Georgia high school teacher dies after being run over by teen in prank gone wrong
A Georgia teenager is facing a homicide charge after a running over a high school teacher in an attempt to flee the scene of a prank on Friday night.
Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering, according to a statement from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. Wallace was allegedly with four other people when they“rolled”the trees with toilet paper outside a North Hall High School teacher’s residence.
The group got into two vehicles when Jason Hughes, a math teacher, exited the house, the statement said.
“As Wallace began driving his pickup truck on North Gate Drive, Hughes tripped and fell into the road and was run over by the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.
The teens stopped and attempted to help Hughes after he was hit. Deputies arrived at the scene at11:40 p.m. and Hughes was taken to a hospital by the fire department.

After Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart signed off on the Biden administration’s illegal raid on Mar-a-Lago, conservatives flagged the former prosecutor’s work for Jeffrey Epstein.
Reinhart had begun setting up his legal practice while the Epstein plea deal was being negotiated and he went to work for Epstein the day after he left the U.S. Attorney’s office and approximately half a year after the dubious federal plea deal had been handed to Epstein.
A complaint filed by a lawyer for the victims to then U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer, a Janet Reno protege out of the Clinton administration, claimed that, “within months after the non-prosecution agreement was signed”, Reinhart opened a criminal defense law office on the same floor as Epstein’s lead criminal defense lawyer that was located next door to Epstein’s ‘Florida Science Foundation’ which the sex offender used to bring in girls while on ‘work release’ from prison.
The letter charged that Reinhart’s work for Epstein involved “the exact same crimes and same evidence being reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s office when he was employed there.”
But the media shot back that Reinhart was a “respected figure” and the former prosecutor claimed that he had not been involved in Epstein’s criminal case and had “never learned any confidential, non-public information about the Epstein matter”. However the complaint cited statements from the U.S. Attorney’s office that he had “learned confidential, non-public information about the Epstein matter” while working in the office and had “discussed the Epstein matter with another Assistant U.S. Attorney working on the Epstein matter.”
Reinhart told the Miami Herald that he didn’t represent Epstein, only Epstein’s employees, his pilot, and Sarah Kellen, Epstein’s ‘scheduler’, described as an ‘assistant’ to Ghislaine Maxwell, who allegedly kept the information of the girls being brought to Epstein, and Nadia Marcinkova, an Epstein associate who allegedly participated in sexual acts with at least one underage girl, and whom some have described as Epstein’s “sex slave.”.
Considering the nature of the ‘employees’, this wasn’t much of a defense. Kellen and Marcinkova had been listed as “unindicted co-conspirators” in the federal deal. A deposition in the Epstein Files of a woman whose name was redacted and was represented by Reinhart has him encouraging her to plead the Fifth to virtually any question about Epstein.
But it gets worse.
The release of the Epstein Files exposed a direct exchange between Epstein and Reinhart in which Epstein sent Reinhart an email asking him to find the probation officer of a “federal absconder”.Reinheart did not ask Epstein why he wanted to locate this particular woman.
Despite being well aware of Epstein’s history and legal troubles, Reinhart emailed the sex offender to say that “my inside source is waiting to hear back from knowledgeable people.”
Who was Reinhart’s “inside source”? The terminology implies that Reinhart wasn’t working through the conventional system, but relying on inside favors from people in the Justice Department. If the email is real, it also shows that Reinhart was actually working for Epstein directly and that he did not tell the truth when he claimed to only be representing his employees.
In one email to Reinhart and his lawyer, Epstein set out what appeared to be an argument for favorable release conditions including “BARRY LANNA ( NO VICTIMS)”. This was a reference to his two Palm Beach prosecutors, Barry Krischer, who had aggressively gone after Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, while giving Epstein a pass, and Lanna Belohlavek.
In another email, Epstein mentioned that “the New York d.a. would like to talk to either barry or lanna to get their sense of the level of sex offender requirements.” The New York DA’s office under Cy Vance Jr, the son of a Carter administration figure, would shock the judge by illegally taking Epstein off the sex offender list.
The insistence that there were “no victims” was important. Any victims would push Epstein inescapably onto the sex offender list and destroy the comeback image he was working to cultivate. Some of the powerful men who would later associate with Epstein had repeated the argument that they believed that there were no victims and it was just a ‘prostitution’ issue.

