putin said.

“However, I believe that original solutions capable of leading to discoveries and breakthroughs in science, art, and the social sphere can only be given by the inspiration and genius of a human being, the true master and creator."

Humanity will need to “master” this new reality while still preserving the “roots that serve as its support,” he said.

"The world of the future is not a world of egoists, completely immersed in cyberspace, and not of loners living by the principle of ‘everyone for himself,’ but of people who still value love and friendship, cherish their loved ones, understand their inseparable connection with society and responsibility to it."

The Russian president added that it is no coincidence that so many of Russia’s cultural development programs are focused on its national “Family” project.

Both Russian identity and national character are “deeply rooted in family,” the president added.

Putin announced the launch of the “Family” national project early last year, aiming to support families with children and raise the country’s birth rate.

Moscow has since introduced a number of measures, such as increasingly large payouts for each successive child in a family, broader maternity benefits, and ongoing financial assistance to families.

Fire Breaks Out At Oil Refinery After "Terrorist" Attack By Drones: Russia

A fire broke out at the facilities of an oil company in Russia's Bashkortostan region following a drone attack on Saturday, the governor said.

"Today, the Bashneft company was subjected to a terrorist attack by aircraft-type drones," Radiy Khabirov wrote on Telegram.

One drone was shot down over the production site, sparking a fire, which was being put out, Khabirov said, adding that damage to the facility was limited and there were no casualties.

A second drone was also shot down, he said. Khabirov's Telegram post did not mention Ukraine.

Unverified video posted on local Telegram channels showed an object flying into the facility, followed by a large fireball.

The city of Ufa, where the oil facility is located, is some 1,400 kilometres (870 miles) from the border with Ukraine.
