A driver plowed a black Suzuki Swift into a crowd of pedestrians in the heart of the UK’s Derby city centre late Saturday night, injuring “numerous” people, some seriously, in what police are describing as a “major incident.”

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Friar Gate area, a popular area filled with bars, restaurants, and shops.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found injured people lying on the pavement, blood on the ground, and bystanders screaming for help.

Paramedics treated victims at the scene before transporting many to local hospitals.

Derbyshire Police confirmed that a man in his 30s was arrested shortly after the incident and remains in custody.

Officers described the investigation as being in its early stages and emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public. Continue…

Canada’s House of Commons passed Bill C-9, the so-called “Combating Hate Act,” in a 186-137 vote Wednesday night.

Liberals and the Bloc voted in lockstep to strip away long-standing protections for religious speech under the Criminal Code. Conservatives, the NDP, and the Greens opposed it. The bill now heads to the Senate.

The bill expands Canada’s hate speech laws and introduces new criminal penalties for what the government defines as the “willful promotion of hatred” against protected groups.

This “anti-hate” legislation guts the good-faith religious defense in Section 319 of the Criminal Code. That defense used to shield Canadians from prosecution when they expressed opinions “based on a belief in a religious text.”

Two suspected Ukrainian drones have crashed in Finland, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reported, conjecturing that the UAVs were launched as part of Kiev’s latest attacks on neighboring Russia’s Leningrad Region.

In a post on X on Sunday, Orpo wrote that the “drones have strayed into Finnish territory,” and that the incident was being investigated by local authorities and the Defense Forces.

The Finnish prime minister characterized the “territorial violation as a very serious matter,” as quoted by Yle News.

Later in the day, in an X post of his own, President Alexander Stubb revealed that “one of the drones has been confirmed to be Ukrainian in origin.” The Finnish Air Force previously identified it as an AN196 model used by Kiev’s military.

Stubb emphasized that while “there is no military threat to Finland… the authorities maintain readiness to react to future incidents.”

There have been no reports of casualties on the ground as a result of the incident.

According to the Nordic country’s Defense Ministry, “several small, slow-flying, low-flying objects were observed in Finnish airspace over the sea and in southeastern Finland on Sunday morning.”

F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets were deployed to monitor the drones, but did not use suppressive fire so as to avoid collateral damage, according to Yle News.

Yemen’s Houthi armed forces announced their formal entry into the conflict in the Middle East, firing several missiles at Israel.

The group, which controls the Yemeni capital Sanaa and much of the country’s north, has stayed out of the action since the US and Israel first attacked Tehran on February 28.

But on Saturday, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree issued a statement, declaring support for Tehran and other “resistance” factions in the region.

The group is compelled to begin military operations against the US, Israel and their allies due to ongoing escalation, attacks on infrastructure, and “atrocities” committed in Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and the Gaza Strip, he said.

”Our fingers are on the trigger” if any nation decides to join the strikes by Washington and West Jerusalem or if the Red Sea is used for targeting Iran, Saree warned.

A teacher who suffered burns to his face and hands while saving a student set on fire at a Saskatoon high school has been awarded North America’s highest honour for civilian heroism.

Sean Hayes, a 33-year-old teacher at Evan Hardy Collegiate, was among 18 recipients to receive the U.S. Carnegie Medal for Heroism for his exceptional acts of bravery in 2024.

“All the men and women recognized today risked serious injury or death, or were killed, saving or attempting to save others in acts of extraordinary heroism,” the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced on March 24.

The incident centres on a 15-year-old girl who was set on fire by a classmate in the high school hallway on Sept. 5, 2024. The 14-year-old attacker splashed the victim with lighter fluid before igniting it, burning the victim’s hair, face, and torso.

The commission shared an account of what happened, adding it was reviewed by Hayes.

The account detailed that Hayes was in the hallway when the attack occurred. “He immediately instructed a co-worker to call 911 and instructed the girl to move to the ground,” the commission wrote, noting that the teacher then got on his hands and knees and tried to roll the victim back and forth to extinguish the flames, but was impeded by her backpack.