When a drone struck a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus on the night of 1st March, the UK was forced to reconsider its hands-off approach to America’s war with Iran.
In a recorded TV address earlier that evening, Sir Keir Starmer said he had agreed to a US request to use British military bases for “defensive” strikes on Iranian missile sites, adding “British lives” had been put at risk. By Tuesday, the government decided it would scramble a warship, HMS Dragon, to the eastern Mediterranean.
But the intended display of naval might has yet to take place, with the warship still in Portsmouth where it is expected to remain until later this week. It’s a wait that has left MoD officials “fuming” and exposed the shortcomings of previous financially-motivated decisions – including agreements with contractors to not work out of hours.
Under the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, which handed independence to Cyprus, the UK has a legal obligation to ensure the island’s security. But the Cypriot government has said it was “disappointed” in Britain’s response to the strike and has been forced to draft in help from France.
It is also thought to be the first time since 1980 that no Royal Navy ships have been stationed in the Gulf after years of scaling back British presence in the region. Admiral Lord Alan West, who served as First Sea Lord between 2002 and 2006, previously described the decision to bring home the last remaining vessel as a “terrible error”.

Iran’s Kharg Island, a small but strategically vital strip of land nestled in the waters of the northern Persian Gulf, has been left untouched by U.S. and Israeli forces even as the Middle East conflictenters its second week.
The coral island, which is located about 15 miles off the coast of mainland Iran, serves as the centerpiece for Iran’s oil industry.
It is estimated that around 90% of the country’s crude exports pass through it before tankers then travel through the Strait of Hormuz. The island is also said to have a loading capacity of roughly 7 million barrels per day.
Kharg Island’s economic importance to Iran makes it particularly vulnerable to the threat of military action, although analysts say that any attempt to seize it would likely require a ground troop operation, which the U.S. appears reluctant to undertake.
An attack would also likely prompt further energy market volatility at a time when oil prices have soared to more than $100 a barrel.
Seizing the island “would cut off Iran’s oil lifeline,” which is essential for the regime, according to Petras Katinas, a research fellow in climate, energy and defense at RUSI, a London-based defense think tank.
“Of course, with shipping via the Strait of Hormuz now stopped, they cannot sell oil anyway, but looking ahead, seizure would give the US leverage during negotiations, no matter which regime is in power after the military operation ends,” Katinas told CNBC by email.
“Yet, seizure, would require a ground troop operation, which this administration seems hesitant to undertake. At least for now,” he added.
Crude futures climbed to their highest level since mid-2022 on Monday after the U.S. and Israel launched a fresh wave of strikes across Iran over the weekend.
The attacks struck several Iranian fuel sites, including oil storage depots, signaling a new phase of the war as the sprawling Middle East crisis continues into its tenth day.
International benchmark Brent crude futures
with May delivery traded over 13% higher at $104.85 per barrel on Monday morning, paring earlier gains, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures
with April delivery were last seen 12.6% higher at $102.42.

“If President Trump were to decide to seize this pivotal hub, it would deal a significant blow to the Iranian regime, as it would deprive them of a critical source of revenue. Such a move would be reminiscent of the U.S. intervention in Venezuela at the beginning of the year, when it effectively took control of the country’s oil sector,” Tamas Varga, an oil analyst at brokerage PVM, told CNBC By email.
“While it might suggest the resumption of Iranian oil exports—under U.S. supervision, of course, and only if the Strait reopens—it would at the same time remain vulnerable to drone attacks from within Iran. An eventual U.S. occupation of the island would further complicate an already complex situation,” he added.
Typically, about 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz, but shipping traffic has all but halted through this key maritime corridor since the war started late last month.
U.S. President Donald Trump may be tempted to order U.S. forces to try to seize Kharg Island for several reasons, according to Marc Gustafson, former head of the White House Situation Room, who previously served under presidents Trump, Joe Biden and Barack Obama.
These include the opportunity for Trump to claim a “big PR win,” the chance to give U.S. troops a natural barrier from mainland Iran, and the fact that it fits with the president’s push to secure maximum leverage over the Iranian regime.
Gustafson, who now works as the senior director of analysis at Eurasia Group, said that any such operation would be fraught with risk, however.
An attempt to seize the island would require U.S. troops on the ground and likely see it become a multi-week target for Iranian drones, Gustafson said in a LinkedIn post last week.
He also warned it could push oil prices up even further and Tehran may even consider an act of self-sabotage to destroy the oil pipeline that feeds it.
“There is one concept or one dimension of this that no one seemingly has mentioned, which is Kharg Island,” Jan van Eck, CEO of VanEck Funds, told CNBC’s “Power Lunch” on March 2.
“It’s where 90% of Iran’s oil gets exported out of — that is a choke point. And if you think that Trump just follows the same playbook that he did in Venezuela. What did he do? He cut off their oil exports, their hard currency, and I think he is going to want that leverage point going forward,” Van Eck said.

