Plea deal revoked (July 2024): After years of negotiations, KSM and two co-defendants—Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi—agreed to plead guilty in exchange for life imprisonment instead of a potential death sentence. Torture evidence: The defendants were subjected to "enhanced interrogation techniques," including waterboarding, while in CIA custody. A central issue has been whether evidence obtained under torture is admissible in court.

Case venue: The case was initially slated for a civilian court in New York but was moved to a military commission at Guantanamo Bay due to congressional action.

Victim families' divide: The possibility of a plea deal has split 9/11 families. Some opposed it, preferring a full trial to uncover more truth and potentially seek the death penalty. Others supported the deal as the most realistic path to a final resolution, given the endless delays.