Hayes proceeded to pat out the flames using his hands, but realized his own clothes had caught fire. He stood up, pressed himself against some lockers, and removed his overshirt and T-shirt, the commission said.

The Saskatoon teacher then used his overshirt to stamp out the fire on the girl’s body, and when it was damaged by the flames, he used a co-worker’s shirt to continue putting out the fire. Continue…

Psychiatrists are welcoming a reform of Quebec's mental health law that would lower the threshold for involuntary hospitalization, while lawyers and advocates for patients warn the changes could infringe on rights without addressing a lack of mental health resources across the province.

Health Minister Sonia Bélanger tabled Bill 23 — the overhaul of Quebec's mental health law, known as P-38 — on Tuesday. Premier François Legault had promised to make the changes following the death of Quebec police officer Maureen Breau, who was killed by a man experiencing a mental health crisis in 2023. The man had been allowed to live outside of an institution despite being considered "a significant risk to public safety." The bill also comes two weeks after Plateau-Mont-Royal dépanneur owner Chong Woo Kim was stabbed to death by a man who had a violent criminal past, and who police had attempted and failed to preventatively detain in hospital in August.

In addition to lowering the threshold for involuntary hospitalization from a "serious and immediate" danger to situations where there is a risk of danger — allowing earlier interventions — the overhaul would also allow some procedures, like psychiatric evaluations, to happen without consent. Some decisions related to involuntary hospitalization would also be handled by an administrative tribunal instead of the courts.

Bélanger said the change is aimed "primarily at better supporting individuals whose mental state could pose a risk to their own safety or that of others." Continue…

Public servants can now apply for early retirement incentives

Now that the federal budget bill has received royal assent, the Treasury Board has started implementing early retirement incentives it is offering to public servants.

The Treasury Board is set to open a portal on its website where public servants who qualify for the incentive can apply by July 24. The incentives were announced in Budget 2025 as part of the federal government’s attempts to trim the size of the public service.

The government is planning to cut the public service by around 30,000 jobs over several years and has said it wants to do so mostly through voluntary departures.

If an eligible public servant is granted the incentive, they will be able to retire early without any penalties on their pensions.

Last December, about 68,000 public servants received letters notifying them that they were eligible for the incentives. There are two eligible groups of employees.

The first group includes those who joined the public service on or before Dec. 31, 2012, are at least 50 years old and have at least two years of pensionable service and 10 years of employment within the public service.

The second group includes those who joined the public service on or after Jan. 1, 2013, are at least 55 years old and have at least two years of pensionable service and 10 years of employment within the public service.

At a parliamentary committee on March 26, the day the budget bill received royal assent, Treasury Board Secretary Bill Matthews told parliamentarians that the program did not mean “anyone who wants to go gets to go.” Continue…

Just hours after an American Airlines flight was diverted to Detroit with a disruptive passenger prompting an FBI response, a second U.S. commercial flight declared a potential hijacking incident upon landing in Atlanta on Sunday evening.

Frontier Airlines Flight 2539 (flight number F92539), an Airbus A320 flying from Columbus, Ohio (CMH) to Atlanta (ATL), landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport around 5:09 p.m.

Shortly after touchdown, the crew declared a potential hijacking and security concern.

The aircraft was immediately directed to isolation away from normal airport traffic and followed by emergency vehicles to an inactive runway.

Video and tracking data show the plane remained isolated on the remote runway for nearly two hours as law enforcement and airport personnel responded.

According to crew audio from the incident, a black male passenger seated in 3A allegedly threatened to kill the passenger next to him and claimed there was a bomb onboard.

The crew treated the situation as a potential hijacking threat.

Passengers were eventually deplaned and bused to the terminal.

Authorities then searched the aircraft and all checked and carry-on bags.

We’ve all heard about the Armor of the Lord, or the Armor of God, but most of us read those verses and don’t come away with any practical, modern-day application. How did these verses apply to our lives today? This is something we all need to know.

Preamble to the Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-13 (KJV) Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

1 This is the last chapter of the book of Ephesians, the book of love, and when God says “finally” it puts an emphasis on its importance.