The FBI executed search warrants and detained residents at two separate homes – one in Middletown Township’s Langhorne section and the other in Newtown Township – Sunday evening as part of an investigation into incendiary devices in New York City.
The raids took place around 6:20 p.m. at residences on Tina Drive in Middletown Township and Clymer Street in Newtown Township.

The federal investigation stems from a Saturday afternoon confrontation during dueling protests near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohron Mamdani.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Balat ignited a device and threw it toward a group of people after an anti-Muslim protester deployed pepper spray. The device struck a barrier and extinguished in a crosswalk just feet from police officers.

What's going on inside the head of this nebula? Dubbed the Exposed Cranium Nebula for its similarity to the human brain, what created the nebula remains a mystery. One thought is that the Cranium Nebula, also known as PMR 1, is a planetary nebula surrounding a white dwarf star. In this mode, the outer atmosphere was expelled when the original Sun-like star ran out of central nuclear fuel and contracted. A competing thought is that the central star is much more massive, possibly a Wolf-Rayet star, that is ejecting gas and dust via turbulent stellar winds. Adding to the intrigue is the dark vertical central division and the thin outer gaseous shell. The featured image was taken by the Webb Space Telescope in mid- infrared light, while a second image, included as a rollover, is in near-infrared. Future observations may reveal if this brainy system will quietly just fade from view or, many years from now, suddenly erupt in a powerful supernova.

The FBI is expanding its criminal probe into suspected election irregularities, secretly obtaining a large tranche of voting records from Arizona’s largest county with a recent grand jury subpoena, multiple people familiar with the probe told Just the News.
The sources, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the grand jury probe, said FBI agents are receiving gigabytes of electronic election data from Maricopa County, about a month after the bureau first disclosed an investigation into election irregularities by raiding a warehouse near Atlanta and seizing ballots from the 2020 election conducted in Fulton County, Georgia’s largest metropolis.
Election irregularities in Arizona and elsewhere
The subpoena comes five years after the GOP-led Arizona state Senate conducted a lengthy investigation into the 2020 election and concluded there were significant irregularities.
More recently, the bureau was alerted to a report filed by Republican and Democrat election observers who believed they observed irregularities in November 2024 at a warehouse in Arizona where blank and filled-out absentee ballots were observed in the same location, according to the sources.
Congress has never released the report from the staffers who were sent to observe the 2024 election in Maricopa County, which includes Arizona’s largest city of Phoenix.

The sources, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the grand jury probe, said FBI agents are receiving gigabytes of electronic election data from Maricopa County, about a month after the bureau first disclosed an investigation into election irregularities by raiding a warehouse near Atlanta and seizing ballots from the 2020 election conducted in Fulton County, Georgia’s largest metropolis.
Election irregularities in Arizona and elsewhere
The subpoena comes five years after the GOP-led Arizona state Senate conducted a lengthy investigation into the 2020 election and concluded there were significant irregularities.
More recently, the bureau was alerted to a report filed by Republican and Democrat election observers who believed they observed irregularities in November 2024 at a warehouse in Arizona where blank and filled-out absentee ballots were observed in the same location, according to the sources.
Congress has never released the report from the staffers who were sent to observe the 2024 election in Maricopa County, which includes Arizona’s largest city of Phoenix.
But House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil recently hinted at the significance of the report in an interview with the Just the News, No Noise television show.
“We’re digging back through those reports that were submitted by our election observers that were deployed across the country,” Steil said. “This is where working hand in glove with other federal government agencies is so important.
“We have reports documenting instances that occurred in Arizona and across the country, and we are reviewing those in real time and working hand in glove with federal partners to make sure that the law was followed in every jurisdiction in the country,” he added.
FBI likely to expand ballot-related searches elsewhere
The sources said the joint report filed by one GOP and one Democratic observer who were in Maricopa County on election night 2024 included photos of the ballots and storage facility, which they described as heavily guarded and having ballots from multiple states’ elections.
Officials said that report was one of several foundations for the subpoena executed by the FBI in recent days.
Sources said the FBI is likely to execute searches and subpoenas in other states beyond Georgia and Arizona in coming weeks.
The bureau has been coy about the full extent of its probe, but the unsealed affidavit from its raid of Fulton County’s election center made clear the bureau is looking at possible violation of federal laws that require election administrators to follow state laws when sending out and counting ballots.
FBI Special Agent Hugh Raymond Evans told the court the bureau has "substantiated" some major irregularities in how votes were counted in Georgia's largest urban area in the aftermath of the 2020 election and is probing whether those failures were intentional efforts to violate federal election law.
"Some of those allegations have been disproven while some of those allegations have been substantiated, including through admissions by Fulton County," Evans wrote. "This warrant application is part of an FBI criminal investigation into whether any of the improprieties were intentional acts that violated federal criminal laws."
Many of the substantiated allegations in Fulton County were previously reported by Just the News over the last five years based on its review of ballot records.

