Kremlin reveals focus of Russian team for trilateral talks

The first meeting in the new format will discuss security issues only, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Trilateral talks between Russian, US, and Ukrainian officials this week will focus exclusively on security issues, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

The new format was agreed after Washington held bilateral talks with Kiev and Moscow earlier this week. Further meetings are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Abu Dhabi,though not all sessions will involve all three parties.

Russia has sent only military officials to the trilateral talks, Peskov said. “Last night they received instructions from the head of state and departed in the morning,” he added. The meeting will take place later on Friday or Saturday depending on logistics, the spokesman said.

Separately, civilian Russian and US officials will continue normalization talks, Peskov noted, adding that chief Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev is already in Abu Dhabi.

Peskov reiterated Moscow’s reluctance to discuss details of the sensitive talks publicly and repeated Russia’s stance that lasting peace requires withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass – a condition Kiev rejects.

The Ukrainian government hopes Western sanctions and its own long-range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure will weaken Moscow and halt its frontline advances. Russia says it prefers a diplomatic settlement but will continue its military campaign as long as Kiev refuses to accept reality.

Several Ukrainian cities faced severe energy shortages this month due to cold weather and infrastructure damage from mismanagement and Russian strikes. Moscow says its retaliatory attacks aim to disrupt production of Ukrainian kamikaze drones and missiles.

Phobos: Doomed Moon of Mars

This moon is doomed. Mars, the red planet named for the Roman god of war, has two tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos, whose names are derived from the Greek for Fear and Panic. These Martian moons may well be captured asteroids originating in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter or perhaps from even more distant reaches of our Solar System. The larger moon, Phobos, is indeed seen to be a cratered, asteroid-like object in this stunning color image from the robotic Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which can image objects as small as 10 meters. But Phobos orbits so close to Mars - about 5,800 kilometers above the surface compared to 400,000 kilometers for our Moon - that gravitational tidal forces are dragging it down. In perhaps 50 million years, Phobos is expected to disintegrate into a ring of debris.

WATCH: New Video Shows Struggle Leading Up to Deadly Minnesota Shooting by Border Patrol Agent

A video circulating on social media shows a new angle on the shooting that occurred in South Minneapolis on Saturday morning. The new video shows the suspect attempting to push an agent away from two protesters, later grabbing and pulling at one of them. Within seconds of Border Patrol agents struggling to subdue the suspect, shots ring out.

Despite the deafening sound of whistles being blown to disrupt the agents from performing their duties safely, at least one agent can be heard on the video screaming, “gun, gun, gun,” before approximately ten shots can be heard. The video continues with several protestors in the crowd yelling, “What the f%$# did you just do!”

The video was posted on X by Drop Site News. The account associated with the post identifies as an independent news site located on Substack.

The video matches an earlier video of the shooting taken from a different angle. The newly released video taken by a protester on the scene shows the moments before the shooting, where the suspect appears to be attempting to direct traffic in the middle of the roadway.

According to the post by Drop Site News, the suspect is a “legal observer,” however, that information has not been corroborated by authorities. Before the shooting begins, the suspect, wearing a brown hooded jacket and a black ball cap, appears to be attempting to keep protesters out of the roadway. The dialogue between the suspect and protesters cannot be distinguished due to the loud whistles being blown and profanities being shouted at the agents.

Dueling press conferences were held shortly after the shooting by the City of Minneapolis and by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During Saturday’s DHS press conference, Border Patrol Chief and operational commander for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Gregory Bovino, began by saying that federal law enforcement officers have been under constant attack for weeks. “This morning was no different,” Bovino added.

According to Bovino, agents in Minneapolis were engaged in an immigration enforcement operation targeting Jose Huerta Chuma, a criminal illegal alien whose arrest record includes domestic assault, disorderly conduct, and driving without a valid license. The unidentified suspect approached U.S. Border Patrol agents while in possession of a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, according to Bovino. Chief Bovino went on to say the suspect violently resisted as agents attempted to disarm him, resulting in the suspect being shot as agents feared for their lives and the safety of fellow officers.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, Minneapolis officials held a press conference in which Mayor Jacob Frey made no mention of the suspect carrying a weapon. In that press conference, Frey was joined at the podium by Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara and the city’s Emergency Management Director Rachel Sayre.

From the start, the trio of city officials acknowledged they had few details of the shooting but were quick to condemn the federal agents involved in the shooting of the armed man early Saturday morning.

Florida Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost was allegedly assaulted while attending a party during the Sundance Film Festival.

On Friday, Jan. 23, Frost, 29, attended the talent agency CAA’s Sundance Film Festival Celebration at Park City’s High West Saloon in Utah, Variety and CNN reported. He claimed in an Instagram post that he was racially harassed and physically assaulted during the event.

“Last night, I was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival who told me that Trump was going to deport me before he punched me in the face,” Frost wrote on Instagram on Jan. 24. “He was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off. The individual was arrested and I am okay.”

“Thank you to the venue security and Park City PD for assistance on this incident,” Frost concluded.

The Park City Police Department (PCP) has confirmed that a suspect, whom they've identified as Christian Young, assaulted Frost and another woman at the private party, per CNN. Young “unlawfully” entered the event and carried out the alleged attack after he was initially turned away, according to Variety.

Frost included a screenshot of the Variety report about the incident in his Instagram post.

In the report, a source at CAA alleged to the outlet that the racially charged incident took place in the restroom of the High West Saloon, as Young told people that he was proud to be “white.” He then allegedly punched Frost as he left the bathroom.

The ppl working were more fringe but that area of Mpls was kind of a haven for the blue hair pierced who at the time weren’t a big deal. The Trump administration is taking a 10% stake in USA Rare Earth as part of a $1.6 billion debt-and-equity investment package aimed at helping the company develop a domestic mine and magnet facility, two sources familiar with the deal told Reuters.

The deal and a separate $1 billion private investment will be unveiled on Monday and Oklahoma-based USA Rare Earth will host a morning conference call with investors to discuss the terms, according to one of the sources who was briefed on the plans.

The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. USA Rare Earth declined to comment.

China is the largest global processor of rare earths, a group of 17 minerals used to make a range of electronics and military equipment. The U.S. produces only small volumes of rare earths, which has sparked a push in recent years from Washington to increase output.

USA Rare Earth has been developing a mine in Sierra Blanca, Texas, with Texas Mineral Resources — slated to open by 2028 and which has a magnet manufacturing facility in Stillwater, Oklahoma — that is expected to launch later this year.

As part of the USA Rare Earth investment, Washington will receive 16.1 million shares in the company along with warrants for an additional 17.6 million shares, according to the sources. Both would be priced at $17.17 a share, near where the company’s stock traded earlier this month.

The Financial Times first reported on the investment.

The deal is the latest move by the Trump administration to move into the critical minerals space after taking equity stakes last year in MP Materials, Lithium Americas and Trilogy Metals.

A senior Trump official said last month that the administration was planning more “historic deals” with the U.S. mining sector to increase production of lithium, rare earths and other critical minerals used in national defense, artificial intelligence and other related areas.

USA Rare Earth has hired Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm chaired by Brandon Lutnick, the son of U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, to help with fundraising efforts, one of the sources said.