2 There is power in the Lord, and this power makes us strong, via His armor.

3 If you are missing a key piece of defense, that is where your enemy will concentrate the attack. We need ALL of the armor, not just some of it.

4 Stand, not attack, not advance, not defend, not fight, but stand. The word “stand”(including withstand) occurs 4 times in verses 11 – 14.

5 We stand against the devil, not people. We don’t fight, but we wrestle not against people but against spiritual wickedness; this is why we need spiritual armor. We are soldiers, but we wrestle, not fight. I wrestled from Junior High and varsity to a top Pennsylvania College in my freshman year. Wrestling is a difficult sport that takes training, strength, stamina, balance, and a lot of practice to learn moves.

6 To be able to stand against the devil and all of his schemes, cunning, deceit, and trickery, we need God’s armor.

7 To be able to stand against the devil’s influences of people in high places (hierarchies) doing the devil’s wishes, we need God’s armor.

The Armor of God

There are 6 armaments discussed in Ephesians 6. Five are defensive and only one is an offensive, but to be used in response to an attack. Remember, we are to stand, not attack, not advance, but to stand, and we stand where we are, not where other people are. We don’t compare ourselves to others. Everyone’s battle is different.

“We’ll be there as long as they need us, until they get back to normal operations and feel like those airports are secure,” Homan said in a CBS interview.

He confirmed an earlier statement by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that TSA agents would be paid, possibly as soon as March 30.

“It’s good news because these TSA officers are struggling; they can’t feed their families or pay their rent,” Homan told CNN. “We’re talking about the Department of Homeland Security in a time we have a heightened threat posture in this country because of what is going on in the world. Because US Congress is perfectly functional, and all domestic issues have been resolved (one would very ironically think), the FT reports that a bipartisan pair of US senators are set to introduce legislation calling for sanctions to be imposed on senior Hungarian officials involved in obstructing aid to Ukraine.

If passed, the Block Putin act would require President Trump to impose financial sanctions and visa bans on Hungarian government officials involved in the country’s purchases of Russian oil and gas, and who have sought to block support for Ukraine.

The introduction of the bill comes as Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has held up a €90bn EU loan to Ukraine as he faces a tough re-election campaign ahead of parliamentary elections next month. Moscow expels UK diplomat for spying

A British diplomat in Moscow has been stripped of his accreditation and ordered to leave the country after conducting “intelligence and subversive activities” under the cover of his embassy post, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced.

The officer, identified as Albertus Gerardus Janse van Rensburg, served as second secretary at the UK Embassy in Moscow. According to an FSB statement released on Monday, the diplomat deliberately provided false information when applying for entry permission, thereby violating Russian law.

The FSB also said it had “recorded attempts to obtain sensitive information during informal meetings with Russian experts in the field of economics.” The agency concluded that van Rensburg was engaged in activities “threatening the security of the Russian Federation.”

The local organizers of Shen Yun Performing Arts say they are heartbroken that their March 29 performance in Toronto was cancelled due to a bogus bomb threat, which they say follows a trend of the Chinese regime targeting the show to deter people from seeing it.

Shen Yun, which showcases China’s traditional culture before it was suppressed by decades of communist rule, was founded in 2006 by leading classical Chinese artists in New York, where they enjoy artistic freedom, away from repression by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

However, the organizers say the show has been a target of transnational subversion by the CCP for years. Most recently, the show’s local organizers said Prime Minister Mark Carney was among six world leaders who received threats warning that they could face harm, including from bombs, if Shen Yun was allowed to perform in their countries.

Shen Yun, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, began the Canadian leg of its global tour in March with performances in Hamilton, Mississauga, and Kitchener, and had its opening two shows at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on March 28. ALERT Lethbridge’s organized crime team and the Lethbridge Police Service conducted the seizure on March 19, following a search of a home in the Victoria Park neighbourhood near Chinook Regional Hospital and a local middle school.

Staff Sergeant Trevor Sheppard said fentanyl remains a top priority for ALERT.

“A record seizure like this showcases our commitment to public safety and we will continue to aggressively target offenders who poison our community,” Sheppard said.

Teenage recipients of COVID-19 vaccines faced an elevated risk of serious adverse events, including appendicitis, after a second dose, researchers said in a new study.