Audit suggested more than 200,000 ballots with mismatched signatures
Concerns about election counting in Arizona, and specifically Maricopa County, stretch back more than a decade as the state moved to mostly mail-in ballots. In the old days, Democrats were the early complainants.
More recently, Republicans like President Donald Trump, former gubernatorial and Senate candidate Kari Lake and now U.S. Rep. Abe Hamadeh have raised concerns about the state’s ballot distribution and counting systems.
The Arizona Senate conducted a massive audit after the 2020 election affected by COVID-19 and concluded there were irregularities. One of the Senate’s most stunning findings was an estimate that more than 200,000 ballots with mismatched signatures may have been counted without being reviewed, or "cured" in Maricopa County, more than eight times the 25,000 signature mismatches requiring curing that had been acknowledged by the county.

The audit did little to resolve disputes, as Democrats and Maricopa County officials argue the concerns are overblown while Republicans say they fear there are still vulnerabilities. Those clashes continue into planning for the 2026 election.
Recently, Maricopa County’s new Election Recorder Justin Heap and the county Board of Supervisors have feuded over planning for the next election, including via litigation.
The Phoenix-based board passed a new draft of a Shared Services Agreement (SSA) last April, a formal contract detailing how the Recorder’s Office and the board will perform election administrative duties under Arizona law. After receiving the SSA agreement, Heap made 170 different changes to it and sent it back to the board, calling it his “final offer,” according to a Maricopa County news release.
However, Heap and the board could not come to an agreement on the SSA, so he filed a lawsuit against the board two months later. Heap said the lawsuit sought to “reclaim the legal authority afforded to the County Recorder under Arizona law and ensure that [his] office is not further deprived of the resources necessary to perform those duties to the fullest extent possible.”
On Feb. 17, the board passed a new SSA.
The new SSA permitted Heap to have full control over early-voting plans, while the board kept control over funding, staffing, contracts and Election Day operations.
“Since Mr. Heap has not provided a serious response to our latest SSA offer, we felt it was important to state publicly and transparently how we will go about navigating some of the most contentious issues between our respective offices so that we can ensure elections run smoothly and securely for Maricopa County voters,” Board Chair Kate Brophy McGee said.
The following week, board members sent a letter to Heap with their proposed early-voting plan despite giving him full control over it. “The Board of Supervisors strongly supports maintaining a comprehensive early in-person program consistent with prior practices,” the letter said.
Heap responded to the letter, saying that he had “serious concerns” about the board’s early voting plan. He said the proposal “makes voting inconvenient and inaccessible for a large number of Maricopa County voters.”
He told board members that he rejected their proposal because Arizona law “expressly authorizes the Recorder to establish early voting locations.”

