Hyenas
Long‑term data from spotted hyenas show that infanticide accounts for about 24% of juvenile deaths, and roughly 1 in 10 hyena cubs born in the studied population are killed this way.
All observed killers in that study were adult females, usually higher‑ranking than the victim’s mother, and sometimes the dead cubs are eaten by the killer, the killer’s offspring, the mother, or other group members.

1 Kings 3:16–28, often called “the Judgment of Solomon.” Here’s the gist in simple form:
Two women who live in the same house each have a baby boy, born days apart. One night, one baby dies—his mother accidentally lies on him in her sleep. She then secretly swaps the dead child for the living one. In the morning, the other woman discovers the dead baby beside her, realizes it isn’t her son, and accuses the first woman of stealing her living child. With no witnesses, they bring the dispute to King Solomon.
Solomon listens, then calls for a sword and orders: “Cut the living child in two, and give half to each woman.” One woman agrees: “He shall be neither mine nor yours—cut him!” The other cries out, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby; do not kill him.” Solomon then rules: give the living child to the woman who was willing to give him up to save his life, because she is the true mother.
The “proverbial” takeaway people quote is that true motherhood is revealed in the willingness to lose your claim rather than see the child harmed—the real mother would rather let the child live with someone else than see him “cut in two.”
