To review: right before Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney returned from a trip to Beijing and announced a new 5-point 'strategic partnership' to 'diversify our trade partnerships.' The agreements included slashing tariffs on Chinese EV imports from 100 percent to 6.1 percent for the first 49,000 units, in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola from 85 percent to 15 percent until at least the end of the year. Other exports, including Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crabs, and peas will also not be subject to Chinese anti-discrimination tariffs until at least the end of 2026.
A week later, Carney told the global elite at Davos resort that the "rules-based order" established by the United States and its allies following WW2 was fraying amid the current rivalry between China and America, so the "middle powers must act together because if we're not on the table, we're on the menu."
Carney said that for their survival, nations should no longer “go along to get along” with Trump.

Health Canada has announced that food made from genetically altered pigs is safe and nutritious to eat.
In a statement, Health Canada has said that the genetic altering was to make sure that pigs would be resistant to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome viruses (PRRSV), which, according to Health Canada, is "one of the most devastating classes of viruses affecting farmed pigs, representing significant losses for Canada's producers and higher prices at the store for Canadian consumers."
The application for gene-edited pigs was submitted by UK-based Genus PLC and Manitoba-based PIC Canada, Ltd.
Health Canada says that these gene-edited pigs are already deemed safe to eat in the United States, among other countries, and Genus will wait for further regulatory authorization in other markets. Continue…

State-owned Chinese corporation Zijin Gold International says it has reached an all-cash deal to buy Canadian company Allied Gold Corp. for $5.5 billion in cash.
Zijin Gold International is a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group, which is listed on the U.S. government’s Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List. The act restricts the import of goods in the United States from companies considered to be connected to the use of forced labour of China’s ethnic Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang region.
Zijin has offered $44 per share for the Toronto-based gold mining company, which owns and operates three mines in Africa and whose stock last closed at $41.75 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Jan. 23 and rose past $43 on the morning of Jan. 26.
Allied Gold Chairman and CEO Peter Marrone said the deal is a lucrative opportunity for his company to sell at an all-time high. Continue…

The Conservatives have faced added pressure in recent months following the departure of two MPs to the Liberal caucus, while Canada-wide polling has generally shown Poilievre trailing Prime Minister Mark Carney in personal popularity among the broader electorate. The Conservative Party’s constitution states that if its leader does not resign following a federal election loss, delegates are required to vote by secret ballot on whether the leader should continue on at the next national convention. Removing the bureaucratic burden on Canada’s doctors could free up the equivalent of more than 9,000 full-time physicians to see patients, a new report suggests.
Each hour spent on “unnecessary” paperwork results in extended wait times and a reduction in available appointments for patients, according to a report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
Removing this bureaucratic burden could potentially release the equivalent of 9,093 full-time physicians to attend to patients, researchers said.
Doctors dedicate more than one full day every week to administrative duties that don’t require their medical expertise, the report found. For individual doctors, this totals nearly 200 hours annually, which is equivalent to more than an entire month of work.
This results in a total loss of 19.8 million hours annually for Canadian physicians as a consequence of paperwork, the report estimates. Continue…

A federal employee placed on leave without pay for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine on religious grounds has been awarded back pay and $5,000 in damages by a labour tribunal.
Mathieu Lemay, a federal employee for 15 years, was working at the department of public safety and emergency preparedness when he was put on leave without pay after his application for vaccine exemption was rejected by his employer, according to a decision by a panel of the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board.
“I have concluded that the grievor is entitled to damages of $5,000 under s. 53(2)(e) of the [Canadian Human Rights Act],” adjudicator Christopher Rootham wrote in the decision, which was first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.
Rootham wrote that Lemay was entitled to the damages due to the “pain and suffering” he experienced over the “loss of dignity and self-worth that he incurred by being placed on leave without pay.”
Rootham also said the employer was required to provide backpay for the time Lemay was on leave, including the benefits he would have received if he had remained on the job.