Qatari PM warns Iran it has made 'dangerous miscalculation'
Qatar’s prime minister has lashed out at Iran for its “dangerous miscalculation” of retaliatory strikes on Gulf countries, describing a sense of “betrayal” among Tehran’s neighbours.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani was speaking after Qatar had suffered several missile and drone attacks by the Tehran regime along with our countries across the Middle East. A retaliation to US-Israeli strikes, which has sparked an ongoing 10-day conflict in the region.
Speaking to Sky News, he said the country was in a “very difficult period” and that Doha was feeling a “big sense of betrayal” following Iran’s actions.
“Just an hour after the start of the war, Qatar and other Gulf countries have been attacked. We made clear that we were not going to take part in any wars against our neighbours.”
Qatar is just one of many countries to have been attacked by Iranian forces, with hundreds of missiles and drones launched at targets in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, leaving thousands stranded abroad and damaging civilian targets, including hotels and airports.
“All the attacks on the Gulf countries – we never expected this from our neighbour,” al-Thani said. “We have always tried to preserve a good relationship with Iran, but the justifications and pretexts they are using are completely rejected.”
He said the “miscalculation by the Iranians to attack Gulf countries has destroyed everything”, but that Doha will “continue to seek de-escalation” – and also called on the US to reduce tensions in the region.
Last week, loud blasts were heard in Doha as Tehran launched several attacks on the Qatari capital. Qatar’s foreign ministry said at the time that Iran would “pay a price” for the attacks. Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and Shahed drones have all been shot down in Qatari airspace over the past week.
Turkey became the first Nato member to come under attack last week, when Nato air and missile defences sprang into action to shoot down a ballistic missile travelling in the direction of Turkey. A Turkish official later said the missile had been aimed at an unspecified military base in Cyprus – which hosts British bases – and had veered off course.
The attacks across the region have had a severely destabilising impact on the global economy, with crude oil prices surging past $115 (£86.47) a barrel on Monday as fuel shortages sparked rationing and violence in import-dependent countries in South Asia.
In Sialkot, Pakistan, a man opened fire at a petrol station on Saturday after workers refused to fill jerry cans during panic buying, killing one worker and critically injuring two others. Separately, a man was killed in Karachi in another fuel queue altercation
In Bangladesh, authorities on Monday brought forward university Eid holidays as an emergency measure to cut electricity use and ease fuel pressure after Qatar suspended LNG deliveries.

Despite decades of statin use costing approximately $25 billion annually in America alone, heart disease remains the leading cause of death, suggesting the cholesterol hypothesis that drives statin prescriptions is fundamentally flawed.
Studies show that lowering cholesterol with statins does not reduce heart disease, and yet these findings are ignored while statin guidelines are created by experts paid by pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Malcolm Kendrick’s clotting model provides a superior explanation for heart disease: atherosclerotic plaques result from repeated damage to blood vessel linings, which the body repairs with layers of clots.
The medical establishment dismisses widespread reports of statin injuries as “nocebo effects,” paralleling how covid-19 vaccine injuries were dismissed as “anxiety,” despite extensive evidence corroborating the injuries.
The actual causes of heart disease – fine particulate matter from pollution and cigarettes, lead exposure, chronic stress and endothelial damage – receive minimal research funding because effective interventions cannot be patented and sold as expensive pharmaceuticals like statins.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Llama about immigration, climate policy, welfare, gender ideology, or censorship, and the answers may differ in tone, but the underlying ideology is always the same. Multiple studies now find that leading language models lean left on contested political questions, often favouring progressive social assumptions and more interventionist economic positions. Researchers in Germany found strong alignment with left-wing parties across major models. Another study found instruction-tuned models were generally more left-leaning. A third concluded that larger models often become more politically skewed, not less. That is a serious problem for a technology sold as an impartial guide to information. If the tools increasingly used to explain the world already tilt in one direction, the question is no longer whether bias exists, but how far it shapes what millions of users come to regard as neutral truth.
It’s Not Just a Theory Anymore
For years, concerns about political bias in AI were brushed aside as anecdotal. That argument has weakened sharply. A 2025 study examining AI-based voting advice tools and large language models ahead of Germany’s federal election found that the models showed strong alignment, averaging more than 75 per cent, with left-wing parties, while their alignment with centre-right parties was below 50 per cent and with right-wing parties around 30 per cent. The authors warned that systems presented as neutral informational tools were in fact producing substantially biased outputs.
Another 2025 paper testing popular models against Germany’s Wahl-O-Mat framework reached a similar conclusion. It found a bias towards left-leaning parties and reported that this tendency was most dominant in larger models. The study’s title was blunt enough on its own: Large Means Left.
A separate theory-grounded analysis based on 88,110 responses across 11 commercial and open models found that political bias measures can vary by prompt, but that instruction-tuned systems were generally more left-leaning. The important point is not that every model behaves identically. It is that the overall pattern keeps recurring across methods, datasets, and research teams.

As The Telegraph reports, Ron Hubbard, owner of Atlas Survival Shelters, reports being “inundated with calls” since the conflict erupted, with enquiries spiking “tenfold.”

He added: “If the Americans want you dead, you’re dead. I don’t think any bunker in the world can protect you from an American that wants to kill you.”
The boom extends globally, with Hubbard’s new Dubai office fielding urgent requests after Iranian missiles hit the city.

