To lie, the mind has to do a few steps:
Notice the truth (what actually happened or what you really think).
Predict the consequences of telling it (good, bad, neutral).
Generate an alternative version that seems believable.
Inhibit the true response and choose the false one.
Keep track of the lie later so you don’t contradict yourself.
That “inhibit truth + construct alternative” process relies heavily on the prefrontal cortex (planning, impulse control, self‑control) and working memory. It’s literally more work for the brain than just saying what’s true.

What the brain is doing
Prefrontal cortex: suppresses the truth and manages the made‑up story.
Amygdala: fires with guilt/fear when we lie, especially early on.
Reward system (dopamine): if the lie “works” (we avoid trouble or gain something), that mini‑reward reinforces lying as a strategy.
If someone lies a lot, the amygdala’s emotional “ouch” response can diminish; lying starts to feel easier and less wrong, which is one reason some people become chronic liars.

From each prisoner’s point of view, thinking alone:
“If the other stays silent, I’m better off betraying (I go free instead of 1 year).
If the other betrays, I’m still better off betraying (5 years instead of 10–20).”
So for each person, betraying looks safer no matter what the other does. That makes “defect” the individually “rational” move. But when both follow that logic, they both betray and end up with 5 years each, which is worse than if they both had just trusted each other and stayed silent (1 year each).