Norwegian scientists studied about 496,432 adolescents aged 12 to 19 for the research, published in Scientific Reports on March 27, utilizing nationwide safety data. Many of the adolescents received a messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

Following a first dose, there were no significant increases in adverse events, the scientists said. An age-adjusted analysis identified an increased incidence of appendicitis and allergic reactions, but the small number of events means those increases should be “interpreted cautiously,” they wrote.

In contrast, after the second dose, there was a higher incidence of allergic reactions, swollen lymph nodes, and heart inflammation. When isolating people without reported COVID-19 infections, an elevated risk of epilepsy and convulsions also appeared.

Stratifications by age showed that the heart inflammation cases were primarily among 18- to 19-year-olds, who have been known to face an increased risk of the inflammation—for which doctors often advise refraining from physical activity for a period of time—following COVID-19 vaccination. An Angus Reid survey released on March 29 found that 75 percent of more than 4,000 respondents favour a ban like the one in Australia, where children younger than 16 are prevented from setting up accounts on platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and Threads.

“Canada should be considering options to limit social media use by minors,” Moe said in a March 30 X post. “In the coming weeks, our government will be asking Saskatchewan people for their views on this matter.”

The survey, conducted online between March 11 and 17, found that 18 percent of respondents opposed a social media ban for minors and 7 percent were uncertain.

The gap in support between banning certain apps—87 percent—and the 75 percent support for a full ban on social media for those younger than 16 suggests there is some hesitation to fully restrict children from using all types of social media, however.

Respondents who want the prohibition of specific applications were asked which apps they would restrict for users 15 and younger. Of those, 88 percent said they would ban TikTok, followed by 86 percent for X, 84 percent for Snapchat, and 77 percent for Instagram. “Please depart the United States immediately.”

The program — designed to compensate anyone who experienced a rare but serious injury after receiving any Health Canada approved vaccine, including COVID vaccines — has seen a growing volume of “negative correspondence” from claimants, families and members of Parliament in its five years of operation, officials with the Public Health Agency of Canada said at a technical briefing for media Tuesday.

After the Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) was announced in December 2020 by then prime minister Justin Trudeau, the program’s management was turned over to a private consulting firm, Oxaro Inc.

A Global News investigation revealed that, as of last summer, of $50.6 million in taxpayer funding, $33.7 million had been spent on administrative costs, and just $16.9 million given to injured claimants. Neither the government, nor Oxaro, appreciated the number of injury claims VISP would receive, Global reported. Many people complained of being given the runaround or having their applications rejected “by doctors they’ve never spoken to or met.”

About 225 claims that were denied by Oxaro for not meeting their stricter eligibility criteria are now under review, government officials said.

Senate Bill S.4113—the “AI Guardrails Act of 2026,” introduced March 17, 2026 by U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI)—is being presented as a framework to limit how the Department of Defense uses AI.

But the actual text includes a built-in waiver mechanism that enables those same systems to be approved and used under national security justifications.

This means a Pentagon-approved AI system could independently identify and engage targets, making life-and-death decisions without real-time human input.

There is no language in that waiver clause limiting where the system can be used, whether targets are foreign or domestic.

The bill has been read twice in the Senate and referred to the Senate Armed Services Committee, where it now awaits further consideration.

The federal government may need to consider increasing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and slowing the growth of non-defence spending to finance a significant rise in Canada’s military budget, according to a new report from the C.D. Howe Institute.

The report, authored by Colin Busby and Nicholas Dahir, states that “some combination of tax increases, spending cuts, or taking on more debt is required” to meet future defence commitments.

The analysis indicates that Canada’s plan to raise defence spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035 will require what it describes as “hard fiscal choices,” including possible GST increases and tighter limits on non-defence programs.

Released Thursday, the report projects annual defence spending will rise from just over $60 billion in 2025–26 to nearly $150 billion by 2034–35. At that level, defence spending would be comparable to the major transfers the federal government provides to provinces each year.

The analysis suggests that a two-point increase in the GST could generate approximately $25 billion in additional federal revenue in 2025–26.