Spectacular fireball over Europe sends meteorite crashing through roof of German home
March 9, 2026
A meteorite has crashed through the roof of a house in the city of Koblenz in the west of Germany after a spectacular fireball lit up the night sky above western Europe on Sunday evening, March 8.
More than 2,800 sightings of the fireball have been reported to the International Meteor Organization (IMO), with dozens of video recordings having been uploaded on social media.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple explosions as the space rock disintegrated in the atmosphere, showering fragments across the western German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
According to available reports, multiple fragments of the meteorite have already been found in Koblenz's Güls district, which will allow researchers to determine where the meteorite came from.
Although damage to multiple houses has been reported by German media, no one has been injured in the incident. The largest discovered fragment reportedly pierced a hole the size of a soccer ball into one of the roofs.
Observers from France, Belgium and the Netherlands have also reported the sighting.
"A meteor just decomposed in front of my eyes," one user shared on X, together with an image showing a white smoky streak on the darkening sky.
Images of alleged meteorite fragments were published by the German Bild newspaper on Monday morning, March 9.
Millions of space rock fragments cross Earth's path every year. Most of those space rocks evaporate in the atmosphere during the fiery entry. On a clear night, several meteors streak across the sky in an hour.
Around 10,000 meteorites impact Earth's surface every year, but only a few hundred of those are recovered, most ending their lives at the bottom of the world's oceans.

Hiroshima-Scale Explosions that Nobody Warns Us About, Occur Every Year in Earth’s Atmosphere

Every year, an explosion with an energy output comparable to the Hiroshima atomic bomb occurs in our atmosphere without advance warning (as reviewed here).
But in contrast to the historic Hiroshima explosion on August 6, 1945, these annual explosions are not mentioned as breaking news because they involve a natural rock that measures a few meters in diameter which burns up in a fireball at an altitude of 30–50 kilometers.
In contrast to the atomic bomb which was intentionally detonated 600 meters above the city Hiroshima in order to maximize damage, the high altitude of meteor explosions makes most of them unimpactful for life on Earth.
Nevertheless, under rare circumstances some small meteoritic fragments trigger reported damage on the ground once every few years.
For example, on June 26, 2025 a meteorite, later determined to be from a one-ton, 4.56-billion-year-old rock, tore through the roof of a house near Atlanta.
The fragment was small, about the size of a cherry tomato, but it left a hole in the roof, went through air ducts, and slammed into the concrete floor.
In May 2023, a metallic meteorite, approximately the size of a grapefruit, crashed through the roof of a home, causing minor structural damage to the roof and floor but no injuries.
Given that house cover only a small fraction of Earth, numerous such incidents must occur every year over uninhabited areas.
Those who worry about the risk of being hit by a cosmic impactor from the sky, might wonder whether we could receive an advance warning about this risk. After all, we are used to weather forecasts which warn us about the risk from droplets of rain falling from the sky.
Could we imagine a future in which the daily forecast will also include a warning about a small meteor impact on a particular region? Obviously, no umbrella can withstand a meteor impact, but residents in the risk area might choose to leave the region in advance of the impact.
A new paper posted here, shows that the NSF-DOE Rubin Observatory will be able to warn earthlings about 1 in 25 of all imminent impactors larger than a meter, a few days in advance.
The paper simulated the expected discovery performance for imminent impactors using 343 meter-size objects previously recorded in NASA’s CNEOS database as fireballs in the Earth’s atmosphere.
The simulations indicate that the Rubin Observatory will discover at least one meter-size imminent impactors per year, representing about 4% of all Earth impactors larger than a meter in diameter and almost doubling the current discovery rate of imminent impactors.
The median time of discovery is 1.57 days before impact. The spatial distribution of the 11 previously discovered imminent impactors is biased towards the Northern Hemisphere, where the observatories that discovered them are located.
By observing the southern sky, the Rubin observatory will provide an important counterpart to existing asteroid surveys which are primarily located in the Northern Hemisphere.
Aside from information about the Solar system, material falling from the sky could also educate us about the makeup of our neighbors’ yards. About one in a thousand impactors might be interstellar in origin.
Here’s hoping that among the interstellar meteors, we might find one day a Voyager-like meteor that was launched by an extraterrestrial civilization on the other side of the Milky-Way galaxy billions of years ago.
Such an object would resemble an odd tennis ball that came from a neighbor’s yard. Meteor experts might respond to it like cave dwellers confronted for the first time with a cell phone, saying: “This is a rock of a type that we had never seen before.”
