Canada’s federal government renewed approvals for a hard drug injection site despite the provincial government pulling support for such sites and against the express advice of experts.

In March of this year, a so-called “safe” hard drug injection site in Ottawa’s Sandy Hill neighbourhood was told its exemption was being renewed again for one year.

The news came just a few days before the Ontario provincial government under Premier Doug Ford announced it would finally end support for all remaining “hard drug” consumption sites, admitting that allowing the legal drug dens was a “failed experiment.” This included the Sandy Hill site.

Canada’s Federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel was grilled by Conservative MPs about why Health Canada was renewing the federal drug law exemption for such sites. Ottawa’s chief of police, Eric Stubb, along with local community associations, had warned the feds about the injection sites.

The problems at the Sandy Hill site led to a nearby childcare facility closing due to serious safety concerns.

A Chinese national has been accused of illegally photographing U.S. military aircraft in Nebraska during a road trip that authorities say started in Vancouver.

Twenty-one-year-old college student Tianrui Liang was arrested at a New York airport on April 7 while trying to leave the United States for Glasgow, Scotland, where he is studying, the FBI said in a recently published court filing.

Liang went on a multistate road trip after flying into Vancouver, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release. He crossed the border into Washington state on March 28 on a valid B1/B2 visa.

Liang’s road trip included a stop near Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota before travelling on to Nebraska, where he stopped at Offutt Air Force Base located near Omaha, the FBI said in the court document.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations was alerted on March 31 after a witness reported seeing “a male holding a camera with a telescopic lens” at a public road bordering the base’s fenced perimeter, according to the court documents.

The male was identified by investigators arriving at the scene as Liang. The accused told police he got out of his car to take pictures and admitted to photographing a Boeing RC-135, a four-engine reconnaissance aircraft, flying near Offutt, which serves as headquarters for the U.S. Strategic Command. Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon was among the ministers that parents and children rallying for federal government action to better protect kids online were set to meet Monday, after concerns were expressed that the minister did not have the time.

The group of around 20 children and parents came to Parliament Hill as part of an initiative led by Children First Canada, a national charity calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to present new legislation aimed at online safety.

Sara Austin, founder and CEO of the charity, called online safety one of the “leading challenges” children in the country face, saying they came to Parliament Hill to declare that “time is up,” adding that compared to jurisdictions like Australia and the United Kingdom, which have online safety laws in place, “Canada has nothing on the books.”

After meeting Monday with staff in Carney’s office where they brought “children, youth and parents” to share that message, Austin says they were set to meet with Canadian Heritage Minister Marc Miller, who is tasked with shepherding through a new online harms bill. They were also set to meet Opposition Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and appeared in the House of Commons as recognized guests.

Two of Alberta’s biggest unions advertised in favour of a petition to keep the province in Canada, with the labour groups spending more than 40 times those of the organizations who backed Alberta’s pro-separatist effort, according to a provincial public registry.

As of April 9, the United Nurses of Alberta had spent $34,391.07 to advertise in support of the Forever Canadian petition, while the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) spent $10,000, according to Elections Alberta’s public registry. By comparison, the only two organizations who registered to advertise in favour of Alberta’s separatist petition spent a combined $2,349.

According to provincial law, organizations planning to spend more than $1,000 advertising on behalf of a citizen-led petition must register with Elections Alberta as a third-party advertiser. Fourez actively paid for custom videos showing real monkeys being burned alive, having their genitals mutilated, limbs broken, and subjected to unimaginable atrocities, all for the sick pleasure of like-minded degenerates in private payment groups.

Fourez was a key player in an online network of monsters pooling money to commission these bespoke torture flicks, archiving them, controlling their distribution, and sharing them via encrypted apps.

She admitted to sending at least 11 payments and distributing the videos on at least 10 occasions. She now faces up to five years for the conspiracy charge, seven years for distribution, and fines up to $500,000.

“Fourez admitted to her role in making these horrific videos and posting them online,” said ICE Director Todd M. Lyons. “What kind of sick person would pay someone make a video of sexualized animal torture? ICE will continue investigating these sadistic online groups and do everything in our power to stop them.”

Just weeks earlier, Joseph Garrett Buckland of Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to the same conspiracy. These cases are part of a broader ring that law enforcement has been unraveling.

“A policy rate close to current settings looks appropriate to support adjustment in the economy and return inflation to target,” BOC Governor Tif Macklem said adding that “There may still be a need to adjust the policy rate depending on how the risks evolve. But if the economy evolves broadly in line with the base case, changes in the policy rate can expected to be small."

At the same time, officials flagged major risks to their outlook, including a review of the North American trade deal, the conflict in the Middle East and ongoing damage from the impacts of US tariffs, which could all require different responses for monetary policy.

Macklem explicitly outlined how officials may have to adjust borrowing costs more significantly in some scenarios. He noted that while additional US trade restrictions could prompt cuts to the policy rate, rising and persistently elevated energy prices would lead to tightening.

“If oil prices continue to increase, and particularly if they remain elevated, the risk that higher energy prices become generalized inflation increases,” Macklem said. “If this starts to happen, monetary policy will have more work to do — there may be a need for consecutive increases in the policy rate.”

The Information reports that the agreement positions Google alongside OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI as tech giants supplying AI models for classified Pentagon use, The Information reported citing a person familiar with the matter. Under the terms of the deal, the Pentagon is authorized to use Google’s AI technology for “any lawful government purpose.”

Classified networks handle a wide range of sensitive government work, including mission planning and weapons targeting. The Pentagon signed agreements worth up to $200 million each with major AI labs in 2025, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Canada already generates roughly 13% of its electricity from nuclear power, with 17 reactors operating in Ontario and New Brunswick. The sector contributes about $22 billion each year to the national economy.

Uranium remains a major export driver, with Canada producing about 24% of global supply in 2024. Nearly 90% of that output is shipped abroad, primarily from Saskatchewan, where the industry supports more than 3,400 jobs.

The government says expanding nuclear capacity will help electrify the economy, create jobs, and stabilize energy costs. Critics, however, have long raised concerns about ballooning project costs, timelines, and the risks of relying on large-scale federal spending to drive industrial policy.

Hodgson insisted the country must move quickly to stay competitive, arguing Canada risks falling behind without aggressive investment in nuclear development.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has tabled the 2026 spring economic update. The fiscal update showed a smaller than projected budget deficit of $66.9 billion for the fiscal year. However, revenue projections have increased compared to the 2025 budget presented last fall, meaning the government has decided to spend more money. New measures outlined in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s mini-budget are projected to reach $37.5 billion in net new spending over the next six years.

“Today, we’re restoring fiscal discipline,” Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne told reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday. “These are serious times, and Canadians expect prudent fiscal management.”

Canada’s aerospace industry could be in for windfall with news that NATO has selected a new fleet of airborne warning planes based on Canadian aircraft outfitted with Swedish technology.

The French defence publication La Lettre and the German press agency DPA are reporting NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency selected Sweden’s Saab and Canada’s Bombardier to replace the alliance’s current fleet of U.S.-built airborne warning and control aircraft.

The selected GlobalEye aircraft is based on the Bombardier Global 6000 or 6500 airframe and comes outfitted with Saab’s extended range radars and other systems.

A NATO purchase of GlobalEye could help spark further export sales of the plane. The United Arab Emirates is currently flying the aircraft. Sweden and France have also placed orders. Continue…
